Facebook Exec. on Losing Husband

Commencement speeches usually strike a celebratory tone, but Facebook Chief Operating Executive Sheryl Sandberg went against the grain Saturday while addressing UC Berkeley grads and spoke publicly for the first time about the tragic death of her husband.

"His death was sudden and unexpected," Sandberg said. "For many months afterward, and at many times since, I was swallowed up in the deep fog of grief — what I think of as the void — an emptiness that fills your heart, your lungs, and constricts your ability to think or even to breathe."

Sandberg’s husband, Survey Monkey CEO Dave Goldberg, died of a cardiac arrhythmia while the couple was vacationing in Mexico in May of 2015.

During the speech, the “Lean In” author told students about how the sudden loss affected her, and how she came out of that grief with a stronger sense of self.

"I learned about the depths of sadness and the brutality of loss," she said. "But I also learned that when life sucks you under, you can kick against the bottom, break the surface, and breathe again."

She said she hopes students will take her words to heart and acknowledged that they too will face immense challenges.

"When the challenges come, I hope you remember that anchored deep within you is the ability to learn and grow. You are not born with a fixed amount of resilience. Like a muscle, you can build it up, draw on it when you need it."

She continued: "It is the hard days — the times that challenge you to your very core — that will determine who you are," she said. "You will be defined not just by what you achieve, but by how you survive.”

The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) has released the names of four officers involved in the fatal shooting of a suspect who drove a stolen car into the path of the officers Wednesday evening, police said.

The officers are Ryan Cameron, Shawn Boggeman, David Serrano and Trevor Sterling.

30-year-old Thongsoune Vilaysane attempted to evade police, and led them on a pursuit through Encanto around 9:30 p.m.

Officers gave several commands to Vilaysane to shut off the car and exit the vehicle. He ignored police commands and reversed the car towards two of the officers, police confirmed.

Officers fired multiple rounds at Vilaysane. He was struck several times. Vilaysane died at the scene on Benson Avenue and Pagel Place just north of Skyline Drive.

The events leading up to the shooting were captured on body cameras worn by the officers, investigators confirmed Thursday.

Boggeman has been with the department for two years, and the other three have been with SDPD between four and five years.

Mom Wants Officials to Examine Missing Teens' Boat

The mother of one of the missing Florida teens wants law enforcement to conduct “a proper forensic examination” of their boat when it returns to shore on Monday, NBC News reported.

Pamela Cohen requested that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission or both conduct the review, her attorney said in a letter to the two agencies.

The boat that her son Perry and his friend Austin Stephanos sailed off the coast of Jupiter on July 24 was found capsized on March 18. The vessel is being brought back in a shipping container to Port Everglades in Florida.

An iPhone found on the boat that was turned over to Apple was not salvageable because it was under water for eight months.

One of the teens’ family members suggested the two boys may have been abducted. An investigative file revealed that the FBI was involved, but that the probe was never considered criminal. The teens are officially classified as missing.

Ride to Recognize the "Forgotten Hero of the Forgotten War"

The American Legion post in Chula Vista was the starting line for a ride to recognize a Korean War veteran for his heroism Saturday.

More than 63 years have gone by for retired U.S. Navy Cpt. E. Royce Williams, but Saturday San Diego veterans showed it's never too late to recognize a military hero.

Saturday the 91-year-old Williams was a passenger on the ride through San Diego County, but on November 18, 1952, he was the pilot in an F9F-5 Panther.

When he took on seven superior MiG-15s in a fierce dogfight lasting roughly 35 minutes Williams single-handedly shot down four Russian fighters.

“It was sort of like God giving David a task of Goliath – only I had seven Goliaths,” Williams told NBC 7.

Williams’ dogfight was a record-breaking feat that many claim should have earned Williams the Navy Cross or Medal of Honor – if only he didn't have to keep the mission top secret for more than 50 years.

Last year Rear Admiral Doniphan B. Shelton (Ret.) initiated a request to have Williams’ achievement re-reviewed through Congressman Duncan Hunter's office along with the endorsements of two four star-admirals, Hays and Hayward.

“There’s nothing wrong with the Silver Star that they gave him, believe me, that’s a wonderful award, but it’s not what he earned,” Shelton explained.

Shelton said if the proper record was known from the beginning Williams would have received the Navy Cross or Medal of Honor.

The mayors of Chula Vista, Escondido and San Diego each proclaimed a day in 2016 as "Royce Williams Day."

"I can't thank the people enough," Williams said at the end of the ride. "It was all over I thought. Suddenly I'm authorized to say something and look what it's blossomed into. It's amazing."

A recently published online petition is calling for congress and the president to recognize Williams with the highest military honor.

"We need 100,000 signatures in less than 27 days," CJ Machado with Homeland Magazine said. "Will you help us honor our veterans while they're still here with us today? 91 years old Captain Williams. An amazing man. We can make the difference, we can let him know how much we appreciate him just by signing."

