Two men were hospitalized -- one with life-threatening wounds -- Monday night after a double stabbing in National City, according to police.

The stabbings occurred around 7:30 p.m. near Plaza Boulevard and B Avenue.

The victim with severe wounds was taken into surgery at the UCSD Medical Center. The second victim was also hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police told NBC 7 they did recover some weapons at the scene. They are not saying if the victims were fighting each other or if they are both victims of a third person.

National City Police are investigating. No arrests have been made.

Marine KIA Honored 70 Years Later

Seventy years after being killed in action during the 1944 invasion of Guam, a Central California Marine has received a funeral with full military honors.

The Fresno Bee says that two years after the war, Cpl. Thomas Jefferson Johnson got a quiet burial in his hometown of Chowchilla -- with no bugle playing "Taps," no color guard, no presentation of the flag.

The Marine's son Kevin Johnson, now 75 and a military veteran, says it bothered him his whole life that his father never received proper military honors.

Johnson was in attendance Monday as a team of guard members gathered at the Chowchilla Cemetery for the long overdue funeral.

The newspaper says Johnson fought back tears while standing over his father's grave as his colleagues with the American Veterans Post 56 in Tulare presented him with a folded flag.

Documents Detail Priest Abuse

UPDATE: Chicago Archdiocesan Files Reveal Extent of Sex Abuse Cover-Up

The attorneys representing the sex abuse victims of 30 Chicago priests have released the internal files showing years of cover-up and the transfer of abusive priests to new parishes.

The documents include letters from Cardinals Joseph Bernardin and Francis George to abusing priests as well as internal memos from those bishops in charge. The 6,000 documents made public Tuesday morning are part of an eight year long negotiated settlement between the Archdiocese and the attorneys for the victims.

While NBC Chicago first broke the abuse story in 1990 and has followed it closely, these reports will reveal for the first time what the Archdiocese knew, when they knew it and how the information was concealed from parishioners.

The documents, released by AndersonAdvocates.com, will also be found at BishopAccountability.org.

"Publishing for all to read the actual records of these crimes raises transparency to a new level," George wrote in a letter distributed to parishes earlier this month. "It will be helpful, we pray, for some, but painful for many."

(Editor's Note: Many of the details included in the previously-secret documents are graphic in nature. Readers should consider whether they want to review such material.)

The files focus on the victims represented by attorneys Jeff Anderson and Mark Pearlman. Of the 30 priests referenced, 14 are dead. The Archdiocese said it is beginning to discuss how to release the files of all of the priests. However the files of any priests or brothers accused of abuse from religious orders must come through their specific order.

First Lady Michelle Obama teamed up with the Miami Heat to create a fun YouTube video about healthy eating.

Head Coach Erik Spoelstra along with star players Dwyane Wade and Ray Allen start the video off by talking about drinking water and eating right. But the real action occurs when the first lady and Chris Bosh videobomb the interview by munching on apples and drinking water in the background. Then Michelle Obama slam dunks a basketball using a hoop held up by LeBron James.

The video ends with Michelle Obama sitting on a couch at the White House flanked by the NBA stars, eating more apples.

Michelle Obama's Let's Move! organization filmed the video when the Miami Heat visited the White House last week for winning their second NBA championship in a row. The first lady posted the video to Twitter on Tuesday.

Promise Neighborhood Data Released

What can $60 million do for just 6,700 residents in a small community where education has not traditionally been a high priority?

That experiment is playing out in the South Bay where an Obama administration program called "Promise Neighborhoods" is one of only 12 in the nation.

Data on the first year places Chula Vista's Promise Neighborhood of Castle Park among the top five performing sites.

Among some of the information released Monday and exclusively to NBC 7, the partnership has collected 667 volunteers and reached out to 6,708 community members - more than live in the actual catchment area.

So far, 16 kids have received early acceptance letters from colleges such as UC Berkeley and UCLA. Attendance, a problem at many of the schools, has increased. API scores have tipped over an average 800 score and 24 parents have successfully graduated from Universidad de Padres-- a parenting workshop.

The money, which amounts to $9,000 per person living in the half of a square-mile Castle Park neighborhood, is being spent on hiring and training 80 new staff members and two new portable buildings, as well.

For high school senior Robert Corrales, it means free tutoring after-school at Hilltop High School.

