Dangerous Heat Expected in San Diego County

$

0

Warm, muggy weather will send residents of San Diego County looking for a cool place Thursday.

East County will feel the heat with Lakeside above 100 degrees and El Cajon expected to break triple digits.

Get Your Forecast

A southern air flow will bring very humid conditions across the county. Add that with intense heat and it will create dangerously hot conditions.

“With humidity in the mix, it’s not going to allow us to sweat the way we should,” said NBC 7 meteorologist Jodi Kodesh.

The National Weather Service urges those sensitive to heat should take precautions. That includes children, the elderly, others who immune systems may be compromised.

Ways to avoid overheating include drinking plenty of water, staying out of the direct sun, dressing for summer weather, slowing down your activity by exercising or running errands early or after sundown.

You can find air conditioning in one of more than 115 designated cool zones in the county. They include the East County Regional Center in El Cajon and the Lakeside Library. For more information about cool zones call 800-510-2020 and press "6".

Never leave pets or children unattended inside a vehicle at any time. If you see a pet that is in imminent threat of death or injury, call The County Department of County Animal Services emergency number at (619) 236-2341.

We are in for a break from this heatwave. There will be a slight cooling Friday and Saturday with a return of the marine layer and cooler temperatures forecasted for Monday.

Rim Fire Started by Hunter's Illegal Fire: Forest Service

The U.S. Forest Service announced today that the devastating Rim Fire that has been burning near Yosemite for more than two weeks began when a hunter allowed an illegal fire to escape.

No arrests have been made and the Forest Service isn't releasing the hunter's name pending further investigation.

On Wednesday, investigators shot down a theory that said it was started by an illegal pot grow. Jerry Snyder of the U.S. Forest Service said that the steep and inaccessible canyon where the Rim Fire started didn't have a water source that growers look for when they set up remote gardens.

"The lead investigator says there's no evidence of any type of grow in the area where the fire started,'' Snyder said.

The Forest Service reiterated that Thursday saying there was no indication the hunter was involved with illegal marijuana cultivation on public lands and no marijuana cultivation sites were located near the origin of the fire.

The Rim Fire began Aug. 17, in the Stanislaus National Forest near the area known as Jawbone Ridge.

It has burned 237,341 acres and was80 percent contained as of Thursday.

Officials said 111 structures, including 11 homes, have been destroyed. More than 4,300 firefighters are still battling the blaze

Gas Line Leak Prompts Evacuations, Road Closures

More than 60 people were evacuated from a Chula Vista strip mall due to a gas line leak on Thursday, which also prompted some surrounding road closures.

According to Chula Vista Police Department Capt. Gary Wedge, a gas line break on Eastlake Parkway caused some temporary road closures in the area at around 4 p.m.

Wedge urged people to avoid Eastlake Parkway between Birch Street and Crossroads, including the Marketplace at Winding Walk strip mall that houses a Vons grocery store and Bank of America.

The 4-inch high-pressure natural gas line was ruptured by a backhoe digging up a construction site to the west of the strip mall.

As of 5:40 p.m., San Diego Gas & Electric crews were attempting to close the valve.

Officials say no one was injured. However, gas readings in the area are high enough to block traffic at Eastlake Parkway and Birch Street and temporarily shut down seven nearby businesses.

Man's Body Chopped Up After Botched Tryst, Robbery: PD

Philadelphia Police say a pimp and two prostitutes killed a Northeast Philadelphia man, chopped up his body and tossed it into the Schuylkill River after a botched robbery.

Keith Tolbert, Angel Weston and Stephenie Foulke were charged Thursday with the murder of Frank Zarzycki, police said.

Zarzycki's torso was found by fishermen near the 1300 block of Schuylkill Avenue in the Grays Ferry section of Philadelphia around 8 a.m. Tuesday morning. The 40-year-old's head, arms and legs had been chopped off and were missing.

Using a distinctive tattoo on Zarzycki's upper back, investigators on Wednesday were able to identify the man who had been reported missing by family a week before.

Philadelphia Police Homicide Unit Capt. James Clark said Zarzycki, who lived in the Somerton section of the city, went to Apartment 26 inside 220 South 11th Street last Monday, August 26 to have a sexual encounter with prostitutes.

The man allegedly began a sexual act with Weston, 21, and Foulke, 22, in the second-floor apartment's living room when Tolbert, the 34-year-old alleged pimp, came in to rob Zarzycki.

During the struggle, Zarzycki was beaten, tasered and then suffocated. He died as a result of the fight.

Capt. Clark said investigators believe the trio panicked and dragged the man's lifeless body to the bathroom. There, Tolbert allegedly used a hatchet to dismember Zarzycki.

