Three people are hospitalized in New York City with injuries from a lightning strike as heavy thunderstorms swept the tri-state, authorities say.

The men were hurt at Orchard Beach on Pelham Bay in the Bronx at about 5 p.m., and were being treated at Jacobi Medical Center, according to the FDNY. They did not appear to be seriously injured or physically burned.

Telemundo identifies two of the victims as a father and son, 49 and 19 years old, who sought shelter under a tree during the storm. A friend of the family told the news station that the lightning hit the tree, then sent the men flying at least 10 feet.

The friend showed the station photos of the victims' clothing that appeared to be shredded in parts from the lightning strike.

bronx lightning strike, lightning strike nyc, lightning strike nyc beach, lightning strike orchard beach, severe thunderstorm nyc new jersey, electric zoo canceled, airport delays nyc nj, us open suspended,

Visitors at Orchard Beach said they weren't seriously concerned about the rain until they heard the thunder.

"That crack of thunder and lightning came, and that's when everybody started to run away," said Cheryl Greenidge.

Edgar Ayalla said he saw lightning hit either the beach or the water "like an explosion," and that debris was sent flying from that lightning strike.

Elsewhere in the city, torrential rain, thunder and lightning interrupted Labor Day weekend celebrations, halted play at the U.S. Open tennis tournament in Queens and forced the early end to the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island.

Traffic crawled on the Garden State Parkway in East Orange, where roads were flooded and emergency responders had to attend to a stranded driver, a traffic camera showed.

Flooding on the Cross Bronx Expressway also caused long delays onto the George Washington Bridge.

Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark airports all reported long delays as a result of the storm.

Another round of thunderstorms is expected in the area by Monday. Labor Day will be otherwise hot and humid.

The last area thunderstorm broke records on Long Island, where the town of Islip saw more than 13 inches of rain fall in a matter of hours on Aug. 14.

A Pompano Beach man has been charged with second-degree murder after stabbing his roommate to death Saturday night, police said.

Broward Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a disturbance call at 3208 Marine Drive just after 9 p.m. Deputies said 22-year-old Samuel Dulavoix was covered in blood when he answered the door. Officers spotted a pile of bloody blankets on top of a body.

BSO has identified the victim as 39-year-old Rahmil Alexander. Dulavoix told homicide investigators that he and Alexander had been living together for about a year. He said they argued over money when Dulavoix stabbed the victim more than 25 times, police said. He later attempted to clean up the scene and conceal the body.

The Broward County Medical Examiner ruled the case a homicide at the scene and said Alexander died of multiple stab wounds.

Dulavoix was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment to superficial cuts on his hands before being released to authorities. He is being held without bond and faces a charge of second-degree murder. It is unknown if Dulavoix has an attorney.

Wife of Marine Killed in Hit And Run Calls For Justice

A grieving wife is calling for justice after losing her Marine sergeant husband in a hit and run crash in Oceanside.

Friends and family traveled to Murrieta early Sunday to hold a fundraiser in honor of 22-year-old Brandon Bizzarro.

Investigators say Bizzarro died when he was hit by a man driving a rented cargo van last Thursday.

If there's anything friends will remember most about Brandon Bizzarro, it would be his love of the Marine Corps and motorcycles.

“It would always be me and him riding on the bikes or whatever, enjoying it,” said Bizzarro’s best friend Shawn Segal. “Now, it's going to be a lot strange, I guess you can say that every time I go out now, I know he's not going to be riding out with me.”

Bizzarro was part of the Sinland Motorcycle Club. He was riding his bike to base when police say Ezequiel Garcia made an illegal U-Turn in front of him.

“I didn't find out Brandon had died until 7 o clock at night,” said Bizzarro’s wife Tamara Graham. “Brandon died at 16:39, which is 4:39, and my work is eight minutes away from the hospital. I was there and no one told me. I could've been there before he died.”

Police say Garcia was driving a rented box truck on an expired license and fled the scene.

“I want justice,” Graham said. “I want him to be punished for what he did."

Just days after the crash, Bizzarrro's motorcycle club and Marine brothers decided to wash cars and bikes in his memory to help his wife and his parents back home in Pennsylvania.

“They knew what kind of person he was,” said Bizzarro’s father, Joe, over the phone. "It says a lot about the people that surrounded him. There's a lot of people who wouldn't do something like that. I guess to us, they're family."

