Man Hit Girlfriend with Truck: Cops

0

A New Jersey man who allegedly choked his girlfriend before striking her with his pick-up truck, pinning her between the vehicle and a gas pump was arrested Sunday night.

Police charged James Crudup, 44, of Toms River, with attempted murder after he brutally attacked his 35-year-old girlfriend at a Hess Gas station early Sunday morning, police said. Crudup was apprehended around 7 p.m.

Crudup and the woman pulled into the gas station on Route 37 East in Toms River around 12:30 a.m., exited the pick-up truck and began arguing, authorities said.

The verbal fight escalated to physical violence within moments as the man threw his girlfriend to the ground and began choking her, officials said.

The woman was able to free herself and began running toward the gas pumps as he returned to his truck and began driving towards her, investigators said.

A station attendant tried to push the woman out of the way, but it was too late.

Crudup struck his girlfriend, pinning her between his truck's bumper and the gas pump, before backing up and driving at her for a second time, running over her legs as she remained on the ground, police said.

Her boyfriend backed up and struck her with his truck a third time, before speeding away from the scene, authorities said. The suspect was last seen heading west on Route 37, police said.

Medics rushed the woman to Jersey Shore Medical Center. Officials said her injuries appear to be non-life threatening.

Officials have not yet revealed Crudup's bail information.

Freeway Takeover Stymied in Street Racing Crackdown: CHP

An early-morning, "Fast and Furious"-style highway takeover in South Los Angeles was stymied Sunday by a multi-agency street racing crackdown, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol and two other agencies shut the eastbound 105 for over an hour at Crenshaw Boulevard after people who posted to social media planned to do the same thing, a CHP spokesman said.

Law enforcement agents arrested  several people, who were booked on charges of DUIs, stolen firearms and vehicles and narcotics possession in the bid to squash the night's illegal street racing, the spokesman said.

"Crimes and acts of violence have been committed against innocent motorists and vehicles attempting to pass through these illegal events, as well as random acts of vandalism by spectators," CHP spokesman Tony Polizzi said.

The Los Angeles Police Department and LA County Sheriff's Department took part in the sweep, which resulted in several high-speed chases, Polizzi said.

A group of between 50 and 60 cars were gathered at a bus parking lot near the 105 Freeway and Crenshaw at around 3 a.m., the CHP said. Videos posted to social media showed cars doing tricks at the intersection.

An Instagram video posted by @alexander_sangria showed a man saying that parking lot was the meeting point for people "planning to take over the 105 Freeway." The user's page was later deleted.

The CHP isssed a Sig Alert at about 3:30 a.m. that it shut down the eastbound freeway. Footage of the freeway showed it backed up as patrolmen questioned people on the side of the highway, frisking some and searching cars.

Polizzi said several people were arrested, but didn't give an exact number. No one was injured in the sweep, he said.

It was reopened just before 5 a.m., the CHP said.

More information will be released at a Monday morning press conference, Polizzi said.

Tow Truck Driver Hit While Responding to Crash

A tow truck driver was seriously injured responding to an accident early Sunday morning in Encinitas.

Officers took one man into custody and are searching for another suspect.

A black Mustang collided with another car around 2 a.m. on northbound Interstate 5, just north of Santa Fe Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.

No one was injured in the crash, but CHP says the Mustang driver ran away and is still on the loose.

“A lot of times people who drive will run away from the scene because they don't wish to be arrested for driving under the influence. We don't know for sure, but that’s a possibility,” said CHP Sgt. Brad Denham.

A tow truck from RoadOne Towing responded when a second accident happened.

“A separate vehicle being driven by a male subsequently collided into the tow driver as he was attempting to get the vehicle up on the back of the tow truck,” Denham said.

CHP says the tow truck driver was thrown from the shoulder onto the freeway. Paramedics rushed him to Scripps La Jolla with serious injuries, possibly several broken bones.

The man who hit the tow truck driver was taken away in handcuffs. He will be charged with felony DUI causing injury.

Denham says CHP is out in full force this holiday season, so it could have easily been one of their officers injured.

“Unfortunately, we were unable to catch this DUI driver prior to this collision,” he said.

