Dangerous storms packing hail and potential tornadoes were threatening large swaths of the U.S. on Monday, NBC News reported.

Plains states already got a taste of the severe weather: hail nearly twice the size of a quarter was spotted in Nebraska Sunday along with what appeared to be tornadoes.

The Great Lakes area could see severe thunderstorms on Monday afternoon and evening, with Chicago and Milwaukee in the threat area, according to The Weather Channel.

Severe thunderstorms are expected to hit the southern Plains, parts of Texas and the lower Mississippi Valley on Tuesday. Storms also were expected to produce potentially life-threatening tornadoes.

Students Pack Meals for the Hungry

What student would not want to sleep in when given the chance?

Close to 200 Monte Vista High School students waived the privilege Monday and donned firetruck red hairnets to pack 40,000 meals for hungry children around the world.

"Events like this are incredible learning opportunities for students,” explained Randy Montesanto, Principal of Monte Vista High School. “It opens their eyes to issues affecting other students in the world and shows them their small actions have a large impact. We all have a responsibility to work together to build a future for those less fortunate.”

The volunteer students and staff spent the morning packing rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and packets of vitamins, which will be sent to those in need. Each package only costs 29-cents and has a shelf life of two years.

The school also partnered with Stop Hunger Now and the nearby Foothills United Methodist Church to host the fun and impact event.

This event was certainly meaningful to student, Kenneth Stevens.

“I like to help people and I like working with food,” said Stevens. “My career counselor told me I’m going to be a bartender and I said, 'No, if I’m going to package stuff, I’m going to package stuff to help people.'”

Hastert Sued By Accuser

The man at the center of allegations against former House Speaker Dennis Hastert, previously identified only as "Individual A", has filed suit against Hastert, claiming the former speaker reneged on a deal to pay the young man millions of dollars.

Identified in court documents as "James Doe", the man alleges he was sexually abused by Hastert in a motel room when he was 14 years old.

"For many years to follow," the complaint states, "Plaintiff suffered severe panic attacks which lead to periods of unemployment, career changes, bouts of depression, hospitalization, and long-term psychiatric treatment."

The language of the complaint largely mirrors accusations from the federal charges, for which Hastert is scheduled to be sentenced on Wednesday.

"In 2008," the lawsuit states, "Plaintiff was made aware for the first time that Hastert had abused someone else, too. Doe met with Hastert to confront him about what he had done."

At that point, he said, he asked the former congressman to pay him $3.5 million "for the trauma he suffered as a result of the admitted sexual molestation and abuse," an amount which he says Hastert agreed to pay.

As has been previously disclosed, Hastert's payments were interrupted when his banks became suspicious, after he had paid Doe approximately $1.7 million dollars.

Now Doe says he believes he is due the rest of the money, arguing that he and Hastert had a binding agreement.

"Hastert breached the settlement agreement, when he failed to make the agreed payments," he said in his lawsuit, filed Monday in Kendall County. "Plaintiff never filed a personal injury action for the injuries caused by Hastert's illegal conduct, never took any other action to seek redress for those injuries and did not disclose his claims...until he was required to truthfully answer questions from law enforcement."

The lawsuit seeks the $1.8 million dollars still owed from the apparently unwritten agreement, plus interest, and carries a demand for a jury trial.

New Phil's BBQ Location Opens

Award-winning BBQ is now available in Rancho Bernardo.

Phil’s BBQ opened their newest location Monday at 17051 West Bernardo Drive, which is just off Interstate 15.

While this is the fourth free-standing restaurant for the local chain, it is the first location developed with sustainability in mind.

The most obvious example of sustainability at the new location is the large water tower, which is used for water reclamation. By storing and re-purposing the water, the restaurant can save gallons of water and reuse it to flush toilets and hydrate the drought resistant landscaping.

The 7,720-square-foot site practices sustainability in other ways by using LED lighting, 100 percent energy star compliant appliances and dual glazed windows.

Even with all of this change, Phil’s fanatics should not worry.

The restaurant will still have features customers enjoy such as the BBQ focused menu, a full bar and giant televisions.

Beyond this, the opening of the Rancho Bernardo location will bring 75 new jobs to the area and serve a population which did not previously have their own Phil's BBQ branch.

With a full mariachi band playing, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, the Lineal Middleweight World Champion out of Guadalajara walked into his training session.

