Residents Donate Artifacts for Cedar Fire Monument

East County survivors of the devastating 2003 Cedar Fire came out Saturday to donate their artifacts for a monument being built to honor the victims.

"Things like this its just such a total amazement that I didn't want to throw it away," said survivor Carlynne Allbee, holding melted metal and burned pottery.

For Allbee, the artifacts mark a way to remember all that was lost in the devastating fire.

The Cedar Fire Monument stands next to the Lakeside Fire Administration Office on Lakeside Avenue and pays tribute to those who died in the deadly blaze that destroyed thousands of homes and left more than 100 people injured in San Diego.

The community project will include a garden and art installations inspired by the Cedar Fire.

"When we started this group the idea was when we'd get together and share ideas and resources so that we could build better," said survivor David Kassel.

The monument also aims to be used as a community gathering space and an educational tool on wildfires for residents and students. The main walkway to the monument contains a chronology of fires that have impacted the Lakeside area, as well as information on fire preparedness.

“The Cedar Fire Historical Monument will be a place that will be forever set aside for our community to remember the devastating wildfire that touched all of our lives,” the website for the project explains. “It will be a place for reflection and remembrance of those that tragically lost their lives. It will also be there to provide education and awareness for the next time wildfire threatens our community.”

Lakeside Fire Protection District Fire Chief Andy Parr said the site is about 90 percent completed and will be ready to officially open to the public by late October – the 12th anniversary of the fire.

For now, organizers are in the process of collecting more donations for the project, as well as artifacts from survivors of the fire that artists will incorporate into artworks that will be on display at the site. Organizers are asking survivors to bring their items from the Cedar Fire to the monument on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.

“Some of that artwork might be some items from the fire that might have uniquely melted into artistic shapes or pieces of the rubble of a home that a local artisan may have turned into art or something else very special,” Parr told NBC 7 Tuesday. “We hope something like that comes forward with this call.”

To donate to the Cedar Fire Monument click here or here. Donations can also be dropped off at the Lakeside Fire Administration Office Monday through Thursday between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Checks can also be mailed directly to: San Diego Regional Fire Foundation, ATTN: Cedar Fire Monument, 2508 Historic Decatur Rd., Suite 200, San Diego, CA 92106-6138.

Parr said many community members have made donations toward the monument, and local building industry businesses and trades have been generous with their time and contributions to the project as well.

‘We'd like to raise another $25,000 to assist with the final touches and some of the educational elements/programs that are planned to accompany the site,” Parr explained.

When the project is 100 percent complete, Parr said it will be a symbol of the community.

“The monument is being built just how it was envisioned by the community. Years of committee work, fundraising and other events have turned this place from a vision into a reality,” he said.

“The Cedar Fire of 2003 touched all of us here in Lakeside very deeply and this project has been an opportunity to create something very special from a small sliver of land at the site of Lakeside's newest fire station that was built with the Cedar Fire in mind. The committee owes a great debt of gratitude to many, many people that have helped with this site,” Parr added.

Police say two officers were hurt when a man's gun shot into the ground during an arrest in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

Police were called to reports of a theft inside the Wal-Mart in the 1400 block of North Saginaw Boulevard Saturday afternoon.

On arrival, two officers saw a man carrying a weapon in the parking lot, police said. When officers went to arrest him, the man's gun shot a bullet into the concrete floor. The gunshot sent concrete debris into the legs of the two officers, police said.

Investigators believed the shooting was accidental. The two officers were taken to a hospital as a precaution, but both were expected to recover.

The identity of the man, who was arrested, was not immediately released. Police did not disclose information on potential charges he may face.

A Triumphant Tarantino Returns to Comic-Con

Quentin Tarantino loves movies. He loves watching movies and loves making movies. And after his appearance to promote his latest, "The Hateful Eight," it was also delightfully obvious that Tarantino loves to talk about movies.

Playing to a packed Hall H at Comic-Con Saturday, the "Pulp Fiction" and "Kill Bill" auteur didn't hold back when it came to discussing his upcoming eighth film, the leaked script controversy, his decision to shoot in 70 mm, whether fans will get a "Kill Bill 3," and whether or not he really will retire after making his tenth film.

It was only his second visit to Comic-Con – the first being in 2012 to showcase footage from "Django Unchained" – and that many waited hours to bask in his presence is a testament to how highly he's regarded by his fans. A sentiment echoed by his players, all of whom were in attendance except for Samuel L. Jackson who delivered a special video message before the panel got underway, a virtual cinematic history lesson.