The Sinland Motorcycle Club plans to hold memorial ride in Bizzarro's honor in October. A fundraising website has been set up to raise money for his family.

Lights Turn on in Chicano Park

Barrio Logan residents gathered Saturday to celebrating the lighting of Chicano Park.

The park tucked underneath the San Diego Bay Bridge along Interstate 5 recently designated as an historic place, will now be lighted at night.

Victor Ochoa with the Barrio Art Association says the new lights will make the park more family friendly.

“We want to show a little bit of enlightenment that we are working professionally to make this place look more for la familia,” Ochoa said.

In March 2013, the park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places mainly because of the murals that were created at a time when the Chicano community was fighting for civil rights

The community is battling negative stereotypes, Ochoa said.

“This is something we've been dealing with for centuries. But we want to show a little bit of enlightenment,” he said.

More improvements are in the works. The community is working to add new restrooms to the park and a tiny tots play area.

I think it also shows the art can be one of those solutions, or part of the solution of some of those issues that we've got to be dealing with."

Flooding Closes Balboa Park Bridge

A water main break closed one of Balboa Park’s main thoroughfares during the busy Labor Day weekend.

The Cabrillo Bridge was closed for about 12 hours as crews repaired an air valve in El Prado, according the City of San Diego Public Utilities Department. The corroded air valve broke around 5 a.m. Sunday, flooding the iconic bridge with water.

“A 36-inch line is a very big pipeline, and it’s a lot of pressure. That’s why there was so much water that came out,” said Arian Collins, Supervising Public Information Officer with the utilities department.

At this point, officials don’t know how many gallons of water were lost. Nowhere in the park lost water, but some areas experienced low water pressure, Collins said.

The Cabrillo Bridge sidewalks remained open for pedestrians. Dogs and kids were spotted playing in the water.

The road reopened around 6 p.m. Sunday.

A man tried to assault a woman in a busy shopping area in University City, according to San Diego police.

Around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, a 21-year-old woman was walking in the 4500 block of La Jolla Village Drive, across the street from the Westfield UTC mall. That’s when a man grabbed her and pulled her into the bushes, police say.

Police say witnesses heard the woman’s screams and chased away the suspect before he was able to assault her.

Carmello Baviera, manager of P.F. Chang’s on La Jolla Village Drive, says he was surprised to hear about the attack because there are a lot of people walking in the area that time of night.

“We always tell our employees just to be safe to walk with somebody, but I’ve never heard of seen anyone being assaulted,” Baviera said.

The suspect had a mustache and was wearing a long sleeve shirt with black and white sleeves, black pants and a black baseball cap. Anyone with information should call the San Diego Police Department.

Market Basket CEO Visits Workers

Market Basket's newly reinstated CEO Arthur T. Demoulas told workers at a Chelsea, Massachusetts, supermarket that he is "forever grateful" Monday, days after he returned to helm the grocery chain following months of worker protests and boycotts triggered by his June ouster.

The man better known to supporters as Artie T. gave workers in Chelsea a lift as they restocked the store. He said the priority now, days after his $1.5 billion deal to buy the company, is to restore stores to customers' expectations, after months hampered by walkouts and empty shelves.

Demoulas reiterated his gratitude to the workers whose pressure helped return him to the helm, and said he is able to connect with his staff of 25,000 through hands-on experience and working together.

"We try to be good to one another and help each other out," Demoulas told workers. "We certainly saw that in the past six or seven weeks.

"I'll be forever grateful," he added.

Demoulas said his first order of business would be to say "thank you, millions of times over."

The turmoil that has roiled Market Basket all summer culminated late last week in Demoulas' deal to buy a majority stake in the company and in his return as CEO, to roars of support from the workers whose intense pressure, protests and walkouts had helped ensure it.

"I love you all," the told them Friday, just after the board controlled by a rival cousin accepted his $1.5 billion bid for a majority stake Thursday night.

Arthur T. had been ousted as CEO back in June by allies of his rival cousin Arthur S. Demoulas, sparking the two-month dispute, in which employee protests and customer boycotts left many stores and shelves empty.

When news broke that he had regained control of the company, hundreds of supporters gathered Friday at company headquarters in Tewksbury, where he spoke to them.