"My mom-- she is in college herself-- so it's kind of left for me to make sure I take care of my responsibilities and make sure my brother takes care of himself, too," Corrales said. He said before the program, kids would just hang out after class.

The main focus of the Promise Neighborhood effort is to get families to make education a priority and college the end result.

In the quiet, neatly-kept neighborhood, 67 percent of adults have not even graduated high school. The effort is aimed at embracing families as a whole and instilling an education focus at an early age.

Through a wellness program with a local hospital, three families found out their child needed eye glasses, before it began affecting their academic performance.

"Judge us not based on what we say, but judge us based on our outcomes. And our outcomes are now being released in year one and again everything is data-driven, everything is tracked," said Mauricio Torre, who is overseeing the grant administration. "We're more than happy to share that with the whole community."

A man was taken into police custody following a SWAT action in a La Costa neighborhood early Tuesday.

Carlsbad police were called to a home in the community known as La Costa Oaks north of Rancho Santa Fe Road around 10:30 p.m. Monday.

Officials told NBC 7 News the family living at the home at Sitio Bahia and Corte Panorama called 911 to report that a 30-year-old man was behaving erratically and threatening violence.

“Patrol officers secured the perimeter of the house and got the unaffected family members out and then we called the SWAT team to come out and resolve the situation,” said Lt. Jeff Chapman.

Officers initiated a flash bang and entered the home, took the man in custody and transported him to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

No one was injured. No charges have been filed.

Train service into downtown San Diego was delayed after a fatal incident involving a pedestrian at Grape Street.

San Diego Fire Rescue crews were called to the section of track in Little Italy just after 10 a.m.

San Diego police have confirmed a pedestrian was killed in an accident involving an Amtrak train.

Deputies later identified the victim only as a 45-year-old man.

“It seems this was an apparent suicide,” said San Diego County Sheriff's Sgt. Anthony O’Boyle.

North County Transit posted an update to its customers via Twitter alerting them to possible delays because of the police activity.

Since the train was stopped by the incident, traffic was backed up from California Street onto Hawthorn and Grape Streets toward Interstate 5.

The gridlock prompted San Diego police to issue a SigAlert at 10:40 a.m.

Kids Return to School After Threat

On Tuesday morning, Escondido Charter School students will return to campus for the first time since a shooting threat closed school last Friday.

More than 200 parents and students came to the high school Monday night to ask questions and voice concerns, especially because the person who made the threat on the school is still out there.

At the meeting, police and school administrators told the crowd they've done everything possible to make the three charter campuses safe.

“I thought we got a lot out of it. I feel confident that nothing is going to happen and they are handling it well,” parent Denise Gibson said.

Last Friday, the five Escondido charter schools on three campuses were closed. Police say a specific violent threat, including time and location, was made in an anonymous teen chat room.

“It really impacted people in a way that I can't take back,” Escondido Police Lt. Neal Griffin said.

Authorities initially linked the threat to a minor in Escondido. However, they later determined someone else had been impersonating that youth.

Griffin says the person whose name was associated with the threat is as much a victim as anyone.

“Is it a form of cyberbullying? Yeah, I suppose it is,” he said. “It’s a kind of ridiculous identity theft. It's got some of those overtures.”

Griffin says the real person responsible does have a local connection.

The crowd was told to expect a greater police presence and extra staff on Tuesday. Investigators are counting on students to their eyes and ears where police are not.

“They'll take that extra step of maturity, not think of it as ratting them out but theoretically saving lives,” junior Cameron Johnson said.

Parents NBC 7 spoke to left the meeting feeling reassured.

“I can send my son to school, yeah,” parent Nancy Medieros said.

Griffin says this chat room that promises kids anonymous postings may make it harder to get to the person responsible, but not impossible.

Police remain confident the suspect will be caught and prosecuted.

Balboa Park Celebration Plans Delayed by Snags

San Diego's preparations for a year-long tribute to its "Crown Jewel" -- Balboa Park – haven’t exactly been coming together.

There are now questions as to whether the centennial celebration of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, during which the park made its worldwide debut, turns out as grand as planners had hoped.

Balboa Park Celebration, Inc. (BPCI), the centennial's nonprofit promotional firm, cites “a great deal of excellent programming in the pipeline for 2015.”

But according to a U-T San Diego "watchdog" report, deadlines are falling by the wayside.

