Tom Brady Wins 3rd Super Bowl MVP Award

0
0

As a kid, years before he became a pretty good quarterback in his own right, Tom Brady idolized Joe Montana.

Now, at age 37, Brady owns just as many Super Bowl championships — and just as many Super Bowl MVP awards — as the Pro Football Hall of Famer.

And no QB in history has more.

Brady completed 37 of 50 passes for 328 yards with four touchdown passes, each to a different receiver, including an 8-for-8 bit of perfection on the drive that led to the go-ahead score with about 2 minutes left Sunday night.

That performance, and a victory-clinching interception by rookie cornerback Malcolm Butler, lifted the New England Patriots to a 28-24 comeback victory over the defending champion Seattle Seahawks in a Super Bowl with a slow start and a "Whoa!" finish.

This was not Brady at his best throughout. He threw two interceptions, including one deep in Seattle territory in the first quarter, and another in the third that led to points for the Seahawks.

That's part of why the Patriots trailed 24-14 in the fourth quarter, before Brady got the comeback going.

"It wasn't the way we drew it up. Certainly, throwing a couple of picks didn't help," Brady said. "It was a lot of mental toughness. Our team has had it all year. We never doubted each other, so that's what it took. That was a great football team we beat. I'm just so happy for our team."

Sitting in his family's season-ticket seats at San Francisco's Candlestick Park while growing up, Brady would wear a No. 16 jersey, just like Montana, and cheer for his favorite player's team.

Brady did a fairly good impression of Joe Cool against Seattle.

He connected with Danny Amendola for a 4-yard touchdown with about 8 minutes left. That gave Brady 12 TD passes in Super Bowls, breaking Montana's mark. Then, with 2:02 to go, Brady hit Julian Edelman from 3 yards for TD toss No. 13 in Super Bowls — and, more importantly, the lead.

Brady turned to New England's sideline, pointed, then raised his right fist.

Only after Butler grabbed Russell Wilson's pass from the 1-yard line in the final half-minute could Brady really begin to celebrate, leaping up and down on the sideline and embracing coach Bill Belichick.

Now Brady, Montana and Terry Bradshaw of the Pittsburgh Steelers are the only starting quarterbacks to earn four Super Bowl rings.

At the outset of Brady's career after being a sixth-round draft pick, he and Belichick combined to win three championships in a four-year span, in the 2002, 2004 and 2005 Super Bowls. Brady was the MVP in the first two of those.

But Sunday's victory ended a decade title drought, after losses in the big games in 2008 and 2012, both times against the New York Giants.

"Well, it's been a long journey. I've been at it for 15 years and we've had a couple of tough losses in this game," Brady said. "This one came down to the end, and this time, we made the plays."

Devon Still's Daughter Continues Fight Against Cancer

Leah Still, the four-year-old daughter of Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Devon Still, is continuing her fight against cancer, as her father stands beside her in the battle.

After posting a devastating update on Leah’s condition a few weeks ago via Instagram, Still has not lost hope and continues to make Leah his main priority.

“Football was always my dream,” Still said. “But when you bring a person into this world, and you’re responsible for another life, that has to be your number one priority."

Still and his daughter's story first captured the hearts of the nation last year when the Bengals excused him from activities so he could spend time with his daughter at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The team kept him on the practice squad to start the season even though he was hurt so that he'd keep his medical coverage.

Still has been updating his followers on Leah's condition through his Instagram account. The young girl was admitted Friday, Jan. 20 to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where she is currently undergoing her fifth round of chemotherapy.

The father-daughter team is already planning on making their third trip to Disney World following Leah's release from the hospital Wednesday.

“When you have a daughter, it’s a totally different experience,” Still said. “You do anything to put a smile on your child’s face.”

And Still is willing to go to any length to see his daughter happy.

“If me playing with her Barbies – with her Barbie house, puts a smile on her face, then I’ll do it, regardless of what anybody thinks,” Still said.

Leah and her father are currently working on publishing a book called “I am Leah Strong,” to help raise money for pediatric cancer and other children diagnosed with the disease.

"It's just amazing how much a 4-year-old can handle," Still said. "She still has that upbeat spirit. I think that's what keeps the whole family going. We look at her and she shows no signs of weakness. All you see is the strength that she possesses."

Fla. Boy, 3, Shoots Mom: Police

A 3-year-old boy shot his mother in the leg early Monday in Davie, police said.

The shooting happened shortly before 4 a.m. at a home in the 4800 block of Southwest 59th Terrace.

