Padres-Indians Preview

$
0
0

What’s worse than losing your first two series’ and starting the season 2-4? How about a trip to Cleveland in early April?

That’s what the Padres get after avoiding a sweep to the hands of the Miami Marlins on Sunday afternoon. Now they play three at the Indians (3-3) in their first interleague action of the year.

Things could be worse: It's supposed to rain this week, but at least it will be in the 40s in the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We’ll see if the Padres’ lineup continues to be one-hit wonders. Let’s take a look inside the series.

When they play: The teams take the field at 7:05 Eastern time (4 p.m. for us) on Monday and Tuesday, followed by an afternoon (or morning) tilt at noon (9 a.m.) on Thursday.

What’s at stake: More than anything the Padres want to win a series for psychological value. They also don’t want to lose too much sight of the division-leading Giants, who are off to a hot start (5-2). This is the only time the Friars and Tribe will see each other this season.

Who is pitching: It’s a battle of the back end of the rotations as neither team will be throwing their aces. We get to see Robbie Erlin make his first start of the season for the Padres on Monday. He threw 2/3 of an inning in relief against the Dodgers. The lefty battles Corey Kluber (0-1, 13.50 ERA), who got roughed up in his season debut against the Oakland A’s.

On Tuesday, Tyson Ross (0-1, 5.40) tries to get on track against Zach McAllister (0-0, 6.75).

On Wednesday, Eric Stults (0-1, 11.25) will try to put a dreadful start against LA behind him as he squares off against Danny Salazar (0-0, 3.18).

Who to watch: The Padres get their first chance to use a designated hitter, although with the way this lineup has been swinging, maybe they just want to let the pitcher hit. No regular starter is hitting above .300. Will Venable or Chris Denorfia will most likely flip between right field and DH for the series. Or maybe one of the three catchers will get the call. Nick Hundley and Yasmani Grandal each have three hits each in limited action.

Everth Cabrera has probably been the hottest at the plate with five hits in his last four games. Jedd Gyorko finally got off the schnide with a pair of hits against Miami.

For the Indians, Michael Brantley has been red-hot, hitting .375 with 6 RBIs. Jan Gomes hit a pair of homers over the weekend against Minnesota, but those account for half of his hits on the season.

Homeward bound: The Friars get the heck out of the Midwest and return to Petco Park for a 10-game homestand. It starts Friday with three games against the Detroit Tigers, followed by four games against Colorado Rockies and a three-game set with the San Francisco Giants.

"Mini Heat Wave" Brings Beach Weather

It may be difficult to focus on work or school with the warm, sunny weather this week.

Temperatures will run several degrees above average for San Diego County.

Residents along the coast will see temperatures reaching 80 degrees at the beaches, and those living inland may see temps reaching into the 90s according to NBC 7 Meteorologist Jodi Kodesh.

“We are going to be in for a mini heat wave Monday and Tuesday,” Kodesh said.

Most of the county is normally seeing temperatures near the upper 60s this time of year, she added.

The high pressure system will bring the desert heat and some winds for the next few days.

Temperatures will start to dip Thursday.

San Diego Fire-Rescue crews responded to an emergency on Cowles Mountain Monday morning.

Just after 11 a.m., they received a call about an injured hiker about halfway up the trail.

Aerial pictures showed crews treating the hiker for what appeared to be a leg injury. The patient was then lifted into a medical helicopter.

The helicopter landed nearby, and the hiker was taken to an ambulance in a stretcher.

There is no word on the extent of the hiker’s injury, but the person appeared to be alert.

The Cowles Mountain Trail is located within Mission Trails Regional Park.

Ft. Hood Gunman Requested Leave

The soldier who opened fire at Fort Hood last Wednesday, killing three fellow soldiers and wounding another 16, had been involved in an argument about his request for leave just minutes before his deadly rampage, Army investigators said Monday.

