Hundreds Stranded at LAX After Canceled Flight

Hundreds of passengers on a Norwegian Air Shuttle flight were forced to sleep in the baggage claim area of LAX both Wednesday and Thursday night as they waited to board a flight that was delayed multiple times and did not takeoff until Friday afternoon.

Passengers tweeted their frustration and one named Kim called NBC4 to describe what had disgruntled her and many others awaiting the Los Angeles to London flight.

“I feel really terrible. I haven’t been able to shower or do anything,” passenger Susan Short of Bristol, England said.

Flight DY7096 was originally scheduled to take off on Wednesday night, but after four hours of sitting on the tarmac trying to fix a technical issue, the nearly 300 passengers were told to get off the plane, Short said.

“In the end they said they couldn’t do it,” passenger Kevin Webber of Bristol, England said. “They got everybody off the plane and back into the airport to sleep, because there’s no hotels apparently.”

Passengers were told that they could book their own hotels if they wanted to and they would be reimbursed. A few people found a nearby hotel, but most hotels near LAX were full. Those with family and friends in Southern California returned home, while many others didn’t know where to begin.

A Norwegian Air Shuttle passenger sleeps on the floor at LAX July 25, 2014. Hundreds of the airline's passengers have been stranded at the airport for days since the Wednesday cancellation of a flight bound for London.

“Of course we didn’t know what to do. Our phones were dead, we didn’t know where to go, we didn’t know any hotels so we had to spent the night here (at LAX),” Short said.

For Adriana Garcia, 28, of Bell, the delay was putting a damper on her vacation plans before they had even begun. It was her first time flying with Norwegian.

"This is a total learning experience," Garcia said. "They need to improve their professionalism, they need to improve their communication."

Garcia said she and her high school friends have been planning this trip -- a Disney cruise starting in Barcelona -- for more than a year. The group of friends had hoped to arrive in London, then fly into Barcelona a few days early and shake off the jet lag. Now Garcia said she just wants to get to the port before the cruise sets sail Saturday afternoon, UTC.

“Now we’re just going to be jumping into the time change," Garcia said.

The canceled flight was rescheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday night, but was then delayed an hour, Short said. That flight was later canceled due to a computer-related issue, Short said.

Angry passengers were captured on video shouting their concerns at airline employeees Thursday night. "Tensions were running high" and "police were called to the gate" that night, according to passenger Cal Strode.

"At one point other passengers were being more helpful than official (Norwegian Air) staff," Strode said.

Passengers told NBC4 they had to wait an hour to two hours for the bags from baggage claim before they could return to their makeshift beds on the airport floor.

“This is a nightmare,” Short said. “One night was bad enough and the second is terrible.”

Garcia didn't recieve her bags from the airline, and instead slept around her friends to keep her warm, she said.

Webber claimed Friday morning that “nobody” from LAX or Norwegian Air was telling him or the other passengers “anything”.

“All we’re getting is texts from the company and flashes on the poster board, but we don’t believe that anyway,” said Webber.

The flight was then rescheduled to leave 9 a.m. Friday, but was then delayed until 12:30 p.m "due to technical problems and crewrest," Norwegian Air Shuttle tweeted.

At 9:30 a.m. Friday, passengers reported that no one appeared to be working the check-in area.

“We’ve got no real plans, we’re in the hands of the company and the airport,” Webber said Friday morning. “We can’t drive home, it’s too far to England.”

Norwegian Air Shuttle started flying between the United States and Europe on July 3. The self-proclaimed low-cost carrier has been having problems since the initial launch.

“It was cheaper, but I don’t think I’d bother again,” Short said.

Many travelers had been tweeting to the airline to voice their complaints.

Norwegian Air had been responding to passenger tweets, as was seen on their Twitter page

The flight, scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Friday, landed in London at 8:05 a.m. local time Saturday, about an hour after its expected arrival.

"I feel relieved to finally be home in London with a place to sleep other than LAX baggage claim," Strode said.

Strode also said that upon arrival in London, there was no one from Norwegian Air waiting at the gate as was promised to them.

"Norwegian Air lost all credibility amongst passengers after issuing at least 11 different departure times over a three-day period," Strode said. "I didn't believe we were leaving until we were actually in the air, at which point all of the passengers started cheering and applauding."

NBC4 reached out to Norwegian Air for comment, but had not heard back at the time of publication.

Riders had to be escorted off a roller coaster at Disney's California Adventure on Friday after the ride stopped due to a technical problem, a park spokesman said.

The California Screamin' ride stopped at 7:30 p.m. at the Anaheim park, said park spokeswoman Suzi Brown.