"I've always believed that we are born into this world at a certain time and a certain place to be with certain people for a reason and a purpose," he told the crowd there. "Everyone has a destiny, and because of you, I stand here with a renewed vigor and a sense of purpose."

The restoration of some Market Basket stores could take several weeks, Arthur T. told reporters Friday, but employees have been working around the clock since his reinstatement to restock empty shelves and reestablish ties with vendors.

Customers were found last week ready to shop once again.

“People are bringing in champagne bottles. Customers are bringing in balloons and donuts and food. It’s great. It's a great feeling,” Tewksbury store manager Mike Riley said.

"It's just a good feeling," said customer Cindy Stamp, whose son works in a Market Basket warehouse. "It's about food, but it's really not. It's about what he does for all our children and people that need jobs. I mean, that to me is the biggest. My son makes a living. Do you believe that? A living off of working in a warehouse. Who can say that?"

Correction: In an earlier report, NECN stated that the FAA had confirmed the plane's tail number. This information actually came from NTSB.

A plane has crashed in North Hampton, New Hampshire, killing the pilot and his passenger. Officials say the plane stopped only to refuel. It had taken off originally from a private airstrip in Kingston, New Hampshire.

Police in Kingston confirm that David Ingalls, a resident of that town, was operating the plane when it crashed at Hampton Airfield around 10:50 a.m. Ingalls was an Air Force Veteran and retired TWA pilot who for 30 years was on the town of Kingston Conservation Commission.

The Cessna 180 is registered to Ingalls, according to the Federal Aviation Administration's online database.

"When I flew with Dave, he checked that little Cessna over as though it were a 747. He checked every screw on that plane before it went up and I felt very comfortable with him," said Evelyn Nathan, chair of the Kingston Conservation Commission.

Witnesses told officials that the plane was trying to take off. It appeared to be moving normally until the nose of the plane pitched upward. They say the aircraft lost speed and dropped from the sky.

"This was just a transient pilot that came in got gas came back out and had a really, really unfortunate accident. And everyone here is in an absolute state of shock and mourning," said witness and pilot Dana Thurston.

New Hampshire State Police responded to the crash.

The FAA is investigating, and the National Transportation Safety Board is working to determine the cause of the crash. The name of the passenger has not been released.

NECN will have more as this story develops.

He is expected to be arraigned Monday, prosecutors said.

Neighbors said the news has devastated those who knew the family.

"I only heard nice things about Nicholas," said Donna Cioffi. "I used to see him skateboarding up and down Powderhorn Road, like any other teenager would do. I never had any issues with him."

"It's just devastating to a hear a 24-year-old can take his mother's life," she said. "No matter what the situation or circumstance is, you have to believe there's something very wrong behind that. It's very, very unnerving."

Gerry Pearce said the alleged killing was incomprehensible.

"This neighborhood is unbelievably nice, quiet," he said. "You never hear anything like this happen here."

A hiker on Hermit Island in the Potomac River died Sunday after he was pinned under a large boulder, emergency officials said.

Rian Avarham Khalder, 25, had been hiking with his 14-year-old brother along the Potomac on the island near the Angler Inn boat ramp when he began to climb an area of rocks.

Some of the rocks gave way, Khalder fell and a large boulder came down on him, police said.

Gunmen Force Workers Into Fridge

A pair of masked gunmen stormed a Red Lobster in Kendall, Florida, and closed several employees in a restaurant refrigerator before taking off with $500 cash.

Workers at the Red Lobster at 11550 Kendall Drive were closing up the restaurant around just before midnight on Sunday when police say two armed men, their faces covered with either shirts or skullies, walked through the front door.

The men ordered the employees to surrender their cell phones, then pistol-whipped shift manager Edith Olivares, 52, and demanded she open the restaurant's safe, according to police.

The masked men also kicked 24-year-old bartender Leron Reid several times, then forced the employees into the store's refrigerator and made off with the cash, police said.

Once the coast was clear, employees were able to open the refrigerator door and call police.

While Olivares sustained several lacerations to the head, she will recover.

Red Lobster's general manager Neil Anderson said he and his employees are grateful no one was killed in the robbery and called the robbers "cowards."

"They're cowards. It's really cowardly to hit a 52-year-old lady with a pistol," he said. "She's a valued employee. A fantastic employee."

