A man tried to lure an 8-year-old boy into his vehicle in Rancho Penasquitos, San Diego Police warned Thursday.

At about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, the man walked up to the child playing on the sidewalk of Rancho Penasquitos Boulevard.

Police say he tried to get the boy into his silver Toyota Corolla or Camry sedan, but the boy ran home to tell an adult.

As the man drove away, he punched his own driver's side mirror, causing it to break, according to investigators.

He is described as a light-skinned man in his 20s, wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, black beanie and red pants.

The San Diego Chargers fell to the Raiders 23-20 Thursday in what could be the last home game in Oakland.

It was definitely the last home game for longtime Raiders defensive back Charles Woodson who will retire at the end of the season.

The Chargers led for the majority of the game but fell behind in the 4th quarter when Derek Carr hit Michael Crabtree for a 3 yard touchdown.

The score came shortly after San Diego’s David Johnson fumbled after making a catch and Malcom Smith recovered it and raced deep into Chargers territory.

Josh Lambo hit a 45 yard field goal to force overtime but the Raiders got the ball first in the extra period.

Oakland took a 23-20 lead on a Sebastian Janikowski field goal and then held the Chargers offense on 4th and 3 to earn the victory.

San Diego falls to 4-11. Oakland improves to 7-8.

In a span of five days, both franchises won their final home games of the season. The players saluted their fan bases who fear their squads are moving to the Los Angeles area.

San Diego, Oakland and the Saint Louis Rams are all interested in moving to the #2 TV market in the country but no official decision has been made yet by the league.

All 32 team owners will meet on January 12th and 13th in Houston and a vote is expected then to determine if one or two of those three franchises will be approved to move for the 2016 season.

Taser Request in McDonald Shooting

$

In the weeks since the release of a video showing the fatal police shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald was released, there have been questions as to why officers didn’t use a Taser to subdue McDonald rather than deadly force.

Radio calls obtained by NBC5 through a Freedom of Information Act request Wednesday reveal that the question was also asked just moments before the shooting.

“Someone have a Taser?" an officer radioed from the scene. "This guy is walking away but he’s got a knife in hand."

An officer responds that there there was one coming from Mulligan and Archer.

A dispatcher then replies, asking if any officers closer to the area who had a Taser could “help out.”

McDonald who was allegedly breaking into vehicles at a South Side trucking yard while armed with a knife, was fatally shot by an officer 16 times on Oct. 20, 2014. Dashcam video appeared to show McDonald walking away from officers before he was shot.

It’s not clear from the radio calls whether any officers were at the scene with a Taser before McDonald was shot. But within seven minutes of the initial radio call, McDonald was shot.

The officer involved in the shooting was charged with first-degree murder last month. The dashcam video’s release has prompted the firing of former Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy and sparked a series of protests throughout the city.

Just hours after people lined up to grab Christmas treats at a Delaware bakery, the beloved bakery went up in flames Christmas Eve.

The blaze broke out at Serpe and Sons Bakery on Kirkwood Highway in Elsmere just minutes after closing time around 6 p.m. Thursday and quickly spread, said the state fire marshal.

Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting through the roof. As SkyForce10 hovered overhead a short time later, firefighters from six different companies could be seen going in and out of the building as thick smoke poured from the large building.

Two firefighters required evaluation at an area hospital, said New Castle county dispatchers.

The blaze broke out just hours after people packed Serpe's to pick up cakes, cookies, Italian bread and rolls for Christmas meals.

Photos posted to the bakery’s Facbeook page Thursday morning showed lines out the door:

The Serpe family even turned to Instagram to thank customers as the fire was burning.

No word yet on the extent of damage nor a cause of the fire that left Christmas ruined for at least one family:

The owners didn't want to talk on camera as they watched firefighters douse the blaze. Customers were left devastated.

"I'm actually heartbroken right now, to have it happen on Christmas Eve is horrible," said customer Dana Campbell.

A Riverside man wanted for two killings was detained early Thursday after he held a taco shop employee in Mission Hills hostage, officials said.

The suspect is believed to be connected to two fatal shootings that are part of a crime spree investigation spanning three counties just hours before, authorities said.

