Kings Advance to Stanley Cup Final

The Los Angeles Kings have advanced to the Stanley Cup Final with a 5-4 overtime victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday night. Alec Martinez picked up the overtime winner to send the Kings to their second Cup Final in three seasons.

The Kings will open up the Final at home on Wednesday night at Staples Center when they welcome the Eastern Conference champion New York Rangers to the West Coast. The Rangers won a 1-0 Game 6 victory over the Montreal Canadiens to clinch their berth in the Final for the first time in two decades.

The game got off to a fast start as both teams tried to establish their game plans early, but it was the Blackhawks that got on the board first. After a lengthy possession in the offensive zone, Patrick Kane feathered a pass across the ice to Brandon Saad, who fired a shot off of Jonathan Quick’s arm and into the cage to give Chicago a 1-0 lead about five minutes into the game.

The Blackhawks continued to press the issue on offense after that goal, but they were unable to light the lamp again. Duncan Keith had a great chance from the slot, but his shot skips wide. Ben Smith also had a chance that he deflected just wide, and he collected his own rebound and put another shot on net, but Quick smothered the opportunity.

The constant pressure on Chicago’s side of the ice finally paid off as they got a power play goal a few minutes later. Brent Seabrook received a pass at the blue line after Kane got into the zone, and when Seabrook’s shot was deflected by Kane to the middle of the ice, Jonathan Toews was there to tap in the loose puck and putting Chicago up by a 2-0 score.

After those two goals, it seemed as though the Kings finally got their skates underneath them a bit, and they began to pepper Corey Crawford with shots. Tyler Toffoli fired a shot off the post after Johnny Oduya lost the puck in his skates, but the Kings’ forward rebounded nicely by picking up the primary assist on a Jeff Carter goal a few moments later. When Toffoli’s shot bounced into the air off of Crawford, Carter batted it into the goal, and when video review upheld the play, the Kings only trailed by a 2-1 margin.

In the blink of an eye, the Kings tied things up. This time it was Justin Williams doing the damage, as he collected the rebound on a shot that bounced off of Michal Rozsival in front, and he fired a snap shot past Crawford to tie things up at 2-2.

Just 12 seconds later, the Kings turned the puck over in the neutral zone, and the Blackhawks took the lead right back. Patrick Sharp carried the puck into the offensive zone, and when he put a shot toward the goal from the face-off circle, it bounced over Quick’s leg pad and into the net to give Chicago a 3-2 lead heading into the first intermission.

The Blackhawks got off to a dominant start in the period, preventing the Kings from getting a single shot on goal in the first seven minutes of the frame. The Hawks had some good possessions over that stretch, but they were unable to add onto their lead, and it ended up costing them.

About halfway through the period, the Kings established some good possession in the offensive zone, and when Dwight King’s shot toward the net was deflected by Michal Handzus, Toffoli picked it up and deposited it into the empty net to make it a 3-3 game.

As the period wore on, both teams had power play opportunities, but neither could convert. The Blackhawks had a good chance on a Keith shot from the point, but Quick was able to make the save and smother the puck to keep the game tied up. Kane also made a key play during a 4-on-4 stretch when Mike Richards tried to jump out on a breakaway, backchecking the puck carrier and forcing an awkward shot that didn’t find its way on net.

The Blackhawks got another power play late in the period, and this time they were able to convert. With Jake Muzzin screening Quick, Sharp got the puck near the blue line and fired a slap shot just inside the near post to give the Hawks a 4-3 lead after two periods.

The third period got started with both teams picking up quality chances, but the goaltenders and defenses stepped up in a big way. Crawford made a key save on Tanner Pearson on the rush to keep his team ahead, and Quick returned the favor at the other end by stoning a chance by Marcus Kruger. Alec Martinez also made a good play to break up a cross-ice pass on a 2-on-1 rush by Chicago, knocking Bryan Bickell's pass away.

Finally, the Kings ended up breaking through with a goal with a little over seven minutes remaining in regulation. On a 3-on-2 rush, Dustin Brown fired a high shot that Crawford was able to stop, but the puck bounced right to Marian Gaborik, who calmly deposited the rebound into the net to tie things up at 4-4.

