Boy Dies After Yemeni Mother Fought for Visa to Visit Him

A terminally ill boy whose Yemeni mother fought to visit him after being barred from entering the U.S. by the Trump administration's travel ban has died in hospital in California, NBC News reported

Abdullah Hassan, 2, had suffered from a genetic brain condition and died at the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said in a statement released Friday.

“We are heartbroken. We had to say goodbye to our baby, the light of our lives,” Abdullah’s father, Ali Hassan, said in the statement.

Hassan — who is a U.S. citizen and has family in Stockton, California — brought his son to the U.S. for treatment a few months ago, CAIR said. But Abdullah’s mother, Shaima Swileh, is a Yemeni national and was barred from entering the country under the Trump administration's travel ban against people from mostly-Muslim-majority countries.

CAIR launched a campaign to publicize the family’s plight earlier this month and on Dec. 18 the State Department granted Swileh a waiver to visit her dying son. The 21-year-old mother arrived in San Francisco on Dec. 19.

The fire sparked just before 6:15 a.m. at a home in the 600 block of Lado de Loma Drive between Bandini Place and Lyon Circle. Flames could be scene shooting from the roof of the house as fire engines surrounded the property.

The Vista Fire Department was able to eventually knock down the flames. No injuries were immediately reported.

Further details, including what caused the fire, have not yet been released by authorities. Check back for updates on this developing story.

Man Killed in PB Shooting, Suspects Flee in Stolen SUV

A man was fatally shot at a home in Pacific Beach early Saturday morning and police say three suspects fled the scene in a stolen SUV currently being sought throughout San Diego.

As of 7:45 a.m., the suspects in the stolen SUV had not been found. The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) said the vehicle is a white 2015 Lexus RX350 with the license plate 7NWK357.

The SDPD said the deadly shooting happened around 1:45 a.m. at a home in the 2300 block of Wilbur Avenue. The typically quiet neighborhood is located just off Soledad Mountain Road.

When officers arrived at the home, they discovered a 44-year-old man lying on the floor, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital but died at 2:30 a.m., police confirmed.

The victim’s name has not yet been released.

Police said there were several other residents and people inside the home at the time of the shooting. Three suspects – all men described as being in their 20s to 30s – fled the scene in the white SUV, which belonged to one of the people who had been inside the home.

SDPD Lt. Matthew Dobbs said anyone who spots the stolen vehicle should immediately call 911. Do not approach the vehicle, as the suspects are considered armed and dangerous.

The investigation is ongoing; police have not yet determined a motive for the shooting. Anyone with information on this case can call the SDPD Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.

As residents woke up Saturday morning in the Pacific Beach neighborhood, many were shocked to see officers all over the street and even more surprised to learn what had happened at one of the homes along Wilbur Avenue.

“This is really new to me – it’s not like our neighborhood for something like this to happen,” resident Irene Jernegan told NBC 7.

9 Bizarre, Brazen and Brutal Crimes Caught on Camera in San Diego

$
0
0

Burglaries, robberies, assaults and petty crime happen every day in our county from San Ysidro to San Onofre. Here are some of the most bizarre, brazen and brutal incidents of small-time crime that have been caught on camera this year.

The reaction from the woman behind the camera recording this wild road rage incident on State Route 78 speaks for itself.

Surveillance images helped police arrest a man and a woman who entered an East Village business wearing disguises and shot the owner. The man, the suspected gunman, was wearing a mask resembling an older woman and his accomplice wore what appeared to be a long purple hair wig.

This story highlights just how unabashed some criminals can be, as well as how complete strangers can help us in a time of need. Alfredo Medina had $800 worth of tools stolen from him at a job site. Then an NBC 7 viewer gave him an envelope of cash so he could buy back what was stolen.

This armed robbery at an Emerald Hills gas station lasted all but 20 seconds, but likely scarred the clerk for a lifetime. As the masked robber pressed her gun against the clerk's head, she rifled through the cash register and took an undisclosed amount of money. Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.

These thieves threw boulders through the front window of a dirt bike shop in El Cajon and made off with two trail motorcycles worth more than $13,000 each. But as NBC 7's Ashley Matthews reports, anti-theft technology built into the top-of-the-line bikes might keep them from ever starting up.