The employee in San Diego was working by himself just after midnight Thursday at the Eat Mexican Food restaurant in the 700 block of West Washington Street. That's when the suspect came inside and refused to leave after entering the kitchen area, looking for a bathroom, San Diego police said.

The employee said that the suspect put a gun to his chest and sat him down inside the restaurant.

Prior to being held down, the employee managed to call 911, triggering officers to respond. Then, the suspect walked out of the restaurant, holding the employee by the neck and surrendered. Officers detained the suspect.

Investigators said the suspect was wanted in connection to the killing of a man in Moreno Valley and the fatal shooting of a woman at a gas station in Colton.

Officers arrived around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at an Arco AMPM gas station in the 1200 block of Washington Street in Colton and found the woman suffering from gunshot wounds, according to the Colton Police Department. The victim was transported to a hospital where she died, police said.

Around 5:53 p.m., sheriff's deputies responded to reports of an assault in the 23600 block of Lake Valley Drive in Moreno Valley and found a man dead of apparent gunshot wounds, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.  Two women were also injured in the Moreno Valley shooting.

Details regarding their conditions were not immediately available.

San Diego police had already been looking for the man after they found an abandoned stolen car from Riverside linked to the two homicide case.

The San Diego State Aztecs dominated the Hawaii Bowl with a 42-7 victory over the Cincinnati Bearcats.

Rashaad Penny promptly set the tone by returning the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown.

Later in the 1st half, Carlsbad’s Christian Chapman hit Mikah Holder for SDSU’s 2nd TD and a 14-0 advantage.

Donnel Pumphrey also ran for a score and threw a touchdown pass on a trick play to Dakota Gordon.

Gordon wound up with two touchdowns in the contest.
The Aztecs led 21-0 at halftime and forced three turnovers on defense.

Cincinnati had problems sustaining drives the whole day.

SDSU’s Alex Barrett provided the exclamation point with a Pick-6 in the 4th quarter to push the Aztecs lead to 35-0.

Cincy scored a touchdown in garbage time to avoid the shutout.

San Diego State closed the season on a 10-game winning streak after a 1-3 start.

The 11-3 record included a perfect run through Mountain West conference play and an impressive victory over Air Force in the MW Championship game.

A Stolen Skull, Metal Bands: The Year in Weird, Wacky News

Along with tops news headlines on mass shootings, terrorist activity and the latest pronouncement of the presidential debates, there were stories that involved suspected occult activity and a shot up Dell personal computer.

NBC News rounded up some of the stories that had a tint of the weird and bizarre. There was the Super Bowl TV ad by Nationwide Insurance that featured a kid who is dead.

The thrash metal band GWAR wrangled in court over the remains of their lead singer, Dave Brockie, that they keep under lock and key for an undisclosed reason. But GWAR isn’t the weirdest tale of truth. There’s the macabre story of German filmmaker F.W. Murnau’s skull being stolen. Wax drippings found at the scene suggested that the theft may have occurred during a ritual occult ceremony.

"This has really motivated me to go out and try to keep it alive," he said.

He said hopes to find a new location for his restaurant sometime in the near future.

Hundreds gathered on Wednesday at a mall of Minneapolis to protest the police shooting of Jamar Clark last month.

The protesters gathered in Mall of America's central rotunda on one of the busiest shopping days of the year, and then abruptly walked outside. Many chanted "What do we want? Justice! When do we want it? Now!" Police urged onlookers out of the mall's central rotunda, threatening arrest.

Couple Created Phony Alibi in 'Love Affair Gone Wrong': Feds

$

Prosecutors said a South Bay couple created a phony alibi to avoid arrest in the fatal stabbing of a wealthy Texas man in Baja California, Mexico, in what officials call “a love affair gone wrong.”

David Enrique Meza, 25, and his girlfriend, Taylor Marie Langston, 20, both pleaded not guilty to various charges Thursday in federal court. Meza is charged with interstate or foreign domestic violence resulting in murder and conspiracy to obstruct justice. Taylor is also accused of conspiracy, as well as additional charges of obstruction of justice and making a false statement to a police officer.

Meza and Taylor have a newborn child together and live in Imperial Beach. However, Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexandra Foster said Meza was also involved in a homosexual relationship with the stabbing victim, 52-year-old Jake Clyde Merendino.

