The soccer club Real Madrid will wear black armbands Saturday to mourn 16 members of a team supporters club killed by ISIS gunmen in an attack on a café in Iraq, NBC News reported.

The attack on the café in Balad, a city about 50 miles north of Baghdad, occurred early Friday morning. The gunmen included two suicide bombers who detonated explosive vests after police arrived, Iraqi officials told The Associated Press.

Fourteen people were killed outright, and two more died of their wounds later, Tha'er said. Officials told the AP earlier Friday that 13 were killed, but the football club said 16 supporters were killed.

The terror group ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack hours after the attack, according to the AP. It is not the first time ISIS has targeted soccer fans. In March, a suicide bomber attacked a soccer stadium in Iskandriyah, southern Baghdad, killing at least 26 people and wounding 71.

Brewers Blank Padres 1-0

The Padres came into Friday night’s game in Milwaukee having not surrendered a run in 23 straight innings. But all good things must come to an end.

Milwaukee starting pitcher Junior Guerra shut out the Padres on just two-hits over six innings. A trio of relief pitchers combined for three scoreless innings of one-hit ball to lockdown Guerra’s second win of the season.

In his Padres debut Christian Friedrich pitched well enough to deserve another start. The 28 year old left-hander who was called up from Triple-A El Paso went six innings giving up just one run on a career high 116 pitches. He did have some command trouble surrendering six walks, one of which was intentional.

The only run of the game came in the first. Domingo Santana got things started with a single to left for the Brewers. Jonathan Villar walked before Ryan Braun flied out to deep right moving both runners into scoring position. Jonathan Lucry walked to load the bases for Chris Carter who hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Santana.

Brewers won 1-0; it’s the ninth time this season the Padres have been shut out.

Luis Perdomo will make his first major league start tomorrow for San Diego. Wily Peralta goes for the Brewers.

An amazing story of survival is emerging after a 70-year old woman drove onto a sidewalk and into a group of children after school at Del Mar Heights Elementary School’s pickup area Friday.

Among the nine children injured, police say an 11-month-old child in a stroller was pinned beneath the car, San Diego Police Department (SDPD) confirmed.

Student Jacob Chen said he saw the child beneath the right wheel.

“I cried. My sister cried and many other dozens of kids cried. We've never seen anything like that before," Chen said.

The 11-month old child was airlifted to Rady Children's Hospital as a precaution.

Police say amazingly, the child is okay, only suffering bumps and bruises.

Parents praising what investigators called a quick-thinking witness.

“One of the teachers had peace of mind to quickly jump into the car and reverse car because the kid was pinned. So really, smart, quick thinking by that teacher,” according to Johnny Chen, whose wife witnessed what happened.

News of the crash sent parents scrambling to pick up and check on their kids.

Police say the woman was behind the wheel of the Honda Civic when she reversed, hitting a parked car.

“It was a rear bumper to rear bumper accident. She hit one vehicle and it appears she panicked and moved forward at a high rate of speed,” Lieutenant Scott Bender said.

Police say nine children, ages 11 months to nine-years-old were hurt in the crash. Six of them taken to the area hospitals.

A five-year-old with a broken femur suffered the worst injury, police said.

Del Mar Union Superintendent Holly McClurg says as a result of the wreck, the district will review their dismissal process.

“It’s highly structured and organized. There’s one lane that goes in and picks up children. Children are typically called when their parents or guardians are here,” McClurg said.

The 70-year-old woman is not expected to face any charges. Police believe it appears to be an accident.

Fans were stuck in gridlock on southbound I-15 until they exited onto Friars Road.

Some folks were even in the middle of the street selling Beyonce t-shirts to people waiting to get into the parking lot.

The classic naval aviation movie, “Top Gun” turns 30 this month and San Diego’s Hotel Del Coronado will pay tribute to the flick with a series of events Friday.

The Del plans to celebrate national “Top Gun Day” to the max with events throughout the property that span everything from fitness sessions to live music.

For those who “feel the need for speed,” the hotel kicked off “Top Gun Day” with an early morning beachfront spin class set to remixes from the movie’s soundtrack.

From 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., the hotel will offer “Top Gun” themed treatments at its Spa at The Del, including the “Take My Breath Away Oxygen Facial” and the “Maverick Manicure.”

From 11:30 a.m. to sunset, The Del’s Sun Deck will serve “Top Gun” themed cocktails. From 1 p.m. to sunset, guests can buy TOMS-brand aviators similar to the style of sunglasses popularized in the film and snap a photo behind “Top Gun” cutouts.

At night – from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. – an outdoor screening of “Top Gun” will go down on The Del’s Windsor Lawn. Organizers say the screening is free and will be open seating. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Before the screening, at 7:40 p.m., there will be a question and answer session with current and former U.S. fighter pilots. The discussion will be moderated by Capt. Jim “Guido” DiMatteo, U.S. Navy (Ret).

