U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers caught a fugitive wanted for sexual assault in Calexico Friday.

Robert Garcia Ledezma hid in a railcar at the Calexico downtown port of entry east of San Diego on the Mexican border.

“This apprehension highlights the fact that none of our inspections are routine,” Calexico Area Port Director Billy Whitford said in a statement. “Each and every day the men and women of U.S. Customs and Border Protection perform their duties realizing this; our mission is to protect our borders and keep our communities safe.”

Border Protection officers saw Ledezma standing on the side of the incoming commercial railcar.

Ledezma jumped from the train attempting to run across the border crossing after officers with the port’s Anti-Terrorism Contraband Enforcement Team approached him.

He was apprehended and taken to a secure location for questioning.

Officers ran Ledezma’s prints and found out he had no legal right to enter the US and that he was wanted for felony sexual assault in Salinas.

Ledezma was taken into custody and booked into the Imperial County jail awaiting extradition back to Mexico.

Ledezma has been placed on immigration hold, and will be sent back to Mexico at the end of his criminal proceedings in the US.

Police are looking for a woman wearing a hospital gown who escaped police custody Sunday night after being taken to the hospital complaining of a medical issue.

Tiffany Neumann, 23, slipped out of her handcuffs and fled New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Lower Manhattan around 9:10 p.m., the NYPD said.

She was arrested Saturday on the Upper West Side on charges of petit larceny, theft of service and criminal possession of stolen property.

Police say she gave them a fake name and told them she was pregnant. Officers took her to the hospital, where she was able to get her hands out of the cuffs. It wasn't clear if Neumann was actually pregnant.

The circumstances regarding the charges against Neumann were unknown.

Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.

Arrieta Throws No-Hitter in 2-0 Cubs Victory

The Chicago Cubs were on a four game losing streak, but their best pitcher was at his best Sunday as Jake Arrieta pitched a no-hitter against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The no-hitter is the first in Arrieta’s career and the first for the Cubs since the 2008 season, when Carlos Zambrano no-hit the Houston Astros in a game at Miller Park in Milwaukee. It is the 14th no-hitter in Cubs team history.

Arrieta only faced 29 batters in the game, with one walk and a Starlin Castro error giving the Dodgers their only baserunners of the game. Arrieta struck out 12 batters total and struck out seven of the 10 batters that reached 0-2 counts against him in the contest.

While everyone in the stadium and on social media was buzzing, there was one person in the ballpark that was apparently unaware that Arrieta was on the verge of history.

"Everyone know what was going on except Justin Grimm," Maddon said. "He had no idea it was a no-hitter, even after the game concluded."

The victory gives the Cubs a five and a half game lead over the San Francisco Giants for the second wild card spot in the National League. The Pittsburgh Pirates also lost on Sunday afternoon, moving the Cubs to within five games of the top wild card spot.

The game marks the first time that the Dodgers have been no-hit at Dodger Stadium since Kent Mercker threw a no-hitter for the Atlanta Braves in April 1994.

San Diegans Organize For Million Man March Anniversary

The African American community in Southeast San Diego is calling for an end to police brutality and black-on-black crime.

Organizers handed out forms for people to sign up for the 20th anniversary of the Million Man March  in Washington DC this fall with the goal of raising $50,000 for at least 50 buses and a handful of flights to take participants from San Diego to DC.

Activist Louis Farrakan brought crowds from all over the country to the nation's captial back in 1995 for the first ever Million Man March. A quarter century later, these organizers want to bring 5,000 San Diegans to join the cause.

“We see that we're fighting a war on two fronts. We see we're fighting a war within ourselves and within poor communities,” said Daivd Muhammad an organizer for the effort. “What also has to be addressed is the institutional racism where we have institutions that are perpetuating injustices."

Farrakhan has been critized in the past for anti-semitic and anti-white views--a criticism he and his supporters deny.

“To categorize us as a hate group that's something to keep people from our message, and our message is to clean up our people," said Muhammad.

The 20th anniversary march in Washington DC is on October 16.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Erika continued to push toward Florida Monday, threatening to bring strong winds and heavy rain to the region, NBC News reported.

Though the storm weakened after wreaking havoc on the Caribbean over the weekend, flood warnings remained in effect through much of Florida Monday morning, while rip currents were expected all the way to the Carolinas.

Meanwhile, in the Pacific, Hawaii residents were preparing for high winds, heavy rain and ocean swells as Hurricane Ignacio, downgraded to a Category 3 storm, makes its way toward the islands.  It is scheduled to pass about 200 miles northeast of the Big Island and Maui, Monday and Tuesday, sparing the state a direct hit.

The mother of the suspect in the execution-style killing of Texas sheriff's deputy Darren H. Goforth said her son cannot be the gunman because he was out shopping with her at the time of the shooting.

