School Bus Batteries Stolen From Yard: PD

The Chula Vista Police are investigating a series of thefts that left 19 buses without batteries.

Employees reported the thefts on July 3 and July 5, Chula Vista Police Lt. Fritz Reber said, and in both cases the suspect cut a hole in a chain-link fence to gain entry to a secured yard.

On July 3, ten buses lost a total of thirty batteries valued at $125 each were stolen. On July 5, nine buses were hit and 27 batteries valued at the same amount were stolen. Each bus had three DEKA-brand batteries.

"It's the first time in my memory so many have been taken in such a short time," said Reber.

Other buses in the yard had their compartments entered but did not have batteries gone, according to Reber.

The school district replaced the batteries almost immediately, buying new ones just a block away.

Now, detectives are scanning websites to try to find the stolen property.

"We're checking some social media sights, eBay, to see who is selling them, who is buying them, what the demand might be out there," said Reber.

On the secondhand market, bus batteries are purchased for construction equipment, motor homes and backup power for solar panels.

If stealing batteries sounds like a minor offense, police said it can add up. The theft of 57 batteries adds up to 19 felony counts.

He said there is no surveillance video of the incident and there is no suspect information, but police did collect fingerprints. They said they have yet to identify someone based off those fingerprints.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Chula Vista police.

Two young men were shot in the street near Otay Mesa late Thursday and one of them died shortly after getting to the hospital, officials said.

San Diego Police are investigating the shooting that happened around 11 p.m. in Palm City, a community north of State Route 905 and east of Interstate 5.

Officers found two young men, ages 25 and 22, in the street and on the sidewalk when they arrived to the scene on Palm Avenue near Desty Street.

Emergency personnel rushed both men to the hospital. The 25-year-old man died of his injuries. Officials have said he’s from Chula Vista but have not released his name.

A family member identified the man killed in the shooting as Robert Soria. They say he was married and had one son. Soria's cousin by marriage, Alex Valladares of Imperial Beach, was injured and hospitalized according to the family member.

Investigators have been collecting evidence and questioning witnesses.

Witnesses report a man walked up to the one of the victims and began arguing, police said.

The other victim then walked up.

That's when witnesses say the gunman pulled out a handgun and shot both victims.

The gunman, described as a man in his 20's, wearing blue pants and a blue shirt, fled in an unknown direction. There is no suspect vehicle description.

A fatal shooting was reported near 3rd Avenue and Palomar Street an hour after this incident.

Investigators say they have been and will be in contact with Chula Vista police throughout the day to see if there is any connection.

Talks between Iran and six world powers, including the U.S., will go through Monday as negotiators continue to work on reaching an agreement on Iran's nuclear program, NBC News reported.

Issues still to be resolved include a U.N. arms embargo on Iran and access for inspectors to military sites in Iran.

The current round of talks had missed two deadlines already and had been extended to Friday.

Kansas Officer Shows Mercy on Shoplifting Mom

Sarah Robinson was caught shoplifting but never went to jail. That's because the officer called to the scene of the crime couldn't bring himself to arrest her and instead picked up her tab.

Robinson had attempted to steal $300 worth of merchandise, including diapers, children’s shoes and baby wipes at a Wal-Mart in Roeland Park, Kansas, NBC affiliate KSHB reported. She explained to Officer Mark Engravalle that she was homeless and living out of her car with her six children after her husband died in an accidental drowning four years ago.

“What she did was wrong, but I think her heart was in the right place with wanting to take care of her children,” said Engravalle, a father of two himself.

He noticed that three of her children were barefoot and had dirty feet, so he bought diapers and wipes from the store and sent Robinson’s 16-year-old daughter to pick out shoes for her sisters.

The officer paid for it all himself.

Engravalle did write Robinson a ticket, but the mother is grateful that she wasn’t arrested and that her children weren’t taken away. Her case is pending in the Roeland Park Municipal Court.

“He did something that will never be forgotten,” Robinson told KSHB. “He helped us when nobody else would.”

Roeland Park police are also handling donations for the family and can be reached at 913-677-3363.