Chris Grey, spokesman for the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command, also provided a timeline for the mass shooting that killed SFC Daniel Michael Ferguson, of Mulberry, Fla., SSG Carlos Alberto Lazaney Rodriguez, of Aquadilla, Puerto Rico, and Sgt. Timothy Owens, of Effingham, Ill.

During his shooting spree, Lopez drove from one area to another at the Army post, covering the equivalent of two city blocks and firing randomly at soldiers, Grey said.

Grey first confirmed that "alleged shooter, Spc. Ivan Lopez, was involved in a verbal altercation concerning his request for leave and the processing of that request at his unit's administrative office."

Grey went on to outline the sequence of shootings at a half-dozen locations that left three dead and 16 injured.

The shooting began after a verbal altercation took place at Building 39001, located at 72nd Street and Tank Destroyer Boulevard.

"Within minutes of the altercation, the subject brandished a .45-caliber, semi-automatic handgun and fired multiple rounds killing one soldier and wounding 10 additional soldiers," Grey said. "The deceased soldier and at least one of the wounded soldiers had been involved in the verbal altercation with the subject prior to the shooting."

Lopez then left Building 39001 by the south door and got into his car. According to witnesses, Lopez drove west through a parking lot to 73rd Street where he turned north and very slowly drove northbound in the southbound lane, witnesses said.

Along the way, he fired from his moving vehicle at two soldiers who were standing behind Building 40001, wounding one of them.

He then turned left onto Motor Pool Road and pulled into the parking lot at Building 40027.

CID said Lopez exited his vehicle and entered the building where he was assigned and worked, his unit's motor pool office and vehicle bay area. Once inside, investigators said he fatally shot a soldier working in a motor pool office before moving to the motor pool vehicle bay area where he would shoot and wound two others, Grey said.

Lopez then returned to his vehicle and drove east on Motor Pool Road toward 73rd Street. While driving east, he fired on a private vehicle occupied by two soldiers, injuring the passenger.

He then turned north and then east into the parking lot of a Medical Brigade Building 33026. CID said he fired on and wounded a soldier walking outside of the building before exiting his vehicle and entering the building. Once inside, he allegedly shot and killed an on-duty soldier at the entrance desk before wounding another.

Lopez then exited the medical brigade, got back into his vehicle and traveled south on 72nd Street.

"At this point, we do not know why he entered that building and we may never know why," Grey said.

From 72nd Street, Lopez and turned east into the parking lot for Building 39002, which is directly behind Building 39001 where the shooting began only minutes before.

CID said Lopez then exited his vehicle and walked east through a parking lot where he was confronted by a Fort Hood Military Police Officer. After a verbal exchange, the MP fired one round toward Lopez, but missed. Lopez then pulled out his weapon, put it to his head and committed suicide, officials said.

Grey said the duration of the shooting from the first 911 call to the notification that the shooter was down was about eight minutes in length.

CID officials said there have collected 235 pieces of evidence, including spent casings in Lopez's vehicle and at various buildings around the post.

Grey said the alleged shooter fired an estimated 35 rounds of .45-caliber ammunition during the rampage.

Officials stress that there is still no evidence of any connection to any terrorist or extremist group, though that has not definitively been ruled out. Additionally, officials have not revealed any definitive motive for the shooting.

Grey said an examination of Lopez's background reveals no criminal history or criminal activity.  Previously, Lt. Gen. Mark Milley, the commanding general at Fort Hood, said Lopez was being evaluated for post-traumatic stress disorder, but had not yet been diagnosed with the PTSD.  Lopez's father, in a statement released from his native Puerto Rico on Friday, said of his son, "he must not have been in his right mind."

Fort Hood officials are planning a memorial service for the victims of the shooting at 2 p.m. Wednesday. President Barack Obama and other dignitaries are expected to attend.

As of Monday afternoon, all but three of the injured have been discharged from Temple-area hospitals. The three who remain hospitalized at Baylor Scott & White in Temple are in fair condition and expected to remain in the hospital for several more days.