Before Shannon Jaruay Miles, 30, was charged with capital murder, his mother told NBC station KPRC that the two had had trouble getting home from their shopping trip because police has surrounded their street.

Miles was brought in for questioning and arrested and charged after ballistics tests indicated that the weapon used in the gas station shooting matched a gun belonging to Miles, Sheriff Ron Hickman said Saturday.

Miles is being held without bond pending his arraignment Monday morning in Harris County District Clerk.

Self-help guru Dr. Wayne Dyer died Saturday at the age of 75, his publisher said on Sunday. The cause of death was not immediately reported.

The media sensation was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia in 2009 and controversially claimed that he was fighting the illness with positive thinking, daily exercise and "psychic surgery" performed remotely by a Brazilian medium.

Dyer's writing — including best-seller "Your Erroneous Zones," which built on ideas espoused by Krishna Rau, the founder of Siddha Yoga — made him a regular on the talk show circuit. Oprah Winfrey was one of the media giants to embrace Dyer, featuring the writer and spiritualist on her show numerous times.

Last year, spiritualist magazine Mind Body Spirit listed Dyer as the eighth most spiritually influential people in the world.

Homicide detectives are investigating after a 42-year-old man was found unconscious in a patrol car and later died, San Diego Police officials said.

The incident happened just before 3 a.m. Sunday morning when SDPD officers received a call about a man trying to jump a fence and cause a disturbance downtown outside the House of Metamorphosis, a drug rehabilitation home.

When officers arrived on scene, they found the 42-year-old man, whose identity has not been released, yelling outside the house on 30th and Market Street.

Police say the man was under the influence of a controlled substance and that they found drugs on him.

The man was then arrested and brought to the men's Central Jail downtown for prisoner processing. When the man was taken into custody, he was cooperative and no force was used, police said.

Police were going to get him out of the patrol car and book him when they noticed he was unconscious. Officers tried CPR, but he did not respond, so they called an ambulance, they said.

The man was taken to UC San Diego, where he died just before 5 a.m.

The officers involved were wearing body cameras that were on, San Diego Police Lt. Manny Del Toro told NBC7. The incident is under investigation.

“We do take this very seriously hence we do have a full homicide team out here with personnel from the lab conducting a full investigation. The officers [involved] will have to undergo a full investigation and they’ll be interviewed. They did have body worn cameras, where we have the entire incident on video. We’ll be investigating that as well,” said Del Toro.

The man had a criminal history, police said. It is unclear whether he was a patient at the House of Metamorphosis or not.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and businessman Donald Trump — the two biggest anti-establishment candidates in the Democratic and Republican presidential primary fields, respectively — have seen their support surge, according to NBC News, citing a new survey of voters likely to participate in the Iowa caucuses.

In the Des Moines Register/Bloomberg Politics poll, Sanders is now polling just seven points behind Democratic front runner Hillary Clinton, nearly doubling his share of the vote since the last survey was conducted in May.

Sanders takes 30 percent support, while Clinton draws 37 percent, marking the first time she's dropped below 50 percent in the poll.

Trump, meanwhile, has seen a remarkable reversal in both his support and popularity in the state since May. Back then, he was polling at just 4 percent support and his favorability was at -36 points; now, he leads the pack with 23 percent support and his favorability is at +26 points.

Man Arrested for Felony Sex Crimes Against Multiple Children

A San Diego-area resident accused of multiple counts of child molestation across a five-year span has been arrested, officials said Sunday.

Richard Sears, 47, was arrested at his home when officials served a search warrant for his home in Escondido, north of San Diego.

"This neighborhood is just shocked," said neighbor Ed Coffey. "That shatters my heart to know that that might have happened to some child."

Perris Station detectives in Riverside County began investigating on Aug. 6 when they received reports of multiple child molestation incidents that happened several years ago in an unincorporated area of Perris. Their investigation led them to Escondido, where the suspect lived.

The incidents allegedly happened between 1999 and 2004, Riverside officials said.

"I'm surprised by it," neighbor John Montville told NBC7. "I think he had European students, exchange students come stay with him once in a while. I always thought that was a a good thing."

Sears has been booked into the Southwest Detention Center on numerous counts of felony sex crimes against several children.

"I believe...he'd bring over [foster children] and house [them] for a week and take them places. I believe he was one when he was young and that is what I thought he did that for, to pay back and give back to those who need help," Coffey said.

Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact Investigator Tom Salisbury, at the Perris Police Department by calling (951) 210-1000.

Beaches Reopen After Close Shark Encounter on Video

Popular San Diego beaches have reopened with a Shark Advisory after a group of kayakers captured their heart-pounding close encounter with a hammerhead shark Saturday on video.

