Volunteers in Southern California covered more than 200 square miles of desert over the weekend but reported no sign of Erin Corwin, a missing pregnant Marine wife from Twentynine Palms.

San Bernardino County Sheriff's officials updated the search for Corwin Monday, reporting that more than 60 people were involved including search and rescue teams from their department, Los Angeles County and Kern County.

Corwin, 19, was last seen June 28 when she left her home on the Marine Corps base in Twentynine Palms.

She was was reportedly going to visit Joshua Tree National Park.

Her husband Jon didn’t report her missing until the next morning, but officials told KMIR he believed he had to wait 24 hours to report a missing person. Officials said there was no evidence of foul play.

Corwin's blue 2013 Toyota Corolla was found in Twentynine Palms near base two days after her disappearance.

Corwin is described as 5-foot-2 and 120 pounds with light brown hair and blue eyes. She is three months pregnant.

The Tennessee native was preparing to visit San Diego with her mother and had bought tickets to SeaWorld and the San Diego Zoo, according to the Praying for Erin Corwin Facebook page.

Teen Pilot Finishes Record Worldwide Flight in SD

A determined 19-year-old pilot put wheels down in San Diego Monday night and landed in the record books as he completed a 29,000-mile solo flight around the world – becoming the youngest person to achieve that feat.

"I guess it's good to be back," said Matt Guthmiller, a man of few words, as welcomers called for a speech.

Just over one month ago, Guthmiller took off from Gillespie Field in El Cajon, California, on his way to circumnavigate the globe.

Flying in a 1981 Beechcraft A36 Bonanza he leased, Guthmiller’s journey led him through Rome, Cairo, Abu Dhabi and other exotic locales with nothing but his thoughts to keep him company.

Now, with 14 different countries and five continents beneath his seat belt, the MIT student has fulfilled a passion he’s harbored his childhood.

Each part of the trip lasted an average of eight hours, but he wrapped up his longest leg Monday as he traveled 14.4 hours from Honolulu, Hawaii, and El Cajon. He reached Gillespie Field around 8:45 p.m.

One useful tool his family is sure to be thankful for: a flight tracker, where anyone can watch his progress online.

With this goal complete, Guthmiller should break the Guinness World Record for the youngest person to circumnavigate the world by aircraft solo. The person who formally held that record was 21-year-old Jack Wiegand, who finished his 24,000-mile trip in Fresno, Calif. last year.

But his trip had a dual purpose. Guthmiller also set out to raise money for Code.org, a nonprofit that introduces computer science in more schools, by offering ad space on his plane, clothes and website.

However his journey does not stop in San Diego. According to his website, the young pilot will be doing a bit more touring around Las Vegas and Seattle before heading back to his hometown of Abberdeen, South Dakota.

Cops Shoot, Kill Man Armed With Machete

A man armed with a machete was shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting in City Heights Sunday.

Neighbors heard gun shots around 10:20 p.m. near the home on Menlo Avenue near Landis Street.

One person thought the noise was leftover fireworks from the Fourth of July but realized in the morning when he saw caution tape outside his window that something bad had happened

A man inside the home was threatening to kill his family members with a knife and a stick, officials said.

The 21-year-old resident made threats to kill police officers, investigators told NBC 7. Family members have identified him as Ja Ma Lo Day.

When the man swung the machete at an officer, two officers opened fire and struck the suspect several times killing him.

A police dog named Nando required stitches from a machete wound but was expected to survive. As of 10 a.m., the K-9 was out of surgery and resting at home, officials said.

The 8-year-old German Shepherd was set to retire this month, officials said.

Day came to the U.S. six years ago as a refugee from Burma, his family told NBC 7.

His brother said Day's mother died of cancer last year.

Day also has had his share of troubles including previous arrests, drug use and mental issues, according to his brother.

Court documents obtained by our NBC Investigates unit reveal, Day was arrested last October, for allegedly threatening and assaulting his brother with a knife. Both charges are felonies.

Court records indicate his lawyer raised questions about Day's mental state, and he was evaluated by a court-appointed doctor.

In January, a Judge ruled that Day was mentally competent to stand trial.

But on January 31st, the two felony charges were dismissed for lack of evidence, and Day was released from jail.

Investigators said officers attempted to use tasers before firing on the suspect.

The officers involved are 5-year and 6-year veterans of the San Diego Police Department, investigators said.

Three New Jersey teenagers are facing sexual assault, child endangerment and child pornography charges for allegedly assaulting a girl while she was heavily intoxicated and recording it on an iPhone, prosecutors say.

The 15-year-old victim was found unconscious on her parents' front lawn in Elmwood Park on June 21, according to Bergen County prosecutors.