It stopped automatically as it’s supposed to in response to a "minor technical matter" involving the ride, Brown said.

Krista Slade was at the park celebrating her 15th birthday.

"I was really high up. I was scared. It was nerve wracking," Slade said.

Guests were escorted off without issue by park employees, used steps in place on the ride’s tracks for walking down.

Passengers on four vehicles were escorted off. The number of riders was unknown.

They were given cold water when they got off and no one seemed upset, Brown said.

The ride was being tested afterwards.

It was expected to resume normal operations Saturday, Brown said.

California Screamin' is the park's fastest ride with a top speed of up to 55 mph.

Slade tweeted "that was the scariest thing ever, but we are alive."

Disneyland offered the riders a guest pass as compensation for the coaster scare.

A mallet-wielding attacker hit a sleeping Long Island man before phoning the victim's father and demanding cash in exchange for not hurting him further, police said Saturday.

The Bohemia resident was asleep at home on Friday evening when a man he knew attacked him with a mallet, injuring his head, police said. He then called the victim's father and threatened to hurt the man more if he didn't receive what police say was "a large amount of cash," according to Suffolk County police.

The father went to an ATM and then delivered the cash, and the victim's mother tried to drive her son to the hospital, police said. Part of the way there, the victim became sick, and his mother pulled over to the side of the road. An ambulance was summoned, and he was brought to the hospital.

A 27-year-old was arrested on charges of burglary and grand larceny, police said. It wasn't immediately clear whether he had a lawyer.

Kids Were Left on Hot School Bus: Officials

Two young children who were reported missing after they failed to come home from summer school were found alone inside a hot school bus at a bus depot in New Jersey, authorities say.

The parents of the developmentally disabled children, ages 7 and 9, contacted Vernon school officials Wednesday afternoon to report their kids were never dropped off at their bus stop, according to Dr. Charles Maranzano Jr., superintendent of Vernon public schools.

The school repeatedly called the bus company, MacNova, but the phone calls went unanswered. The school then contacted police, and officers were dispatched to search for the missing bus and children, said Maranzano.

Shortly afterward, the bus company owner contacted the school and claimed the driver of the missing bus had to leave the bus for an emergency and left the kids under the supervision of an adult neighbor. The driver had left the bus running with air-conditioning on, according to the bus company owner.

The owner went on to tell the school that he was planning to head to where the bus was left running and drive the kids to their destinations, said Maranzano.

The children were ultimately dropped off, but appeared distressed and overheated when they got home, according to Maranzano. Police were called to investigate, and they discovered the bus company owner and the bus driver had lied.

According to Maranzano, there had never been an emergency, and the bus driver instead finished the route normally and left the bus depot with the missing kids still on board.

The children were left alone without air conditioning for up to an hour, according to Maranzano, who called it a "cover-up" and "gross incompetence" on the part of the bus company.

The superintendent said EMS should have been called to the scene immediately due to the hot conditions inside the bus.

The bus company has been fired by the school district. No contact information could be found for MacNova, and Maranzano said he didn't immediately have the phone number for the company.

A young woman who refused to ride in an SUV driven by a drunk friend was fatally struck by his vehicle as he attempted to speak to her on the side of a Long Island road, police said.

Krystal Berkowitz, 21, died early Saturday after she attempted to walk home along Nesconset Highway in Setauket rather than allow her 23-year-old friend to drive her, Suffolk County police said. The driver followed her and tried to pull over to speak with her, but hit her instead, police said.

Officers arriving at the scene found the friend trying to help her. He had called 911 to no avail; Berkowitz was pronounced dead at the scene, Suffolk County police said.

The 23-year-old was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated. It wasn't immediately clear whether he had a lawyer.

Details Emerge in Suit Against CHP

The woman seen on a now-viral video being repeatedly punched by a California Highway Patrol officer said her dress was violently ripped to expose her bare buttocks as she told the officer “I didn’t do anything to you,” according to a federal civil rights lawsuit filed last week and amended Friday.

Marlene Pinnock, 51, said in the lawsuit that she had dealt with the officer in the past, and that he called her by name as she walked in the area of the 10 Freeway west of downtown Los Angeles July 1. When she began to leave the area the lawsuit alleges she was “violently thrown to the ground” by the officer.

“He was bamming me in my temples with all the strength he had,” Pinnock said in the lawsuit. Pinnock said she told the officer, “stop, I didn’t do anything to you.”

CHP Commissioner Joseph Farrow told the Sacramento Bee newspaper last week that "the need for more (training) has been exposed," in reference to the video and how the law enforcement agency deals with the mentally ill.