This Escondido jewelry store robbery was like a scene out of a movie. As it turns out, the group's inquiries about a few fine jewelry pieces were for the sole purpose of distracting the employee so a woman could duck and scoot undetected on her way to the back room and empty out the store's safe.

It took a team of thieves about 80 seconds to park, jack up a 2005 Toyota Camry, slice off its catalytic convert and drive away. Most converters contain valuable metals like platinum and gold, making them a target for anyone looking to make a couple hundred bucks illegitimately. This is a crime that can truly happen to anyone.

The motivation behind this attack in North Park was unclear, but impatience may have had something to do with it. A woman was using a Redbox movie rental machine when a man in line behind her suddenly knocked her to the ground and proceeded using the machine.

A woman who appeared to be wearing a wig snuck into an Allied Gardens backyard and stole three kittens. When she went back out front, a getaway driver was waiting for her at the curb.

Computer Virus Halts Production of U-T, Other Newspapers

A computer virus halted the Saturday morning delivery of San Diego’s Union-Tribune and other major newspapers across the nation, the publisher and editor of the U-T confirmed.

The Union-Tribune’s Jeff Light said most subscribers were left without a physical newspaper Saturday morning. Production of the LA Times, Wall Street Journal, and New York Times were also impacted.

The issue was traced to what Light referred to as “significant delays at L.A.’s Olympic Printing Plant,” which “hobbled the ability to publish.”

“The infection of computer systems affected Tribune Publishing systems that are still shared by the Union-Tribune and LA Times under a service agreement with the former owner,” a statement released by Light read. “The Union-Tribune and Times are now privately held, but are still transitioning away from the Tribune systems.”

The publisher believes the virus hit late Thursday night and spread Friday “to critical areas needed to publish the paper.”

“Technology teams from both companies made significant progress against the threat, but were unable to clear all systems before press time,” Light added.

Light said the U-T’s digital replica edition was also affected by the glitch. The company worked throughout the morning to restore the digital version for customers. It, eventually, became available online in PDF format.

Light said Joe Robidoux, Director of Distribution, said print subscribers should get Saturday’s paper, which sells for $2.77, delivered with Sunday’s edition.

The Union-Tribune has been around since 1868. According to the paper’s website, U-T publications reach 96 percent of San Diego County households each week.

The unidentified man, who was providing medical assistance in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has shown no symptoms of Ebola, but will be closely monitored at the medical center.

“This person may have been exposed to the virus but is not ill and is not contagious,” said Dr. Ted Cieslak, an infectious diseases specialist with Nebraska Medicine, in a statement.

Doctors will work with federal, state and county public health officials to monitor the man and secure the area so no members of the public or other patients are exposed.

Ex-Imperial Beach PTA President Wanted for Alleged Embezzling

A former Imperial Beach PTA president is wanted for allegedly embezzling as much as $40,000 from funds meant for students, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

The sheriff's department issued a warrant for the arrest of Kaitlyn Birchman on Dec. 20 for allegedly stealing money from that Imperial Beach Charter School's PTA fund.

The money was supposed to fund student field trips and other student activities,  but instead, Birchman allegedly spent the money on herself and her family, the current PTA leadership said.

NBC 7 first reported about the alleged embezzling in August.

The current president and current treasurer of the Imperial Beach Charter School PTA estimate Birchman took between $25,000 and $40,000. No one knows exactly how much money is missing.

Amber Vissuet and Elizabeth McKay, the current president and treasurer of the Imperial Beach Charter School's PTA told NBC 7 in August during an 18-month period the organization's former president allegedly lied about the group's finances, emptied out its bank account, collected money from members for bills but failed to pay invoices, and spent the PTA's money on personal items and on family trips.

The I.B. Charter School PTA’s current treasurer said the real victims are the children, who missed out on field trips and back-to-school events typically funded by the PTA.

“I think that was the saddest part because the suspect had two children who went to school there,” McKay told NBC 7 in August.

A former Coronado police detective, McKay spent months analyzing bank statements and financial records.

“It’s a hard lesson to share with your kids that adults you trust and you think are good people are capable of doing something like this,” she said

McKay became aware of some discord in the PTA at the very first meeting she attended as a member.