Lifeguards said as of 7 a.m., they had no received additional reports of sharks and would reopen the beach with the advisory until 1 p.m. During that time, lifeguards will warn people heading to the shoreline about the shark sighting so they can make their own decision about swimming in the water.

The kayakers' incredible video prompted lifeguards to close down crowded beaches nearby the encounter in La Jolla.

Their  video shows the 8- to 10-foot shark circling and swimming under the watercraft off La Jolla Shores. Stalking the kayakers, the hammerhead followed them back to the beach as they paddled away, according to San Diego Lifeguards.

When officials saw the footage and noted the shark was exhibiting "aggressive behavior," they took immediate action.

They decided to clear the waters between La Jolla Cove and Scripps Pier, announcing the closure over loud speakers to thousands packed onto the sand.

People swimming near the shark were able to climb onto other kayaks and get safely to shore.

The animal was last seen just outside the surf line at the foot of Avenida De La Playa, at the south part of La Jolla Shores.

Lifeguard crews in boats and a helicopter soon began searching the waters for shark, but no more sightings have been reported. Officials say if they find it, they will track it and make sure it leaves the area before the waters are reopened.

Lifeguards say they brought the kayakers' footage to Dr. Andy Nosal, a marine biologist at Scripps Institute of Oceanography. He said based on the size, species and behavior of the shark, lifeguards were right to close the beach.

"It's not uncommon for these types of sharks to be seen far off shore, but it's uncommon to see it so close to a popular beach like La Jolla Shores," said Lerum.

According to the lieutenant, a similar closure happened in La Jolla a couple years ago when a great white shark came concerningly close to the shore.

As for why the hammerhead was acting aggressively toward the kayakers, Lerum's best guess is food.

"Well sharks are very instinctive," he said. "Usually what causes them to act aggressively is their desire to eat, and so there may have been food in the area that we don't know of." He was not sure if the kayakers had fish on board.

Hammerheads rarely present a threat to humans, experts say. In fact, since scientists began keeping records in the 1950s, there have been just 32 documented hammerhead shark attacks, according to Mike Price, an assistant curator of fishes at SeaWorld.

However, a hammerhead bit into a local diver's hand earlier this month about 100 miles off San Diego's coast.

Obama Seeks to Cement Climate Change Legacy

During his trip to Alaska this week, President Barack Obama will tread gingerly on a receding glacier, talk to coastal villagers whose homes are threatened by eroding shorelines and salmon fishermen whose livelihoods are endangered — all in an aggressive and high profile effort to highlight the impact of global climate change, NBC News reported.

The visit to the Alaskan Arctic — the first by a sitting president — is the culmination of an increasingly forceful climate change policy push over the past two years by the Obama administration.

This week alone Obama invoked climate change during visits to the National Clean Energy Summit in Las Vegas and New Orleans to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

With these trips, Obama is attempting to set the stage for a major international climate change agreement he hopes will come from a summit in Paris in December.

That agreement could help secure his legacy as the first sitting president to address global climate change in a substantive way, environmental policy experts said.

Calif. Family Hopes for 'Miracle' to Save $16K Tree House

An elaborate, three-story tree house in Orange County has gotten a temporary reprieve from building inspectors, but the high rise hide-out may not be out of the woods just yet.

Rossmoor resident Dr. Joni Doherty spared no expense to build the $16,000 tree house that features solar panels, redwood floors, handmade chairs and a top-floor club house.

The tree house was a dream she and her husband Jack Chen — a renowned surgeon — shared before he died in a surfing accident in 2013.

Her two sons wanted their father's memory to live on in the tree house.

Doherty didn't need a permit to build it. But six months ago, she received a letter from the Orange County Department of Public Works for code violations after a neighbor complained.

"They didn't actually have any specific safety issues in that code violation," Doherty said.

She is now applying for a permit and has support from hundreds of her neighbors, who have signed a petition.

"It's a labor of love," said her neighbor, Reina Evans. "Everyone loves this tree house."

Doherty is hopeful and believes her husband is helping her keep their dream alive.

"I feel like he's actually in some way helped this sort of get to the point where it might actually work out, like a miracle," she said.

The next step will be a public hearing, which could take place in several months, she said. But until then, she's been reassured from a county supervisor the tree house will remain in place.

Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansoor became Taliban's new chief last month after the announcement that longtime leader Mullah Omar had been dead for two years.

The announcement sparked a leadership battle. While the Taliban hashes out the dispute over Mansoor's appointment, those loyal to Mansoor on Monday released an in-depth biography of the man. NBC News cannot confirm the veracity of the document's contents as the Taliban's media arm is notoriously unreliable.

According to the bio, Mansoor "speaks less and tries to listen more to other people," he wears "neat and clean clothes" and "is fully conscious of the delicacy and complexity of all contemporary regional and international politics."