Pinnock’s attorney, Caree Harper, also alleges that the officer, on a “mission to humiliate her,” violently ripped Pinnock’s dress after she tried pulling it down because she wasn’t wearing underwear.

Farrow said last week that the video only captured part of the altercation, and that one would need to know “what was going on the officer’s mind” at the time of incident.

Investigators with CHP seized medical records for Pinnock last week as she remained hospitalized.

"She suffered a traumatic head injury," Harper said. "How can you give away files about someone injured ... to the very people who beat her?"

Farrow told the Associated Press last week that he couldn't confirm the search warrant.

"I think what they're trying to do is, they don't have a statement from her, and they're trying to find that out," Farrow said. "I don't think the CHP is trying to put her on trial or make it an issue about her. What I'm looking at is entirely about the circumstances, we all saw what happened. Our job is to find out the why and the how."

The officer, whose name has not been released by CHP, was placed on desk duty.

A woman is fighting for her life and a young boy is recovering after a propane tank exploded inside an RV in the Oxford Circle section of Philadelphia.

Police say a 36-year-old woman was cooking inside a moving RV on E. Cheltenham Avenue and Oakland Street Saturday morning around 10:15 a.m.

As she was cooking, the propane tank inside the vehicle exploded, causing a fire.

Responding firefighters managed to put out the blaze. The woman suffered burns to her legs and hands. She was taken to Temple University Hospital where she is currently in critical condition.

Investigators also say a 5-year-old boy suffered minor scrapes on both legs but was not hospitalized.

Two other adults inside the RV were not injured in the explosion.

Girl Watched Cop Shoot Dog: Family

Family members and area residents say a young dog was fatally shot by police in front of a 6-year-old girl Friday afternoon in a Chicago suburb.

The dog’s owners say 1-year-old shepherd-mix Apollo had gotten out of their yard in the 8700 block of Beck Place in southwest suburban Hometown and the family had just returned him to their lawn when police arrived.

“We were in the lawn and the cop already had his gun out,” said owner Nicole Echlin. “I tried to call him in the house and he just stood there staring and I guess he showed his teeth and the cop just shot him, right in front of me and my 6-year-old daughter.”

Echlin said her young daughter “started screaming” after the shooting.

Hometown Police said the incident is under investigation but could not immediately confirm any details. They said further information would be available Monday.

"It would be too early for me to make any statement without reviewing all the facts," Chief Charles Forsyth said in a statement on the Hometown Police Department's Facebook page. "I can assure the people of Hometown that a full investigation of the incident will be conducted."

Witnesses said it didn’t appear that the dog was attacking officers or provoking them before the shooting.

“The dog wasn’t doing anything. I didn’t see it doing anything, it wasn’t barking,” said witness and area resident Nicco Torres. “Then I saw a cop shoot the dog, the dog fell to ground on the lawn. I saw through the window the dog was on the floor shot but the dog was still moving, it was moving its legs like it was trying to run but it was laying down.”

Family said the dog had no history of aggression and did not attempt to attack officers at the scene. They claim they were told by officers that the dog showed its teeth.

“I don’t know why they would pull out a gun they had so many other options,” said Echlin's 23-year-old sister and fellow owner Kristy Scialabba, who works at an animal care center in Chicago. “And to shoot a dog in front of a child that’s going to scare her for the rest of her life.”

Scialabba, who set up a Facebook page titled “Justice for Apollo,” said Apollo was taken by Animal Control to an animal hospital for treatment, but died Saturday morning.

“We’re just completely broken and we really don’t know what to do,” she said. “That was my boy, that was my dog. This is hometown you don’t hear anything like this. Nothing ever happens here.”

PD Tracks Burglars Through App

When a La Mesa man was awakened by burglars in his home, he called 911. The police officers who arrived didn't catch the suspects from the air or the ground but through a common app on many smartphones.

The two suspects broke into a home on McRae Avenue just after midnight Saturday and ran off with the homeowners’ handgun, medication, money and iPhone, according to La Mesa police. .

After a K-9 team and helicopter search could not find the suspects, investigators turned to the Find-My-Phone app. By entering the homeowner’s iPhone information, they were able to trace the suspects to an address in Chula Vista.

Chula Vista police were asked to check the address, but La Mesa PD soon discovered the iPhone was on the move again. This time, back to La Mesa, police said.

Officers tracked the signal to Murray Hill Drive and Yale Avenue where they stopped a dark blue late model BMW and took both men in the car into custody.

Officers say they recovered the stolen items from the car.

Luis Pelayo and Luis Gallardo, both 21 and from San Diego, were booked at the San Diego County Jail on charges of residential burglary, theft of a firarm and possession of a controlled substance.