Joining Tarantino were Bruce Dern, Michael Madsen, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tim Roth, Demian Bichir and Walton Goggins – the eight (minus Jackson, Saturday) who comprise the titular group in a 19th century tale about bounty hunters forced to seek shelter during a blizzard.

Tarantino debuted seven minutes of footage from the film, which will be released at Christmas, as well as a new poster.

Here's what we learned:

About the movie: The scenes gave a brief introduction to the eight lead characters, and Tarantino confirmed at the end of the panel the score was composed by legendary, veteran composer Ennio Morricone ("The Good, the Bad and the Ugly," "A Fistful of Dollars," "The Mission"). "This will be his first Western score in 40 years," announced Tarantino

It's beautiful: Shot in 70 mm film it's a sweeping vision of the frozen frontier. Of his choice of format, Tarantino said it was as much about cinema history as it was about aesthetics. Of digital production he said, "That's not the industry that I signed up for." He loves real film and that's all he wants to shoot with. He also prefers watching movies on film. "If I shoot in 70 mm, then they have to screen it in 70mm," he added.

On the leaked early version of the script: Tarantino stressed it was a first draft that surfaced online and he planned at least two more versions before filming was to begin. "There were certain plot threads that I didn’t tie up yet," he said. Of the brouhaha that ensued – he eventually brought a lawsuit against the website Gawker – he said with a shrug, "It got more publicity than I wanted it to get."

On whether he will in fact retire after 10 films: Of statements he made last year saying he would step away from cinema after completing his tenth movie, he assured fans at the pace he works he'll still be behind a camera for at least another 10 years. "We’ll see what ends up happening," he said. "I usually make 3 movies a decade. This is number two for this decade. It’s still another decade after. ... I might just say to hell with it and make 15."

His actors adore working with him: Those on the panel had nothing but praise for Tarantino. Madsen called him "the best director on the planet." According to Dern he has "the greatest attention to detail of any director who has ever lived." Russell said working with the director was the best experience of his career.

Will he ever make "Kill Bill 3": "Never say never," Tarantino said. "Uma would really like to do it and we talk about it every once in a while." At this the Hall H crowd went wild.

Would he move to television? "Maybe there are 10 movies but three mini-series for television," he said, again to the delight of those seated before him. "My scripts get cut down anyway. If I wrote a script and it’s eight hours, then we’ll be all good."

Ambulance Crash Kills Patient

An ambulance carrying a patient crashed head-on with a car in Pasadena, California, on Saturday, killing the patient and injuring three other people, police said.

The collision took place about 4 p.m. on Fair Oaks Avenue near Mountain Street, officials with the Pasadena Police Department said.

The ambulance patient, a man in his 70s, suffered a head injury in the collision and went into cardiac arrest, police said. He was taken to the hospital, where he died a short time later.

"We don't know exactly what happened inside the cabin of that ambulance that led to that serious injury," Pasadena police Lt. Jesse Carrillo said.

Prior to the crash, the patient was being taken to the hospital for a non-emergency medical appointment, Carrillo said. The ambulance did not have its lights or siren on when the collision occurred.

The LifeLine ambulance driver and another EMT were hospitalized in serious condition, Carrillo said.

A woman behind the wheel of the other car, a Jaguar, suffered a broken ankle.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.

It was just shocking. It's so quiet and all of a sudden that just happened," said neighbor Joselin Cegura.

Drivers were advised to avoid Fair Oaks Avenue between Hammond and Mountain streets as police investigated.

Baltimore mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake had a large cup of water thrown on her Saturday at a community event at the mall where violence erupted in the city in April.

Police have arrested Lacheisa Pailin-Sheffer, 37, of Baltimore and charged her with second-degree assault.

The mayor was unhurt, her press adviser told WBAL-TV in Baltimore.

"I didn't know what it was that she threw at me," Rawlings-Blake told the Baltimore Sun after the incident. "I hope it was water. It was more shocking than anything else."

Rawlings-Blake was attending the Mondawmin Festival, a community event that promised "free food, art, basketball, obstacle course, and over 60 non-profit and agency booths offering resources direct to residents," according to the events listing on the City of Baltimore's web page.

In April, people took to the streets in Baltimore to protest the death of Freddie Gray in police custody. On April 27, the protests grew violent in the neighborhood near Mondawmin Mall.

The protests erupted into riots and looting that led the state of Maryland to declare martial law in the city.

Woman, 89, Wrestles With Intruder

Quick thinking helped an 89-year-old Califronia woman chase away a robber who had forced his way into her Burbank home, police said Saturday.