Burns Drugs Is Closing

A familiar fixture in La Jolla is closing its doors after decades in business.

Burns Drugs, one of La Jolla's oldest independently-owned retail stores, will close on April 15.

The pharmacy is known for its customer service and for its staff who have worked with the business for years.

Resident Bob Salkin said he was sick about the news.

“I think my wife will cry, really,” Salkin said.

The store’s owner is retiring and has agreed to transfer prescriptions to the CVS pharmacy on Eads Avenue, according to The La Jolla Light.

The newspaper reports that the full-time staffers at Burns Drugs will be offered positions at CVS.

Gail Baccaglini has been a customer there since 1950.

She was horrified about the news because she sees the closure of the independently-owned drug store as a sign of a change in The Village where she enjoys having a relationship with business owners and staff.

“Burns is very symbolic of that,” she said. “I find it disappointing. I find it worrisome for La Jolla.”

For Salkin, finding a replacement pharmacy will be difficult.

“They deliver to our house. They’re responsive. They’re fantastic. They’re like family,” he said.

Even though prescriptions won’t be filled beyond next week, the store will stay open until May while it sells off its remaining inventory.

Boat with Ton of Pot Washes Ashore

A boat loaded with bundles of marijuana -- possibly more than one ton -- washed ashore Monday morning on the Southern California coast.

The 30-foot boat, an open fishing boat with outboard power, was discovered near the Ventura and Los Angeles county line near Leo Carrillo State Park, about 10 miles west of Malibu. Authorities could not confirm the weight of the cargo, but estimated it weighed about one ton after viewing the boat.

One person was detained at the beach. A helicopter crew did not locate anyone in the water, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The boat was found at about 8 a.m.

The boat is the latest drug-smuggling vessel found along the shoreline northwest of Los Angeles. In September, more than 2,000 pounds of marijuana were seized and 18 people were arrested after members of the California National Guard spotted a panga boat near Arroyo Quernada Beach in Santa Barbara County. Authorities later stopped a truck that was involved in the smuggling scheme.

An estimated $4 million worth of marijuana wrapped in bundles washed ashore near Santa Barbara in March 2013. A 30-foot panga boat with about 20 fuel containers was found nearby.

In December 2012, a U.S. Coast Guardsman was killed when he was thrown from a boat that was rammed by a panga boat under investigation for smuggling off the Southern California coast. Drugs onboard the panga were seized and two smuggling suspects were taken into custody.

The U.S. Coast Guard seized 81,000 pounds of marijuana last year, down from 124,500 in 2012.

Military police responded to the report of a suspicious vehicle at Naval Base San Diego Monday morning.

Officials evacuated an area near the commissary and NEX for a suspicious vehicle just after 6:30 a.m.

NBC 7 has learned the vehicle was found right next to the base package store, right across the street from commissary.

A K9 team was brought out and detected residue of a possible explosive. Officials then called in an Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit from Coronado.

After several hours, EOD cleared the vehicle and reported that they had found no bombs.

The two affected gates in the area of 32nd and Main, Harbor Drive and 28th were closed for several hours while proper procedures were followed officials said.

All gates to the base were reopened by 11:30 a.m.

The owner of the vehicle was identified as a sailor. Officials detained and questioned the person after the vehicle was searched.

The base social media accounts initially alerted personnel that the Commissary and NEX have been secured.

Store managers were hoping to open doors by noon.

Flipped-Over Smart Cars

Someone's been vandalizing compact Smart cars in San Francisco, flipping the tiny vehicles on their front and rear ends in the city's streets.

NBC Bay Area found four of the targeted Smart cars between Sunday night and Monday morning. Two were found in the Bernal Heights neighborhood on Anderson Street, and another was found a bit south on Sweeny and Bowdoin streets, closer to the Portola district. They were either sitting on their headlights, rear bumpers high in the air, or vice versa.