Just before the end of regulation, the Hawks got a couple more good chances, but Quick made his biggest save of the game to force overtime. Andrew Shaw fired in a shot from the slot that Quick stopped, and he had to smother the rebound quickly before Kane could get at the loose puck.

As the overtime got underway, both teams got their fair share of chances, but just under six minutes in, it was the Kings that ended up triumphing. Williams got the puck in the middle of the zone, and when his shot deflected off of Martinez's stick and Chicago defenseman Nick Leddy, it popped up over Crawford's shoulder and into the back of the net to send the Kings back to the Cup Final for the second time in three seasons.

The Stanley Cup Final will begin on Wednesday night in Los Angeles as the Kings take on the New York Rangers. The game can be seen on NBC.

A driver and his vehicle were badly banged up when he flew off the southbound Interstate 15, down a 75-foot embankment and into a drainage ditch Sunday afternoon.

California Highway Patrol officials say for an unknown reason, the man drove off the freeway, barely missed some trees and landed in a ditch between I-15 and I-805 in North Park around 2:41 p.m.

The man was able to climb out of his car by himself, but he was injured.

When CHP officers arrived, they arrested the driver for suspected DUI. Emergency crews took him to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries, and after treatment, he will be released into law enforcement custody.

The man was the only one in the vehicle.

A nationwide manhunt is underway for a San Francisco social media consultant wanted by the FBI on suspicion of possessing explosives.

Federal agents say 42-year-old Ryan Kelly Chamberlain II is armed and dangerous.

FBI spokesman Peter Lee said Sunday that Chamberlain was last seen wearing a dark blue, hooded sweatshirt and jeans. On Saturday, agents searched his apartment and allege that he is wanted in connection for allegedly possessing explosives in his Russian Hill apartment on Polk Street.

Trying to dispell some rumors, Lee said agents did not find any ricin or other chemical or biological threats in the residence. But, Lee said, "He did possess explosives at his residence."

An FBI source told NBC Bay Area that crews found a chemical in the apartment that, if not handled correctly, can kill. The person may have bought the chemical -- which is often used in assisted suicide situations -- on the Internet, according to the source.

The FBI declined further comment on the intent or motive behind the explosive material in light of the ongoing investigation.

Chamberlain is 6' 3" tall, weighs 225 lbs and has blue eyes and brown hair, according to Lee. He was last seen south of San Francisco Sunday, driving a white 2008 Nissan Altima with a California or Texas license plates of either 7FQY085 or BX9M042. The FBI also provided a photo of Chamberlain.

Mark Mosher, creative director of San Francisco consulting firm BMWL, told the San Francisco Chronicle that Chamberlain was hired by almost every local political consulting firm at one point or another. As recently as Friday, he was chiming in on Mosher's Facebook feed about gun control and mental health.

Chamberlain, a Bay Area native, attended the University of Iowa before embarking on a career as a music journalist in Des Moines, according to his online resume. He later moved to San Francisco, and at age 30, made a bid for a spot on the Republican Party County Central Committee in San Francisco, an organization that governs the local party and doles out critical endorsements.

The past chair of the San Francisco Republican Party, Howard Epstein, has confirmed Chamberlain served on the Republican Central Committee in San Francisco before switching over to the Democratic Party.

Epstein said he was absolutely stunned.

“To have the explosives and all that is just totally mind-boggling to me,” Epstein said. “Well, I’m hoping that he turns himself in. I hope he doesn’t get into any more trouble. I don’t know what he’s thinking. I don’t know what he’s been doing the last few years, what’s going on in his head. I’m just hoping that this all comes out and nobody gets hurt.”

During the 2012 NFL season, Chamberlain was an independent contractor for The Chronicle and tweeted and posted links to Facebook to boost coverage for the San Francisco 49ers Insider iPad app, according to the Chronicle.

Most recently, he worked in public relations for several Bay Area tech, apparel and marketing companies.

The police activity outside Chamberlain's apartment over the weekend created a buzz in the neighborhood.

Crews wearing hazmat suits were seen going in and out of the building and people gathered on the roof of the building, according to a witness. More than a dozen bags of evidence were collected Saturday.