One person died and two others were injured when a car crashed into the back of a tractor trailer on Interstate 5 near Cardiff-by-the-Sea Saturday.

California Highway Patrol officers said a big rig had stopped along northbound I-5 at the Manchester exit around 2:30 a.m.

The driver told CHP a strap on his vehicle had come undone and he was stopped on the right shoulder attempting to fix it when a 2009 Nissan collided into the back of his truck.

Three women were inside the Nissan, officials said. The driver was killed in the crash and pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers were taken to a nearby hospital with what CHP officers described as moderate injuries.

The truck driver suffered minor injuries.

Man Discovers His Stolen Camera on Craigslist

A man who found his stolen camera listed for sale on Craigslist endeavored to recover it himself this weekend.

La Mesa Police say thieves stole the victim’s camera out of his car in San Diego on Friday.

Not long after, the man saw a listing for it online, contacted the suspects through Craigslist and planned to meet them at Grossmont Center at 2 a.m. Saturday.

However, about 20 minutes before the meet, the victim called La Mesa Police to tell them his plan.

Officers told him it was not safe to meet with the suspects alone and asked him to wait in the area for police to arrive. But other calls took priority, so officers could not meet with him right away, according to the LMPD.

The police department soon got another call from the victim, who told them he had met with the suspects in an effort to buy his camera back.

He claimed the suspects pulled a gun on him and then fled in a beige Ford Explorer.

The victim, who was not injured, decided to follow the suspects’ vehicle. With the help of El Cajon Police, officers tracked the vehicle as it turned from Johnson Avenue in El Cajon onto the Interstate 8 on-ramp.

Police pulled the vehicle over, searched inside and recovered the camera. However, they did not find a gun, and investigators discovered the victim’s allegation that the suspects held him at gunpoint was false.

Three suspects were taken into custody and booked into jail.

Jessica Hart, 31, already had two felony warrants out for her arrest, so police added charges of possession of stolen property and possession of burglary tools.

Joseph Kelly, 19, and Dominic Gress, 25, face the same charges.

For the second time in 24 hours, a jockey was hospitalized and a horse euthanized after a bad fall at the Del Mar race track.

The most recent incident happened around 4 p.m. on the grass during the fifth race of the day.

As the horses neared the finish line, the horse "Lil Swiss Echo" fractured her leg and threw her rider, Drayden Van Dyke, to the ground, according to a spokesperson for the track.

Van Dyke was trodden on by two other horses. He was taken to the hospital for unknown injuries.
Track officials say 5-year-old mare "Lil Swiss Echo" broke her leg so badly that putting her down was the only option.

On Friday, a filly "Yes She's Unusual" was put down after she fractured her leg during the sixth race. Her jockey, Brice Blanc, was taken to the hospital for a potentially broken arm and possible concussion.

Another horse was euthanized on Friday after the seventh race.

The death of "Lil Swiss Echo" makes the fifth horse loss since the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s opening day on July 17.

Heroes Beer Fest Satisfies Comic-Con Drinkers

Even superheroes need a good beer every once in a while.

Heroes, villains and other costumed attendees took a break from Comic-Con – or ignored the convention altogether – to sip some of San Diego’s finest beers at Saturday’s Heroes Brew Craft Beer Festival at Embarcadero Park North.

More than 40 breweries were on hand to give out tastes of their finest concoctions, along with food stands and live music.

“This one’s so cool,” said Green Flash Brewery sales and marketing manager Jordan Arndt. “The fact that we have this spot, and so close to Comic-Con, it’s just a great scene.”

Green Flash was serving a couple of different brews, including a wheat IPA – part of their “hop odyssey” series. Other breweries included Mission Brewery, The Lost Abbey, Ballast Point, Coronado Brewing Co., Pizza Port Brewing Co. and Pacific Beach Alehouse.

The event also featured art and craft vendors like Rudy Pollorena, who started his “beer art” company, Craft Beerd, last year. He travels to beer festivals around the county and state to sell his t-shirts and other beer-themed art.

“This one’s pretty high on my list,” said Pollorena, a former video game designer who used to go to Comic-Con, but now just focuses on the beer. “It’s a good crowd, great costumes and you can’t beat the location.”

The crowd costumes varied from a lot of Superman capes, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and multiple Indiana Jones’s to a woman dressed up as the Kevin Smith character Silent Bob and another person dressed up as Barf the Dog from Spaceballs.

Others were just there for the good beers.

“Comic-Con is just too crazy,” said James Carlock, who didn’t have a costume but was sporting Arrogant Bastard Ale socks. “I like the costumes and to see people, so this is a great way to do that. The beer, too.”