Chargers Fall to Chiefs, Miss Playoffs

Needing only a win to get in the postseason, the Chargers were unable to mount any sort of offense in a 19-7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

it means they will miss the playoffs as they finish with a 9-7 record.

The Bolts had plenty of opportunities to get back in the game. They had a first-and-goal inside the Chiefs 5 midway through the fourth quarter, but were unable to score. Then they were stopped on fourth-and-1 on their next possession in Chiefs territory.

Branden Oliver scored the lone Chargers touchdown, a 1-yard run set up by Eddie Royal's 44-yard reception from Philip Rivers in the second quarter.

Oliver led the team with 71 yards on 14 carries. Royal had four catches for 95 yards.

Rivers completed 20 of 33 passes for 291 yards and a pair of interception, including one in the end zone on the last play of the game.

The loss, coupled with a Baltimore win over the Cleveland Browns, means the Ravens claim the final playoff spot in the AFC.

Tight end Travis Kelce had 84 receiving yards and a touchdown for the Chiefs (9-7), who needed a win and losses from the Ravens and Houston Texans to get in the postseason.

A 10-year-old boy who was walking to a friend's home for a sleepover was struck and killed by a police cruiser Sunday night in Franklin Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey.

The child's family told NBC10 the boy was walking with two of his friends on Delsea Drive and Paul Street. The boy was crossing the street to attend a sleepover when he was suddenly struck by a Franklin Township Police cruiser passing by. Police told NBC10 the officer was responding to a call.

The boy later died from his injuries. The boy's two friends were not hurt and are currently being interviewed by detectives.

Family members and a witness claimed the police cruiser was traveling fast and did not have on any lights or a siren at the time of the accident. Investigators did not confirm nor deny that the use of the vehicle's lights and siren.

Window Washer's Family Raises $70K

The family of a window washer who fell 11 stories from the top of a San Francisco building has raised more than $70,000 in just 17 days, nearly four times what they had hoped.

"I just wanted to thank everyone from the bottom of our hears on behalf of my father," 19-year-old Monica Perez wrote on the family's fundraising page for her father, Pedro Perez, 58, of San Leandro. "It means a lot to us to know that we're not alone and that people are willing to give us what little they may have just to help us in this time of need."

As of Monday morning, a total of 1,155 people had raised $72,670, far surpassing the $20,000 goal the family had set.

Three days before Christmas, Perez's family spoke publicly for the first time since Perez fell 130 feet from the top of the Sterling Bank and Trust Building on Montgomery Street on Nov. 21, landing on a Toyota Camry. Ever since the fall, money has been tight for his wife and three daughters as Perez is the main breadwinner of the family.

While Perez has moved out of San Francisco General Hospital to a rehab in Pleasanton, he is still not able to walk after multiple surgeries, his family said. They said he also suffered extensive brain trauma.

Perez and his co-worker, who work for Century Window Cleaning in Concord, were helping other workers on a window washing scaffold by moving power cords on the roof, Cal-OSHA spokesman Peter Melton said. He fell, Melton said, while handling the power cords near the edge of the roof.

The "investigation is ongoing" and no fines have been issued at this point.

And while he has insurance, Perez's lost income from working is a huge blow. His wife, Marciela Perez, works in a plastics factory, and his daughter quit her college studies to become a home care worker to help support the family. The couple's other daughters, ages 16 and 11, are still in school.

Monica Perez said the money means she'll be able to go back to school in the summer.

Not only that, she wrote,"It also gives my father peace of mind to know that we won't have to struggle any longer with the bills and that we are going to be OK."

One person is dead and another is critically injured after a helicopter crashed Monday morning near Lantana Airport in Palm Beach County.

The crash happened just north of the airport around 10:30 a.m., according to NBC affiliate WPTV. Officials say the chopper crashed to the ground just over the perimeter fence into John Prince Park.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the downed helicopter was a Robinson R22.

Jerry Campbell was walking in the park when he saw it fly above. Seconds later, he heard a crash.

"I just thought it was weird, I heard the noise, the trees, and thought about it for a couple of seconds, then thought 'Probably not,'" Campbell recalled. "Then I thought, 'There is nothing around these trees that could make that noise.'"

