Moss Proclaims He's "The Greatest Receiver" in NFL History

$

Super Bowl Media Day is upon us, a time when the density of journalists and athletes reaches critical mass. Usually, this intense proximity causes one or two moments noteworthy for their ridiculousness, despite most players endeavoring to maintain a low profile.

Leave it to Niners wide receiver Randy Moss to make things interesting.

"I do think I'm the greatest receiver," declared Moss. "This year has been a down year for me statistically, the year before I retired was a down year and then in Oakland was a down year. So, I don’t really live on numbers, I really live on impact and what you're able to do out on that field. So I really do think that I'm the greatest receiver ever to play this game."

As heads around the world shook in disbelief, NFL Network analyst Rich Eisen said what we all were thinking.

"And Jerry Rice just threw something at his television set," joked Eisen, who went on to express his gratitude to Moss for offering something other than the standard boilerplate so many athletes regurgitate.

But sometimes boilerplate is exactly what a team needs, and that's what deposed Niners starting QB Alex Smith offered up. Media Day can be a grind under the best of circumstances, so imagine the dread felt by Smith, who lost his starting job in November, after sustaining a concussion during a 24-24 tie with the St. Louis Rams.

In less than three months, Smith has gone from leading the offense of a first-place team to not even having a podium at Media Day. But Smith took it like a man, standing there amid a rotating throng of journalists, addressing the biggest loss of his career.

"It's tough, for sure. I'm not gonna lie to you," Smith said. "It hasn't been the easiest thing, it's been frustrating, disappointing, for sure. I really felt like I was playing my best football right before the injury, so that's been tough. But at the same time, you deal with it, you move on… Do I still deal with it? For sure. But this is a team game. I love the locker room, I love the group of guys we have, and that's bigger than me. I certainly wasn't gonna put myself before any of that."

Colin Kaepernick, the man who replaced Smith as the starting QB, made every effort to be equally gracious about the awkward situation.

"Alex is a great guy, he's been phenomenal this whole time," Kaepernick said when asked about his relationship with his predecessor. "He's done everything he can to help, and he continues to help me."

Kaepernick hopes to lead San Francisco to their sixth Super Bowl championship, which would tie them with the Steelers for most all time. Naturally, he turned to Steve Young, who in 1995 led SF to the last of those titles, for some advice.

"Steve Young gave me two words that he thought about when he thought about the Super Bowl: 'humility' and 'fierce.' Those are two things that resonated with me.

Nobody drew a bigger crowd at Media Day than Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis, one of the NFL's biggest, loudest, most controversial personalities.

Among the first question thrown his way was about the recent "Saturday Night Live" sketch spoofing his emotional outburst during the National Anthem ahead of the AFC Championship game against the Patriots.

"I'm a big comedian myself, so I love comedy," laughed Lewis. "I looked at it, I enjoyed it, like most fans enjoyed it."

On a more serious note, Lewis is mentioned in a Sports Illustrated story that went online shortly before Lewis faced the media, in which it is claimed that the future Hall-of-Famer had used a banned substance, deer antler velvet extract, to come back from injury. Lewis brushed aside questions about the report.

"Two years ago it was the same report, I wouldn’t give that report or him any of my press," said Lewis. "He's not worthy of that. Next question."

Lewis offered a more formal denial via the Ravens.

"Ray has been randomly tested for banned substances and has never failed a test. We have never been notified of a failed test. He has never been notified of a failed test," Kevin Byrne, vice president of communications for the Ravens, told ESPN. "He denied using the substance discussed in the article and we believe him."

With five more days until the big game, you can be sure we haven't heard the last of deer antler velvet extract.

Man Arrested in Jamul Car Fire Death Case

Officials have arrested a suspect they believe left a man dead inside a burned-out car in San Diego's East County.

Miles B. Sharp was arrested and now faces a murder charge in the death of Dillon Davis, 20, of 4S Ranch, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

Davis was found dead inside the trunk of the car along Skyline Truck Trail east of Jamul around 4:30 a.m. September 20 last year.