The father and son accused of luring a woman and her four teenage daughters to a Utah house, kidnapping them and assaulting the mother, are in custody in Wyoming after a day-long manhunt, NBC News reported.

Dereck "DJ" Harrison, 22, was arrested at about 10 p.m. Saturday night after the manhunt in the Half Moon Lake area, northeast of the town of Pinedale, Wyoming. His father, Flint Wayne Harrison, 51, surrendered to authorities in earlier Saturday.

The Harrisons allegedly invited the mother and her daughters, aged between 13 and 18, to a home in Utah Tuesday, and tied them up with wire and duct tape, according to Centerville police said.

The mother and daughters were assaulted with a baseball bat as they attempted to break free, Centerville police said. By the time they did escape, the suspects had already fled.

Sources Challenge Navy's Account of SEAL Trainee's Death

A week after a Navy SEAL trainee died following a swimming drill in California, accounts are emerging that challenge the Navy's narrative of what happened, alleging the death may have been the result of an instructor going too far.

Seaman James Derek Lovelace, 21, drowned during a training exercise on May 6 called "drown proofing," according to the Navy.

But sources who've spoken to NBC News and The Virginian-Pilot say the drill wasn't "drown proofing," but instead a rather more intense exercise known as "combat treading," which involved physical harassment of trainees by instructors in the water intended to test their ability to stay afloat under stress.

The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Lovelace was held underwater until he passed out by an instructor who then blamed the drowning on the trainee's "inability to perform."

A Navy spokesman, said in a statement Friday that Naval Special Warfare Command is "fully cooperating" with the NCIS investigation and a separate Navy safety investigation into the training death. The instructor has been removed from training as officials investigate Lovelace's death, a spokesman told NBC News.

Authorities released a series of photos Friday of a man accused of exposing himself to an 8-year-old girl near in Oceanside.

The alleged flashing incident happened around 4 p.m. Tuesday, as an 8-year-old girl was in the parking lot of her apartment complex in the 100 block of Avenida Descanso, according to the Oceanside Police Department (OPD).

The girl told police the stranger asked her if she had seen a dog. The girl told him she had not, and the man then allegedly flashed his genitals to the girl.

The victim ran away to her family’s apartment nearby and reported the incident to her mother. She was not harmed, officials said. The girl’s mom then called police.

When officers arrived, the suspect was nowhere to be found. Police said he was last seen getting into a black pickup truck and driving away from the complex.

In an effort to expose the suspect and net an arrest, the police department released grainy photos of the suspect captured on surveillance video.

According to investigators, the suspected flasher is described as a tall, skinny man in his mid-30s with short, brown hair. He wore eyeglasses and had a beard.

A surveillance camera also caught images of the suspect’s truck, described by investigators as a black Toyota Tacoma, possible a mid-1990s to early 2000s model. The truck had a gray interior and a "distinctive" sunroof.

At this point, police say this appears to be an isolated incident involving one victim. No further details were released.

Police said that anyone who recognizes the suspect or the truck can call OPD Det. Steve Stracke at (760) 435-4703 or the OPD (760) 435-4911. If you spot the suspect or truck, take down the license plate and call authorities from a safe distance, the OPD said.

Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump said the U.K. leaving the European Union would not impact trade between the U.S. and Britain if he were to become president, NBC News reported.

In an interview with Pierce Morgan for ITV's "Good Morning Britain," Trump said although he had "big investments" in the U.K., he had "no preference" on the June 23 Brexit vote.

Asked by Morgan if the U.K. would go "to the back of the queue" if Britain chose to leave — a reference to Barack Obama's assertion the U.S. would prefer to trade with large blocs like the EU — Trump said "certainly not."

"With me, [Britain will] always be treated fantastically well," he added.

Some of the most elite cyclists pedaled through San Diego County on Sunday as part of the Amgen Tour of California.

The tour started at 11:30 a.m. at Mission Bay’s Ski Beach and wrapped up around 3:40 p.m.

Between the start and finish, the riders pedaled themselves 108 miles through several parts of San Diego County. They first headed south to the first of two sprint locations in Imperial Beach before heading east towards the lone major climb of the opening stage, a trek up Honey Springs Road to see who is King of the Mountain.

Other notable spots on the path included Balboa Park, the Coronado Bridge and the Gaslamp District.

In its entirety, the race runs nearly 800 miles across California’s most scenic spots. It will wind down next Sunday in Sacramento.

No major highways or interstates in San Diego County were impacted by the race, as it zipped through surface streets.

The race took place in Escondido and Rancho Bernardo in 2009 and again in Escondido three years ago.

A former U.S. Marine from Carlsbad is the world planking champion no more.

A Chinese SWAT officer surpassed George Hood’s international record set last May. At that time, the former Marine officer and retired Drug Enforcement Administration agent made the Guinness World Record at 5 hours, 15 minutes and 15 seconds.