“It’s about a love affair gone wrong,” said Foster, referring to Merendino and Meza's relationship.

Meza allegedly stabbed Merendino to death in the early hours of May 2 in Baja California. Merendino’s body was found in a ravine near the highway that links Rosarito and Ensenada.

Foster said Meza killed Merendino, who was a wealthy retiree from Texas, just one day after Merendino closed escrow on a luxury oceanfront condo in Baja. Several days later, Meza allegedly produced Merendino’s handwritten will that made him the sole heir to the victim’s sizable estate.

“He stood to inherit from a will, he stood to inherit as a beneficiary of the condominium in Rosarito, he stood to gain a significant amount from the death of his lover,” said Foster.

The prosecutor said Mexican officials told their U.S. counterparts about the alleged crime, prompting the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s office to begin their investigation.

When questioned by investigators, Meza and Langston allegedly claimed they had been visiting with a friend named “Joe” in Tijuana at the time of Merendino’s murder. But Foster said phone records and Facebook posts contradicted that alibi, and “Joe” told investigators he had not seen the couple for a year and a half and they have never visited his home.

During an interview with FBI agents, Meza admitted to robbing Merendino after they found the victim’s iPad in the couple’s apartment, according to a search warrant. He said he did not murder the victim. A weapon was never found.

Meza and Langston were arrested Wednesday morning at their Imperial Beach apartment. In court, Foster said Meza is a flight risk and a danger to the community. Magistrate Judge William Gallo ordered Meza to remain in federal jail without bail, but Meza will be back in court Monday, Dec. 28 for a hearing that could result in his release on bond.

Meza’s alleged co-conspirator and mother of his infant child can leave jail if her family posts a $50,000 property bond. Langston must stay with her family, as well as find and keep a job or attend school, while she awaits her trial. Langston must also wear a GPS monitor and abide by a court-imposed curfew from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. every day.

Both the prosecutor and defense agreed that Langston was a candidate for bond, in part because she needs to breast feed her infant.

The prosecutor also revealed that Langston had sought and received a restraining order against Meza last year after a domestic violence incident. At that time, a judge ordered Meza not to physically attack or harm his live-in partner, though they continued to live together.

Coach Wrestles Gun From Carjacking Suspect Before Crash: PD

San Diego police and a victim revealed new details Thursday about two harrowing carjackings, during which a baseball coach wrestled a gun away from an armed suspect and a 79-year-old woman rolled out of her car to escape.

Investigators released surveillance images of the "extremely dangerous" suspect who they say kidnapped three people in two carjackings on Wednesday.

At about 10 a.m., the unknown man encountered a 28-year-old baseball coach and 16-year-old student at Hickman Field in Kearny Mesa. Brandishing a handgun, he forced the duo into the coach's Jeep Latitude and ordered them to drive him to Ramona, according to SDPD Robbery Unit Commander Todd Griffin.

With the coach in the driver’s seat, the teen in the front passenger seat and the suspect in the back, they drove until they reached the mountains near Ramona. Not liking his chances for escape and fearing for his student’s life, the coach decided to make a brash move.

He lunged back at the suspect and grabbed his gun, Griffin said. As they struggled over the weapon, two shots were fired into the roof and the Jeep veered off the road, crashing at San Vicente and Wildcat Canyon roads in Ramona. The coach told the teen to run as he held the suspect at gunpoint.

The victim fired two shots at the suspect’s feet, Griffin said, and the suspect ran away, bleeding from his forehead and hand and holding his leg.

At that point, 79-year-old Barbara Roulier saw the bloodied suspect emerge from the woods near the crash. He was trying to wave down a driver.

“He tries two cars in front of me to get them to help and he's saying, 'Help, help,’" she recalled. “And I see blood and I'd have to tell you, the first thing that came to me was the name Samaritan, and I had to help him.”

When she pulled next to the man, she told him to get into her car. He said he was shot and had to get to the hospital. Roulier described him as very distraught, so she said she was praying for him, trying to calm him down.

He responded by telling her not to do anything dumb. With his hand in his pocket, he pointed toward her like he had a weapon.