The driver of a passing vehicle called 911 after seeing a car on fire. As they were fighting the flames, firefighters discovered a man's body in the trunk of the four-door sedan parked in front of a home.

The victim was so badly burned that investigators couldn't even determine a gender at first. Homicide investigators believed Davis was the victim of foul play.

Sharp was booked into the San Diego Central Jail on murder and arson charges. The investigation is continuing.

City Will Enforce Pot Zoning Laws

The City of San Diego will continue targeting medical marijuana dispensaries, setting aside Mayor Bob Filner's directive to police and code compliance officers to halt code enforcement, officials announced Tuesday.

Filner had said he wanted to present a new ordinance to regulate medical marijuana dispensaries, and in the meantime, dismiss violaters' cases.

However the mayor backed down from this effort Thursday when the City Council voted unanimously to not dismiss the cases.

"As I’ve said before, I want those who legitimately need medical marijuana for the relief of pain to have access to it legally," ordinanceaid in a statement. "That is the compassionate thing to do.”

He still hopes to introduce an ordinance to the city council sometime over the next month that will allow for "reasonable regulation" of dispensaries in San Diego, he said.

“I appreciate the Mayor’s leadership in moving the City toward a solution on medical marijuana dispensaries," said City Attorney Jan Goldsmith. "Our office looks forward to working with the Mayor and City Council on an ordinance."

"In the meantime, we will maintain the status quo through enforcement of current laws," Goldsmith added.

The father of a slain U.S. Navy officer was traveling to San Diego to speak with homicide investigators after a second son was taken into custody.

Jonathan Jake Tenorio, 25, of Guam, died of an apparent stab wound inside a unit at the River Front condo complex on Camino De La Reina in Mission Valley.

His body was discovered Sunday around 6:20 a.m.

The next day, investigators announced an arrest in the case – the victim’s 21-year-old brother Zachary Tenorio. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department website, Zachary is being held for murder.

In an update Tuesday, police confirmed that Zachary Tenorio called police Sunday morning reporting the death.

There are still a lot of other questions about what happened.

"We're not exactly sure what happened. There must have been some sort of argument, some sort of physical altercation that led to the victim being stabbed," San Diego police Lt Jorge Duran said.

Questions likely shared by the father of both men who was on his way to San Diego Monday.

"You can ask anybody that knows Jonathan the type of person he is and you know he's very respectful," his father told a Guam website.

As for the brother’s arrest, he said they are a close, tight-knit family. He told the website he had been briefed on the situation but added, "They told me some stuff and I really don't want to put any information out there."

Jonathan Tenorio was a newlywed and a 2012 graduate of the Naval Academy just beginning his military career in San Diego.

Tenorio graduated as a Surface Warfare Officer in May 2012. He was assigned to serve on USS Bunker Hill.

San Diego police officers were called to help a wandering sea lion pup in Pacific Beach Tuesday morning.

It was around 3 a.m. when the baby sea lion decided to hide under an SUV parked on Ocean near Grand Avenue.

While not quite trapped there, the animal had no plans to move on.

That is until a lieutenant took a loop catch pole while a sergeant backed up the SUV. No doubt a maneuver they teach at the academy.

Success! The now exposed sea lion pup was easy to wrangle and nudge back to the beach.

The officers followed along until the animal made its way into the surf.

Comeback for California Housing Prices

Heralding continued strength in the housing market locally and nationwide, home prices in major California cities jumped considerably year-over-year, according to data released Tuesday.

In Los Angeles, prices jumped 7.7% in November when compared to the previous year, the S&P/Case Shiller Home Price Index showed.

Prices in San Diego rose 8% over the previous year, and in San Francisco they jumped nearly 13%, the index showed. On a monthly basis, LA prices rose 0.4% from October to November. San Diego homes were up 0.9% during that period, and San Francisco up 1.4%.