She was taken to St. Joseph's Medical Center and found to have a blood alcohol content of .27 percent. The girl later told police she had no memory of what happened that night.

It wasn't until July 7 that a friend of the victim told her she had seen a video on one of the suspects' iPhones showing the victim engaging in sexual activity with several men while she appeared to be highly intoxicated, according to prosecutors.

The next day, a 17-year-old male acquaintance told the girl that they had engaged in sexual activity in the backyard of a home where two of the other suspects reside, according to the authorities.

She went to Elmwood Park police with her parents and the friend who saw the video, and detectives recovered the video from the suspect who'd allegedly recorded it.

Two 18-year-old men were arrested July 9 on charges of aggravated sexual assault and remanded to Bergen County Jail, each on $150,000 bail.

Another 18-year-old suspect was arrested July 10 on charges of manufacturing child pornography, endangering the welfare of a child, invasion of privacy and possessing child pornography. He remains in Bergen County Jail on $200,000 bail.

The 17-year-old suspect was also arrested on a juvenile complaint of aggravated sexual assault, assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.

All of the suspects have additionally been ordered to stay away from the victim and her family.

Suspect Arrested in World Cup Party Killing

Police have arrested a suspect in connection to the killing of a man attending a World Cup party in National City last month.

Daniel A. Gonzalez was arrested Monday by Tijuana police and then turned over to National City police. He was booked in jail on suspicion of murder.

Police say Gonzales was identified as the suspect in the June 17 killing of Josue Crook, who was found shot dead in the 300 block of Highland Avenue outside the Rincon Del Mar restaurant.

He had been at the restaurant watching the Mexico-Brazil World Cup match earlier in the afternoon when a fight erupted, which later spilled into the street, police say.

Crook was shot outside, about 30 feet away from the business. While the restaurant had been hosting a World Cup celebration at the time, it’s unclear if the fight had anything to do with the soccer game.

Family members have said Crook wasn’t a violent or aggressive person and was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Police say the investigation is continuing.

Encinitas Seawall Fight Could Reach Beyond San Diego

A legal fight involving two Encinitas homeowners could have legal implications for homes all along the California coastline.

With city approval, two families made repairs to a storm-damaged seawall at Grandview Beach along Neptune Avenue.

In 2011, the California Coastal Commission approved the wall, but demanded the families agree to allow the permit to expire in 20 years.

After two decades, the families could be ordered to remove the seawall.

For its part, the commission said it’s critical to re-evaluate the seawalls every two decades and review coastline and environmental changes.

But the families sued, and won in the lower courts.

The Coastal Commission appealed and arguments were heard Monday.

Jennifer Lynch's family has lived here since 1970.

“It’s taken a huge financial toll as well as an emotional toll,” Lynch said.

“The thought that we won't be able to have that home, protect it and be able to go to the beach and enjoy it, it's been very difficult.”

Pacific Legal Foundation attorney Paul Beard said the commission is trying to engage in a power play.

“The fact is, the city of Encinitas unanimously approved our project. The Coastal Commission is engaged in a power play and simply wants to deny the family their rights to rebuild and protect their property,” Beard said.

According to the city there are 88-seawall in Encinitas alone.

Previously, a Coastal Commission spokesperson said those seawalls diminish the beaches by cutting off a natural source of sand replenishment.

The appeals court will release its decision within 90 days.

New Bed Designed to Help Premature Babies

A premature baby was resuscitated in San Diego last week using a new, specialized bed designed just for preemies.

Averi Snyder was born four weeks early and not breathing. Her umbilical cord was tied in a knot.

Mom Kim Snyder said the doctor didn't immediately alert her to the dangers but dad Shane Snyder said he saw the whole thing.

Seconds after she was delivered, Averi was placed into a special bed so that the team of doctors at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital could pump oxygen into her lungs while she was still attached to her mother's umbilical cord.

Within the first minute, Averi began to “pink up."

“[I was] mesmerized by what was going on and how everything took place and how fast they had her breathing,” Shane said. “It was pretty amazing.”

Kim was able to see Averi and kiss her before the staff took the newborn to the NICU.

The Snyders are one of the first families in the U.S. to use the new LifeStart resuscitation bed.

It's designed to delay umbilical cord clamping for the sickest or most premature babies, allowing them to receive blood and other fluids from mom.

It's a modern twist to an old concept that Snyder wishes was around when she delivered her first child.

“It's amazing and it’s lucky,” she said. “Our first child could've really benefitted from it. I hope that other parents get to experience it."

Sharp Mary Birch Hospital rolled out the equipment just last week becoming the first American hospital to put them in use.

Neonatologist Anup Katheria, M.D. said the beds are part of a research study focusing on pre-term births, or those babies delivered before 40 weeks.