"Actually, as I was walking down here, I thought it was a film set," onlooker Faisal Choudry said. "And somebody said the FBI is here investigating, and they’ve been here since the morning."

Those who live inside the building told NBC Bay Area the FBI has taken at least two computers from the apartment.

Neighbors said they do not know much about the man who lives in the unit except he is in his 40s and works in marketing. They described him as quiet and polite.

"I know this person who lives in this apartment," Fechtar said. "It’s just kind of weird. He seems like a nice guy, and he probably is."

Chamberlain's warrant and affidavit are currently sealed.

Bookkeeper Stole $830K from Veterans Organization: Police

The bookkeeper of a national veterans organization is accused of stealing more than $800,000 from the organization and using company credit cards for her personal airfare, vacations, and Internet purchases.

Cynthia Tanner appeared in court on Monday, where bond was set at $500,000.

In late May, the president of the National Veteran Services Fund called Darien police to report embezzlement after an accounting firm discovered irregularities in the company’s financial statements, police said.

The National Veteran Services Fund released a statement saying they worked with their CPAs after the audit revealed issues, contacted an attorney and met with Darien Police.

"The matter is in the hands of the authorities for action and therefore we have no further comment at this time," and e-mailed statement from Phil Kraft, executive director of the fund, says.

Investigators said Tanner is accused of embezzling more than $830,000 from the organization’s checking account alone over a five-year span.

The charges, however, are just for what she is accused of embezzling in 2013. Police said Tanner is accused of writing 135 unauthorized checks in 2013 for more $185,000, made payable to herself and her family members.

Tanner had worked for the National Veteran Services Fund since 2008 and was responsible for payroll and disbursing funds to the charity’s clients, according to police.

The fund, based in Darien, accepts donations to help veterans and their families across the country and used the money to pay for wheelchairs, scooters and ramps for veterans.

They have also paid utility bills for veterans and their families in danger of homelessness, as well as provided temporary housing.

The fund has also provided veterans with snow tires, dentures and a veterinary bill for a veteran’s companion animal.

Police said Tanner is accused of writing checks from the fund to pay herself money she was not entitled to, as well as checks to relatives.

However, she fabricated the financial ledger to indicate the checks were written to veterans or clients of the fund, police said.

Tanner turned herself in to police on Monday.  She has been charged with first-degree larceny. She  was being held on a $250,000 court-set bond, but that amount was doubled. She is due in court on June 30.

Her attorney did not comment on the allegations and said he needs more time to speak with his client.

Tanner was arraigned in Stamford Superior Court on Monday and is due back in court on June 30.

Police said more arrests are expected.

Hunter "Concerned" About Speed of POW Deal

As U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl recuperates at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, a member of Congress has called for a hearing to look into the controversial exchange of prisoners over the weekend.

U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter R-50th District is one of several political leaders who are publicly questioning the negotiations behind the exchange of Bergdahl for five Taliban prisoners from Guantanamo Bay.

In a letter addressed to President Barack Obama, the representative who served as a U.S. Marine in Iraq and Afghanistan said he was “concerned by the sudden urgency” of the decision to swap prisoners.

“Now a situation has been created whereby prisoner exchanges – specifically disproportionate exchanges – are viewed by the Taliban and other aligned forces as achievable,” Rep. Hunter wrote.

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham's office has requested a hearing with the Senate Armed Services Committee regarding the exchange.

On Sunday, officials said that Bergdahl's health and safety appeared to be in jeopardy.

"Had we waited and lost him," said national security adviser Susan Rice, "I don't think anybody would have forgiven the United States government."

Medical staff at Landstuhl in Germany said Bergdahl is being treated for nutritional deficiencies suffered as he was held for five years in captivity but did not release further details about his condition.

The hospital said in a statement Monday that "there is no pre-determined amount of time involved in the reintegration process" for the 28-year-old.

Minkow to Pay $3M Back to Church After Theft

Convicted con man Barry Minkow has agreed to pay about $3.4 million in restitution to victims from whom he stolen money, while associated with a local church, his attorney told NBC 7.