At that March meeting, people were asking the PTA president some very pointed questions about the group’s lack of funds, and the president’s answers were — to the 19-year veteran detective — “not making sense.”

“She was saying things like ‘I kept the money in bags in my closet,'” McKay said. “Okay, well, do we need to go over to your house and get the bags of money out of your closet then?”

McKay later went with the current president Amber Visseut to the bank where the PTA kept its account and began looking over bank statements.

She matched cash ATM withdrawals made near Disneyland with times and dates the former president posted to her Facebook page she was at the amusement park with her family.

“I spent over 60 hours and put together a three-ring binder,” McKay said. McKay handed her findings over to the financial crimes unit of the sheriff’s department.

The leaders are stressing the loss of funds was solely the responsibility of one person, something the sheriff’s department said they cannot yet confirm at this stage in the investigation.

McKay wants justice for the children and to see the former PTA president held accountable for her actions, something she thinks may be unlikely to happen.

“It’s frustrating because I get [the authorities are] used to dealing with crimes of embezzlement of $100,000 to millions of dollars, and I understand that it’s not the crime of the century to them, but to us, it is,” she said.

Police are looking for a man who robbed a Subway sandwich shop Saturday afternoon in Mission Beach.

The man walked into the store on the 800 block of West Mission Bay Drive Near Bonita Cove shortly after 1 p.m. and demanded money, police said.

The man faked having a gun in his pocket, San Diego police Sgt. Thomas Sullivan said. The clerk handed over an undisclosed amount of money and the suspect, described as a man in his 30s, fled on foot, he said.

A similar robbery happened at another Subway last Sunday. The suspect, also described as a man in his 30s, in that case also simulated a gun to demand money from the clerk.

It was unclear if the two cases are related at this time, police said.

John Kelly Opens Up About Tumultuous White House Tenure

White House chief of staff John Kelly, who will depart President Donald Trump's administration on Wednesday, told The Los Angeles Times in an extensive interview published Sunday that the president never ordered him to do anything illegal and added that the proposed border wall at the center of the government shutdown fight is not as it has been portrayed.

Kelly, set to be replaced by Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney, who will serve as acting chief of staff, said he made sure the president had access to detailed information prior to making decisions, even though the president says publicly that he goes with his gut instinct, NBC News reported.

"It’s never been: The president just wants to make a decision based on no knowledge and ignorance,” Kelly said. “You may not like his decision, but at least he was fully informed on the impact."

The retired Marine general said Trump often pressed him on his legal authority to do certain actions, asking, "Why can't we do [something] this way?" Kelly added that he was not ordered to carry out any illegal action "because we wouldn't have."

The suspect who kidnapped a woman in South Crest and raped her in Mount Hope nearly two weeks ago was arrested Saturday, police announced Sunday.

Phillip Terrel McLeod, 47, was taken into custody around 4:30 p.m. Saturday, San Diego police Lt. Jason Weeden said.

McLeod was suspected of kidnapping a woman who was walking on the street around 11:30 p.m. Dec. 20 in the 3900 block of Delta Street near Balboa Elementary, Weeden said.

He allegedly pulled up in his white, two-door pickup truck alongside the victim and then got out of the car, threatened to “taze” the woman and forced her into his truck, the lieutenant said.

McLeod then allegedly drove her to a secluded area in near 39th Street and Broadway in Mount Hope where he allegedly raped her, Weeden said.

McLeod then allegedly drove the victim to Logan Heights and after the woman pleaded with him to let her go, the woman was released near the area of 32nd Street and National Avenue, Weeden said.

The Chula Vista Police Department reported a similar assault from a similarly described suspect as McLeod that same night in Chula Vista, he said.

A truck matching the description of McLeod's truck was captured on surveillance video near the E Street trolley station in Chula Vista.

Chula Vista police are investigating the sexual assault in their jurisdiction.

It was unclear if McLeod is still the suspect in the Chula Vista case, Weeden said.

An elderly driver crashed through the gates in the parking lot behind a church in Allied Gardens on Sunday and drove into the bushes of Navajo Canyon, police said.

The woman was leaving the Palisades Presbyterian Church, 6301 Birchwood Street, around 10:50 a.m. when the accident happened, according to San Diego Police Department.