Freeney, Floyd Back at Contact Drills at Practice

Dwight Freeney and Malcom Floyd made welcome returns for the San Diego Chargers on Saturday.

Freeney, an outside linebacker, and Floyd, a wide receiver, missed the majority of last season with injuries.

Their return to contact drills was notable in the first day the Chargers worked in pads.

"It was good and I felt fresh," said Freeney, 34, who was restricted to four games and a half sack last year after tearing a quadriceps muscle.

"I'm just going to let the coaches gauge where I am. I'm trusting them to tell me when they want me to get in and when they need to pull me because I'm chomping at bit and ready to go."

Some wondered if Freeney, who has 108 sacks, would return this year. He was cut by the Indianapolis Colts after the 2012 season, one in which had a career-low five sacks while battling an ankle injury.

"I didn't retire when I was released from Indy because I didn't want it to end that way," Freeney said. "I wanted to end it when I said so, not when those guys said I was done."

But Freeney, who's entering his 13th season, admitted rebounding from the quad injury was challenging.

"It wasn't good," said Freeney, a seven-time Pro Bowler. "When you're older you're thinking, `Well, this could have been my last year. Should I come back and grind through the whole rehabilitation process?'

"But I wanted to go out on my terms. I didn't want to think later, `Shoot, I could have stayed a couple of extra years and got a couple more Super Bowls."'

Floyd returned to physical drills for the first time since spraining his neck after making a reception at Philadelphia on Sept. 15. He participated in the team's offseason workouts, but players don't wear pads then.

"I was glad to be back out with the guys but I treated it just like any other day," Floyd said. "I still feel young."

Floyd didn't avoid contact, blocking defensive backs when the play required it.

"I had to stick my nose up in there a couple of times," Floyd said. "I'm just trying to take care of my teammates. I got some cracks in and that was good for me and good for my teammates."

Selfie May Be Last Pic of Slain Rookie Cop

Marshall Crawford's pursuit of his wife's stolen cell phone sparked a connection he'll never forget.

“She was a gentle person in a rough and tumble business and she handled herself with grace and finesse,” Crawford said.

The Encinitas, California, man was describing the impression Escondido Police Officer Laura Perez made in mere minutes when the two met July 19.

Officer Perez helped retrieve the stolen phone and posed for a selfie Crawford wanted to show his wife who had found her phone.

It might be one of the last images of Officer Perez alive.

Five days after this image was taken, Riverside County homicide investigators found the 25-year-old officer’s body in a storage locker in Moreno.

Murrieta Police had arrested her husband, Freddy Perez-Rodas, and charged him with murder.

“It’s just so painful to see someone that young, that vibrant not be with us and I ache
for her daughter and family,” Crawford said.

His interaction with Officer Perez was so memorable, he said, because of the rookie cop’s enthusiasm and sincerity in solving the crime.

“It's not $10 million in gold and she was just as happy to be returning a cell phone as she would have been returning a bank bag,” he recalls.

Crawford reached out to the Escondido Police Department and shared the image. They, in turn, posted it to their Facebook page to honor Officer Perez.

New on the job, Perez was quickly becoming a leader, Chief Craig Carter said. The department is helping the officer’s family as they plan memorial services in Riverside County. They’re also collecting donations for Perez’s 4-year-old daughter Suzette.

Though a private man, Crawford shared a social media post that he was compelled to write about his meeting with the rookie officer.

It’s a message he now wishes he could have given her face to face.

"She was a shining example of how a police officer should conduct themselves and more importantly, how a human being should conduct themselves. Law enforcement and humanity is less today because of her passing,” he wrote.

Ex-Wrestling Champ Uses Choke Hold on Thief

A one-time wrestling champion, fresh from a visit to San Diego’s Comic-Con, returned home to find his front door open and burglars inside.

Former WWE World Heavy-Weight Champion Bryan Danielson had just gotten back to his Phoenix home after his Comic-Con appearance when he and his wife Brie saw their front door open and then close.

Danielson, who wrestles under the name "Daniel Bryan", just reacted, he told NBC affiliate KPNX.

“That's how most people do, and you'll react how you were programmed to react or how your own individual personality is to react. My individual personality was to go after him," Danielson said.

He acted on instinct and chased down the suspect.

"I put him in a rear naked choke but not to, I didn't want to hurt him, I just wanted to make sure that he was subdued," he said.

The wrestling move used many times in the ring, was used to hold this criminal until police arrived.

Having just moved in ten days before, the Danielson’s didn’t have much in the home.

However there was one sentimental gift.

“My dad had just recently passed away and he got me this bracelet that said 'To the man that you've become and the son you'll always be,'” Danielson said.