Finally, fans can toast to Goose and Maverick (Tom Cruise) and relive the memorable music of the movie at the hotel’s B&S Bar where, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., Coronado musician Gonzo Gonzales will play “Top Gun” classic as patrons sip on special themed cocktails.

Organizers say a portion of food and drink sales from The Del’s “Top Gun Day” festivities will be donated to Wings Over America, a foundation that awards college scholarships to dependents of those in the Navy aviation community.

“Top Gun” carries special significance in San Diego, as parts of the

San Diego has strong ties to “Top Gun,” as parts of the movie were filmed in San Diego, including in the restaurant-turned-landmark, Kansas City Barbeque.

The movie’s unforgettable final scene – in which Tom Cruise’s character, Maverick, reunites with Kelly McGillis’ character, Charlie, as “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” plays on the jukebox – was filmed at the BBQ joint on Harbor Drive.

Each year, the eatery celebrates the movie’s anniversary, and this year is no different. Kansas City Barbeque will run “Top Gun” food and drink deals and events through May 19, and will also sell 30th anniversary commemorative merchandise.

Over at Liberty Station in Point Loma, the brand-new luxury movie theater, THE LOT, will also get in on the “Top Gun” action, presenting 6:45 p.m. showings of the movie Friday through May 18. The theater’s location has ties to the movie, as it sits in a building that formerly housed the historic Navy Training Center’s LUCE Auditorium.

Some “Top Gun” scenes were filmed throughout Liberty Station, which was formerly the site of Naval Training Center San Diego from 1923 to 1997. Many of the individual structures at Liberty Station are designated as historic by the City of San Diego, and the site is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Man Killed Walking Into Home Invasion: Report

A San Diego resident shot and killed in the East County died protecting his friends from a home invasion in-progress, according to a published report.

Brent Adam Adler, 33, was shot to death outside a home in the 8500 block of Tommy Drive in the Lake Murray area Wednesday around 2:50 p.m. after what investigators believe was an attempted home invasion involving a group of as many as five suspects.

On Thursday, Adler’s sister, Ashley Adler, told KGTV her brother interrupted the suspects in the middle of the home invasion and was killed for trying to save his friends.

“When he walked in through the door he saw his two friends tied and blindfolded, so of course he was going to try to protect them,” Ashley said, fighting back tears. “I believe that’s why he got the brutal end of it.”

In a GoFundMe page to raise money to cover costs for Adler’s funeral, Ashley adds: “They were trying to take my brother with them when they were leaving and I think he got away and when he was running back to the house they shot and killed him.”

Police said the suspects demanded money from residents at the home. After Adler was fatally shot, one of his friends tried to help him until emergency crews arrived.

When officers got to the house, they discovered Adler dead on the ground in front of the home. Investigators did not have clear descriptions of the suspects, but believe the group fled in a green Ford Expedition SUV.

As of Friday morning, no arrests had been made.

Adler’s sister told KGTV her brother had spent 12 years in prison for an armed robbery he committed as a teenager, when he and his friends robbed a smoke shop.

On the fundraiser page, Ashley calls Adler a “good man and a great brother and uncle.”

Dog Dies in Vista Mobile Home Fire

Imagine losing nearly everything you hold dear to you in one night.

A Vista man watched as the home he had just remodeled for his family was destroyed by a fire that also took the life of his dog.

Homeowner Eric Martinez was asleep when heard an explosion just before 3 a.m.

Fire broke out inside the Mobile Home Terrace on N Santa Fe Avenue in Vista.

He found flames coming from the front left corner of his home and asked his neighbors to call 911.

Vista firefighters fought to keep the flames from spreading to the home next door.

The cause is under investigation.

Martinez said the fire may have started in his front yard where his best friend, Taz, was attached to his chain.

"He was chained up so the flames were around him so I couldn’t do anything about it," Martinez said.

Fire investigators said a second home sustained some damage because the properties are so close in proximity and share a backyard.

One mobile home park resident told NBC 7 she felt frightened since the homes are so close together and can burn down easily.

Pfizer Blocks Use of Its Drugs for Executions

The Pfizer drug company is taking steps to ensure its products do not wind up in cocktails being used to execute prisoners, NBC News reported.

"Pfizer makes its products to enhance and save the lives of the patients we serve," the company said in a statement. "Consistent with these values, Pfizer strongly objects to the use of its products as lethal injections for capital punishment."

The company is “enforcing a distribution restriction" for several products, including potassium chloride and the powerful anesthetic propofol, which caused the death of Michael Jackson.

Under new guidelines, wholesalers and distributors must not resell the products to correctional institutions for lethal injections — and local governments must certify that products purchased are solely for medically prescribed patient care.