Corporate sponsors haven't materialized.

Permits aren't issued.

And key players – executives and creative producers -- keep changing.

Last June BPCI unveiled an ambitious vision for the celebration in a splashy promotional video presentation that announced: “On New Year's Eve, 2014, we will welcome the world to an inclusive celebration that underscores our region's diversity."

Production of the various events were to be handled by principals of Los Angeles-based Autonomy LLC, veterans of producing Mexico's independence bi-centennial festivities in 2010.

“Once you get a group of people organized, excited, focused and they put their best foot forward,” Autonomy’s Adam Burke told NBC 7 at the time, “who knows what could happen?"

But Autonomy hasn’t been in the picture since November, having been replaced by another L.A. outfit.

U-T San Diego says corporate sponsorships are lacking, as are a “comprehensive calendar” of events including “365 days of music.”

Plans for traffic and parking management have been delayed.

Is there still time to rally something that'll rival the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, which helped put San Diego on the world map at the time?

And how much would it matter if there isn't?

Interviews with Balboa Park visitors Monday yielded mixed reactions.

"I don't know that it will make a difference for bringing more visitors to the park, because it's already a vacation destination,” said Bankers Hill resident Ron Gaschler. “But I think it should be celebrated and it takes a lot of people to plan such an event. So it's alarming."

Said La Mesa resident Larissa Jones: "Whatever happens would be nice -- just any type of celebration would be cool. But if they're hyping it up like it's going to be something huge and it's not -- maybe they should tone down all their advertising."

"It'd be great to have a celebration,” said Linda Vista resident David Gasaway. “But honestly, just like December Nights, it seems to choke up the park for the locals. So I'm okay either way."

In an email sent to NBC 7 Monday, BPCI spokesman Gerry Braun refers to ex-Mayor Bob Filner as "a de-stabilizing force" in the centennial preparations.

“We expect to report news on funding and sponsorships in 30-90 days," Braun said.

He noted that the 1915 exposition got $1 million in seed money from civic leaders – roughly the level of public funding BPCI has received – “an amount that, if you extrapolate for population and inflation … would be roughly $250 million in today’s dollars.”

White Castle Gets Burger Award

$

From top-tier restaurants that serve foie gras burgers to greasy fast-food chains that dish up mouthwatering patties, our inner burger critic has always judged the American classic by its taste and presentation.

Thanks to Time Magazine’s recent poll of hamburger historians and experts, we can now add "how influential the burger is" to our judging criteria. The list revealed juicy details of which burgers have the largest impact on the burger industry and world.

White Castle took the crown for the "most influential burger of all time," beating iconic burger joints like McDonald's (No. 2), In-N-Out (No. 3) and foodie favorite Shake Shack (No. 7).

White Castle’s palm-sized, square patty originated in Wichita, Kansas, in 1921 and was the “first burger to spawn a fast-food empire,” Time notes. By 1930, the family-owned business had opened 30 locations. Today, White Castle restaurants are located in New York City, the Midwest and upper South.

Time ranked the Burger King Whopper in fifth place, stating that it's the fast-food industry’s first gimmick burger, inspiring competitors to create “deluxe” versions.

At No. 7, Time gave credit to chef Danny Meyer’s ShackBurger for sparking a food frenzy and attracting long lines at New York’s Madison Square Park. The chain has 21 locations in the U.S. (nine of them in New York City) and 13 Shake Shacks internationally.

With a price tag of $325,000, No. 9 is the most expensive burger. The burger is so pricey because it is lab-grown, making it suitable for vegetarians. The meat patty, which looks, smells and tastes like a burger, was grown from cow stem cells by researchers at Maastricht University in the Netherlands.

The Ramen Burger, which consists of a bun made of ramen noodles and a beef patty, landed in the No. 12 spot. Shortly after the cronut crave, the burger drew crowds to Smorgasburg, Brooklyn's outdoor food fair. An official Ramen Burger restaurant has not been opened, but that doesn't stop copycats from making it.

The least influential of the 17 went to the Krusty Burger (No. 17), a "Simpsons" tribute at Universal Studios Orlando.

A man arrested after a pursuit that ended with shots fired at the U.S.-Mexico border will stand trial, a San Diego judge ruled Tuesday.

Carlos Romero was arrested following a dramatic freeway pursuit that closed the border crossing considered the busiest in the world on Jan. 2.