The woman crashed through a gate, went through the parking lot, smashed a chain link fence and ended up 200 feet in the bushes behind some homes near the church.

She was briefly trapped inside the car but firefighters were able to extricate her, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said.

The woman was bleeding but was able to walk away from the crash.

The woman's son told NBC 7 she just bought the car Friday.

Twenty-two-year-old Alexandra Black, a college intern who had been employed at a North Carolina zoo for approximately two weeks, was killed Sunday after a lion escaped a locked space.

The Conservators Center in Burlington — between Greensboro and Durham — announced that the intern was killed during a routine cleaning of an animal enclosure at about 11:30 a.m. ET.

"While a husbandry team led by a professionally trained animal keeper was carrying out a routine enclosure cleaning, one of the lions somehow left a locked space and entered the space the humans were in and quickly killed one person," the zoo said in a statement.

The lion was shot and killed, the center said.

It is unclear how the lion escaped its enclosure.

5 Times the Ocean Wowed Us in 2018

Remember when San Diego's oceans shined a fluorescent blue? Or the time a pod of killer whales swam with boaters in the waters off Sunset Cliffs? Take a look back at five times the ocean right here in San Diego wowed us in 2018:

'Bloom' of Bioluminescence Lights Up San Diego Beaches

In May, photographers captured amazing shots of a bright blue hue coming from the water just offshore San Diego's beaches.

The bioluminescent display, brought to the shore by a red tide, created by a swarm of small organisms, a type of algae, that move together through the sea.

The algae gives off the aqua glow as a natural defense mechanism from predators that try to eat the blooms, according to researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

The best time to witness the phenomenon is in the evening, in a place with no light, as the algae will not "bloom" during the daylight.

Pod of Killer Whales Swims Close to San Diego Shore

A pod of orcas delighted tourists and locals alike when they swam unusually close to the San Diego coast in April, at one point visiting the La Jolla Cove frequented by sea lions.

About a half-dozen killer whales were spotted in several coastal waters in San Diego.

Incredible drone video from Instagram user dolphindronedom showed the pod of orcas surrounding and swimming underneath a small fishing boat near Sunset Cliffs, according to the photographer.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Marine Ecologist Bob Pitman said California's strong protection of marine wildlife may be drawing the marine mammals closer to shore, so some lucky beach-goers may be able to spot the awe-inspiring creatures in 2019 as well.

17-Year Water Temperature Record Broken

San Diego's "70 degree and sunny" disposition means trips to the beach are possible nearly year-round. Another draw to the beaches this year, though, were warmer-than-usual water temperatures.

In August, those water temperatures broke a record for the region when a monitor off Torrey Pines recorded the water at 81.3 degrees Fahrenheit.

Just days before, ocean temperatures in the waters off La Jolla broke a hundred-year-old regional record when sampled pulled from the end of the Scripps Pier showed a reading of 78.6 degrees.

Octopus Spotted in Shallow Waters Near OB Dog Beach

It's a rare sight at San Diego's beaches: an octopus floated right up to the shoreline at Ocean Beach's dog beach earlier this month.

According to a San Diego Fire-Rescue lifeguard, octopi are not uncommon to the area, but typically they are spotted in tide pools or in the deep blue sea.

Fish Out of Water: Grunion Spawn on San Diego County Beaches

While not unique to 2018, the so-called grunion run is unique to beaches between Northern Mexico and Southern California and is always a spectacle to behold.

During the mating ritual, which happens during full moon and new moon cycles between March and August, thousands of slim, silver fish beach themselves to spawn and then return to the ocean after laying and fertilizing the eggs.

Package With ‘Poison’ Label Left at North Park Fire Station

A cardboard box wrapped in duct tape and amateurishly labeled "poison" prompted a bomb squad response at a North Park fire station, though the package turned out to be harmless.

The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department noted they have seen an increase in these prank packages, like the one left by the front door of their Station 14 on 32nd Street on Sunday.

It's discovery at about 3:30 p.m. prompted a full response from the fire department's hazardous materials unit and the bomb squad, SDFD said.

Fire officials noted the box had "caution," "dangerous" and the names of chemicals written on but they were spelled wrong.