The new record of 8 hours, 1 minute and 1 second was set by Mao Weidong during the Extreme Fitness Competition in Beijing on Saturday.

Weidong competed against 7 other men, including Hood, and prevailed in staying in the abdominal plank position the longest.

Coincidentally, Hood actually beat his old record by an hour and 45 minutes, but it wasn’t enough to beat Weidong.

Hood holds seven world records and has set the six Guinness World Records.

One person was confirmed to be dead after a plane went down near Mount Wilson in the Angeles National Forest on Sunday, officials said.

A Cessna 182 single-engine light plane with white and blue stripes was spotted near Angeles Crest Highway and Mt. Wilson Red Box Road about 9:10 a.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The wreckage was near Mount Wilson Road at the Angeles Crest Highway, state Route 2, in steep mountain wilderness.

The plane was traveling from Montgomery Field Airport in San Diego to Santa Monica Municipal Airport when it lost contact 17 miles east of Van Nuys, according to a Federal Aviation Authority spokesman.

Search and rescue teams were searching for the aircraft but had low visibility due to fog, fire officials said.

Hours later at 4:30 p.m., the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said preliminary information indicated that they found the aircraft in the Brown Mountain area above Altadena.

Deputies confirmed that one person was dead in the crash.

The San Diego-based plane is owned by Tom Reid, who leases it to experienced pilots.

The FAA reported that the pilot had indicated a flight from San Diego to Santa Monica, west of Los Angeles.

The crash site was not on a direct route, as Mount Wilson is about 90 miles northwest of San Diego and 35 miles northeast of Santa Monica.

American law enforcement officials believe roughly 250 Americans have tried to join ISIS, NBC News reported.

Assistant Attorney General John Carlin from the Justice Department told NBC News that his agency has investigations open in all 50 states.

While many of these Americans never leave the United States, a few dozen recruits have made the trip to join ISIS in Syria and Iraq.

Documents obtained by NBC News from a man claiming to be an ISIS defector identified at least 15 American citizens or residents who joined the terror group overseas — and they fit no particular pattern. Some are from poor Muslim immigrant families, while others come from what can be described as privileged backgrounds.

NBC News has a full list of names and background on the 15 Americans identified.

Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus defended Donald Trump on morning shows Sunday, saying campaign traditions don’t apply to the presumptive nominee because Trump is an "outsider," NBC News reported.

When asked on ABC Sunday about Trump’s refusal to release his tax returns, Priebus said that would be up to the American people to decide.

Fox News host Chris Wallace pressed Priebus about Trump’s truthfulness about whether he posed as his own publicist in 1991 and about a New York Times report published Saturday on how Trump treats women.

"I've got to tell you, I think that all these stories that come out — and they come out every couple weeks — people just don't care," Priebus said, adding that voters aren’t judging Trump based on his personal life or his past.

Local Airbnb Guests Stay at Farm Animal Rescue

Want to stay in a bed and breakfast where you can play with horses, goats, pigs and chickens?

John Fiske, who founded the San Diego Farm Animal Rescue, also happens to be an Airbnb host. He is now offering his “cozy studio” in the Elfin Forest to weary travelers and animal lovers.

Fiske held an official grand opening party at his 2.5 acre animal rescue Sunday afternoon.

"I think people are here today because they want to connect. They want to connect to animals or to other people," Fiske told NBC 7. "The idea is that there is a lot of animals in need."

[[379609191,C]]

Fiske started the rescue in 2015 to provide a safe haven for farm animals, but eventually listed the studio on Airbnb to sustain the organization.

"When I first knew him he lived in a condo in Del Mar so this has been new for him," friend and coworker Debra Walters said. "His whole purpose is to rescue animals."

The non-profit has become a full-time job for the environmental lawyer who already works a full-time job.

"It's a big job for him, but he's in it 100%. He's on it because he believes in it," Walters said.

Just to feed one horse for one week costs about $100, so Fiske had to think of another way to fund the rescue.

"The Airbnb basically funds the whole thing right now...They can stay here, wake up and feed a horse a carrot," he explained.

"It's a great facility, it's beautiful. The animals seem really happy here...and the people are having a good time," visitor Ronnie Steinau said.

Fiske has been able to take in more animals and do needed improvements to the property, including clearing the land to make space for more animals, securing a new horse bench and installing pig fencing.

"When he heard this woman was looking for a home for her horse that she couldn't take care of anymore, he was absolutely not ready and yet he went and picked up the horse that weekend," Walters said.

Currently Fiske has four horses, two chickens and one pig and he will soon start taking in goats.

"I probably don't have the space for cows," he said.

Most of the animals are also available for adoption. Information can be found on the website. People can also volunteer or be pet foster parents.

"The funny thing about volunteers is, one of the things we need the most is scooping poop," Fiske laughed. "They can get their hands dirty literally."

 [[379595771,C]]

“Creating compassion through empathetic experiences raises awareness for the ethical treatment of animals who feel and think,” Fiske said. "The goal is just awareness."