The California cities were among a number of metropolitan areas nationwide where residential property posted significant gains in November, the most recent full month for which sales information is available.

The biggest improvement came in Phoenix, where home prices went up 22.8%.

Despite the gains in many cities, it was clear that the market still struggled in some places. Prices in New York fell 1.2% in November 2012 over the prior year, and 1.1% over the previous month.

Prices also slipped in Chicago and Boston when examined on a month-to-month basis, although both cities showed modest gains year-over-year.

Schools Placed on Lockdown During Manhunt

Four schools in Tierrasanta were placed on lockdown and police went door-to-door at nearby homes searching for a homicide suspect Tuesday afternoon.

Police called Kumeyaay Elementary School on 6475 Antigua Boulevard just before 1 p.m. and told officials to place the school on lockdown, according to a school spokesperson.

Shortly after, three other schools were placed on lockdown. The schools included Tierrasanta Elementary School, De Portola Middle School, and Serra High School.

"A little earlier today we had a call for assistance from the U.S. Marshal’s office as well as the OC task force in the area looking for a murder suspect," said Chief of San Diego Unified School District police Rueben Littlejohn. "He fled on foot and they lost him in this general area."

Littlejohn said the suspect is Matthew Rowley, pictured below. He was born in 1990 and is wanted for murder in Orange County.

The lockdown was lifted at all the schools except for Kumeyaay at about 2:15 p.m. By 3 p.m. the search was called off, though authorities did not locate Rowley.

At about 2:45 p.m. the parents were allowed to come 10-at-a-time to Kumeyaay Elementary School eastbound on Antigua Road to pick up their kids. They can’t come westbound on that road, Littlejohn said.

The Corona Police Department released an alert on Wednesday last week on Rowley, saying he was a suspect in a fatal shooting. They warned residents that he is considered armed and dangerous and that the handgun he used is still outstanding.

In the alert, police said they responded to the 1100 block of Border Avenue in Corona at about 9:30 the night of January 16.

When they arrived, officers found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to the hospital and later died. Police believe Rowley was responsible in the fatal shooting. The Corona Police Department is assisting the San Diego Police Department in their search for him.

According to SDPD department spokesperson Jim Johnson, SDPD didn’t request the school be locked down. Johnson said said the district's police department was on the call and they likely called for the lockdown as a precaution.

Police surrounded Kumeyaay Elementary school armed with guns as the search was underway.

Kumeyaay school is located east of I-15 and south of SR-52. Police could be seen searching homes and the park nearby during the search. K9 and air assistance units were also helping in the search.

Scammed Football Fan Scores Super Bowl Tickets

Sharon Osgood and her boyfriend are headed to the Super Bowl even after they were bilked out of nearly $6,000 when they thought they were buying the prized football tickets on Craigslist.

Despite the scam, Osgood emerged a winner.

Her story caught the attention of Ticketmaster CEO Nathan Hubbard, who offered Osgood four free tickets and set her up with breakfast with NFL legend Troy Aikman, according to the Mercury News, which first reported her story.

A 49ers representative is giving her a pair of tickets, too, because Osgood wanted to bring her nephew's girlfriend. Her boyfriend's daughter and her nephew are also going. She has one left over for another relative.

"I am so super excited," Osgood told NBC Bay Area on Tuesday afternoon. "I can't tell you how blessed I feel. We were crushed, and then we were elated."

A resident of Hayward, Calif., in the Bay Area, Osgood  was scouring the Internet looking for deals on Super Bowl tickets so she could see her beloved San Francisco 49ers play the Baltimore Ravens in New Orleans on Sunday.

She found an offer on Craiglist from someone named "R. Thomas Pham Quan," who was selling four tickets for $5,900. He told her that he was a tax attorney in Boca Raton, Fla., and a Baltimore Ravens season ticket holder.