Canelo is set for a headlining fight in Las Vegas against Amir Khan in just over a week. Monday afternoon the defending champ greeted fans and international press at House of Boxing training center in National City.

Canelo is the favorite coming into this fight, but Khan is known for his footwork and being an elusive fighter. It’s a classic speed vs power matchup. Former boxing champ Oscar de la Hoya is promoting the fight through his company, Golden Boy Promotions and was on hand to offer his perspective. “Boxing has evolved in such a way where you have these fighters who are incredible athletes. Back when I was fighting we were chopping wood,” says De la Hoya. “It’s incredible the evolution has been amazing. It’s really fun to watch with Canelo Alvarez when I watch him train here in San Diego where he calls home now, what he’s doing is just amazing.”

Khan is known as a fighter who surprises his opponents with his speed but Canelo says he isn’t worried saying, “My preparation never changes. I always train at 100% because sometimes the one you think will do the least is the one who does the most. So I’m always training at 100% and I’m ready to get into the ring and give the best of myself no matter who it is.”

As Canelo left the training center he stopped to take pictures and sign a few autographs. But even through his grin you can see his focus. This fight will be challenge on both sides. Not even De La Hoya can call it but says, “Those two guys have to fight the perfect fight and I just don’t know who’s going to win.”

Canelo vs Khan will take place Saturday, May 7 at the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Airport Shuttle Carjacking Suspect Pleads Not Guilty

A man accused of posing as a passenger and stealing an employee shuttle filled with workers at the San Diego International Airport pleaded not guilty to multiple charges Monday.

Norberto Eaton, 46, of Arizona, is facing 18 counts, including eight counts of kidnapping and eight counts of false imprisonment with violence. He’s also facing a vehicle theft charge and a count of reckless driving.

At his arraignment, he pleaded not guilty and denied all allegations, waiving a $500,000 bail review through his attorney. His attorney asked for a medical referral.

Prosecutors say Eaton has a theft-related case out of Las Vegas in his history.

Eaton is accused in the bizarre theft of a shuttle that happened in front of Terminal 2 West at the San Diego International Airport on April 19.

The shuttle – typically used to transport airport employees – was carrying nine passengers at 3:45 p.m. when Eaton hopped on the shuttle and took a seat, allegedly posing as a passenger, San Diego Harbor Police said.

The driver pulled over to the curbside pick-up area and stepped off the bus to give a piece of equipment to another shuttle driver who had pulled up behind him, police said.

That's when investigators say Eaton moved to the driver’s seat and drove toward the highway.

Harbor Police said Eaton left the airport and drove eastbound on busy N. Harbor Drive, speeding and ignoring traffic signals.

Walter Zacofsky III and another male passenger seized the opportunity to grab the suspect when he was forced to stop for traffic at N. Harbor Drive and Hawthorn Street, prompting many to call them heroes.

Eaton went running straight into the arms of a parking enforcement officer, police said.

Zacofsky stood by with the parking enforcement officer until Harbor Police officers arrived.

Harbor Police Sgt. Jonathan George said the incident was captured on surveillance tape inside the shuttle but that video is not being publicly released at this time.

Winds out of the west will increase to 25-35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph according to the National Weather Service.

A wind advisory was issued for areas west of the mountains. Gusts along the coast could reach 35 mph.

The high winds and low relative humidity will create a very high fire danger for residents in Riverside and Imperial Counties.

The NWS has issued a fire weather warning for southwest and south-central Arizona and the lower Colorado River Valley.

Beachgoers should anticipate elevated surf and rip currents, the National Weather Service advises.

Surf was expected to peak Monday and Tuesday with sets up to 7-feet.

SDPD Officer In Need of Kidney Transplant

A veteran San Diego Police officer is in need of a kidney transplant, and now his family and friends are organizing a fundraiser and donor awareness campaign.

Officer Art Calvert, 52, has been with the San Diego Police Department for 23 years. He has served for the past ten years on the department’s Mayor Protection Detail. That means he has essentially been the body guard for Mayor’s Sanders, Filner, Gloria, and Faulconer.

He’s also been witness to some of the city’s most recent, and controversial, events.

“Yes, I’m that fly on the wall, and this fly will never speak. My tongue is tied and sewn shut,” said the personable Calvert.

This is not the first time Calvert has been forced to deal with serious health issues. He’s had two previous kidney transplants, the first from his mother. When her donor kidney eventually failed, Calvert’s sister Charlotte donated her kidney to keep her brother alive. But now, after almost seven years, her kidney has failed.