Minkow’s attorney, Mark Adams said about $2.8 million of that amount will go directly to the church.

Adams said there was no hearing Monday on the restitution issue because the prosecution and defense had reached an agreement on the amount and terms of the restitution and filed it with the court.

Minkow opened unauthorized accounts, forged signatures on checks and misused member donations  while working with the San Diego Community Bible Church.

Minkow has agreed to pay the IRS $251,000 in taxes owed, and will pay the San Diego Foundation $65,000 for funds it lost to his fraudulent act ivies.

Individual victims will be paid remainder of the restitution amount.

How much all of those victims will actually receive, and when they’ll get the money, is unknown: Minkow’s current release date from federal prison term is June, 2019.

Should he work again after prison, a portion of his earnings will go to his victims, Adams explained.

While in prison, 50 percent of his prison earning, or $100 a year, whichever amount is greater, will go towards restitution.

At age 21, Minkow was the youngest person to take a company public and soon earned more than a million dollars in the deal.

However, ZZZZ Best Carpet Company turned out to be involved in a fraud scheme in which investors poured $100 million into fake fire and water restoration projects.

In 1988, Minkow was sentenced to 25 years in prison after being convicted of 57 fraud charges. He was released early in 1995.

Minkow became pastor of the San Diego church two years later, after undergoing a religious conversion in prison.

4.2-Magnitude Earthquake Hits L.A.

A shallow earthquake that struck the Westwood area Sunday evening was upgraded to magnitude 4.2, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The temblor, initially reported as magnitude 3.8, hit at 7:36 p.m. about 4 miles west-northwest of Westwood, the USGS said. There were no immediate reports of injuries, damage or power outages.

"It was a pretty big rattle," said Yuri Thomas, who was in Westwood when he felt shaking.

The Los Angeles Fire Department went into earthquake mode, sending firefighters from all 106 stations across the city to check for damage. About an hour later, the LAFD said no damage had been found.

Scientists said the quake may have been an aftershock of a magnitude-4.4 temblor that struck west Los Angeles in March. They later determined that the epicenter of Sunday's quake was too far away for the two events to be connected.

"The new location is deeper, so farther away from the stations. To create the same signal farther away, it must be bigger," tweeted Dr. Lucy Jones.

NBC4 viewers reported feeling the shaking in various locations, including Pacific Palisades, Sherman Oaks, Tarzana, Santa Monica, Simi Valley and Panorama City.

In 72 years leading up to 2013, the Los Angeles basin had 36 earthquakes of magnitude 4 or greater, Jones tweeted. So far in 2014, there have been three.

Jones said the region may be entering a more active seismic period.

A street sweeper crashed into a New Jersey home Monday morning after a country club worker set a leaf blower in its cab and the tool disengaged the parking brake, police said.

The 48-year-old worker had parked the sweeper on a hill on Indian Terrace in Sparta while he used the leaf blower nearby.

Police said when he set the blower in the sweeper's cab, it freed the parking brake and sent the 28,000-pound truck rolling down the hill, where it crossed a road, smashed a mailbox and careened into a house.

No one was in the home, but it suffered extensive damage, police said.

The worker hurt his knee chasing after the sweeper.

Padres Try to Hit Magic Number Against Pirates

$
0
0

It’s a case of simple math for the Padres this season: Score four runs and you’ve got a really good chance of winning games, as the team is now 20-3 when hitting that mark.

That was evident over the weekend, where the Friars went on the road to take two of three from the red-hot Chicago White Sox by scoring – wait for it – exactly four runs in each of their wins.
So the question remains, why don’t they do that more often?

Put aside a loss to Chris Sale in the finale – nobody was hitting that guy on Sunday – and you’ve still got the recipe for winning. It was just the second series win on the road for the Padres and something to build on as they head home for a week.

Enter the Pittsburgh Pirates, a similar team (fourth place in their division) with a similar record (26-30, just one loss better than the Padres). They don’t like the road either, as evidenced by their 10-17 record away from PNC Park.

The Padres have had great success against the Bucs, winning 19 of their last 25 meetings overall and eight of 12 at Petco Park. The Pirates are also coming off winning three of four against the Dodgers, which is worth toasting with any Pittsburgh-ites (Pittsburgh-ians?) you might come across at Bub’s this week.