His torso was then placed into a bag and thrown into the river, police said.

Investigators are still searching for Zarzycki's other body parts and are leaning on the suspects to share where and how they were disposed.

"We're still talking to them," Capt. Clark said of the suspects. "We have detectives back out at the scene. We will probably still have the Marine Unit go back out to certain locations along the river. The investigation is still on going."

The trio were arrested on Saturday, before Zarzycki's body was found, after the department's Vice Unit held a sting at the apartment.

The housing unit, which is listed in Tolbert's name, is located in Center City, just south of busy Market East near the campus of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. The apartment building has a mix of Section 8 and mixed-income units inside. Investigators say Tolbert paid only $30 a month in rent to live there.

Capt. Clark said the home was a known prostitution spot and that phone and computer records showed the victim had frequented the place.

"My understanding is he had been there before and obviously he wasn't robbed, but for whatever reason, this time they chose to rob him and it escalated to him being killed," Capt. Clark said.

Neighbors who live in the apartment building tell NBC10.com they saw plain clothed officers visit the same apartment last week and arrest a man and woman for alleged prostitution.

Since then, a police officer had been guarding the apartment, neighbors say. Investigators then came back to apartment on Wednesday to collect evidence.

Capt. Clark said crime scene investigators were back out at the apartment on Thursday to search for additional evidence.

Sources close to the investigation tell NBC10 crime scene techs found large pieces of flesh inside a bathtub drain pipe. That pipe was removed and taken into evidence.

NBC10 visited Zarzycki's family in Northeast Philadelphia on Thursday, but they did not want to speak with the media.

Tolbert, Weston and Foulke have been charged with murder, robbery and related offenses and all, police say, have criminal histories.

Teacher Suspended After Leno Appearance

A teacher who dropped his towel on "The Tonight Show" was suspended from a Southern California Christian high school.

Steve Endemano bared his backside during a bit in which "The Tonight Show" puts together a "sizzle reel" to dramatize an audience member’s life.

Centering on Endemano as an 64-year-old avid cyclist, the skit poked fun at age and steroid use. The scene, embedded below, culminated in a scene showing Endemano’s pixelated rear in a locker room.

Endemano told Jay Leno he teaches Bible study, physics and calculus.

A Facebook page titled “Justice for Mr. Steve Endemano” reported Thursday night that the teacher will be allowed to return to his classroom at Whittier Christian High School.

Calls to Endemano and the school district for comment were not returned by the time of publication.

After last week's suspension, Endemano’s students and their parents have taken to Facebook.

Some said the skit’s ending wasn’t all that funny. Others commented that the teacher looked great without a shirt.

But most said they supported the veteran teacher of 34 years. And his suspension was too harsh of a punishment for a late night joke.

San Francisco 49ers' All-Pro Linebacker Aldon Smith and his former teammate, Delanie Walker, are facing another lawsuit.

The second lawsuit filed this week in Santa Clara County comes from an attorney for Aaron Reyes, who is a friend of Ronndale Esporles, the plaintiff in the first lawsuit filed earlier this week.

Both lawsuits stem from a 2012 house party Smith hosted at his San Jose home.

MORE: Aldon Smith Named in Lawsuit Over 2012 House Party Shooting

Reyes said, like Esporles, he received serious, catastrophic and permanent injuries.

The pair of lawsuits paint a similar picture of the events during Smith's party.

In the lawsuit filed for Reyes, he claims Smith and Walker knew of gang members at the party. It goes on to report during the course of the party, both players became aware that there were gang members and persons armed with weapons on the premises.

The lawsuit also claims Smith had recently hosted similar parties at his home.

"Defendant Smith has already established a pattern of having wild and boisterous parties at his home," the lawsuit said.

The legal document said the party was advertised widely, including on the Internet. It also claims "drugs were used in an open and notorious fashion at the party."

Reyes also claims in his lawsuit Smith and Walker charged patrons for drinks, including serving an alcoholic concoction named "jungle juice."

Smith's legal team told NBC Bay Area they have no further comment.

Puffin Chases Los Gatos Girl in YouTube Hit Video

Dakota Wood found herself a new feathered friend at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

A playful horned puffin bird displayed a strong affinity for the 9-year-old girl during a recent visit to his tank, mirroring her moves for nearly a minute as she ran alongside the glass.

"I just went to the edge of the tank and he decided to follow me," Dakota said.

Her mother seized the moment and captured the precious seconds on video, which she later uploaded to YouTube. The video of the aquatic bird swimming alongside the girl had received more than 21,000 views as of Friday morning.