“We have a very close bond, and to see him suffer, some days he has great days, some days he can’t even get out of bed. That hurts to see that," said Charlotte Calvert.

Art Calvert has been on dialysis for the last two years.

“Nine hours of dialysis a day, plus another hour session in the middle of the day really takes a toll on me. It’s wiping my body out and sometimes it gets my spirits down, so I’m trying to stay positive," he said.

Family and friends have organized a golf fundraiser for May 16.

“This is really overwhelming. I’m kind of embarrassed to even be doing this and going through this. I’m grateful and thankful for everything,” said Calvert.

More information on the fundraiser and Calvert’s story can be found here.

Poway Unified Superintendent Placed on Leave

The Poway Unified School Superintendent has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal audit requested by the Board of Education, the district confirmed Monday.

John Collins is one of the county’s most powerful and well-paid school superintendents.

In December, he hired an attorney to negotiate a possible buyout of his $400,000 contract.

Collins told the Pomerado News, “The current situation is that the board and the superintendent have agreed that their relationship is not working well and we need to discuss our options going forward in the best interests of the district.”

Collins has led the district for five years. According to “Transparent California,” a website that lists public employee salaries and pensions, the superintendent received $478,000 in total pay and benefits in 2014.

Collins’ tenure has also been marked by controversy, including a contentious bond sale and his decision to rewrite and soften a consultant’s report that was critical of the district’s technology department.

Associate Superintendent of Learning Support Services, Dr. Mel Robertson will serve as acting superintendent as of Monday, April 25.

"The Board is committed to continuing the mission of Poway Unified School District of educating our students and focusing on the excellent work of our students and staff," a statement from the district reads.

Padres Kept At Bay By Giants

Drew Pomeranz did not make it out of the 5th inning Monday but the Padres still had a chance to win their series opener in San Francisco.

With the tying run on 3rd base and Travis Jankowski representing the go-ahead run on 2nd, San Francisco’s Josh Osich and Santiago Casilla maneuvered the Giants out of a dicey 8th inning and back into the win column.

Jemile Weeks and Jose Pirela both struck out and with the exception of a Matt Kemp single in the 9th, the Friars never threatened again, losing 5-4 against their division rivals.

Early on it was Madison Bumgarner and the 3 P’s (Pagan, Pence & Posey). That may sound like a bad band name but those 4 Giants were difference-makers.

Angel Pagan, Hunter Pence, and Buster Posey backed their left-handed starting pitcher and helped the Giants jump out in front.

Pagan batted in the 9-hole but collected 3 hits to raise his average to .356.

Pence and Posey each blasted solo homers to the delight of the home crowd.

Pence went yard against Pomeranz while Posey hit his homer off Carlos Villanueva (the 3rd long ball he’s allowed in his last 2 appearances).

Pomeranz was tagged with 3 earned runs and 7 hits in 4.2 innings of work. The lefty has been the team's best starting pitcher so far this year but Monday he did not have his best outing.

Wil Myers extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single in the 3rd. The base knock came shortly after Jon Jay got the Padres on the board by smacking a RBI single up the middle. That plated starting second baseman Jemile Weeks to make it 1-1.

Kemp narrowly missed a 3-run home run in the 3rd inning by about a foot but was robbed by centerfielder Denard Span along the centerfield wall. The clutch defensive play prevented the Padres from taking a 4-1 lead and easily would have changed the entire complexion of the game.

James Shields opposes Johnny Cueto on Tuesday evening. First pitch is at 7:15 p.m.

Snowden Advanced Encryption '7 Years': Spy Chief

Edward Snowden's revelations about the U.S. government's spying activities spurred advanced encryption technologies by "about seven years," National Intelligence Director James Clapper said Monday during a talk hosted by the Christian Science Monitor.

Commercially available software has become so sophisticated so rapidly, Clapper added, that it is a "major inhibitor" to the government's ability to collect intelligence on terrorists.

"From our standpoint," Clapper said, "it's not a good thing."

But in interviews with NBC News, digital rights and security experts were puzzled over how intelligence officials arrived at the seven-year figure.

"He's speculating on what would have happened if what happened didn't happen," said Amie Stepanovich, U.S. policy director of Access Now. "I'm not sure what metric he's using."