The survivor in the crash was transported to a nearby hospital, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.

Police Supporters Rally in Miami

More than a thousand people are expected to gather in downtown Miami Monday evening in a show of support for law enforcement officers.

Rally organizers say they are holding the event to support police officers across the country. Many officers themselves are expected to attend the gathering in Bayfront Park.

"I just want to show that our job is important," said Miami Police Det. Jerry Dellamico. "We do this because we care and because we love our job. I just want to show support for my brothers in this and across the country."

The rally is part of a nation-wide movement calling for an end to violence toward police. Supporters were asked to show up wearing blue shirts or NYPD shirts, after two officers in New York were gunned down in their patrol car last week.

After the rally, officers will light blue candles in white bags to line the street in honor of the more than 750 officers in Florida who have been killed in the line of duty.

Target Promises No Starbucks at South Park Store

0
0

Responding to concerns among residents about aesthetics and potential harm to local businesses, Target Corp., officials said the retailer’s upcoming TargetExpress store in San Diego’s South Park neighborhood will not have a Starbucks Coffee café or kiosk.

Target previously announced a July 2015 opening for its small-format store at the northeast corner of Grape and Fern streets. The Minneapolis-based retailer said in a statement that the store will offer a “wider assortment” of basic hardware supplies, “as we have heard from local residents that this is an unmet need.”

Target spokeswoman Kristen Emmons said the company will commission a local artist to create artwork inside the store, to fit in with the aesthetics of the South Park community. The store will offer organic produce sourced from California when possible.

“As we’ve mentioned before, we will not feature a Starbucks in this TargetExpress store because we know the local coffee cart is a popular neighborhood fixture and a gathering place for residents,” Emmons said.

The South Park location is in early planning stages, and the retailer plans no architectural or structural changes to the exterior of the existing building. Interior plans include removing existing window blinds to “play up the building’s natural light.”

To promote an open store environment that features exposed wooden beams, there will be no interior signs hanging from the ceiling, Emmons said. The retailer “will continue to apply learnings from the community” after the store opens.

The South Park location will be Target’s sixth U.S. store and first in the local region to feature a smaller format, at approximately 19,000 square feet – about 14 percent of a typically sized general-merchandise Target, averaging 135,000 square feet, officials said.

Target Corp. (NYSE: TGT) currently operates 15 stores in San Diego County.

Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a man detained by San Diego police officers on Sunday morning.

The man was questioned by officers after he was spotted at the USA gas station, 2205 Morena Boulevard, appearing to be intoxicated with open alcohol containers in his vehicle’s center console area, according to a news release from the San Diego Police Department.

Officers questioning the driver at about 10:30 a.m. smelled alcohol on his breath and detained him outside the vehicle for questioning, police said.

After about three minutes, the driver began to vomit and have trouble breathing, police said.

Officers performed first aid on the man and requested help from medics. However, he was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital, where he died a short time later, the news release said.

Homicide detectives were called in and will conduct an investigation and the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death.

The man’s name has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police department’s homicide unit at 619-531-2293.

Pedestrian Killed in Chain-Reaction Crash Near Pendleton

A pedestrian was struck and killed late Sunday night near Camp Pendleton, backing up traffic on southbound Interstate 5 for miles.

The California Highway Patrol initially responded to a report of a disabled vehicle, according to CHP Acting Sgt. Shawn Synder, but what officers discovered was a body in the freeway near the Aliso Creek rest area.

CHP says the victim, a 24-year-old man from West Hollywood, was trying to cross the interstate. He was struck by a white pickup truck and then an SUV. The SUV spun out of control and hit three other cars. CHP believes more vehicles continued to run over the man.

Officers are now looking for a white mid-sized two-door pickup truck that may have fled the scene.

“There is some indication one vehicle, possibly the initial vehicle that struck the pedestrian, did not stop,” Synder said.

So far, no arrests have been made.

At one point, three of four lanes of the freeway were closed, bringing traffic to a crawl.

Authorities Investigate 3 Deadly Hit-and-Run Crashes

Police are investigating three separate fatal hit-and-run crashes on Sunday night -- one in National City, another in City Heights and a third north of Oceanside.