After all, we’re all friends as long as the Dodgers are losing, right? Here’s a preview of the upcoming series.

What’s at stake: Well, another team that’s been floundering around the .500 mark, unable to get over that elusive hump. The Pirates are trying to return to the playoffs after a great run last year that saw them reach the postseason for the first time in more than 20 years.

They play 13 of their next 16 games against National League Central foes, so they will be looking to load up on wins before things get real in the division.

For the Padres, this starts a stretch of 16 straight games against teams at or below .500 before the Dodgers come to town in three weeks. What the Friars do in these upcoming weeks will determine whether we’re talking about a team that can contend or not down the stretch.

Matchups:
Monday, 7:10 p.m.:
Tim Stauffer (R, 2-1, 4.50) vs. Charlie Morton (R, 1-7, 3.29)
Stauffer followed up a win in his first start of the season with an absolute stinker (seven runs allowed while recording just one out) his last time out. He absolutely has to get some innings in to save the bullpen. Poor Morton can’t catch a break – he has given up less than four runs in six of seven starts, yet has taken a loss in five of those.

Tuesday, 7:30 p.m.: Padres starter TBA vs. Gerrit Cole (R, 5-3, 3.80)
The Padres will most likely call someone up to take the start. Potential candidates: Jesse Hahn, Odrisamar Despaigne or Keyvius Sampson. Cole, a Newport Beach native, has three straight quality starts.

Wednesday, 3:40 p.m.: Ian Kennedy (R, 4-6, 3.42) vs. Francisco Liriano (L, 1-5, 4.62)
Kennedy is throwing his best all season, with 15 strikeouts and just two earned runs in his last two starts. Liriano has failed to get out of the sixth inning in his last three outings.

Who to watch:
Padres:
Chase Headley went deep on Sunday to tie him for the most home runs in history by a player born in Colorado (85). He also pushed his average back up above .200 on the season.

Carlos Quentin got three starts at DH in the Interleague games over the weekend and may be ready for full-time duty in the outfield. Despite just two hits on the weekend, he is still hitting .348 over his last 10 games.

Cameron Maybin was out of the lineup Sunday with a calf injury and Tommy Medica left on Sunday with a quad strain. Both are day-to-day.

Pirates: Reigning league MVP Andrew McCutchen is having another solid season, leading the NL in walks (42) and third in on-base percentage (.427). The center fielder has also stolen seven bases without getting caught.

Second baseman Neil Walker and third baseman Pedro Alvarez each have 10 homers on the season, but Walker had just one hit over the weekend and Alvarez is batting just .223 on the season.

Why go: Taco Tuesday is also a First Responder Salute. Wednesday’s getaway day afternoon start is a perfect time to take the afternoon off and catch a game, but your boss didn’t hear that here.

Coming up: The Washington Nationals come to town for what’s sure to be a festive atmosphere this weekend. Friday is the team’s second Beerfest of the season. Kegs are tapped in Park in the Park at 5 p.m. Fans get Padres beach towels on Saturday.

Proposed Law Could Limit Gun Purchases

In response to the deadly massacre in Isla Vista, Sen. Barbara Boxer said she plans to propose new gun control legislation that would give families a way to prevent relatives from obtaining guns if their mental health poses a threat.

Boxer’s plan includes a provision that allows a family to go to court to obtain a temporary restraining order to prevent someone from buying a gun if there is immediate cause to be concerned.

The "Pause For Safety Act" would also allow police to temporarily confiscate any firearms the person may already own.

“It is haunting that the family of the gunman who committed this massacre in Isla Vista was desperate to stop a tragedy, and yet they lacked the tools to do so,” Boxer said in a statement. “My bill would give families and associates who fear someone close to them could commit violence new tools to help prevent these tragedies.”

On May 23, 22-year-old Elliot Rodger drove through the streets of the small college town near Santa Barbara and shot at bystanders. Three people were shot and killed before Rodger died apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Prior to the shooting spree, Rodger also stabbed three men to death in his apartment. His family had been concerned with his mental state in recent weeks, along with a number of "disturbing" videos he posted on Facebook, and asked law enforcement to check in on him.