Driver Convicted in Fatal DUI Crash Sentenced

A San Diego man convicted of driving under the influence and killing three passengers in a crash was sentenced Friday.

William Cady, 26, watched in court as a slideshow remembering the victims played. Cady was sentenced Friday to 18 years in prison for gross vehicular manslaughter. He was acquitted on charges of second-degree murder.

Taylor Bernardski, 29, Shon Gilliam, 23 and Jeffrey Becker, 35, were killed when Cady’s Cadillac Escalade crashed on Jan. 10, 2014.

Jeffrey's mother Candice Coffed spoke during court, addressing the man who was convicted of killing her son.

"I will never live what was once my normal life again, I must now discover a new normal to live by," Coffed said through tears.

Jeffrey left behind a now-8-year-old daughter, she said, and was saddened that he would never have a father to see her grow up, get married or have children.

"Your honor, I beg of you to hand down to Mr. William Cady the maximum sentence," Coffed said, speaking to the judge. "So he will be unable to do this horrific thing or anything close to it to anyone else."

The SUV was traveling an estimated 87 to 97 mph on the transition ramp from northbound Interstate 805 to westbound state Route 52 when it lost control.

In her closing argument, the prosecutor told jurors that a judge had warned Cady of his alcohol use three years before the fatal crash.

In 2011, Superior Court Judge Melinda Lasater told Cady, “You can't afford to have alcohol in your life.”

However, Deputy District Attorney Makenzie Harvey said Cady's blood-alcohol content was somewhere between .10 and .18 at the time of the crash.

Cady's choices to drink alcohol, smoke pot and get behind the wheel of his SUV, along with his reckless, aggressive attitude, made for a "deadly combination" that night, Harvey said.

Throughout the trial, defense attorney Rick Layon told jurors Cady was guilty of gross vehicular manslaughter and DUI but said his client was not guilty of murder.

In her victim impact statement, Coffed said her son, Jeffrey, was a caring and compassionate individual that would give someone the clothes off his back and the shoes off his feet if they needed them.

"I often wake up in the night in tears and in sheer terror of how my son suffered before leaving this earth," Coffed said.

She said she was now a part of the 'Dead Child's Club,' as she called it, and did not wish that on anyone else.

Comic-Con Helps Vet Find Healing, New Career

A San Diego veteran, injured in a random crime, found inspiration through a long-lost love of art and comics.

John Murphy's eight-year military career was cut short when he suffered a traumatic brain injury as a victim in a home invasion.

He says it was his experience at last year's Comic-Con that helped to launch his second career - drawing comics.

“The characters are really aspects of myself,” Murphy explained.

His journey into the comic book world has been a long one.

He’s always had a love for creating but it was put on hold after this retired Navy Dive Medical Technician was attacked during a violent home invasion.

“I didn't recall anything that had been happening in my life for quite some time. I don't know how I was rendered unconscious or for how long,” Murphy said.

It was during his therapy that he was able to reconnect with what he once loved.

Last year, his trip to Comic-Con connected him with the owner and creator of Monkey Brain, an online comic company.

Murphy said he left that meeting inspired to create his own comic.

Now, it's become an experience that has helped him heal, in more ways than one.

"This affords me some small measure of belief in myself,” Murphy said.

He will be at Comic-Con this weekend meeting with his mentor to share his creation. He’s hoping this story will help to inspire others, especially other veterans who are in therapy.

"I Just Love Them": Fans Spot "Hunger Games" Cast

A crowd of “Hunger Games” fans waited outside the Spreckels Theatre in downtown San Diego Thursday to catch a glimpse of the stars from the films, hoping to share a special moment with their idols.

Lead actors Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth and Jennifer Lawrence were whisked into the theatre around 3:30 p.m. so they could tape their appearance on Conan O’Brien’s TBS talk show, which is broadcasting from Spreckels Theatre through Sunday, during San Diego Comic-Con International 2015 (SDCC).

As the stars quickly made their way in through the side door on Broadway Circle – just across the way from the NBC 7 studios – excited fans screamed their names and cheered.

One of those super fans was Alexandra Meza, who stood outside Spreckels for hours waiting to see her favorite actors.