“He said take a left, and he said, ‘You got to get me off this mountain and avoid the roadblocks and please don’t jump out of the car. Please don’t do anything dumb. Please I don’t want to hurt you,’” Roulier recounted. “He repeated that over and over, which was assuring to me because I felt I made enough rapport with him that if there were a gun, he wouldn't shoot me.”

They drove together for about 20 minutes. But as she neared a shopping center on Main Street, Roulier knew what she had to do. She said she heard a voice telling her to jump.

“I said, ‘Take my car,’ and then I heard, ‘Jump!’ And I had my seat belt loose, and of course the car’s all locked, and I had my eye on where I had to get that door unlocked, and [I] flew, just tucked and rolled and rolled out, this elderly woman here,” Roulier said, laughingly referring to herself. Her kids are now calling the move a “granny tuck.”

The suspect took off in her car. Detectives searching for the stolen vehicle found it Wednesday at the parking lot of Barona Casino off of Wildcat Canyon Road.

According to Griffin, security video shows the suspect leaving the car, tapping on the window of another man’s vehicle and striking up a conversation. He then got into the man’s vehicle, and the two drove away together.

Using the man’s license plates, detectives tracked down the driver and asked him about his encounter with the suspect. He told them the suspect had paid him $40 to drive him back to San Diego. He dropped the suspect off on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, but not before they stopped at a 7-Eleven because the suspect said he was thirsty.

As he bought a bottle of water, he was caught on surveillance cameras, which police copied and made public on Thursday.

The man is still on the loose. Police say he is considered "extremely dangerous," and if you know anything about him or his whereabouts, call the SDPD at 619-531-2000.

Roulier told NBC 7 that if he is caught, the suspect will hear from her again.

"I will be in touch with him," she said. "He will get a letter from me when they find him and he has to face the charges and he will learn about a different kind of love. There's a reason we met. He will not get away. He will not escape making peace with God."

Christmas Brings Record Temps to East Coast

In parts of the U.S. accustomed to cozying up to the fireplace this time of year, Christmas is going to feel more like summer amid another day of record-breaking holiday heat, NBC News reported.

Forecasters say this will be the warmest Christmas Day on record for many cities up and down the East Coast, where temperatures will be between 15 and 25 degrees higher than normal this time of year.

New York City's Central Park reached 66 degrees early Friday, topping the previous record of 64 degrees in 1982, according to the National Weather Service. That high followed an exceptionally balmy Christmas Eve, when the mercury hit a record 72 in Central Park — rivaling temperatures the city saw in July.

Washington, D.C., could see temperatures soar to more than 70 degrees after the morning's low temperature had already set a record high, The Weather Channel reported. Chicago was expecting to see a high 10 degrees higher than normal (44 degrees) and St. Louis 16 degrees higher than normal (56 degrees).

Twelve people escaped a house fire in Lincoln Park early Christmas Day.

A large family was staying at the home on 50th Street when fire broke out in the attic just before 3 a.m.

A San Diego Fire-Rescue captain said the fire started from an electrical outlet that was outside the home.

Flames then spread into the attic of the home and, because of the insulation in the attic, it spread quickly and burned through the entire attic.

The other unit in the duplex was not damaged but residents were without power on Christmas morning.

The San Diego chapter of the American Red Cross was helping the family with blankets and food but the family told NBC 7 they would not need a place to stay. They were going to spend Christmas with another relative in the area.

Unlike Santa Claus, Federal Express wasn't able to make all its scheduled deliveries on Christmas Eve.

FedEx is hoping to ease the disappointment by delivering packages on Christmas Day and opening counters at its Express offices across the U.S. so customers can pick up the gifts themselves. The carrier blames the delayed shipments on inclement weather in parts of the U.S. and a last-minute surge of holiday shopping.

The counters at the Express offices will be open Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. FedEx's other offices will be closed. Household deliveries will be given top priority on Friday.

Customers can find out if their delayed shipment is scheduled for Christmas day delivery or available for pick up by checking at fedex.com or calling 800-463-3339.

Firefighters were battling a 900-acre brush fire that began Friday in Solimar Beach near the 101 Freeway and forced road closures, fire officials said.

About 55 firefighters were at the scene of the fire, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

About 30 homes were threatened by the blaze, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

Officials said multiple fire agencies were assisting with the blaze, including the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the San Bernardino County Fire Department.