Deputies who checked on Rodger said he was polite and did not appear to be a threat.

Similar legislation was introduced in the California Legislature last week, co-sponsored by Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, Assemblyman Das Williams, D-Santa Barbara, and Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson, D-Santa Barbara.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said Monday he supports the proposed legislation, and said a person’s mental health history should play a part in the steps to obtaining a gun.

“I certainly support it. And it doesn’t take away anybody’s right to own a gun, it just says we’re going to make sure the guns don’t wind up in the wrong hands,” he said.

FBI, Hazmat Search Calif. Building

The San Francisco media consultant at the center of a FBI manhunt for allegedly possessing explosive materials is no longer considered an "immediate threat," two sources told NBC News Monday, hours after an apparent suicide note and Twitter posting from the man's account appeared online.

The FBI has been looking for Ryan Kelly Chamberlain II, 42, since Saturday, when sources said FBI officials discovered explosives and a chemical that can be deadly in his Russian Hill apartment on Polk Street.

While officials earlier called him "armed and dangerous," on Monday, two sources familiar with the investigation told NBC News that at this point, they don’t believe that Chamberlain, a social media expert and well-known political consultant, presents an immediate threat to public safety.

On Monday, a message posted to a Twitter account carrying Chamberlain's name said "nothing they're reporting is true."

An apparent suicide note titled “Goodbye” was also posted to an iCloud account. The source of both messages could not be independently verified by NBC Bay Area and the FBI declined to comment on the three-page letter, timed to go out on Monday through the social media management system Hootsuite.

Chamberlain is a social media expert and a well-known political consultant.

Various media outlets, including SF Weekly, said the note was sent out on Facebook. But by noon on Monday, that note was not on Chamberlain's Facebook page, though several posters were referencing it and sending out the iCloud link.

The note talks about Chamberlain's depression, his mother, whom he called a "religious addict," and a time in 2003 when he was "left out" of getting any credit for helping Calif. Lt. Gov Gavin Newsom win his San Francisco mayoral seat in 2003.

The letter also discussed his two needs in life: "A person and a purpose." "All I ever wanted was someone to be madly in love with," the letter states. "Everyone wants that. Lots of people get it. But it always eluded me."

The letter states that if anyone was reading the note, which he said was posted on Hootsuite delay, "that means we probably don't know each other anymore, and I owe everyone an explanation.

In an abundance of caution, the two sources told NBC News that the FBI issued a nationwide alert to federal, state and local law enforcement to make sure officers are aware of and take a "defensive posture" in dealing with Chamberlain given the explosive materials that were recovered from his San Francisco residence on Saturday.

In addition, the sources told NBC News that Chamberlain has family in multiple states so they wanted to cast a broad net. The bet is that he is likely still in Northern California.

Trying to dispell some rumors, FBI spokesman Peter Lee on Sunday said agents did not find any ricin or other chemical or biological threats in the residence. But, Lee said, "He did possess explosives at his residence."

The FBI also provided a photo of him.

Chamberlain, a Bay Area native, attended Iowa State University before embarking on a career as a music journalist in Des Moines, according to his online resume.  The 2014 Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon saw new records for time and age shattered by one runner.

At 91 years old, Harriette Thompson has become the oldest woman to complete the Southern California race – her 15th time running it. That made her the second oldest marathon runner in U.S. history.

With a time of 7 hours, 7 minutes and 42 seconds, she also broke the U.S. record for the fastest marathon run in the 90-94 age group.

The previous record was held by a 90-year-old runner in Portland, Oregon, who ran a marathon in 8:53:08, according to U.S.A. Track & Field.

But a brief chat with Thompson reveals her story outpaces even her record-breaking running.

The North Carolina resident is a cancer survivor, most recently battling squamous cell carcinoma on her legs, Runners World reports.

“I’m having radiation on my legs. I just had nine radiation treatments, and they’re being healed now,” she said before Sunday’s race.

Treatments and hospitalizations forced her to skip last year’s Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon, but she came back this year with a new spring in her step. Before the race, she said she felt fine, though one leg was giving her a bit of trouble.