The move shuts off the government's last open market source for drugs used in executions.

Flags, Signs Honor Slain Navy SEAL

An overwhelming show of public support embraced the funeral procession of a U.S. Navy SEAL Friday in Coronado, California.

The military town located southwest of downtown San Diego has long been a home to the U.S. Navy and the SEAL program. On Friday, residents lined the streets holding American flags in honor of Navy Chief Special Warfare Operator Charles Keating IV.

Coronado school kids, encouraged to wear red, white and blue Friday, held signs and watched the procession for the island's adopted son.

Keating was killed in combat on May 3 about 14 miles north of Mosul in an attack launched by 125 ISIS fighters, Pentagon officials said. He was part of a small force sent to fend off the attack.

A native of Arizona, Keating made a home with his new wife Brooke and her family in Coronado, near the headquarters for SEAL Team One.

U.S. Navy SEALs from around the country arrived in San Diego to attend the funeral service held at Sacred Heart Church Friday.

After the service, a funeral procession traveled along 6th Avenue to Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma.

Krista Keating-Joseph, told NBC 7 San Diego her son wished to be buried as close as possible to Coronado Amphibious Naval Base. Keating wanted to be near his beloved SEAL Team One, she said, instead of in Arlington National Cemetery.

[[379415881,C]]

Keating lived in Coronado with his wife, Brooke, and her family. The two married before he deployed, the family told NBC 7.

And many of his neighbors stood on sidewalks and in intersections to show their appreciation for his service.

“I think the expressions of other people to this family are really important to realize that their sacrifice wasn’t in vain,” said Coronado resident Jane Stewart.

School students were encouraged to spend their lunch break along the procession route.

"It's part of being part of this particular community," said Jennifer Moore, Principal of Coronado High School.

She said as educators, they have an obligation to allow students to make a connection with the bigger picture of what's happening in the world.

"This is one of those opportunities," she said.

[[379273851,C]]

In a ceremony Thursday Keating was awarded the Silver Star, the Purple Heart and a second combat ribbon.

A grandson of an Arizona financier involved in the 1980s savings and loan scandal, Keating is the third U.S. service member to be killed in combat in Iraq since U.S. forces returned there in 2014.

The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, any donations be made to the Navy SEAL Foundation.

70-Year Old Woman Drives Up Curb, Injures 9 Children

A 70-year old woman drove onto a sidewalk and slammed into 10 people, including nine children, at an elementary school in Del Mar, California, Friday afternoon, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Police say the woman was backing into a parking spot and hit another vehicle. She panicked, put the car into drive and hit the gas. That's when she drove onto a sidewalk and crashed into the children, who were standing on the sidewalk.

The incident happened in the student pick-up area of Del Mar Elementary School, located at 13555 Boquita Dr., around 2:35 p.m. in north San Diego County.

Nine children, including an 11-month old baby and one adult, were injured in the crash. The infant was in a stroller which authorities said was pinned beneath the car.

Several ambulances were requested to treat the injured, including an air ambulance, which transported victims to Rady Children's Hospital.

Several victims who were hit at the curb were taken to area hospitals, at least three with "traumatic" injuries.

A representative for Rady Children's told NBC 7 at least three very young victims from the crash had been admitted into the hospital. One child, who appeared to be between three or four years old, was being cradled by a paramedic, the spokesperson said.

Intial reports said six children were injured in the crash. As of 4 p.m., Swanson said the total number of patients hurt in the crash had increased to nine. The three additional victims included the driver of the car that hopped the curb and a child who was in the backseat of that vehicle. A parent who ran over to help the group of children was also hurt when she sprained her ankle. Swanson said these three additional patients were treated at the scene and were not initially transported to hospitals.

Three of the children are related. A three-year old child has scrapes and scratches and a baby has a swollen face. A five-year old child has a fractured femur.

There were no life threatening injuries. According to SDPD, the most serious injury was to the five-year old child.

Police say alcohol or drugs are not suspected; the investigation is ongoing.

Initial reports from authorities indicated a school bus may have been involved in the collision, but Swanson confirmed this was not the case.

Del Mar Heights Elementary School teaches kindergarten to 6th grade students and is part of the Del Mar Union School District. According to the school's website, dismissal time for students on Friday was 2:30 p.m. — about five minutes before this accident.

Iowa Officers Cleared in Fatal Hotel Shooting

A grand jury on Wednesday declined to indict three Iowa police officers involved in the shooting death of 29-year-old Ali Eisa Abdalla Yahia at a hotel in February, finding that the cops "followed departmental policies regarding use of force," according to a statement from the Urbandale Police Department, NBC News reported.

Officers were dispatched to the Holiday Inn in Urbandale around 4 a.m. on February 16 after reports of drug use, according to NBC affiliate WHO.