When police tried to pull over the truck Romero was driving, he refused to pull over and instead drove south toward the San Ysidro Port of Entry, officials said.

Once there, the 30-year-old Romero is accused of ramming two patrol cars and a U.S. Customs and Border Protection vehicle in an attempt to avoid arrest.

At a preliminary hearing held inside a San Diego courtroom Tuesday, one of the agents testified Romero revved his engine and was going to hit him with his car so he had no choice but to fire his weapon.

When he was taken into custody on Dairy Mart Road, officials said Romero was injured with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Romero was ordered to stand trial on charges of assault on a peace officer, felony evading and assault with a deadly weapon. He has pleaded not guilty to charges.

Burnt food prompted a fire alarm that cleared San Diego Airport's Terminal 2 Tuesday, officials said.

San Diego Fire Rescue crews were called to Lindbergh Field for a fire alarm around 10:20 a.m. Tuesday.

One traveler told NBC 7 that lights were flashing inside the terminal and an announcement was made regarding the fire alarm.

No one inside the terminal panicked but many appeared to be confused about the incident.

After 10 minutes, authorities told travelers to return to the terminal.

An airline employee told NBC 7 the cause of the fire alarm was burnt popcorn. San Diego Fire Rescue officials described the cause as  burned food.

No one was injured.

Police in the exclusive San Diego neighborhood of Coronado are looking for the suspect in a crime spree that included a hit-and-run crash and a strange man breaking into a home and cooking dinner.

The break-in was discovered after 9 p.m. on G Avenue, just a few blocks from Coronado beach and in the same part of town as the San Diego landmark Hotel del Coronado.

Officials said the resident reported finding the man cooking dinner in the kitchen. The person was able to chase the suspect off.

Then, police said they were called for an attempted break-in at another home one street southwest on Alameda Boulevard and to a vehicle on G Avenue.

Two hours later, a hit-and-run crash involving a stolen car was reported along B Avenue near 10th Street.

Officials said the driver fled the scene, jumping on the roof of a nearby building.

Coronado police believe the suspect in the hit-and-run stole the keys of the car from a home in the 800-block of B Avenue while the residents slept.

There was also an attempted burglary and attempted car theft on B Avenue reported the same evening.

Coronado police are asking for the public’s help to find the suspect in the hit-and-run believed to be connected to the other incidents in the crime spree. A witness described the man as in his late teens or early 20's, white or possibly Hispanic with light skin and dark hair and wearing torn blue jeans, no shirt and only one shoe.

Anyone with information can contact the Coronado Police Department at (619) 522-7350.

The grandson of a National City man struck and killed during his daily walk said he will pray for the man facing charges in the fatal collision.

Tomas Mondares, 89, would spend his morning exercising and praying. Every day he walked by the mortuary where his wife's funeral was held two years ago.

On Monday, Mondares was struck and killed by an oncoming car after it veered onto the sidewalk along E. 8th Street near E Avenue.

The man behind the wheel, Kevin Moore, stopped the vehicle and waited for police. He now faces charges of driving under the influence according to National City police.

Given his daily routine, Mondares was likely on the way home from service at St. Mary's Church according to his grandson who is also named Thomas.

Thomas Mondares visited the scene of the crash later Monday and spoke to NBC 7. He said his grandfather was in the last pew of the church by 7:30 a.m. most mornings.

The two men were always close and Thomas described his grandfather as a devoted Catholic, a man of service and a mentor.

“After coming home from Afghanistan he was there for me,” the younger Mondares said. “He was a strength I drew upon and a strength I was will continue to draw upon even though he’s not here physically.”

Tomas Mondares was going to the Philippines in two days to visit his ancestral home and celebrate his 90th birthday.

He was also planning to check on the chapel he had dedicated to his late wife.

As for the driver charged in his grandfather’s death, Mondares said his grandfather would not want any other harm to come to anyone else.

“We’re not vengeful people. My prayers will go to him and his family and we will work toward forgiveness,” he said.

“This is something he will have to carry with him for the rest of his life.  I hope this serves as a reminder to others not to take things lightly, cherish each moment,” he said.

Moore, 57, was on parole at the time of the accident. Officials said he will face charges of driving while under the influence of drugs.

It looks like there's another athlete who graduated from same charm school as Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman.