Osgood texted and spoke on the phone with this person for four days, she said. She wired the money to the man's credit union, and on Monday, received a FedEx package. But there were no Super Bowl tickets inside.

Instead of tickets, Osgood said, she was sent a picture of quarterbacks Colin Kaepernick and Joe Flacco with a message underneath that read: "Enjoy the game!!!! Go Ravens!!!"

On Tuesday, the phone number she had been using was no longer working. She said she filed a report with the Alameda County Sheriff's Department late Monday. A spokesman for the sheriff's office was not immediately available to confirm the details.

Osgood said the person sounded so convincing and she felt she "knew" him because they had so many phone and text conversations about the transaction.

"I trusted the guy," she said.

Craigslist warns that buyers should not wire money directly to sellers. Best practices in this online marketing world are that buyers and sellers who connect on Craigslist should meet in public places and pay in cash.

Buyers and sellers on sites such as eBay should heed sellers' ratings listed online, which reflect their number of successful transactions, and pay through PayPal, a secured site owned by eBay.

Osgood was initially worried about going public with her story. But now, she's happy she decided she put a face on her saga. Not only did she score free tickets, but she said she wants to prevent others from falling prey to ticket scammers.

"Who knows? Maybe they scammed other people, too," she said. "I won't ever do this again."

What could go wrong?

Plenty, according to users of Vine, the new Twitter app that allows users to share short looping videos of up to six seconds in length, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Vine has "been plagued with porn" since its launch, according to the newspaper. So much so that Twitter has blocked several adult-themed search terms from use.

So no more searching for #sex, #booty, or #porn. But in case you're wondering, #nsfw and #pornvine work for now.

Just don't see something you want to unsee.

FBI: Man Tricked Women Into Posing Naked on Skype

A man who authorities say tricked women into posing nude on the Skype internet video service has been arrested in Glendale.

The U.S. Attorney's office on Tuesday said that the FBI had arrested a 27-year-old whom it confirmed was named Karen "Gary" Kazaryan, saying he had hacked into hundreds of women's Facebook accounts and trolled them for naked pictures.

More: FBI Search Warrant | U.S. Attorney Indictment

He then posed as the women online and persuaded their friends to send naked pictures of themselves or appear in the nude on Skype, the U.S. Attorney's office said in a press release.

"It was a horrifying, humiliating, terrible experience for these women," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Tracy Wilkison. "It's a case that we take extremely seriously."

"One of the women described the entire thing as like rape," Wilkison said.

Investigators found about 3,000 pictures of nude or semi-nude women on Kazaryan's computer.

The U.S. Attorney's office said that if the women did not take off their clothes for him on Skype, he hacked into their Facebook accounts and posted nude pictures that he already had in his possession.

He was arrested on federal computer hacking charges and could face up to 105 years in prison if convicted on all counts.

The alleged "sextortion" case, as federal investigators have dubbed it, dates back to 2009.

Authorities say they have not yet found all of the alleged victims in the case, and urge women who think they may have been targeted by Kazaryan to contact the FBI's Los Angeles field office at 310-477-6565.

A man was arrested late Tuesday night in North Park after allegedly fleeing from police in a stolen car and then running several miles on foot, authorities said.

Police attempted to pull over a stolen car near I-8 and Fairmount Avenue near San Diego State University at about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to university police.

Officers chased the car onto the westbound I-8 to the southbound I-805. The driver exited on University Avenue in North Park, then headed south on Boundary Street.

At that point, at least one person jumped out of the car and fled on foot. It is unclear whether that person was the suspect or a passenger.

The individual fled onto the 2200 block of Montclair Street.

After a search of the area on foot and in the air, police located suspect Daniel Hubbard near Montezuma Road and 55th Street -- at least 6 miles away from where he fled -- and arrested him.

Hubbard faces charges of felony evading and possession of a stolen car. University police said he is not an SDSU student.