When she saw them for a brief second, she was overwhelmed with emotion and began tearing up.
“I literally wanted to pass out,” Meza told NBC 7. “I got to say hi, they waved.”

“I just met Jennifer Lawrence!” she added, eagerly.

Meza planned to stick around until after the taping to see Lawrence, Hutcherson and Hemsworth once more with hopes of getting an autograph or a selfie with them – especially with Lawrence.

“If she can just make eye contact with me – that would make my day. I would make, like, forever,” said Meza with a laugh.

Meza said she was over at Comic-Con earlier in the day checking out the highly-anticipated “Hunger Games” panel, which boasted a screening of “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2” – the final installment of the franchise, set to hit movie theaters on Nov. 20.

Her main focus, for Thursday at least, was on all things “Hunger Games,” she said. Meza planned to shift her focus to another favorite, “Once Upon a Time,” by Saturday.

San Diego resident Diego Castro was also among the lucky fans who saw “The Hunger Games” cast Thursday outside of Spreckels Theatre.

“I can die in peace now,” he half-joked.

Castro told NBC 7 he woke up early and was at Comic-Con by 8 a.m., waiting all day to see the cast at different locations in downtown San Diego.

He said seeing them in person – especially Hutcherson – was really important for him as a fan.

“I just love the series. I relate to the series in so many ways. I just love them,” he added.

At Thursday’s Comic-Con panel, the three actors said ending the four-film series has been deeply emotional. Lawrence told fans she feels that she and her Katniss character will forever be connected.

“I don't think I'll ever say goodbye to her," she said.

Man Finds This Object in His Skin

Pat Schottler didn’t think much about a large bruise on his leg and five puncture wounds after a day of water skiing, but during a visit to the doctor a few days later, things took an unusual turn.

Schottler, 35, said he assumed he hit a stick while skiing on Medicine Lake in Minnesota, NBC affiliate KARE 11 reports.

It wasn’t until his wife encouraged him to visit an emergency room that he found out what the bruise actually was.

Doctors ordered an X-Ray of his leg, which they thought would show a broken fibula, but instead showed a “foreign object embedded in his leg,” Schottler’s wife Julie Schottler told KARE.

That foreign object was something the couple never expected—fish fin.

Schottler told the station doctors removed four pieces of from fish his leg, the longest one being nearly three-fourths of an inch. He said the fin likely came from a bluegill.

NFL Pros Stand-Up Paddle Board in San Diego

$

This is not what most people would consider a typical San Diego beach vacation.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees and other teammates are barefoot on a small, secluded beach going through sweat-drenched drills that have them sprinting, jumping and doing push-ups in the sand to the sounds of the surf, seagulls and the piercing screams of encouragement from the trainers.

But the players look happy.

They are even laughing.

And they are looking forward to the last exercise of the day which is stand up paddle boarding, a sport many of these elite athletes have never tried but which looks easy to the beginner.

Many are about to find otherwise.

Brees tells me, "It will make the most athletic people feel pretty stupid! Anytime you are having to just balance on the water, it’s a different animal.”

The players will get a tutorial first.

Brees’ paddle board trainer Ernest EJ Johnson of Paddle Republic California with his blond dreadlocks, tattoos and years of experience as a competitive paddle board racer lays out the basics and the benefits of the sport.

“It’s good cardio, great core strength. It works your lats and all the muscles in your leg. Plus if you get hot, you can fall in the water,” Johnson said.

Falling in won’t take encouragement.

Immediately after shakily mounting the board on hands and knees, some of these six accomplished athletes start capsizing and quickly realizing that for the novice, stand up paddle boarding can be tougher than it looks.

Saints receiver Seantavius Jones laughs and says, ”It’s not easy at all, probably one of the hardest things I’ve done!”

This day is organized by Brees, who along with many professional athletes, keeps an off-season home in San Diego.

For camaraderie and a chance to be physically ready before the grueling grind of training camp, Brees invites teammates out to San Diego where the future hall of fame quarterback first got turned on to paddle boarding when he was a San Diego Charger.

On the water, Brees notices something that we have: his teammates may be rookie paddle boarders but they are also elite athletes and fast learners.