A fourth Smart car -- a small white one with a faded "Obama-Biden" bumper sticker -- was discovered Monday about 9 a.m. at Coso and Prospect avenues between the Mission District and Bernal Heights. Shelley Gallivan was babysitting her friend's Smart car after it was left to her by her late father, and was shocked to find it flipped on its right side.

"Whoever is doing this just has misdirected anger," Gallivan said.

San Francisco Police Officer Gordon Shyy said the suspects are still at large and will face felony vandalism charges if they are caught. Police do have an eye witness account to work from.

Brandon Michael was out having a cigarette about 1 a.m. Monday when he spotted about six to eight people wearing hooded sweatshirts flip over the cars.

"They looked like they were up to no good," Michael said. "And sure enough, they huddled around it and lifted it up."

And the vandalized cars? Michael said they reminded him of little dogs: "They look like they are dachshunds sitting up on their hind legs."

Smart car representatives did not respond immediately for comment.

Neighbors were puzzled at the odd sight. Smart cars are a mainstay for many in San Francisco, where parking is tight and drivers search for eco-friendly ways to get around.

"I think it's a bunch of pranks," Dan Gomez said. "I don't know, it sounds kind of weird. I don't know why you would want to do that."

Smart Automobile is headquartered in Boblingen, Germany, and has its primary assembly plant in Hambach, France.  The idea for the car was hatched in early 1990s when Nicholas Hayek, the inventor of the Swatch watch, approached Mercedes-Benz to realize his vision of an "ultra-urban" car, according to the company website. The first Smart car came to the United States - specifically Manhattan -  in 2008.

The cars start at about $13,000 and the company brands its cars with a lower case "s."

Tipping over large, heavy objects just for kicks is nothing new. High schoolers, football teams and fraternities have supposedly been tipping cows in pastures for years, and picking up VW bugs and moving them elsewhere was a minor fad back in the 1960s and 1970s.

The exact motives behind the vandalism are unclear. The diminutive cars are smaller and lighter than most vehicles. A Smart car weighs about 1,500 pounds; a Ford Focus S Sedan weighs close to 3,000 pounds, and a Hummer clocks in at 8,600 pounds -- definitely a heft that would pose a flipping challenge.

The VoiceofVancouver showed a video of people flipping over a Smart car in 2011 during a citywide riot, as did another YouTube user who showed people smashing the high-tech mini-car. In 2009, the Toronto Star wrote a piece, "Tipping Smart cars the latest prank trend," comparing the act of tipping over the pint-size vehicles as the modern-day equivalent of tipping over cows.

The Smart car website has a forum with frustrated car owners discussing the pricey prank.

And a parody Facebook page was set up called "Smart Car Tipping" by a creator who does not "practice, promote or condone Smart Car Tipping."

One website, however, seemed to be cheering on the tipping. TotalFratMove.com called the Smart car tippers "heroes" and described the cars as "teensy little wheeled boxes."

NYC Cronut Bakery Cleared to Reopen After "Mouse Infestation"

Cronut fans can resume their quest for the famed pastry, as the Dominique Ansel Bakery in SoHo was cleared to reopen Monday afternoon after being shut down for a "severe mouse infestation."

The bakery says it's opening its doors at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

The shop was closed Friday after the Health Department began investigating a YouTube video showing a mouse scurrying across the floor of the Spring Street store.

The health department said inspectors found several hundred mouse droppings at the store that day.

The bakery passed its reopening inspection on Monday, a spokesman for the Health Department said.

In a message posted on its Facebook page, the bakery said: "We are deeply sorry for any disappointment that we may have caused you. Taking this opportunity, we have completely fortified our facilities with a full reconstruction and re-cementing, taking every issue seriously in an effort to provide an even more pristine environment for our guests."

It also suggested the YouTube video was a "cruel and sensationalized attack... not framed in the proper context."

The shop has become famous for its croissant-doughnut hybrid and, more recently, the cookie-milk shot creation.