Through her runs, Thompson helps to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training. The team’s campaign director told the Charlotte Observer Thompson’s efforts have generated more than $90,000 for the society.

The cause is close to her heart because everyone in her family had died from leukemia or some form of cancer, she told NBC 7.

Recently, she lost her 99-year-old brother to lymphoma, so keeping up her own health is one of her main motivations to run.

In previous races, Thompson has trained with a team, but this year, she had a hard time keeping up with them – understandable, since they are a group of 20 year olds.

Instead, she put together her own routine.

“I try to run around the block, and I do a few 5Ks,” said Thompson. “I think the most I’ve done this year is an 8K, so it’s sort of a lot to ask to jump from that to 26.”

But jump she did, running with her son to help keep her going. Her favorite part of a marathon?

“Oh, my favorite part’s at the end when I get over that finish line! That’s the best part,” she said.

However, there’s more to this race that has kept her coming back for 15 years. The Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego is the first marathon she ever ran, making her debut at the age of 76, according to the Charlotte Observer.

“The city is wonderful, the people are wonderful, the scenery, the weather – everything’s great. And it’s not terribly hilly, so I can’t imagine doing any other one,” said Thompson.

But this year, she did not anticipate all the media attention. When told that she was an inspiration to others, the humble runner responded, “That’s wonderful if that’s true. That’s a benefit I didn’t expect.”

The 91-year-old took some time before the race to share some wisdom for those beyond the marathon course.

"I guess I could say it's never too late, and you feel wonderful if you -- I'm sure that if you exercise, you certainly know the benefits of it," she said.

Friends Fight to Keep Unsolved Murder Case Alive

Friends of a couple brutally murdered five years ago say they won’t stop fighting until the killer is brought to justice.

On May 7, 2009, Barry and Carol Sandberg were killed inside their Bay Park home. Five years later, no arrests have been made.

“These people were in the safety of their own home. They were living a great life, and somebody came and ended it all. Somebody came and stole their Harley Davidson and robbed them blind and murdered them, and nothing's been done about it,” said Jerene Gorrell, Carol’s best friend.

"You don't imagine someone that you love could be killed so violently, and you can't say goodbye," she said.

On Sunday, dozens of motorcyclists rode from Mt. Soledad to San Diego Harley Davidson. They do it every year, hoping to keep the couple’s memory alive.

"It's hard. It's harder each year. Last year, I couldn't come because it was too emotional,” Gorrell said.

Gorrell was the one who made the call to police, who then discovered her friends’ dead bodies.

Although frustrated that no arrests have been made, friends of the Sandbergs say they won’t lose hope. They say they’ll ride every year until the killer is behind bars.

“Five years is a long time, but somebody's talked to somebody said something to somebody, and all you have to do is call in," Gorrell said.

There is currently a $51,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest in the case. Anyone with information should contact the San Diego Police Department Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.

According to police, Barry had a criminal record and multiple civil lawsuits filed against him. However, friends said he had turned his life around and was on the right track at the time of the slayings.

Jack-Knifed Big Rig Closes I-15 Lanes

Commuters heading southbound out of Escondido on Interstate 15 were faced with serious delays early Monday after a big rig filled with cookie dough jackknifed near the State Route 56 interchange.

Traffic was backed up for miles after the crash around 5 a.m. Several hours later, traffic was still at a crawl from north of Escondido to the I-15/SR-56 interchange.

HOV lanes were not affected. Those lanes were opened to all traffic - not just carpool vehicles -  to help people get around the Sig Alert. CHP and Caltrans later opened an additional HOV lane to help relieve the congestion.

The Carmel Mountain Road on-ramp to I-15 was opened before 7 a.m.

An alternate route would be heading south on Carmel Mountain Road but expect delays.

The driver of the truck was injured and was sent to a nearby hospital for treatment. No details were given on the extent of his injuries.

Three or four tow trucks were called to help right the large truck and clear the lanes.

CHP officers and firefighters were still on scene as of 8:30 a.m. There has been no estimated time given for the reopening of all lanes.

Hazmat crews were called to the crash scene but officials say there were no hazardous materials released in the crash.