"I think it's the animal interacting so closely with humans," said Dakota's mother, Bobbi Jo Wood. "There are so many people who would love to have an experience like that. And it's just amazing cause it doesn't happen. You don't see that very often."

The budding friendship was cut short when Wood told Dakota it was time to move on. Still, both mother and daughter are glad to have the video to remind them of the funny encounter.

"He was just enamored with her," Wood said. "It makes me smile every time I watch it."

City Leaders Urge Public to Attend Miramar Air Show

Organizers of the Miramar Air Show have announced new elements to the annual San Diego event to promote a program that won’t include the traditional Blue Angels performance.

In July, it was announced that military involvement in air shows nationwide would be cut as part of federal budget cuts. That includes any military aircraft support for the air show scheduled for Oct. 4-5 north of San Diego.

Interim Mayor Todd Gloria was joined by other city and business leaders Thursday to highlight the new features for this year's show.

Participants for the event next month will be able to take part in a 5K Runway Fun Run/Walk and family bike ride and watch Racelegal Drag Racing as part of the Air Show event.

“By coming out to the airshow not only are you going to have a great time with family and friends, but you're also making a statement that you want the airshow to continue,” Gloria said. “And I know our friends in Washington, D.C. will hear that loud and clear.”

The announcement Thursday was part of a push to encourage more people to come and support the military. Admission is free but preferred seating tickets are available online.

A team consisting of former Navy Blue Angels, Air Force Thunderbirds and Canadian Snowbirds pilots is also scheduled to perform.

There will be a large static display of Marine Corps aircraft and ground combat equipment, both past and present.

Also, on Saturday there will be a large fireworks display.

$100K Offered for Fatal Freeway Shooting Info

$

The parents of a 22-year-old man gunned down on the freeway are asking witnesses to come forward with any information on his murder and are offering a $100,000 reward.

Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation tribe member Xusha Brown, Jr. of El Cajon was killed in a highway shooting in May. He was traveling along Interstate 8 around 4 a.m. with 21-year-old driver Malcom Hune when shots were fired at their car.

Brown was shot in the head and died shortly after. Hune was shot in the shoulder and later recovered from his injuries.

The highway was shut down for hours while officials investigated the incident, but no suspect was found.

The La Mesa Police Department believes there are witnesses out there that are reluctant to come forward in this case, but they are willing to work with people to make sure they feel safe in doing so. The reward for information is now $100,000, which increased from the original $50,000 donated by the
Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation.

Police are calling this shooting gang-related, but believe that Brown was neither in a gang nor the target in this shooting. They are asking for people to come forward to figure out the motivation behind the shooting and figure out who was in the other vehicle that shot at the car Brown was in.

Brown’s mother, Deborah Flores, says she wants justice for her son's life and asked witnesses to put themselves in her shoes and help give information on who killed her son.

“Somebody that night made a choice to change our lives forever and our lives will never be the same again,” she said at a press conference Thursday. “And now we’re trying to pick up the pieces.”

Soup’s On: New Pods Coming to Keurig Machines

Forget the quick cup of coffee, pretty soon Keurig machines will be able to brew an entire hot meal on the fly.

Campbell’s Soup and Keurig are partnering up to offer teeny, tiny, single-serve soup pods that can be brewed at the touch of a button using the popular Keurig coffee machine.

Starting next year, Campbell’s Soup Co. and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters will begin offering the savory soup pods for the Keurig.

The new soup K-cups will contain a broth that can be brewed just like a standard coffee K-cup. The soup can be brewed into a cup over a packet of a special dry mixture containing noodles and vegetables.

As of right now, the companies are planning to launch three types of new soup pods including a chicken broth and noodle soup.

The Associated Press reports that the Keurig machines self-clean through the brewing process, so the flavors of soup and coffee won’t mix brew after brew.

Owner of Thin Florida Dog Arrested on Unrelated Charges

A man who was under scrutiny for his rail-thin dog this week was arrested by Fort Lauderdale Police Thursday – but the charges have nothing to do with his pet.

D'Anthony Davis, 23, was arrested on outstanding warrants out of Polk County after the animal rights group that focused attention on his Doberman Pinscher found the warrants and gave them to Fort Lauderdale Police.

The pet’s other owner, Sherene Walker, 22 – who police identified as Davis’ girlfriend – was also arrested Thursday on charges unrelated to the dog, according to her arrest affidavit. The dog, which is named Duchess, has been temporarily turned over to animal control.

A photo of Duchess that was posted on Facebook by 100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida went viral earlier this week, leading group members to demonstrate outside Davis and Walker’s home on the 1600 block of Northeast 17th Ave. on Tuesday. They said the dog was emaciated and tethered at the house.