Megachurch Pastor's "Moral Failing"

A popular Fort Lauderdale mega-church pastor has abruptly resigned after confessing to a "moral failing in his life," church officials said Sunday.

Bob Coy, pastor at Calvary Chapel, resigned Thursday, but the announcement was made during a special meeting Sunday night.

Coy is well-known throughout South Florida for his work at the church and through his television and radio shows.

"Pastor Bob will be focusing his full attention on his personal relationship with God and with his family," the church said in a statement Sunday. "The governing board of the church is providing counselors and ministers who will help guide him through the process of full repentance, cleansing and restoration."

Calvary Church is one of the largest churches in South Florida with more than 20,000 members. Coy founded the church in 1985 with his wife, Diane.

The church announced that the media ministry of the Active Word that distributes his Bible teachings through radio, television and digital media was also suspended.

"Trusting in God’s providence, protection, provision and direction, the staff of Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale will continue our mission to "make disciples," through regular services at all campuses and through a myriad of other ministries the church has established over the years," the church's statement said. "A team of assistant pastors already on staff will maintain their usual rotating schedule as teaching pastors for all services."

Student's April Fool's Joke on Teacher Goes Viral

Extra credit belongs to this student who stayed in character throughout a caught-on-camera April Fool's prank that has since gone viral.

The student pranked her macroeconomics teacher, Professor Stephen Barrows, last week at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Mich. At the center of the joke was the teacher's in-class policy: If a student's phone rings, the call must be answered on speakerphone.

Per the policy (and the joke), when the female student's phone rang, she answered. Here's what the class heard:

"Hi, this is Kevin from the Pregnancy Resource Center. Per your request, I am calling to inform you that the test results have come back positive. Congratulations."

A clip of the prank shows the teacher clearly looking concerned at this point. He can be heard telling the student she can turn off the phone.

"There is no need to worry," the caller says. "I know you told us the father is no longer in the picture, but we will be in contact with you throughout this whole process, so don't worry about anything. We provide counseling and other maternity services at no charge."

As the teacher moves to publicly apologize to the student, she plays it cool.

"That's okay," she says. "I've been expecting this, and I already know what I'm going to name the baby. Her first name will be April, and her middle name will be Fools."

The class erupts into laughter, right along with the professor. The prank had since garnered more than 4 million YouTube views by Monday afternoon.

"Sleeper" Shot at Oceanside Marina OIS: Cops

Shots were fired near Oceanside harbor Monday in a deadly altercation involving a police officer called to investigate a man sleeping on a bench. Officials say the so-called "sleeper" was armed with a handgun and the police officer fired his weapon because he felt threatened.

Aerial video shows clothing, shoes and blood stains on the sidewalk in front of a business on North Harbor Drive, west of Interstate 5.

Lt. Leonard Cosby said Oceanside police got a call about a “sleeper” outside the Breakwater Yacht Ltd office just after 9 a.m.

Cosby said residents called reporting a suspicious person in the area.

There was some sort of interaction between the man and the police officer, who has been with the department for 15 years according to Cosby.

After initial contact with the suspect, the officer says the man turned to either sit or stand at which point the officer saw a gun in the suspect's waistband, officials said.

Investigators said that when the suspect reached for the gun, the officer fired his weapon striking the suspect at least three times.

Officials said the police officer opened fire, believing his life was threatened.

Directly after, Cosby said the officer and others started lifesaving efforts.

The man was transported by ambulance to a medical helicopter and was flown to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Officials have not released the man's name but told NBC 7 he was a documented gang member from San Pedro who was in his 20s. His identity will be released once his family is notified.

Cosby said investigators believe the man was on probation although he did not have any outstanding warrants against him.

Given the location and the time of day there were many witnesses to the shooting. Some report hearing three to five gunshots. None saw the incident.

One witness contacted NBC 7 saying he was in a nearby office building when he heard multiple shots. He went to a balcony to check out the noise and saw an officer pointing a gun.

British tourist Linda Clark is visiting Oceanside on vacation. She was sitting on a balcony overlooking the harbor.