Dr. Phil: Hoax Mastermind Fell in Love with T'eo

The 22-year-old man who posed as Manti Te'o's online gilfriend "fell deeply, romantically in love" with the Notre Dame linebacker, Dr. Phil McGraw said after interviewing the alleged hoaxer.

After the lengthy interview with Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, McGraw said he also believes that Te'o had no part in the hoax that made national headlines at the end of the team's undefeated season.

"Absolutely, unequivocally no," McGraw told NBC's Mike Taibbi in a segment on the "Today" show.

In a two-part interview that will air on the "Dr. Phil" show, Tuiasosopo said that he tried to end the ruse, but they kept getting back together. The two-year long masquerade was eventually brought to light by the blog Deadspin.com in a investigative story that detailed the timeline of their relationship.

"There were many times where Manti and Lennay had broken up, but something would bring them back together whether it was something going on in his life or in Lennay’s life, or in this case, my life,’’ he told McGraw in the interview, which will air on Thursday and Friday.

For full U.S. news coverage, visit NBCNews.com.

McGraw said Tuiasosopo fell victim to some life experiences that "damaged this young man."

“Here we have a young man that fell deeply, romantically in love,’’ McGraw said. “I asked him straight up, ‘Was this a romantic relationship with you?’ And he says yes. I said, ‘Are you then therefore gay?’ And he said, ‘When you put it that way, yes.’ And then he caught himself and said, ‘I am confused.’’’

Tuiasosopo created a fake Twitter profile under the name Lennay Kekua using Facebook photos from a high school classmate to foster a romantic relationship with Te'o.

The death of Te'o's grandmother and Kekua's supposed battle with leukemia and subsequent death added to the inspiring narrative of a football star who led his team to the BCS championship in December.

Te'o told Katie Couric on her talk show last week that he did not play a part in the hoax.

Niners Coach's "Saved by the Bell" Cameo Resurfaces

$

If you're wondering what kind of inspirational oration the San Francisco 49ers might hear from Coach Jim Harbaugh during Sunday's Super Bowl, an old episode of "Saved by the Bell" may offer some clues.

In 1996, Harbaugh was coming off the best season of his career. Though he was only 7-5 as the Colts' starting QB that season, he led the league in passer rating, besting the likes of Brett Favre, Troy Aikman, Steve Young and Dan Marino, and was named to the Pro Bowl.

But perhaps the greatest honor conferred upon Harbaugh was a guest appearance as himself on "Saved by the Bell: The New Class." Watching the clip, one is awed by Harbaugh's perfect hair, the blazer over the mock turtleneck and the razor-sharp writing.

In it, Harbaugh is Screech's cousin, stopping by for lunch and to give Screech's friend Eric a pep talk and, ultimately, some help with a school project.

"Screech, is that you? I didn’t recognize you under all those muscles," Harbaugh says in greeting his cousin, eliciting a roar of laugh track.

Eric and his friends were supposed to do a project for Mr. Dewey about what it means to be a hero, but because of Eric, all three of them are facing an F. However, Harbaugh steps in at the 11th hour to explain to their class what heroism really is:

"Being a hero isn’t about what you do out there on the field. It's about who you are--in here," Harbaugh explained as he put his hand over his heart. "It's about helping your friends, your school and your community."

As luck would have, the teacher, Mr. Dewey, is an Indianapolis native, and Harbaugh is his hero. Dewey is so impressed with Harbaugh's speech he gives all the kids an A. It's a chain of events driven by a demented sense of morality, offering an utterly indecipherable lesson about who knows what.

Jim also had a cameo on the HBO series "Arli$$," and appeared alongside fellow NFL stars Terry Bradshaw, Carl Banks and Ken Norton Jr. in an episode of "The Adventures of Brisco County." Harbaugh's brother John, coach of the Baltimore Ravens, has never had an acting career.

Advantage: Niners.

The next time someone tries to tell you how terrible TV has gotten, let Harbaugh's "Saved by the Bell" appearance stand as a reminder of how far the medium has come.