The idea is that if doctors can start giving a distressed baby some oxygen at birth, they can take advantage of the first minute of life outside the womb and improve the infant’s outcome.

“Once the baby begins breathing in that first minute, the blood can naturally flow into the lungs allowing more stabilization to occur,” he said.

Umbilical cord blood is full of stem cells, oxygen carrying blood cells and white blood cells that help fight infections.

The fluids also help improve the baby's heart functions and reduce the child’s need for oxygen and blood transfusions.

The beds are placed beside the mother during delivery.

Each bed has a heated pad that mimics skin-to-skin warmth and allows the infant to be warmed from above and below.

So far, 10 babies have been treated using the four beds currently in use at the hospital.

As for Averi, she was still in the hospital Monday and progressing every day.

Her parents hope to take her home from the hospital on Wednesday.

Judge Approves Unconditional Release of Sexually Violent Predator

A San Diego judge has approved the unconditional release of a sexually violent predator who served 16 years behind bars for molesting two children under 10.

David Chambless, 53, was committed as a sexually violent predator in September 1998.

He was convicted of molesting two girls under 10. He was babysitting one of the girls when she was assaulted.

Nine years later, he was ordered into outpatient treatment in Jacumba where he has been closely monitored by a court-appointed company and law enforcement officials.

Now, he attends on an outpatient sex offender program and lives alone in Descanso.

On May 5, Chambless filed for unconditional release.

His neighbors say approving the request would be bad for the community, where many children live.

Nany Natter was one of the residents who attended Tuesday’s hearing.

“It's always been a safe haven for our family. In fact, the main open space is the portion in front of David's home. That's where they play ball, ride bikes, etc. So they're in his eyes,” Natter said.

Ilumina, City Reach Proposed Deal

One of the nation's leading biotechnology companies will stay in San Diego and keep jobs in the region under a deal announced Tuesday.

Recently named “World’s Smartest Company” by the MIT Technology Review, Illumina develops and makes instruments used to sequence human genomes.

Fifteen years ago, the company had seven people on the payroll. Now, 90 percent of the world’s sequencing is being done on Ilumina technologies.

“We’re thriving and science in San Diego is thriving,” CEO Jay Flatley said Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Flatley joined San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer to announce the development of a new 150,000 square foot facility to house manufacturing and logistics by 2016.

The company was considering other cities including Poway and Memphis until the City of San Diego proposed a deal.

The City will provide a tax rebate in exchange for Illumina retaining approximately 300 middle-class manufacturing jobs in the city.

The tax rebate cap would be $1.5 million and once that or 10 years is reached, San Diego will once again get 100 percent of Illumina’s tax revenue.

In return, the City will keep 30 percent of the biotech’s sales tax revenues in addition to the current level of sales and use tax generated by Illumina – approximately $1.3 million annually in the most recent year, officials said.

After the $1.5 million tax rebate cap has been reached or the term of the 10-year agreement ends, the City will return to receiving 100 percent of Illumina’s tax revenue.

A City Council vote to ratify the agreement is scheduled for the week of July 21.

“This means hundreds of high-wage middle-class jobs are staying in our city,” said San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer.

Flatley confirmed that there was considerable growth on the horizon.

With more than 1,500 employees, the biotechnology company has 120 open positions and expects to add 500 employees in San Diego this year alone.

Friends Share Certain Genes: Study

A new study suggests people share more than just common interests with their friends -- they may also share genes.

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego surveyed nearly 2,000 people in a study and found best friends have the most genetic similarities.

"There's a lot of explanations on why we would tend to associate with other people who are similar," said Matthew Jackson, a professor of economics at Stanford University. "This sort of adds a whole other layer to it. A deeper layer than one we had anticipated."

Jackson also said one of the most interesting parts of the study is the claim friends have a similar sense of smell, which is something that can bring them together.

"So somehow evolutionary pressures must push us to sense these things and to be able to recognize them even though we don't necessarily consciously see that," Jackson said.

Man Throws Sharp Post at Cop: DA

Police shot a 25-year-old New Jersey man who allegedly threw a 6-foot-long sharpened fence post at a police officer's head after he and another officer asked him to put it down, authorities say.

Prosecutors say two Jersey City police officers from the Emergency Services Unit were on patrol near Martin Luther King Drive around 2:30 a.m. when they saw the fence post-wielding man in front of a house.

The officers pulled up next to the man and ordered him to drop the post, but prosecutors say the man allegedly starting hitting their truck with it instead, then threw it through the passenger window, hitting one of the officers in the head.

The man then allegedly reached into the truck through the passenger window, grabbed the barrel of one of the officer's rifles and tried to pull the gun out of the window. A struggle ensued, and the gun discharged into the passenger side door, prosecutors said.