"Then we heard the volley of shots," Clark said. "Everyone just came very quickly. The police response was very quick."

Cell phone video obtained by NBC 7 shows emergency personnel attending to a man lying on the ground near the scene of the shooting.

Officials originally said they could not answer if the man fatally injured in the shooting made a threatening move before shots were fired.

A 9mm handgun was found at the scene; however the suspect never fired his weapon, officials said.

The bench is located on a sidewalk outside a business several yards from the marina's edge.

There is a gated area a few feet away that leads to an area where boats are docked.

The officer involved in the shooting has not been identified. He has been placed on administrative leave, according to Cosby.

Check back for updates on this developing story.

Defense Tries to Implicate Teen in Father's Murder Trial

Lawyers for an Iraqi immigrant on trial for his wife’s killing tried to shift the blame to the couple’s daughter Monday in San Diego court.

After a weekend off, the trial of Kassim Al-Himidi continued Monday. The 49-year-old man who lived in El Cajon is accused of killing his wife, Shaima Alawadi, 32, in 2012 after she asked him for a divorce.

But the trial’s focus shifted Monday as defense attorneys tried to cast suspicion on Al-Himidi’s daughter Fatima, 19.

Fatima, who took the stand for the third time, is not accused of murdering her mother, but defense attorneys started asking her tough questions about her possible role in the death.

The teen was asked if she ever thought about having her mother killed so she could continue dating her Chaldean boyfriend – a relationship forbidden by Alawadi.

She answered firmly “No.”

She also testified that she never talked to her boyfriend about “getting rid” of her mother so they could stay together.

Fatima said her mother was a higher priority in her life than her boyfriend. She told the court that she was so hurt that her relationship with a non-Muslim was causing her mother so much grief that she broke up with him.

While her parents did have a bad relationship, Fatima said, she did not think Al-Himidi was her mother’s killer at first. But now, she thinks her father is guilty, she said.

On March 21, 2012, Fatima found her mother brutally beaten and lying in a pool of blood in the family’s dining room at their rented El Cajon home.

Alawadi died a few days later from severe head trauma.

A threatening note found at the crime scene -- which read “This is my country, go back to yours, terrorist” – initially led investigators to consider her killing a hate crime, sending shock waves across the country.

However, El Cajon police later determined the killing was an isolated incident of domestic violence, not a hate crime.

Soon after, Al-Himidi was arrested and charged with his wife’s death.

If convicted, he faces 26 years to life in prison.

Family Likely Won't Pay for Sea Rescue: Coast Guard Official

A San Diego family will most likely not have to pay for the extensive sea rescue of their sick 1-year-old daughter, a U.S. Coast Guard official said Monday.

The California Air National Guard, U.S. Navy and Coast Guard coordinated rescue efforts to reach the Kaufman family about 900 nautical miles from the coast of Mexico.

And parents Eric and Charlotte Kaufman will not have to foot the bill -- at least as far as the Coast Guard is concerned.

"The Coast Guard does not charge for search and rescue operations," said Coast Guard Lt. Anna Dixon in a statement. "We don’t want people in trouble at sea to hesitate to call for help for fear they’ll be charged for assistance. Mariners assisting one another at sea is both a time-honored tradition and a requirement of the Safety of Life at Sea Convention of the International Maritime Organization."

Dixon said neither the Navy nor the California Air National Guard have indicated plans to seek repayment for their rescue efforts.

On Thursday, 1-year-old Lyra Kaufman fell seriously ill just as the family’s boat, the Rebel Heart, lost its communication and steering abilities.

Thursday night, the California Air National Guard dropped four pararescuemen from a plane into the ocean. Those men climbed aboard the Rebel Heart to stabilize Lyra.

Navy frigate USS Vandegrift reached the boat two days later, and Sunday morning, the Kaufmans boarded the rescue ship.

Now Lyra, her parents and her 3-year-old sister Cora are expected to fly via helicopter back to San Diego by Wednesday so Lyra can get further treatment.