The bomb squad x-rayed the box and inside discovered aluminum flux and some trash, according to SDFD. The package was deemed safe and the scene was cleared.

During the investigation, which took about two hours, police rerouted traffic around the fire station.

Snow, Wind Expected in Mountains for New Year's Eve

Cold, windy conditions and a chance of snow could part of the forecast in San Diego for New Year's Eve, the National Weather Service said.

The NWS on Sunday issued a winter weather advisory that will go into effect 6 a.m. Monday in the mountains when a cold trough rolls into the area.

The trough will bring rain on the west side of the mountains and a chance of snow at elevations above 5,000 feet early in the morning, the weather service said.

As the day continues, the freezing level is expected to fall rapidly, bringing the possibility of snow to elevations above 3,500 feet, forecasters said.

The rain and snow could create icy conditions on Interstate 8 and mountain roads, including Sunrise Highway, late Monday into the evening, the NWS said.

The cold, chilly weather will also be accompanied by strong winds of 25 to 40 mph, according to NWS.

When the winter weather advisory expires Monday night, a high wind advisory goes into effect for the San Diego valley areas, the NWS said.

Gusts of 40 to 50 mph with peak gusts of 75 are expected in wind-prose passes, canyons and valleys Monday evening through Tuesday night, forecasters said.

The advisories come after a chilly weekend in San Diego where temperatures dipped into the 30s and 40s along the coast. A frost advisory was in effect until 8 a.m. Sunday.

Chargers Top Broncos But Chiefs Win Division

$

It started off as one of the ugliest games of the NFL season. It didn't get much better. But in the end the result didn't matter.

The Chargers beat the Broncos 23-9 in Denver but since the Chiefs waxed the Raiders 35-3, Kansas City wins the AFC West division title and the #1 overall seed in the AFC playoffs while the Chargers are the #5 seed.

The opening kickoff was a preview of things to come. Broncos head coach Vance Joseph decided to try an inside kick to start the game but the execution by kicker Brandon McManus was awful. The ball rolled straight to Brandon Facyson and the Bolts started at the Denver 49 yard line.

It took four plays to give it back. Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers made a bad throw to the sideline that was intercepted by Isaac Yiadom.

Rivers was also picked off on their 3rd possession when he tried to hit Antonio Gates but didn't see defensive back Will Parks float in front for an easy turnover.

The only thing that saved the Chargers was Denver's offense was terrible, too. The first points of the afternoon came in the 2nd quarter when QB Case Keenum threw a pass behind the line of scrimmage and short of his receiver. Chargers DB Desmond King jumped in to knock the ball away and linebacker Kyle Emanuel returned it 18 yards for a defensive touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

The Bolts forced another turnover late in the first half when safety Jahleel Addae picked off a pass in the end zone. But then Addae inexplicably not only brought the ball out, but as he was being tackled tried to pitch the ball to a teammate. The brain fart led to a fumble and the Broncos got the ball back. Denver kicked a field goal to make it 7-3 at the break.

In the 3rd quarter the Chargers defense stole the ball again, this time on another fumble that Joey Bosa recovered at the Broncos 16 yard line. A few plays later Rivers hit Mike Williams for a 3-yard touchdown that made it 14-3.

Denver finally found the end zone in the 4th quarter when Keenum found fullback Andy Janovich wide open for a 20-yard TD but on the 2-point attempt cornerback Casey Hayward jumped in front of a pass headed for Courtland Sutton and went 101 yards the other way for two Chargers points and a 16-9 lead.

Just about this time the Chiefs game went final but the Chargers kept their starting offense on the field one more time and Rivers led a TD drive that ended with Austin Ekeler scoring on a 1-yard TD run. After that it looked like a preseason game.

Geno Smith came in and on his 2nd play Von Miller forced Smith to throw the ball pretty much straight up in the air. It comically fell to Miller for a sack-fumble and showed everyone why it's so important for the Chargers to keep Rivers healthy.

Unless the team that ends up in the 6th seed (the Colts or Titans who play late on Sunday) wins its first two games the Chargers will have to win three games on the road to reach the Super Bowl, something that's only happened four times in NFL history (1985 Patriots, 2005 Steelers, 2007 Giants, 2010 Packers).