“They got the hang of it pretty quick but then it becomes who can stay on the longest? Who can race to a buoy the fastest? Who can knock each other off just messing around, having fun?”

Sure enough with sea legs established, some of the players start jousting with each other using their paddles.

We witnessed a drive-by water assault with Saints backup quarterback Ryan Griffin capsizing receiver Nick Toon.

That was followed by a revenge strike on Griffin three minutes later.

And Seantavius Jones, whose shaky start had him falling on his own, was helped backed into the water by good-humored assaults from his teammates.

Jones added, "Trying to knock people off the board? That’s not cool. I’m from Atlanta. I’m not used to doing stuff like this, it’s not cool!”

Joking aside, for these professional athletes a day on the water was a welcome relief from monotonous, typical football training.

For the instructor EJ Johnson, it was a chance to introduce these players to a sport now enjoyed by 2 million people.

And for Brees who put this together, it’s about off-field bonding with his teammates along with sharing a sport that he finds both athletic and peaceful.

“I've fallen in love with it. Out here in San Diego, I've been out here plenty of times and seen dolphins, I’ve seen seals," Brees said. "I haven’t seen any sharks though. I’m not sure I want to roll up on a great white!”

Ellen Pao Steps Down From Reddit

Reddit's embattled interim CEO, Ellen Pao, has stepped down from her lead position at the popular social media site, the website announced Friday

"In my eight months as reddit’s CEO, I’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly on reddit. The good has been off-the-wall inspiring, and the ugly made me doubt humanity," Pao wrote in a post on the site.

"I just want to remind everyone that I am just another human; I have a family, and I have feelings. Everyone attacked on reddit is just another person like you and me. When people make something up to attack me or someone else, it spreads, and we eventually will see it. And we will feel bad, not just about what was said. Also because it undercuts the authenticity of reddit and shakes our faith in humanity."

The announcement was made through a post from Sam Altman, a Reddit board member. Atlman also announced Pao's replacement: Reddit's co-founder and original CEO Steve Huffman.

"Ellen Pao resigned from reddit today by mutual agreement. I'm delighted to announce that Steve Huffman, founder and the original reddit CEO, is returning as CEO. We are thankful for Ellen’s many contributions to reddit and the technology industry generally. She brought focus to chaos, recruited a world-class team of executives, and drove growth," Sam Altman, a Reddit board member, wrote on a Reddit thread.

Last week, multiple sections of Reddit were locked down in protest on July 2 after Victoria Taylor was fired. Taylor was Reddit's former director of talent responsible for the sites' popular AMA (Ask Me Anything) series.

Pao became interim CEO of Reddit in November 2014, replacing Yishan Wong. She received push-back from unhappy users in an effort to make the website more inviting, NBC News reported.

In May, Pao again drew flak for limiting comments that the site perceived as harassment, then shut down some communities that were seen to be harassing people a month later, according to NBC News.

As part of its commitment to gender equality, Reddit doesn't take part in salary negotiations with job candidates, Pao revealed in an April Wall Street Journal interview that drew some criticism.

"She brought a face to reddit that changed perceptions, and is a pioneer for women in the tech industry. She will remain as an advisor to the board through the end of 2015. I look forward to seeing the great things she does beyond that," Altman said in the announcement.

The former Reddit leader first made headlines in March 2015 when a jury decided that a venture capital firm Pao had worked for did not discriminate or retaliate against a female employee in a case that debated gender imbalance in the workplace. The lawsuit claimed Pao was fired when she complained about discrimination at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

"I have told my story and thousands of people have heard it. If I helped to level the playing field for women and minorities in venture capital, then the battle was worth it,'' Pao said, adding that she will return to her career, family and friends.

Womens's World Cup Ticker Tape Parade The First in Decades to Honor Women

The U.S. Women's Soccer Team made history with its third World Cup win, and again when they were honored with a a ticker tape parade in New York on Friday.

This was the first group of women to be honored in a parade in more than three decades.

While ticker tape parades are common place (the most recent was celebrating the 2012 Giant's win in the Superbowl) women have not been honored in a parade since 1984. Men and women were feted after their summer Olympic win in Los Angeles.