With so many moving parts, California Military Department Capt. Will Martin said officials do not have a cost estimate since the mission is still incomplete.

“Also, any cost estimate we could provide would not reflect the mission’s total cost, as the Navy and Coast Guard incurred costs as well,” wrote Martin in an emailed statement Monday.

A cost tally won’t be finished until they do an “after-action-review.”

Officer Wounded in Shooting at LAPD Station

An officer shot multiple times by a gunman at a Los Angeles Police Department station remained hospitalized and was in "great spirits" Tuesday as authorities released more details about the shooting.

Police confirmed early Tuesday that the officer was not wearing a protective vest when he was shot seven times by a man Monday night who entered the LAPD's West Traffic Division station in the Mid-City area. Initial reports indicated he was wearing the vest, but investigators later determined that was not the case.

Two desk officers, including the one who was hit, returned fire in the lobby and wounded the gunman, police said.

The officer, a seven-year veteran of the LAPD, was shot seven times, officials said. He was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he was expected to survive.

"He is in great spirits," LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said outside the hospital. "Remarkable young man. Very, very lucky."

The gunman was also taken to Cedars-Sinai in critical condition, police said.

"Our interview with the officer determined that he was not wearing that vest, making this even more miraculous that he was not killed," said LAPD Sgt. Barry Montgomery.

Details about why the gunman fired were not immediately available. LAPD Cmdr. Dennis Kato
said the gunman had an unspecificied complaint. The gunman had parked in a bank parking lot and walked into the lobby.

The station has no metal detector in the lobby.

The shooter's semi-automatic pistol was recovered inside the lobby, police said.

A bomb squad team checked a vehicle believed to be connected to the gunman, officials said.

"Luckily our officers reacted the way they were trained to and were wearing the proper body armor, and I think that’s why they’re going to survive this attack," Kato said Monday night.

Police said a meeting was underway in a community room at the station at the time of the shooting. No one was hurt. The people who attended were being questioned, police said.

Both directions of Venice Boulevard, between La Brea Avenue and Rimpau Boulevard, were shut down for an investigation, police said in a tweet.

Tributes, meanwhile, began pouring in for the officer on Twitter.

"Prayers to the injured Officer-LAPD," Wilshire Division officers tweeted. "This will be a lengthy investigation thru the night. Please don't attempt to drive in the area."

"Get well brother," tweeted Honolulu Police Officer Walter Gouveia. "Our prayers are with you."

A gunman ambushed LAPD detectives last year outside the Wilshire station, the scene of Monday's shooting.

Ban on "Cars for Sale" on City Streets?

The San Diego City Council will meet this afternoon to consider a ban on cars parked for sale on streets.

If this ordinance is passed, it could bring the change to University Avenue, between 38th Street and Marlborough Avenue in City Heights and Southeast San Diego on Marmil Way between Marmil Avenue and Towanda Drive.

This makes City Heights residents and businesses more than happy, considering they’ve been pushing for the ban for years. It also means more parking on their streets.

On Monday alone, there were five cars for sale on University Avenue taking up an entire block of parking. But this isn’t the only thing car owners are doing now.

“They even go as far as washing them while they’re there,” Crystal Jackson, of Video Electronics on University Avenue, told NBC 7.

“It deters customers from coming because if they have to park five to six blocks away because they don’t have any parking. It affects our business extremely negatively,” Jackson said.

The store has contacted the owners of the “for sale” cars, but they only move the cars temporarily.

Different parts of the county already have no parking signs for people selling their cars.

Some City Heights residents who spoke to NBC 7 said they are more than eager for the ban.

“It prevents people from parking on University and also it’s an eye sore to see,” Steve Jones, a City Heights resident, said. “It looks like a car sales lot if you have four or five cars on the street. I don’t think it’s great for the neighborhood at all.”

The city says they have the funding to pay for the no parking signs which cost about $900.