Authorities say it is believed that the rounds went through the passenger side door and hit the suspect. Both officers got out of the car and ordered him to the ground, but he allegedly refused to comply and hid his hand in his waistband as if he had a gun.

When the man wouldn't show his hands, one of the officers shot him. He was taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital, where he was to undergo surgery. Authorities say the man is expected to survive.

The two police officers were also being treated, one of them for a head injury suffered when the fence post was thrown through the truck window.

Any pending charges against the suspect weren't immediately clear.

SWAT teams were on hand to assist in the investigation.

Jersey City has been on edge since the fatal shooting of a rookie police officer at a Walgreens over the weekend. Melvin Santiago was shot and killed by a 23-year-old man as he responded to a call about an armed robbery at the drugstore. His funeral is scheduled for Friday.

Police shot and killed the suspect.

8 Bodies Found in Evicted Mortuary

Eight bodies were found in varying stages of decay at a Fort Worth funeral home whose operator was being evicted, police said.

The bodies found in the Johnson Family Mortuary belong to people ranging in age from infant to adult, police said. It is not clear how long they were in the funeral home.

The building's landlord had evicted the business' owners two weeks ago, but when the landlord checked on the building Tuesday morning, he found the unattended bodies inside, police told NBC 5.

The landlord contacted police, who then began investigating possible felony abuse of corpse.
Police said the facility did not have any refrigerated rooms, but the building did have working electricity. State regulations require refrigeration for bodies kept longer than 24 hours.

The bodies were removed later Tuesday by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office, which will identify the remains and notify the families.

The Johnson Family Mortuary's owner, Dondre Johnson, maintains he did nothing wrong.

"Business as usual, until our landlord came today and said he wanted to put us out," he said.

Yvonne Stewart said her family hired the funeral home in April when her aunt, Helen Jones, 70, died of lung cancer.

“We paid for the cremation so it’s not about the money,” Stewart said. “But now, where is my aunt?”

Stewart said the family was unable to reach anyone at the mortuary in the weeks after the funeral.

“Nobody’s here,” she said. “Nobody’s answering the phone.”

On Tuesday, she said, the Tarrant County medical examiner’s officer informed the family that Jones was possibly one of the bodies found inside.

"It’s sad you could do somebody like that," Stewart said. "That’s wrong. People don’t have any respect for the dead anymore."

Johnson said the bodies were properly cared for, and many people in the community came to the business' defense, saying the owners are good people.

Still, NBC 5 has learned they have several complaints against them from the Texas Funeral Service Commission.

"You can have a complaint and go there and get past that," Johnson said.

Now, some former customers wonder about the care of their loved ones.

"I want to know if my mama is resting in peace, and I really don't know that,” said Malette King.

There have been no arrests or charges in the case, and police say the investigation is continuing.

The Johnson Family Mortuary is located at 1051 South Handley Drive in east Fort Worth.

Anyone who believes they may be the next of kin of one of the eight deceased persons found at the funeral home should call the medical examiner's office at 817-920-5700, extension #5.

Court records show Dondre and Derrick Johnson lost a lawsuit filed in 2010 for not paying $159,730 in rent at another funeral home in south Fort Worth.

Girl, 8, Robbed While Selling Candy

An 8-year-old girl selling candy outside a store in San Francisco was assaulted and robbed Monday by a woman who said she needed money for a bus fare, police said.

The girl was selling candy with other children outside a store in the City's Western Addition neighborhood, near Divisadero and Eddy streets, about 1:45 p.m. Monday when the robbery took place.

Surveillance video shot by the store’s security camera shows the young victim and the suspect crossed paths minutes before the attack, according to police. The footage appears to show the girl and two of her friends inside the store holding candy and cash for a school fundraiser while the suspect tried – unsuccessfully – to buy a beer.

“The kids had the money in a clear plastic bag, so you can see all the [$1 bills] in the bag,” SFPD Officer Gordon Shyy said.

Within five minutes of the video being recorded, police say the 8-year-old was robbed outside the store.

“The suspect asked for change for the fare for a bus ride and ended up grabbing the child’s arm and twisting it until she let go of the bag of money,” Shyy said.

The woman grabbed the money and fled on a 24 Muni bus, police said.

The woman, described as being between 40 and 50 years old, was last seen wearing a black skirt and an orange shirt.

The girl was not injured in the robbery, police said.

Neighborhood residents said it’s not unusual to see kids selling fundraiser goodies on the street.

“There are a number of schools around here and the kids are always selling cookies, candy and all of us in the neighborhood try to help them out and support them because they’re great kids and there are good causes,” George Dougherty said. ”So it’s really sad that someone would take advantage of that.”

The suspect had not been found as of Tuesday afternoon, according to police.