It's been even longer since a sole woman was honored with her own parade: Figure skater and gold Olympic medalist Carol Heiss Jenkins, 55 years ago.

And the U.S. women's team are blazing the trail for women's parade involvement even further: they were the first all-women's team to ever receive the ticker-tape treatment.

It was a quick turnaround for the parade; the record-breaking win against Japan came Sunday night, and an official announcement of the parade went out Tuesday.

On Monday, Manhattan borough president Gale Brewer wrote an open letter to New York Mayor Bill De Blasio, calling on him to commemorate the win.

"New York City has a strong history of honoring sports achievements in the Canyon of Heroes, but has never held a parade to honor a women's team," she wrote. "Our newest soccer champions represent an opportunity for New York to recognize that heroes and role models come in all genders."

The next day it was official.

Each person or team to walk the "Canyon of Heroes" earns a metal plaque to be placed along the parade route. Dignitaries, astronauts, and war hero names fill the expanse. The U.S. women will soon have their own plaque to join the others.

The parades have become less frequent as the costs and trash produced by them continue to rise. It's estimated the parade honoring the women's soccer team will cost $2 million. The Giant's parade had workers cleaning up 34 tons of trash, according to the New York Department of Sanitation.

Graham: Trump Comments Hurt GOP

$

Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina toured Insight Technologies in New Hampshire Friday without an entourage or a crowd of die-hard supporters. Still, the Republican presidential candidate is upbeat about his chances of winning the primary.

So why, in spite of poll numbers, is he so optimistic?

"My name's Lindsey Graham," he said. "I've got to get better known, and I've got to get in front of enough New Hampshire voters to tell them why I want to be president. Three challenges - too many terrorists, too much debt, too few jobs — and I'll talk about how to solve those three problems."

While he is in favor of immigration reform, Graham says fellow Republican candidate Donald Trump's inflammatory comments about Mexican immigrants.

"He's saying some pretty outrageous things," said Graham. "It's not about Donald Trump. It's about the process. Donald Trump has done a lot of good things in his life, but his statements about 'all illegal immigrants except some are rapists and drug dealers' is going to dig a hole for my party — which I love a lot — and make it impossible for us to win in 2016."

The senator says national security is his top concern.

"I've never seen more threats to our homeland than I do today. Our policies are failing, and I think I'm the best person in the field, including Hillary Clinton, to reset world order," said Graham. "What President Obama has done is changed world order. We're no longer the leader of the free world, we're just one of many nations."

Also on Friday, Graham applauded his state's decision to remove the Confederate flag that flew in front of the capitol.

"To the families of the victims of the church — the AME church in Charleston — you did a better job of representing my state than I could ever have hoped to have done. This flag coming down is an act of reconciliation. It's all of us saying to people in that church, 'We understand how you feel and we're going to respond to your feelings,'" said Graham. "It is a giant step forward for the state of South Carolina. I've been very proud of my state handling a horrible thing, I'd say pretty damn well."

Tot Rescued at Pool by Off-Duty BP Agent

An unconscious toddler at the bottom of a pool was rescued Monday by his mother and an off-duty U.S. Border Patrol agent, officials said.

The two-year-old boy was not breathing when he was pulled from the bottom of the community pool in Imperial Beach.

Supervisor Border Patrol Agent William Rogers spoke with NBC 7 in an exclusive interview and said when a terrible accident happens it's not unusual for people to get tunnel vision.

Rogers and the boy's mother jumped into the pool to help the child. He says even though he yelled for people to call 911, a paralyzing panic seemed to sweep over even the adults.

"When it's your child and you're right in it it's very paralyzing if you haven't done it before," he explained.

The boy had a pulse so Rogers used his training as a certified EMT to clear the boy's lung of water, officials said.

"Then he started to vomit a little bit got a little water out, he started to cry," Rogers said.

The toddler regained consciousness and emergency personnel arrived to treat him.

Rogers was with his daughter at the pool when the girl noticed the motionless toddler in the water and alerted her father, according to the U.S Border Patrol.

Officials say the child’s mother also jumped into the pool to save her son.