Dutch speed skater Sjinkie Knegt was reportedly disqualified from a competition in Germany after he gave Olympic gold medalist Viktor Ahn of Russia a middle finger salute with both hands, according to The Independent.

Ahn beat Knegt, capturing first place in the men's 500 meter final this weekend at the ISU European Short Track Speed Skating Championships, which took place in Dresden.

While Ahn raised his hands with his index fingers in the air to celebrate his win, Knegt was right behind him, flipping the bird with both hands.

The obscene gesture was captured by an Agence France-Presse photographer and the photo is making its round on news sites and social media.

Knegt wasn't the only athlete making headlines this weekend for his display of questionable sportsmanship. The Seahawks' cornerback Richard Sherman went on a rant that was captured on-camera after his team beat the 49ers in the NFC's championship game.

Pet Pot Poisonings Increase

Pet poisonings involving marijuana – specifically, the ingestion of pot via bong water or edibles – are on the rise, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

NBC News reports that, according to the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center division, calls reporting pet poisonings by marijuana have increased by 30 percent since 2009, from 213 calls that year to 320 in 2013.

Dr. Monika Kaelble, medical director of the Pet Emergency and Specialty Care Center in San Diego’s La Mesa community, told NBC 7 San Diego on Tuesday that her practice sees cases of cannibis poisonings quite frequently, at least once per week.

“We certainly do see a lot of marijuana poisoning. I think it’s on the rise because we now have legalization of medical marijuana, and it’s more prevalent,” said Kaelble.

“It’s not something that people think of that much. I don’t think people think their dog is going to get into marijuana but dogs love to eat things, and that’s definitely on the list,” she added.

Kaelble said her practice sees enough cases to spot the symptoms in a pooch suffering from pot poisoning, which usually includes staggering and sensitivity to sounds and lights.

"Most dogs come in kind of drunk-looking, acting very abnormally," she explained. "In most cases the dog has eaten a brownie or baked good. Secondarily, they may eat a stash or joint."

Kaelble said she rarely sees cases involving poisoning from owners purposely blowing secondhand smoke into a dog's face.

"We don't typically see deliberate poisonings, thankfully pet owners love their pets. Usually the pets are getting into something [in these pot poisoning cases]," she explained.

Kaelble said the smaller the dog, the sicker they get from ingesting marijuana.

Treatment at her practice includes giving the four-legged patient IV fkuids to flush out its system or activated charcoal to help bind the drug if vets think the drug is still in the dog's stomach.

"Usually, within 24 to 48 hours, they're back to normal again," she said.

Animal Poison Control Center director Dr. Tina Wismer says dogs, in particular, don’t react the same way as humans to marijuana. While some may become “sedated” or “wobbly,” Wismer told NBC News that some dogs experience agitation and high heart rates, resulting in distress.

“Most dogs become incontinent,” Wismer said. “They stagger around dribbling urine everywhere.”

The ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center says marijuana – namely the Delta-9-THC element in the plant – is toxic to dogs, cats and horses. Signs of pot poisoning in a pet also include prolonged depression, vomiting, lack of coordination, sleepiness, hypersalivation, dilated pupils, low body temperature, seizure, coma, or, even in some rare cases, death.

If a dog experiences soaring blood pressure as a result of pot poisoning and goes without treatment, a dog can go into a coma and die.

Poisoning experts say bong water is one way for pets to ingest the active ingredients in marijuana. They could also eat marijuana leaves or edibles, such as pot brownies or cookies.

Wismer says marijuana butter used to make these baked goods can be especially dangerous to pets who may eat them thinking they may be treats.

“People put weed and a stick of butter in a sauce pan and the fat soluble cannabinoids leech into the butter creating a much higher concentration of THC,” she explained.

Brownies may be twice as dangerous for dogs, too, since chocolate is one of the leading causes of dog poisonings, according to the ASPCA.

Chocolate, a heart and nervous system stimulant in dogs, can cause hyperactivity, vomiting, diarrhea, panting, tremors, seizures and even death in extreme cases.

As marijuana becomes more legally prevalent and people learn of its danger to dogs, Kaelble said she thinks owners will become more astute about hiding their pot away from a pet's reach.

"A lot of it is public awareness of the problem," said Kaelble.

The ASPCA says pet owners who think their dog or pet may have ingested marijuana should contact their local veterinarian or the Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.