Police said the toddler somehow got a hold of the gun and shot his mother in the leg. The family was taking the woman to the hospital when they flagged down an officer who called fire rescue.

She was taken to Memorial East Hospital in Hollywood with non-life threatening injuries.

Officers with the Broward County Sheriff's Office child protective team were at the house Monday afternoon interviewing family members in order to determine how the child got a hold of the gun. It is believed that multiple generations of a family reside in the home together.

"From what I am gathering the weapon is not usually stored where the weapon was. It was in a position or a place where the child could gain access to it easily," Davie Police spokesman Capt. Dale Engle said.

The child is expected to stay with the relatives in that house.

It is possible that charges could be brought against an adult in the home for not securing the gun properly, police said.

"It is definitely something we are looking at and I do anticipate at some point that charges may be brought forth towards the parents once we determine who actually owns the weapon," Engle said.

Engle also added that is is a "myth" that a small child is not strong enough to pull the trigger of a gun.

"If you can squeeze your hand then you can discharge a weapon, and there is an obvious fascination with weapons with all kids," he said.

Just imagine – after weeks of preparing for a Super Bowl XLIX party, the power goes out just hours before the big game.

It happened to residents in Escondido Sunday afternoon.

Some residents were preparing food, friends were on their way over and suddenly they found themselves without electricity.

Nearly 200 customers were involved in the outage according to San Diego Gas & Electric.

Resident Randy Bolieu was prepared. He fired up his generator and hooked it up to two televisions and a refrigerator – critical appliances on Super Bowl Sunday.

Tamera Rousell's family didn't have generators but they had they cell phones so, they decided to stream the game live through the NBC.com link.

The Millers were the lucky ones. Without power for the first quarter of the game, they soon had their electricity restored.

However, they say they had a backup plan if it didn't come back on. They were going to head to their neighbor’s home where there was a generator powering a television.

Power has since been restored.

Sunday’s Super Bowl battle between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks was the most-talked about NFL championship ever on Twitter and Facebook, the social media giants said Monday.

There were more than 28.4 million global tweets about the game and halftime show, surpassing last year’s 24.9 million tweets during the Super Bowl, Twitter said.

For Facebook, 65 million people wrote some 265 million Super Bowl-related posts, comments and likes.

Some of the game's highlights generated more buzz than Katy Perry's halftime performance and dozens of commercials.

The most popular moment on Facebook was the Patriots' win (1.36 million people-per-minute). This had the second highest volume on Twitter with 379,000 tweets per minute. Katy Perry’s “Firework” finale at halftime was the second most talked-about moment on Facebook (1.02 million people-per-minute); Perry's halftime show was third on Twitter with 284,000 tweets per minute.

When Malcolm Butler intercepted a pass by Russell Wilson one yard from the goal line with 20 seconds left in the game, Twitter exploded with 395,000 tweets per minute to become the top moment of the night. Butler’s move was the third most popular moment on Facebook, which sparked some 676,000 conversations per-minute.

Women between ages 25 to 34 were the most represented demographic in the conversation about the game on Facebook. The social media platform added that Tom Brady was the most-discussed New England Patriots player, and Marshawn Lynch from the Seahawks.

Swastikas Painted on Jewish Frat

When they woke up on the Jewish Sabbath, students at a Jewish fraternity at UC Davis found two red swastikas spray painted on their house and on the ground behind a door nearby.

Nathaniel Bernhard, vice president of Alpha Epsilon Pi's Davis chapter, told the Sacramento Bee the vandalism took place between 3 and 9 a.m. Saturday. The fraternity house is located off campus.

One swastika was spray painted on the wall of the yellow two-story building, and the other was on the ground outside a back door. After the swastikas were found, NBC affiliate KCRA spotted students waving Israeli flags to combat the hateful icons.

Davis Police Sgt. Trevor Edens told KCRA that police will be monitoring social media to see if anyone starts bragging about what they did.

In a written statement, UC Davis Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi called the behavior “repugnant and a gross violation of the values our university holds dear.”

“Nothing rivals a swastika as a more potent or offensive symbol of hatred and violence toward our Jewish community members,” Katehi said.

The Jewish Federation, the Anti-Defamation League and the Jewish Community Relations Council condemned the graffiti.

ADL Central Pacific Regional Director Seth Brysk, Pacific regional director for the ADL said in a statement that his orgnanization "denounces this heinous expression of hatred. It is deeply shocking and thoroughly repugnant any time a swastika is employed against the Jewish community.  It is even more offensive that this act of anti-Semitism was committed during the same week the world commemorated International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz from the Nazis."