Flu-Related Deaths Rise to 19 in San Diego

Five more San Diego residents died from influenza last week, bringing the county's death toll up to 19, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency.

The number of deaths is close to exceeding the county's record of 22 flu-related deaths in the 2003-04 season, not including the H1N1-related deaths from 2009 through 2011.

“We have had mild flu seasons in the past two years," said county public health officer Wilma Wooten.  "[But] this year has strains that are making people sicker."

The ages of the victims ranges from 46 to 97, according to a statement from the County Health and Human Services Agency. All but one of the patients had underlying medical conditions.

How to Avoid the Flu

The number of people who have died from the flu has risen from 14 last week to 19 this week. But the county is also seeing a quickly rising number of people affected by the flu as well. This week alone, the county reported 861 lab-confirmed flu cases. That's up from about 500 last week.

The number of flu cases this season has now passed 2,000. Those cases make up 12 percent of all emergency visits now, compared to 10 percent last week.

Despite the numbers, the county is still considering this a moderate influenza season.

The flu vaccine is still available at local pharmacies and doctors’ offices. County public health centers also have flu shots for children and adults with no medical insurance.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people 6 months and older receive a vaccination.

Flu Tips for Parents of Young Children

State officials warned earlier this month that flu is on the rise, though California's numbers have been comparatively low so far this season.

Most people who become ill should recuperate at home, Wooten said. If symptoms do not improve or become worse, individuals should seek medical attention from their doctor or urgent care provider, but not an emergency department.

WATCH: Bikers Shut Down Freeway for Marriage Proposal

After several hundred motorcyclists shut down the 10 Freeway so one biker could propose to his girlfriend on the pavement, the California Highway Patrol says criminal charges could be filed.

A YouTube video of the dramatic interstate proposal, posted below, drew attention to the event, which happened Sunday under a freeway overpass in West Covina, about 20 miles east of Los Angeles.

In the video, many dozens of motorcyclists occupied all eastbound lanes of the freeway, with the pack headed toward the overpass where family members were gathered, looking down.

After emitting a cloud of pink smoke from his motorcycle, a biker got down on one knee before his girlfriend, who was still wearing her red helmet. Several other bikers did wheelies off to the side, with between 300 to 400 bikers behind them.

With smoke swirling, the other bikers gathered around the couple, who got a few congratulatory hugs. The new fiancée looked shocked.

Then they got back on their bikes and cruised forward, some bikers pumping their fists in the air. Regular vehicle traffic, backed up, started moving again as most of the bikers exited the freeway at Barranca Street.

"Hector 'Tank' Martinez proposed to Paige Hernandez in front of his family and friends," the YouTube caption reads. "Big ups to the 710 Bikerz and everyone else who took part in this event."

In an interview with the radio station Power 106 on Monday, Martinez said he had been planning the event for several months.

Hernandez said she just thought it was a regular Sunday ride.

Martinez said no authorities had been in touch with them.

"You're definitely going to jail," the radio DJ said.

CHP said officers arrived at the scene after it had been cleared.

But the agency is investigating and said about 20 motorcyclists were cited for traffic violations that occurred on surface streets after the proposal. Potential charges could range from various misdemeanors to felonies for impeding traffic, according to CHP Officer Jose Barrios.

"It’s a public safety issue as well," Barrios said. "Reckless driving, stopping when it’s not an emergency stop -- just a few of the violations they were committing at the time."

Katy Lacy, who works at nearby coffee shop, said the pack of motorcyclists made such a commotion that she had to stop taking orders for about 10 minutes.

"It was very loud," Lacy said. "A lot of smoke in the air."

Nonetheless, she said she found the grand gesture quite romantic, even if it irritated hundreds of motorists.

It's not the first a stunt has shut down a Southern California freeway. In October 2010, an Orange County band forced the the 101 Freeway to close in Hollywood and got out of a truck to play a song about the roadway.

Members of the band, the Imperial Stars, faced felony charges.