Police detectives and a Broward County Animal Control specialist investigated their claims Wednesday morning and found no signs of neglect or abuse, police said. They found the dog untethered in the backyard. Animal control said the dog was underweight because of hookworm, but otherwise did not appear to be in poor health.

Outraged by the police response, the animal rights group did a little digging.

"We had spent all night, Carol and I and a few other wonderful people, researching,” said Amy Roman, the president and founder of 100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida.

She said they found out that there were warrants for Davis’ arrest in Polk County and gave the information to detectives. He was wanted on several warrants on charges including resisting an officer without violence and trespassing, according to Fort Lauderdale Police.

Davis was also given new charges of resisting an officer without violence because he pulled away from police, and with violating a domestic violence injunction order because he was staying at the home with Walker, his arrest affidavit said.

Walker faces charges of disorderly conduct, resisting an officer without violence, contributing to the delinquency of a child and aggravated child abuse for her actions at the home Thursday, police said in her arrest affidavit. She said she did not know Davis’ whereabouts and said she was alone in the home, though he was found inside a bedroom, police said. When police began to walk towards the bedroom Walker pushed an officer, while holding her daughter who is less than one year old in her arm, and several times she used the child to block the officers’ path by turning the child toward them, the affidavit said.

The child has been taken into the custody of the Department of Children and Families, police said. Duchess has been temporarily turned over to animal control. It wasn’t immediately known whether Davis or Walker have attorneys.

Davis said Wednesday that the whole ordeal involving Duchess was a misunderstanding.

"I take care of my dog," he said. "I had dogs all my life. My parents taught me to take care of stuff I have ... I wouldn't neglect the dog, because I think that's unfair to the dog."

But Roman said of their arrests, “It just shows their character, it is related, it’s character of who they are. They can say it’s unrelated all they want.”

The gunman suspected of shooting a 1-year-old Brooklyn boy in the head as he crossed a street in his stroller is in custody in Pennsylvania, authorities said.

NYPD officers and authorities with the U.S. Marshal Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended 23-year-old Daquan Breland, who is believed to be the shooter, Friday in Wilkes-Barre, according to Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

Daquan Wright, 19, was also taken into custody. Police believe he gave the gun used in the shooting to Breland.

Antiq Hennis was shot in the head Sunday evening as his father pushed his stroller across Livonia Avenue in Brownsville. Authorities have said the shooting may have been gang-related, with his father as the intended target.

Police said four shots were fired, and one hit Antiq on the left side of his head. Two bullets were found in his stroller.

In a 2009 mugshot, Breland can be seen with a tattoo that reads "family comes 1st." He served time that year for a shooting in Auburn, N.Y.; the details of that case were not immediately clear.

Kelly said Friday afternoon that the gun used in the shooting had been located. He would not comment on a motive.

Woman Cleaned Cop's Horse Manure Voluntarily: Police

A woman in a video posted to the Internet showing her cleaning up the manure for a Fort Lauderdale Police officer's horse said she volunteered to do it.

In the video, the  woman is shown scooping up the manure into a plastic bag on the sidewalk on Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard as three officers sit atop their horses nearby, in the video posted to YouTube by the Broward New Times Thursday.

"I was like, 'Oh my God,' that cop is going to let this horse s---t everywhere. So, I was upset about it. So, I stormed across the street and I was like, 'Officer, what are you going to do with all this horse poop?' 'He was like, well, I was going to scoop it up and I was like, let me do it for you,'" said Shannon Marie.

The video (below) shows the woman, wearing a tank top, jean shorts and flip-flops, cleaning the poop as passersby stare and a man standing next to the horses films the woman.

At one point, the officer appears to be directing the woman, pointing at the pile as she is bent over cleaning.

But Fort Lauderdale Police said Friday that the woman volunteered to clean the manure for the officer. They said the woman was talking to the officer when the horse did its business and the woman, who said she used to have horses of her own, said she didn't mind cleaning up the mess. And a restaurant employee, who wants to remain anonymous, vouches for that.

The employee said the woman was sitting at the bar having some drinks, and she volunteered to go over and clean it up.

"Why would you do that? Cause poop doesn't bother me to be honest. I'm a nurse and it just doesn't bother me and I live horses," she said.

According to the Fort Lauderdale Police website, their mounted unit was formed in 1983.

A man was caught with his pants down after he ran naked into a nearby South Florida house following an attempted robbery, officials said.

Deputies were called to the 1100 block of Hamptons Boulevard in North Lauderdale after a witness saw two men walk out of a home with a 50-inch television, according to a Broward County arrest report.