The vandalism comes after the Associated Students of UC Davis passed an advisory resolution asking the UC regents to divest from businesses with connections to Israel, the Bee reported.

Brysk noted the timing of the swastikas, as well.

"We are extremely concerned that this hate crime occurred directly on the heels of a UC  Davis student senate vote supporting the boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement," he said "BDS activists have been known to employ Holocaust imagery and themes in an attempt to garner support for their cause."

As of Monday, no arrests have been made.

A high speed chase ended after the stolen SUV crashed into a tree in Carlsbad, police said.

Shortly before midnight on Sunday, the Carlsbad Police Department was conducting a traffic stop on a Toyota Sequoia near Carlsbad Village Drive off Interstate 5. The SUV did not stop when the police car turned on its lights and siren and instead continued northbound on Interstate 5.

The SUV tried to turn eastbound on Las Flores Drive, but because of the speed at which it was traveling, the car could not make the turn and instead continued ahead and collided with the curb and a tree at the 1200 block of Las Floras Drive.

When officers later checked the car’s registration, they discovered it was an unreported stolen car from Carlsbad.

Two male adults fled the vehicle and head into a field. California Highway Patrol, the San Diego Sheriff’s helicopter and the Oceanside Police Department officials searched the area with a police dog to look for the two men that fled.
Police said they did not find the two men.

The investigating into the stolen car continues.

Judge Yanks Bail for "Suge" Knight

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge on Monday yanked bail for Death Row Records co-founder Marion "Suge" Knight in a fatal hit-and-run because he's considered a flight risk.

A bail commissioner amended Knight's bail from $2 million to no bail due to several factors including his flight risk status, that he is a third-strike candidate, possible witness intimidation and his criminal past, said Nicole Nishida, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Knight is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday to face murder charges. Knight remains at the Men's Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles.

Knight, 49, is accused of using his pickup truck to intentionally run over two men at a burger stand in Compton Thursday afternoon. One of the men was killed.

Knight allegedly had an argument with men. But he claims through his attorney that he struck the two men accidentally as he tried top get away from two other men who were threatening him.

Super Bowl Ad Filmed on San Diego Ship

One Super Bowl commercial took place on a boat that may have looked familiar to some San Diegans.

Intuit TurboTax’s commercial, featuring a Boston Tea Party backdrop, was filmed on the HMS Surprise.

Mark Montijo with the Maritime Museum said the commercial’s filmmakers rolled into town on Dec. 8 and stayed until Dec. 9.

The museum moved the boat slightly further north along the Harbor, across from the San Diego County Administration Center, and crews filmed mostly at night in the bay.

The crews the company used in their two days of filming were larger than the crews one motion picture used several years ago when they spent five days filming on a similar boat.

“It was a big production, they took it seriously,” said Montijo.

The HMS Surprise started off as its life in 1970 as a replica of the 18th century Royal Navy frigate Rose. The ship has been docked at the Maritime Museum since 2004.

An unlicensed teen driver was in custody Sunday after an accident that caused injuries to three, and nearly harmed a baby.

Just after 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon, 18-year-old Elias Mendez of Escondido, who is unlicensed, ran a red light, causing a crash between his Toyota Paseo and a Chevy Impala, according to Escondido police.

Police said Moises Lopez, 18, sustained major injuries to his neck and back, while another 17-year-old passenger had minor injuries. All three were transported to Palomar Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Impala sustained minor injuries, but refused treatment. A 1-year-old baby that was also in the Impala was uninjured, police said.

Mendez, who is to blame for the crash, was believed to have been under the influence of marijuana at the time and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, felony DUI causing injuries and driving without a license, according to police.

Warren Sapp Arrested: Police

Warren Sapp was arrested after police say he solicited and assaulted at least one prostitute early Monday morning at a hotel in downtown Phoenix, where he had been covering the Super Bowl for the NFL Network hours earlier.

The former All-Pro defensive tackle for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders had begun arguing over money with two women in a hotel room, and the argument soon spilled into the hallway and turned physical, police said.

Sapp admitted to having hired a prostitute but denied assaulting the women, police said. Both women had minor injuries that appeared to have resulted from a struggle, according to investigators.

Sapp was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on misdemeanor charges of soliciting prostitution and two counts of assault.

It was not immediately clear whether he had a lawyer. The NFL Network did not immediately respond to requests for comment but said a statement was forthcoming.

One of the women was cited for prostitution and released, and the other was cited for violating the city's escort permit requirements and released, police said.