Police body camera footage from the incident show officers struggling with Yahia on the ground as they told him to stop resisting and threatened to use a Taser on him. The officers asked Yahia to show them both of his hands, as Yahia kept one hand underneath him.

Further struggling and several gunshots can be heard before the video ends. Police said Yahia shot at the officers, who returned fire and fatally wounded him, according to WHO.

Passenger Overboard Off Tx. Coast

The Coast Guard is searching for a Carnival Liberty cruise ship passenger who went overboard about 195 miles off the coast of Galveston, Texas.

Watchstanders with the 8th Coast Guard District received a call from the ship's master Friday evening reporting they had video of a woman, believed to be 33-year-old Samantha Broberg, falling overboard at about 2 a.m. Friday, just 10 hours after the ship left the port of Galveston on a four-day cruise to Cozumel, Mexico.

Broberg's travel companions had reported her missing earlier Friday, prompting a ship-wide search.

"Our steward came into our room, checked the closets, checked the bathroom, looked under the bed looked out on our balcony. I mean, they did a very thorough search," said passenger Jo Trizila of Dallas. "We knew it wasn’t going to end well when the last few updates the announcer said would you please just keep this family in your thoughts and prayers."

The ship's crew made a confirmation check on all the passengers, but Broberg was not accounted for, the Coast Guard said. An HC-144 Ocean Sentry and crew were sent from the Coast Guard Aviation Training Center in Mobile, Alabama, to search for the passenger in the area the ship was located when the passenger was last seen.

“You’re pretty much on camera 24/7,” said Steve Cosgrove of Dynamic Travel & Cruises in Southlake. “So, they’re able to go back and see exactly when this person may have gone overboard, what hall she walked down, who she was with, they can actually backtrack where was she prior and all of that type of stuff”.

Carnival’s CareTeam is providing support to Broberg’s travel companions and family, the company said in a statement.

Kansas Sen. Blocks Confirmation of Army Secretary

0

It's been eight months since President Barack Obama nominated Eric Fanning to become secretary of the Army — the first openly gay man to be recommended to that branch's highest ranking civilian position, NBC News reported.

But Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts is holding up Fanning's confirmation because the lawmaker wants Obama to promise not to move Guantanamo Bay detainees to the Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, military installation.

"If the White House calls and assures me that terrorists held at Guantanamo will not come to Ft. Leavenworth, I will release the hold - immediately," Roberts said on the Senate floor late last month, adding that he supports Fanning for the post.

The standoff stems from the president's announcement of a long-anticipated pitch to Congress in February to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay. Keeping the prison open, the president said, is "contrary to our values."

Parking, Public Transit for Billy Joel Concert

0
0

Music legend Billy Joel hits Petco Park Saturday for his big concert and the sell-out crowd will make for one busy night in downtown San Diego.

Petco Park concert organizers say ticketholders should arrive downtown early. Parking lots around the ballpark will open at 2 p.m. Parking is limited and is expected to sell out.

Outside of parking lot adjacent to the ballpark are a few other lots offering a combined total of about 2,500 spaces. This includes the 707 Broadway Garage and the Horton Plaza mall garage, as well as the San Diego Convention Center and Hilton Bayfront garages on Harbor Drive. To access the Harbor Drive lots, use the Front Street exit from Interstate 5 south or the Cesar Chavez Parkway exit from I-5 north.

To avoid parking downtown altogether, concert guests can also take public transit to Petco Park, including the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) trolley, which will add service for the special event across all three trolley lines. The last trolley departs about an hour after the concert ends. MTS park and ride locations along trolley lines offer free parking to riders.

Additionally, North County Transit District Coaster trains will also provide service directly into downtown from Oceanside throughout the afternoon. Return northbound Coaster trains will leave from the Santa Fe Depot downtown after the concert at 11:15 p.m. and 12 a.m.

The gates to Petco Park will open at 6 p.m. Guests are advised to be in their seats for The Piano Man’s show no later than 7:30 p.m., organizers said.

Petco Park security measures will be in effect for the high-profile concert, which means all guests will be screened through metal detectors prior to entering the ballpark. Guests will have to remove cell phones, cameras, sunglasses and other large metal objects before passing through the detectors. All bags, including purses, are subject to screening. Bag no larger than 16-inches by 16-inches by 8-inches will be allowed into the venue.

The screening process will take extra time, so concertgoers should plan accordingly.

Per Petco Park’s security regulations, professional cameras, GoPro cameras and “selfie sticks” are prohibited.

Petco Park says guests with field seats to the show should enter the ballpark through the Western Metal Breezeway on Tony Gwynn Drive or through the gate on Park Boulevard. Guests with tickets in all other seating areas should enter Petco Park via the Gaslamp, East Village or Home Plate gates.