Gerri Dickins was home alone Friday night when she heard a knock at the door and opened it to see a man she didn't know.

"I opened it up a little bit, and he pushed his way in and then he said, 'I came here to take your things,'" Dickins said. "And I said, 'I have no things.'"

When Dickins tried to fight back against the intruder, he threw a chair and footstool at her, and placed a sheet over her mouth when she screamed.

"We wrestled with each other," Dickins said.

He also grabbed the phone when she tried to dial 911, but thanks to a medical alert system, Dickins was still able to call for help.

"It was on the console on the kitchen counter," said Dickins' daughter, Tracey Cawdrey. "She had presence of mind all the way."

The man also threatened to shoot Dickins, though she said she never saw a gun.

"He said, 'I'm gonna shoot you.' I says, 'Go ahead and shoot me,'" Dickins said.

The man spent about a half hour inside the home but didn't take anything valuable, Dickins said, and fled before police arrived just after 8:20 p.m.

Dickins was treated for cuts and bruises on her arms and face, and though Burbank police said that she shouldn't have fought back, Dickins said she would do it again if necessary.

"It makes me mad," she said.

Burbank police described the intruder as a man about 30-years-old, 5 foot 9 inches tall with a medium build and dressed in dark clothes.

Anyone with information is asked to call Burbank police at 818-238-3000.

Fans Feast on "Hannibal"

$

Swarming with signs that read “Fannibal Forever,” Ballroom 20 in the San Diego Convention Center became a hot spot late Saturday afternoon as the San Diego Comic-Con panel for the recently canceled NBC show “Hannibal” got underway.

Executive producers Martha De Laurentiis and Bryan Fuller walked on stage to a room of screaming fans, and the cheers only grew louder as they were joined by actors Hugh Dancy and Richard Armitage.

These fans, or “fannibals,” quickly became the core of the celebrity discussion. Despite the show being cancelled after three seasons, Fuller voiced, many times, how grateful he was to have such a strong fan base.

“It’s wonderful to see a show with low ratings have such a huge amount of support from fans,” he said, wearing a scarf one of the fans had woven for him.

Based on the characters from Thomas Harris’ famous novels "The Red Dragon" and "The Silence of the Lambs," Hannibal works as a loose prequel and reimagines the iconic relationship between Dr. Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham.

Danson plays Will Graham, the troubled FBI criminal profiler, who, while hunting down serial killers, seeks the psychiatric help of Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen). Lector is actually one of the killers he is searching for.

Armitage plays Francis Dolarhyde, a serial killer known as The Tooth Fairy, due to his tendency of biting the skin off his victims. Dolarhyde’s plotline is still unfolding within the ongoing third season.

Stunning cinematography, an intense score, poignant dialogue and deeply complex characters are all hallmarks of this twisted psychological thriller.

After fans finished screaming over the sight of Armitage’s naked torso during an exclusive preview of the remaining episodes, the floor opened up to audience questions that displayed the rich relationship they have with the show.

Dressed as the black stag, a reoccurring motif within the show that represents Will’s slow realization of Lecter’s murderous capacities, “fannibal” Christine Andelfinger discussed the darkly alluring nature of the show with NBC 7.

“It’s an extremely emotional show,” Andelfinger said, “it’s visually moving and the dialogue is so complex. People really connect to the emotional stories of the characters.”

Dierdre Murphy echoed this sentiment, saying that no other show has ever impacted her so much.

She attributed the highly active fan base to the nuanced performances of the lead actors and the artistic beauty of each episode.

When asked about the gruesome violence depicted in the show, Andelfinger’s sister Nicole defended the show’s bloody plotline.

“Even though the violence is so shocking, there’s a reason behind each death,” she said. “The violence is uncomfortable but you see the consequences the characters face, which is really interesting.”

Andelfinger, Murphy and Nicole all agreed the show has a real impact on Millennials, discussing how the rise of streaming services such as Amazon Prime and social media sites like Tumblr created such a strong “fannibal” community.

“I work two jobs and still can’t afford cable,” Nicole told NBC 7, “but I watched Hannibal online. I don’t think the low ratings represented the enormous amount of online support for the show. I hope they continue it somehow.”

Clearly thinking in this vein, Fuller hinted at the possibility of a feature film, and Dancy commented he is fully committed to reprising his role whenever possible.

Whatever the fate of Hannibal turns out to be the appetite of the fans has only increased, and the supportive relationship between the cast and the ”fannibals” will surely remain strong.

Manhattanhenge to Be Seen This Weekend

Manhattanhenge, the moment when the setting sun aligns precisely with the street grid in Manhattan, can be seen again this weekend.