Sapp, who played for the Raiders from 2004 until 2008, now works as an analyst for the NFL Network. He was in Arizona over the weekend to cover Sunday's Super Bowl.

Sapp played college football for the University of Miami until he was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1995. Prior to the 2004 season, Sapp signed with the Raiders, the same team he had helped defeat in Super Bowl XXXVII.

Manhole Blast Flings NYer Into Air

A man was flung into the air by the force of a weather-related manhole explosion in Brooklyn Monday, according to Consolidated Edison and fire officials. A second person was also injured.

The man, who had been walking on the street at the time of the explosion on Prospect Park West between Fourth and Fifth streets shortly before noon, apparently was hit in the head by the flying manhole as he was flung into the air, utility and city fire officials said. He was taken to a hospital.

It wasn't clear if the second injured person also went to a hospital. The conditions of the victims weren't immediately available.

Con Edison said that ice-melting road salt seeped under the manhole cover causing the blast. It shattered windows and could be heard and felt from as far as 10 blocks away, according to witnesses.

Utility workers were assessing the damage at the scene. No widespread power outages were reported.

Air Force Veteran Pleads Guilty in Deadly Crash

A 13-year Air Force veteran who was driving under the influence of prescription medication during a deadly crash pleaded guilty in a downtown courtroom Monday.

Soranon Booppanon, 40, was arrested for felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter on Oct. 23, 2013 following a collision in University City, near the UTC mall in La Jolla, that left a 77-year-old man dead.

Four vehicles were involved in the crash, where police said a Volkswagen Golf and an Audi were turning onto La Jolla Village Drive from Genesee Avenue when Booppanon, driving her Prius, ran a red light and hit both cars. She then ran into a Nissan truck.

George Matteson, 77, was the driver of the Golf and died from injuries sustained in the collision.

Booppanon was released from custody a week after her 2013 arrest.

Booppanon's defense attorneys argued she was suffering medical issues stemming from injuries sustained during her time in the Air Force.

She was apparently on her way to the VA hospital at the time of the crash.

Booppanon was facing 15 years in prison, but defense attorney Cole Casey said the plea deal guarantees the prosecution cannot seek and the judge cannot impose anything more than seven years.

Sentencing is scheduled for Apr. 27.

Locals in Point Loma Say "No" to New Homes

0

A dispute over proposed development on a Point Loma hillside will head to the San Diego City Council next week.

A group of Point Loma residents is fighting the addition of three homes to a 1.45 acre estate just blocks from the ocean.

The land, known to locals as Point Loma Summit, was once owned by Joseph E. Jessop.

A founding member of the San Diego Maritime Museum, Jessop helped bring the Star of India to San Diego.

He built a home on La Crescentia Drive in 1929 and lived there until his death in 1996.

Now, the owners of the property want to keep Jessop’s original home and add three others to the land.

The San Diego Planning Commission approved the proposal in June 2014.

However, a neighborhood group known as Preserve Point Loma is concerned the development goes against city code and doesn't follow proper safety regulations.

Group co-chair Marcie Rothman said they are worried this development will set a new standard for future projects that won't have to meet city building regulations.

Rothman said the cliff is made of sandstone which could raise safety concerns during rainy weather. She also said there is no fire access to all homes using the existing driveway on the property.

The proposal approved by the planning commission requires three water stand pipes be added to the property to allow connections for firefighters when necessary.

There are other requirements involving off-street parking, solar energy and building height.

Preserve Point Loma has 700 signatures of people against the development, Rothman said.

City Councilmembers will consider both sides when they meet Feb. 9 at 2 p.m.

Woman Suffers Major Trauma After Sunset Cliffs Fall

A woman suffered major trauma after she fell from a ledge at Sunset Cliffs.

Shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and the San Diego Lifeguards responded to a report of a woman who had fallen from the cliffs.

A 43-year-old female lost consciousness and suffered neck and back injuries, firefighter Matt Nilsen said.

A helicopter lowered water personnel 30 to 40 feet down to help rescue the woman. They put her on a backboard and extracted her. She was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center.

Firefighters said the woman suffered major trauma but was able to talk to first responders, though she did not remember how she had fallen from the cliffs.

Residents of the area said the area needed better warning signs.

“There need to be barriers and warnings, specific statistics that say so many people per week go off, so many have died and so many are injured for life,” said Vicki Rydell, a neighbor that lived nearby.

There is no word on her condition and fire responders could not say if drugs or alcohol were involved.