Authorities were able to catch up with one of the men, 21-year-old Zane Thompson-Henry, but the other man, 21-year-old Patrick James, ran away, the report said.

As James fled, an officer grabbed onto his clothing to try and stop him, causing James' pants to fall down, officials said. In order to get away, James took off his shirt and pants, and he fled the area with no clothes on, the report said.

He then ran into a nearby house where the door happened to be open, officials said. He made a hand gesture to be quiet to the two women who were talking inside and ducked behind the kitchen cabinets, according to the arrest report.

Deputies arrested him at the woman's house. He was charged with grand theft, burglary of an occupied residence, resisting an officer without violence and violation of his community control. He was being held without bond in the Broward County Main Jail as of Friday.

Thompson-Henry was charged with grand theft, burglary and resisting an officer without violence. He was being held on $4,600 bond at the Broward County Mail Jail as of Friday.

Former El Cajon City Leader to Serve Less Time: Report

$

A former El Cajon city leader, imprisoned for embezzling millions from a former employer, will get out of prison early according to a published report.

Former City Councilmember Jill Hanson-Cox admitted she stole $3.5 million from 2004 to 2008 when she worked as a controller for Century Design Inc. in Kearny Mesa. She spent the money on expensive clothing, airline tickets, spa treatments and Christmas gifts.

In December, Federal Court Judge Michael Anello sentenced Hanson-Cox to 30 months in a federal prison. She faced a maximum of more than 20 years in prison, and a $7 million fine.

Now the San Diego Union Tribune reports that authorities gave Hanson-Cox credit for good behavior and completing a drug program at the minimum-security camp in Arizona where she's been held.

Her new release date will be Sept. 17, 2014 according to the newspaper's report.

Hanson-Cox's attorney Charles Sevilla clarified the information saying his client may be released in the spring of next year.

While his client is not getting out early for good behavior, she is eligible to partake in a program for early release, Sevilla said.

Once she's released from prison, Hanson-Cox will likely be released to a halfway house according to her attorney.

Hanson-Cox was a two-term city councilmember and was serving as El Cajon's deputy mayor at the time.

Fletcher Gains Endorsements, Alvarez Joins Mayoral Race

San Diego City Councilmember David Alvarez is running for mayor.

The councilman from District 8 is known to be pro-labor union. The San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council votes to endorse a candidate on Friday.

Alvarez tweeted his intent to run in the November special election on Thursday morning.

Alvarez, who grew up in Barrio Logan, was the first in his family to graduate from high school and college, according to his website. He also graduated with honors from San Diego State University. Alvarez, his wife Xochitl, and their daughter Izel reside in Logan Heights.

Alvarez joins 21 other candidates in the quest to be San Diego's next mayor.

Meantime, Democrat Nathan Fletcher received endorsements today from some of the regions top Latino leaders.

"I think that what we have here is a person who can bring us all together; someone who really has love for this city and a love for all the communities in this city," said U.S. Rep Juan Vargas (D-San Diego).

Others supporting Fletcher at a news conference Thursday included state Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, Southwestern College trustee Humberto Peraza, Escondido Councilmember Olga Diaz, and Sweetwater Authority Chair Jose Preciado. Chula Vista Councilwoman Mary Salas was scheduled to attend the news conference, but was not present.

Gonzalez described going to Fletcher for help with a janitor's strike during the 2012 primary campaign when the Labor Council she helmed had already endorsed former Mayor Bob Filner.

"When I called him and explained the situation that we were in and the families that would be affected by this contract, and how people's healthcare and their children's healthcare were dependent on this being settled in a positive way, he said 'How can I help?' And he did," Gonzalez said. "A week before the primary election, he worked hard at helping us settle a contentious contract. And he knew he was going to get nothing out of it."

Gonzalez said she believes Fletcher does have a proven track record of helping Latino communities.

When asked what in his voting record helped Latinos, Fletcher pointed to his recent involvement in the San Diegans United for Comprehensive Immigration Reform effort; his vote during his time in the Assembly for legislation that ensured DUI checkpoints weren't immigration enforcement checkpoints, and said he's a longtime supporter of the DREAM act.

Looking ahead, Fletcher pinpointed emergency response times as an area that needs improvement.

"The simple reality is that today, if you're in a Latino community, the response times are longer," he said. "That's not right."

Meantime, Mickey Kasparian, president of the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Coucil, seemed confident in the process involved in securing the Labor Council endorsement.

"Lorena is not part of the Labor Council anymore," he said. "She's entitled to endorse any candidate she wants. But, her endorsement today will have no affect on what the Labor Council decides in our endorsement process tomorrow."