The first hit and run happened at about 6:30 p.m. on Plaza Boulevard near Highland Avenue in National City. Officers said a white, older model pickup truck hit a pedestrian walking in the crosswalk and then took off. The victim, 75-year-old Armando Guerrero, died at the scene.

Police are asking the public to be on the lookout for the truck, which they believe is a Nissan or Toyota and may have front-end damage on the passenger side.

Around the same time, police said a 23-year-old man standing on a center divide in City Heights was struck and killed by a dark colored Lincoln Navigator. The accident happened near 52nd Street and University Avenue, right outside San Diego Rescue Mission.

The pedestrian, who has not been identified, also died at the scene, police said.

Then near Camp Pendleton, a 24-year-old West Hollywood man was struck by more than one vehicle while trying to run across Interstate 5, causing a vehicle pile-up.

Authorities said around 11:20 p.m Sunday, a mid-size pickup truck took off after striking the man. When the victim tried to get up, he was hit by an SUV, which lost control and hit three other cars.

The white, two-door pickup that fled the scene is still being sought and no arrests have been made as of Monday night.

Gabriel Wico works in National City near where the first pedestrian was hit. He says something needs to be done about the dangerous intersection, where a fading white crosswalk is the only protection.

"It's one of the busiest streets in National City," Wico said. "There's no stop lights or any lights for a crosswalk."

City capital improvement records show no new safety initiatives planned to improve the now-deadly stretch of Plaza Boulevard and a call to the city turned up empty, as the offices are closed through the first of the year.

9-Hour Standoff Ends in Arson Suspect's Arrest

An arson suspect surrendered to SWAT officers early Monday morning, ending a nine-hour standoff in City Heights.

The suspect, identified as Vidal Webb, 41, had barricaded himself in the garage of a friend’s house in the 3800 block of Chamoune Avenue.

He was wanted by San Diego County sheriff’s deputies in connection to an arson in Poway on Sunday morning.

Deputies said they were called to the house fire in Poway just after 5 a.m. in the 13800 block of Belvedere Drive. They said a woman at the resident was reported to be on fire and other residents were trying to treat her by dumping water on her.

Everyone else inside the house escaped safely, and the woman was rushed to UCSD Medical Center’s burn unit. At last check, she was in critical condition.

“To sustain burns like that and have family and friends there to witness something like that, it’s pretty traumatic," said Sgt. Chad Boudreau with the sheriff's department.

Meanwhile, the woman’s boyfriend Webb – suspected of arson – left the house before deputies arrived, triggering a search for him all day Sunday, deputies said.

An anonymous tip led deputies to a home in City Heights, where Webb was holed up and refused to come out upon the request of deputies.

At about midnight, the suspect came out of the garage with his hands up, surrendering to deputies who had been negotiating with him for three hours.

Webb was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of arson causing great bodily injury and attempted murder. He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday.

Officials say Webb may have intentionally set the victim on fire after a days-long argument. The couple has known each other for 25 years, according to deputies.

Webb has no prior record of domestic violence. However, court documents show he was charged with DUI and hit-and-run in 2012. His blood alcohol level was .29, almost four times the legal limit.

Calif. Senator Introduces Ignition Interlock Bill

0
0

It’s estimated drunk drivers kill more than 1,000 Californians and injure more than 20,000 each year.

On Monday morning, State Senator Jerry Hill (D-San Mateo), announced he is introducing legislation that would require everyone convicted of driving under the influence to install an "Ignition Interlock Device," or IID, on his or her vehicle. The senator's best friend was killed in a drunk driving accident 30 years ago.

The car engine will only start after the driver blows into the ignition device and the blood alcohol level is within the pre-set limit.

Hill said California is playing catchup – 24 states already have similar laws in place. The legislation would expand a pilot program in effect in four California counties: Alameda, Tulare, Sacramento and Los Angeles, which all require convicted drunk drivers to install the devices.