“Our thoughts are with the employees who were impacted by this terrible crime. Their recovery, the safety of our Kendall team and local guests is our No. 1 priority," a Red Lobster spokeswoman said in a statement. "We have taken steps to increase security presence at this location and we are actively partnering with the police on their investigation."

In the meantime, the Kendall Red Lobster is back open for business.

Now police need the public's help in identifying the armed robbers. They are described as one man with a thin build and another with a heavy build, both in their 30s, between 5 feet 8 inches and and 5 feet 10 inches tall.

Anyone with information is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS(8477).

Cousin Charged in Death of Girl, 5

Dallas police have arrested and charged a family member with capital murder in the killing of a young girl found dead inside a vacant apartment Sunday afternoon.

The body of 5-year-old Kathrine Alejandra Gonzalez was discovered inside an empty, ground-floor apartment at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Sontera Palms Apartments in northeast Dallas, police said.

On Monday, police said Gonzalez's cousin, 17-year-old Angel Lizandro Sanches-Zenteno, has been arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with the girl's death.

Gonzalez had been playing outside of her aunt and uncles apartment with her sisters when she disappeared. She, along with her brothers and sisters, were being watched by their aunt and uncle while her parents were at work.

Police said as soon as neighbors in the community realized the girl was missing, many of them were quick to assist in the search for the missing girl — even before police were called at about 11:30 a.m.  After officers arrived, many of the residents allowed officers to search their homes and cars for the missing child.

When police arrived, maintenance workers informed them there were a large number of vacant apartments at Sontera Palms. After obtaining a key, officers began what they described as a systematic search of all vacant units.  Officers eventually discovered the girl’s body inside a unit at the back of the complex, next door to Sanches-Zenteno's apartment.

Police said Monday that the Dallas County medical examiner said preliminary results of the autopsy indicate the girl's cause of death was strangulation.

A witness told police that he saw the girl walking with a person at about noon and that he had seen them together before the girl disappeared. That person in question, along with a number of other people, were taken to Dallas Police Headquarters for questioning.

The investigation into the girl's death is ongoing. The Dallas Police Department asked for anyone with information on this offense to contact detectives at 214-275-1300.

Sanches-Zenteno is being held in the Dallas jail with no bond. Jail records did not list an attorney.

Moments after a car landed in the water near the San Diego Yacht Club, the driver walked away from the vehicle saying he “was going for a swim,” according to a witness.

Harbor Police and San Diego Fire-Rescue responded to Anchorage Lane near Shelter Island Drive around 3 a.m. Monday after someone reported a vehicle submerged in the water.

Skip Rickon was watching “Dateline” on his boat near the San Diego Yacht Club when he felt a big rumble and heard a big splash. He wasn’t prepared for what he saw next.

“That was shocking to watch a car go down like that,” Rickon said.

A vehicle he described as a Lexus SUV was in the water about 15 feet from the dock for only approximately 30 to 45 seconds.

“All of a sudden it just went down,” Rickon said.

Not knowing if there was a driver inside, he considered jumping in but was concerned about getting sucked under by the force of the vehicle being submerged.

“I had heard these things will suck you down if you get in the water next to it,” he explained.

While calling 911 for help, he and his girlfriend spotted the driver walking down the dock. That’s when they say the driver told them he “was going for a swim,” Rickon said.

No damage was done to the ramp or boats docked there.

“He did a good job driving in there without damaging anything,” Rickon said.

Divers went into the vehicle to check for any other victims and found no one inside.

Harbor Police say they are investigating how the car landed in the bay.

Labor Day weekend, the unofficial end of summer, is a busy time for people across the county: students, teachers, administrators and, for the past three days, lifeguards.

Since Saturday morning, roughly 574,000 people visited San Diego city beaches.

Over the weekend, lifeguards dove in to rescue 164 people and gave medical aid to 182 people.

They also tallied up 7,823 prevantative acts, which include telling beachgoers when it's not safe to go into the water.

One of the latest rescues happened around 7:30 p.m. in Oceanside Monday.

A woman saw her husband get pulled out to sea by a rip current near the 1300 block of Carmelo Drive, Oceanside Police say.

Panicked, the woman ran home to call 911.

Police say when the man was pulled from the ocean, he was still conscious. More information should be released Monday night.

For much of Labor Day, lifeguards dealt with a rip current alert until 8 p.m.