Half the sun will align with the grid on Sunday at 8:20 p.m; the full-sun Manhattanhenge will happen on Monday at 8:21 p.m., according to the Hayden Planetarium.

The best view can be seen as far east in Manhattan as you can go without losing view of New Jersey. Good spots are cross streets like 14th, 23rd, 34th, 42nd and 57th streets.

Manhattanhenge happens twice a year; it happened earlier this year at the end of May.

On a clear day, the typical resulting effect of Manhattanhenge is a "radiant glow of light" across the skyscrapers and buildings, "simultaneously illuminating both the north and south sides of every cross street of the borough's grid," according to Hayden Planetarium.

Show us your Manhattanhenge photos by uploading them here or uploading them on Instagram or Twitter with hashtag #NBC4NY!

Gas Prices Spike in Largest Daily Increase Since 2012

Gas prices in San Diego spiked from Friday to Saturday morning by nearly 10 cents as prices in the area continued to climb.

The average price of a gallon of regular in San Diego is now at $3.75, more than 8 cents in one day. That marks the largest daily increase since October 2012.

Analysts blame the sharp increase on the lack of both gas produced in California and imported fuel.

The price gas stations are paying to fill up their supply are up between 40 and 60 cents a gallon, Consumer Bob reported Friday.

He said gas prices are up because supply is down.

Bride's Wallet Stolen on Wedding Day

A San Diego bride's wedding day turned into a nightmare, when someone stole from her while she was getting married.

Michelle Wilcox Tietz and her new husband exchanged vows June 7 in the Pala Mesa Resort in Fallbrook.

During the ceremony, she says someone broke into her bridal suite and took her wallet.

"Someone knew I was a bride, getting married and went in and took my stuff and knew they wouldn't be discovered,” she said.

She admits the room was “definitely chaotic” with family members coming in and out but she said she knew exactly where her purse was before the ceremony because she had to pay the makeup artist.

The next morning as the newlyweds stopped at a gas station, she realized her wallet was missing.

“That’s how we started our honeymoon,” Tietz said.

Through her bank's mobile app, she found $1400 in charges beginning at a gas station along State Route 76 and then at a number of stores in Escondido including Target, T.J. Maxx, Albertsons and CVS.

She’s hoping someone will come forward with information on the suspect and contact the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department in Fallbrook.

Tietz has even posted surveillance images from one of the stores to her Facebook page and has received a few potential leads.

“Please, somebody knows her. If she’s done it to me, I can’t even imagine it’s the first time she’s done it,” she said.

Luckily, her passport and checkbook were in a suitcase along with some cash so she and her husband were able to still go to Canada for their honeymoon.

Tietz said the Pala Mesa resort and its head of security have been more than helpful.

Even so, the incident marred what should be a happy memory.

“I’m always going to remember that my wallet was stolen from the bridal suite,” she said.

Entangled Whale Saved From Shark Off Mass. Coast

A team of scientists from the Center for Coastal Studies was researching humpback whales off the coast of Massachusetts on Saturday when they made an unsettling discovery: A humpback was drifting near the surface, so badly entangled in a rope that it could not swim.

The rope was lodged in its mouth and wrapped multiple times around its tail, preventing it from swimming or using its tail for defense. The whale was effectively "hogtied," according to a statement from CCS, which is based in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

To make matters worse, a 15-foot-long great white shark was circling the humpback — and it had taken a few bites out of the vulnerable whale.

By the time the Marine Animal Entanglement Response team from the CCS arrived to help free the whale on Stellwagen Bank, it had suffered a "relatively large wound" on its left flank.

Because the great white was still circling the whale when the rescue team arrived, rescuers worked from aboard the 35-foot-long response boat Ibis to cut the rope from the whale's mouth. No longer hogtied, the humpback could swim again — but the rest of the rope was still tangled around its tail.

Once the shark swam away, the rescue crew jumped into a small rubber dinghy and tied a work line to the rope around the whale's tail. As the whale towed the dinghy behind it, the rescuers used a special hook-shaped knife at the end of a long pole to cut away the rest of the entanglement.

Finally freed from the rope, the humpback whale "sped off" out to sea.

The Marine Animal Entanglement Response team has freed more than 200 large whales and other marine animals — including dolphins, porpoises and sea turtles — since 1984, according to its website.

Boaters off Massachusetts are urged to report any entanglement sightings of whales, sea-turtles and other marine animals to the Marine Animal Entanglement Response Hotline (1-800-900-3622) or the U.S. Coast Guard, and to stay by the animal at a safe distance until trained responders arrive, according to the CCS site.