Women with Mothers Against Drunk Driving  stood alongside law enforcement officials behind Hill at the Courthouse Plaza in Redwood City Monday morning. MADD launched a campaign in 2006 to eliminate drunk driving that includes calling on states to require the ignition lock installations, citing a statistic that 50- to 70-percent of convicted DUI offenders continue to drive without a license.

Under Hill’s proposed bill, drivers would have to install and use an IID depending on the number of DUI convictions:

  • 1st DUI offense: 6 months in jail
  • 2nd DUI offense: 1 year in prison
  • 3rd DUI offense: 2 years in prison
  • 4th DUI offense: 3 years in prison

Right now, only 20 percent of people convicted of DUIs opt to install an ignition lock versus driving with a restricted license, Hill's office said. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the locks are very effective in cutting the recidivism rate of drunk driving offenses by 67 percent.

New Year's Eve Storm to Pack a Punch

0
0

San Diego prides itself on not really having winters. But starting Tuesday afternoon, it will legitimately feel like winter around here.

A winter storm warning is in effect for San Diego County between 4 p.m. Tuesday and 4 p.m. Wednesday, as forecasters are predicting snow levels to drop to 2,000 feet.

Between six and 12 inches of snow is expected to fall in the San Diego County mountains, according to the National Weather Service.

The snow will be met by high winds, with gusts predicted to reach 50 mph through the mountain passes.

For those of us living closer to sea level, it will still be pretty cold and rainy.

The rain is expected to start Tuesday and last through New Year’s Eve, forecasters say. The daytime temperature is only expected to hit 55 on Wednesday, with a nighttime low of 40 predicted on San Diego’s coastline.

The colder temperatures are expected to last through Friday, though the rain should subside on New Year’s Day, according to the National Weather Service.

2 Ministers Shot at in Church Parking Lot

Two ministers were shot at while sitting in a car in their church’s parking lot late Sunday night in Grant Hill.

San Diego police say the two ministers from the Greater Apostolic Faith Temple Church were in a car talking around 9:30 p.m. when a man walked up to the passenger side and starting shooting into the car.

The suspect fired four rounds into the window and then ran from the parking lot.

One of the bullets grazed the passenger's chest and when into his arm. Churchgoers have identified the victim as Pastor Dwayne Sheperd. Sheperd was taken to the hospital but has since been released.

The other minister in the car wasn't hit.

The church community was shocked to hear the news.

“Upset. Angry. I'm hoping and praying they find out who did it,” said Deacon Charles Edmundson.

Richard Petruska has lived next to the church for two years. He says he has never heard gunshots in the neighborhood before Sunday night.

“Why would anybody shoot at two men of the Lord? I don’t understand that at all. I’ve seen the church always give out food donations and stuff like that. It seems like they’re a pretty good church,” Petruska said.

Police found the suspect's gun within the crime scene but wouldn't give specifics as to where.

Officers were still looking for the shooter Monday afternoon. That suspect is described as an African American man in his 20s, around 5-foot-10 and 160 pounds with a thin build, wearing black clothing and a black baseball cap.

Carlsbad Jogger Hit and Killed by SUV

A makeshift memorial on Monday marked the place where a 51-year-old woman was hit and killed by a SUV on Sunday morning as she was jogging with her sister.

Nicole Lynch of Carlsbad was hit on Carlsbad Boulevard just north of Tamarack Avenue just after 7 a.m. A 52-year-old man driving a 1998 Ford Expedition collided with Lynch when he suddenly swerved onto the sidewalk for an unknown reason, Carlsbad police said.

The driver, whose name has not been released, was heading north on Carlsbad Boulevard when he struck the woman, who was jogging north on the east sidewalk, police said.

Traffic detectives are investigating what caused the crash. They say alcohol or drugs are not believed to be involved in the collision.

One nearby resident, Captain Shawn, said he woke to a loud scream and went outside to check out the commotion. He said he believed the woman was hit from behind.

Shawn said that stretch of road is dangerous and not the first time someone's been hit.

“We have a lot of patrols that sit down toward the lagoon area, but we don’t really have too much patrolling going on right here," he said. "The crosswalks they put in, to me, are a waste of money."

"We jaywalk," he added. "It's safer."

While police have not revealed any possible factors in the crash, Shawn suspects the driver was distracted.