The agent understands the tunnel vision effect. But as a former navy sailor, police officer, firefighter and paramedic, he knew snapping out of it could mean saving the boy's life.

Even though it may seem like he was a super hero that day, Rogers said in reality he did what anyone else can do - administer basic CPR and call 911.

Woman Killed in Chula Vista Street ID'd

A woman was shot several times and killed while walking to a friend's home in Chula Vista overnight.

The 24-year-old woman was walking with her boyfriend on Quintard Street between 3rd Avenue and Palomar Street, returning to a friend's house after going to the store.

As they walked along the street, an unknown man shot the woman three times.

The first 911 calls were received at 12:01 a.m. from witnesses who reported hearing three to four gunshots. When emergency crews arrived, they found the woman dead in the middle of the street.

Family identifies the victim as Pamela Burgos.

"Pam will be most remembered for her love of her family, her incredibly strong spirit, her outgoing and fierce personality and her determination to make everyone around her happy," a family member wrote on a GoFundMe page.

The boyfriend, who was not hurt, was questioned by homicide investigators but was not considered a suspect, officials said.

Investigators closed off a block of Quintard between 3rd Avenue and Palomar Street while they searched for evidence, and detectives went door to door to question neighbors who were awakened by it all.

"I heard three shots. That's what I heard. I didn't hear more than three," said a neighbor.

Most people who talked with NBC 7 were shocked that the victim was so young.

"That's pretty sad," said Margarita Velasco. "A whole life ahead of you and it's gone in seconds. It's pretty bad."

A fatal shooting was reported an hour earlier near Otay Mesa at Palm Avenue and Desty Street.

San Diego Police investigators at that shooting say they have been and will be in contact with Chula Vista police throughout the day to see if there is any connection between the two incidents.

Driver Kicks Out Window in Apparent Road Rage

Suspenseful cellphone videos capture apparent road rage in San Diego’s North County, when a pickup truck driver chased down a car and ultimately kicked in its driver-side window.

The viewer, who sent the two exclusive videos to NBC 7, said it was the craziest thing he had ever seen.

“I was absolutely terrified that morning on my way to work,” said the viewer, who wished to remain anonymous, in an email.

The incident started Wednesday morning near Centre City Parkway and State Route 78 in Escondido, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Witnesses told officials a white Dodge pickup truck cut off multiple cars and slammed on his breaks in front of a Honda Accord.

When the Honda driver took off, the truck followed close behind.

The video shows the two vehicles darting dangerously in and out of lanes and around traffic. Toward the end, the Honda appears to take the Nordahl exit and then drives down the shoulder embankment, back onto the freeway to escape the truck. The tactic did not work.

In the second video, about one mile down the road, the Dodge and the Honda are seen stopped at the right shoulder.

The Honda had slammed into the truck's rear end, so the truck driver ran to the car and kicked out the Honda’s driver-side window, according to the CHP. Shattered glass covered the inside of the car.

In the end, both drivers went to the San Diego County Sheriff’s substation in San Marcos to give their accounts.

The CHP said a complaint will be filed against the truck driver for assault with a deadly weapon, assault and battery, and vandalism. No other cars were hit in the incident, officials said.

“It was so stupid and scary, and people need to relax a little and not do this in life,” the viewer said in the email.

NBC 7 contacted the driver of the Dodge truck for his comment, but he has not returned our calls.

A man wanted on 17 counts of child molestation since January 1996 was arrested at his home in El Cajon, the U.S. Marshals Service San Diego Fugitive Task Force (SDFTF) announced Friday.

Alvin Harrison, 74, was wanted out of Las Vegas for armed sexual assault of a minor under 14 years of age in addition to 16 other counts of child molestation.

The SDFTF, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the San Diego Sheriff’s Department arrested Harrison on Wednesday in El Cajon, where he had been living.

The arrest came after a tip from Las Vegas which was in turn passed along to San Diego officials.

Officers matched the 74-year-old man by comparing photos from 1996 to a current Department of Motor Vehicles photo. He was later arrested at his home on the 1200 block of Persimmon Avenue in El Cajon around noon.

Harrison will later be extradited to Las Vegas.