The driver was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital. His condition is unknown.

"She Was Blue": Good Samaritan Describes Cliff Rescue

Between the sound of the surf at La Jolla Cove Friday evening, Jacob Petty and a friend heard cries of despair.

“We heard someone yelling for help,” Petty told NBC7. “It didn’t sound that frantic or distressed."

The cries were coming from beneath their perch on lookout point Friday night. In the distance, Petty said he saw two young people in the water, in dire need of help.

“The young female was on her back and appeared to be unconscious and the young male was waving his arms, treading water and struggling,” Petty said.

The 23-year-old La Jolla man says his friend called 911 while he jumped into the ocean, swimming out about 15-feet to save the 16-year-old girl. The swimmer pulled one of the victims to the rocky reef, where lifeguards took over the rescue.

“I'm not the best swimmer,” Petty said. “But I knew I could hold on a minute at least. If I could get back on the shore, the lifeguards would know where both of us were and keep her from going into the caves. We pulled her on the rocks, she wasn’t breathing. We could barely feel a pulse and she was blue in face.”

The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials airlifted the teen to the hospital and the man, who lifeguards said on Friday had more serious injuries, were taken by ambulance to the hospital, where they performed CPR.

Lifeguards said the girl was alert and talking when she was pulled out. They say the man, in his 20s, was found underwater near the entrance to Sunny Jim's Cave.

Officials say both nearly drowned.

Petty, a culinary student, was just thankful he was able to help.

“I don’t know if I'm a natural helper,” Petty said. “I think it’s something instinctual when you see someone who needs help. I think most people want to help people and want to do what they can to help each other.”

It is unclear how the two got into the water in the first place, but Petty said the girl’s cell phone was in her pocket.

'Fear the Walking Dead' Spinoff Rises at Comic-Con

The "Walking Dead" franchise is going on a bender.

The upcoming spinoff series, "Fear the Walking Dead," premiered during Comic-Con after a panel that introduced the cast of the new zombie apocalypse drama to 6,500 fans.

"It starts as a family drama, and we filter the apocalypse through that," executive producer Dave Erickson told the audience Friday in Hall H, the largest venue at the San Diego Convention Center.

"Fear the Walking Dead" is serving as a prequel to the hugely popular "Walking Dead" series and will be examining how the zombie apocalypse started in Los Angeles. The AMC companion show takes place during the weeks that "Walking Dead" protagonist Rick Grimes was in a coma outside Atlanta in that show's first episode.

The cast and crew of "Fear the Walking Dead" were on hand for the invite-only screening of the first episode at Reading Cinemas.

The initial installment centered on guidance counselor Madison (played by Kim Dickens) and her recently divorced partner Travis (Cliff Curtis) seeking help for her heroin-addicted son Nick (Frank Dillane), who recently woke up to discover that his girlfriend had apparently become undead.

"We, the audience, know something they don't know from watching `The Walking Dead,"' AMC President Charlie Collier said before the screening. "We know the looming dangers ahead. These characters are going to have to figure it out."

The moody first installment focused far less on the flesh-eating action depicted in "The Walking Dead" and more on emotional tensions between family members, including Madison's savvy daughter Alicia Clark (Alycia Debnam-Carey), as they coped with Nick's addiction.

After the screening, the "Walking Dead" and "Fear the Walking Dead" casts mingled together at an after-party inside a re-creation of the condemned church where that first walker -- the franchise's preferred term for zombies -- is glimpsed.

"The Walking Dead," which originated as a graphic novel, has become a staple of Comic-Con, the four-day celebration of pop culture that continues through Sunday.

"Fear the Walking Dead" is set to debut Aug. 23.

If you aren’t excited about NBC’s new show “Blindspot”, you haven’t talked with Jaimie Alexandar.

The show’s star, who plays “Jane Doe”, stopped by the NBC Blogger Party at Comic-Con to talk tattoos, stunts, and Navy Seal training.

The show centers around Jane Doe, who is discovered naked in Times Square, completely covered in mysterious and intricate tattoos. She has no memory of who she is or how she got there.

There's one tattoo that is impossible to miss: the name of FBI agent Kurt Weller, emblazoned across her back.

"Jane," Agent Weller and the rest of the FBI quickly realize that each mark on her body is a crime to solve, leading them closer to the truth about her identity and the mysteries to be revealed.

The show comes from Executive Producer Greg Berlanti ("The Mysteries of Laura," "The Flash," "Arrow").

"Blindspot" premieres Monday, September 21 at 10/9c.
