Actor and comedian Marlon Wayans has a busy year with a new comedy show on NBC coming out and a new movie on Netflix, both released in August.

He stopped by NBC 7 studios in San Diego Friday to talk about his new projects.

Wayans is known for his roles in hit movies like Scary Movie and White Chicks.

His new show, "Marlon," is loosely based on his life. In it, he plays a divorced father trying to raise his children alongside his ex-wife, all with a comedic twist.

Wayans also has a movie coming out on Netflix called Naked. In it, Wayans plays Rob Anderson who is set to marry a girl but gets stuck in a time loop, waking up naked over and over again.

"I'm naked in the movie, so I did a lot of squats," said Wayans of his preparation for the role. "I love the movie Groundhog Day. So to have that experience and be naked at the same time: I'm a free spirit. I go into the house and get naked. Most of us do, let's be real."

Wayans is in San Diego for multiple comedy shows he's doing over the weekend at American Comedy Co.

"I'm doing eight shows," said Wayans, "Come get your tickets now while they're nice and cheap because after the TV show and the movie come out, it's going to be weird."

Naked will be available on Netflix August 11.

Marlon premieres on NBC Wednesday, August 16 at 9 p.m.

Bride Moves Forward After Alfred Angelo Bridal Closes

An investigation is underway after the Alfred Angelo bridal company filed for bankruptcy, leaving many brides without their dream dresses.

According to an attorney for the company, there will be a comprehensive investigation to determine what transpired at the Florida-based company before the bankruptcy was filed.

Currently, the investigation is not considered a criminal case.

Many brides who purchased their gowns from the bridal shop are still not certain they will ever get their money back.

One local bride, Julie Jones, bought her wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses back in June. She still hasn't heard back from the attorneys for Alfred Angelo.

At the time, she went into Alfred Angelo Bridal looking for a dress and walked out believing she found her dream dress.

"I just looked in the mirror and said, this is it. This is absolutely it," said Jones. "It had enough bling, not too much bling. It was form fitting but not too form fitting."

Shortly after that visit, a staff member from the shop contacted her and said the bridesmaids should come in to get their dresses because the shop wouldn't be doing any special orders anymore.

"I asked the question, are you guys going out of business? Should I be worried?" said Jones. "Oh no, everything's fine, everything's fine. Okay -- still had that feeling -- it's not okay."

Just a month after she bought the dress, the company filed for bankruptcy without contacting Jones at all.

Now, she is moving on without that dress.

"There's a reason everything happens, so I'm okay with it now. I've come to terms," said Jones, laughing with relief.

She has been credited back the money she paid through her credit card company, but is still in the process of filing a bankruptcy claim against the company. Despite all her stress, she is looking for a silver lining in the situation.

"I've come to realize the dress or dresses are not what's important. It's my marriage to my fiance and that's the best part. That's what I'm looking forward to now and I'm just going to start over," said Jones.

An attorney for the company said he is trying to get as many dresses to customers as possible.

Jones plans to look for another wedding dress soon, with a complete change in her color scheme for the wedding.

Bystanders, including children, came to the rescue of a beached whale Friday afternoon in La Jolla.

The pygmy pilot whale was spotted by several people attempting to beach itself near Scripps Pier in La Jolla, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD).

According to SDFD Lt. Rich Stropky, people recorded video and made calls to local animal rescue organizations, including SeaWorld San Diego.

[[437307093,C]]

"Basically what they did was they gave us directions, said 'Hey, the best thing you can do is dig a hole, keep the water in it, put the mammal inside the hole, keep the skin wet,'" said Stropky. "Lot of little kids running to and from the beach, back to the water with buckets of water to pour, so they really did a great job tonight."

[[437307083,C]]

Stropky said it wasn't just children but adults as well who jumped in to help the whale.

“It’s powerful and it’s supernatural," he told NBC 7.

He added that SeaWorld staff told them it was a rare thing to see a pygmy pilot whale on the beach.

A 20-year-old woman says a peeping tom stuck a phone camera under the door of a fitting room at a La Mesa Macy's while she was changing.

The incident occurred Thursday at the Macy's located in Grossmont Center.

Shelbi Ann Evans told NBC 7, this was the first time she had gone shopping by herself.

Evans said she was on Facetime with her family to show them the clothing she was trying on when she looked in the mirror and noticed a hand reaching under the door. The person was holding a phone, pointed in her direction.

"I just felt like really overwhelmed," Evan said. "Like, oh my gosh, is this really happening to me right now?"

As she as she spoke, the person left the dressing room, she said.

"I decided to take a deep breath, and I got out, and then you just tell someone right away," Evans said. "And I said, 'Excuse me' and they walked off and so, maybe someone saw them walk out."

Evans immediately reported the incident.

La Mesa police are in the process of looking at surveillance footage as part of their investigation.

They are asking anyone with information to contact them.

In a statement, Macy's said:

"Macy's condemns this type of improper behavior. The safety of our customers and associates is our top priority. As this is a police matter, we are cooperating fully with law enforcement as they conduct their investigation."

What’s Going to Happen to Health Care

$

Health care legislation is dead for now, but the White House and Congress have yet to announce their next step, NBC News reported. But their decisions, expected in coming days, could have major implications for Affordable Care Act's exchanges next year.

Republican leaders are weighing three options: They can keep fighting for a GOP health care bill in the hopes of a late breakthrough, work with Democrats on a bipartisan package to make insurance markets function smoothly in the short term, or encourage the ACA exchanges to collapse in the hopes of building pressure for repeal and replacement.

President Donald Trump has sent mixed signals on his intentions, but he’s threatened to cut off insurer payments. These threats have gotten louder recently and Trump said Friday that he wanted to "let Obamacare implode."

Trump’s push for collapse comes as insurance markets show improvement this year after a period of significant premium hikes.

Border Wall Push Creates Flap at National Butterfly Center

A national butterfly preserve is the latest flashpoint in the border wall debate as Democrats accuse the GOP of rigging the process to slip wall funding into a pack of House spending bills possibly up for a vote this week, NBC News reported.

While there are not specific details on exactly where $1.6 billion proposed for President Trump's border wall will be spent, an amendment sponsored by Rep. John Carter, R-Texas, calls for $498 million to go to 28 miles of "new bollard levee wall" in Hidalgo County in Texas' Rio Grande Valley — home to the National Butterfly Center.

The butterfly center’s executive director Marianna Treviño Wright said she found a work crew on the butterfly center’s property last week, and she worried that their efforts might be related to construction of the proposed border wall. The workers had chain saws and work trucks and had cut and shred brush, trees and plants, she said. Treviño Wright said she found surveyor stakes and "X" marks on the property. She posted photos on the center’s web site and Facebook page.

In a previously issued statement, the Army Corps of Engineers denied that its contractors cleared or removed trees at the center, but acknowledged the crew placed X markings on the ground for mapping and wooden stakes flagging proposed locations to bore holes for possible construction. The agency said its contractor collected two soil samples from the levee but did so away from the butterfly center.

The U.S. Navy’s newest guided-missile destroyer, USS Rafael Peralta (DDG 115), named for a fallen U.S. Marine Corps sergeant, was commissioned in San Diego Saturday.

The ceremony took place at Naval Air Station North Island.

The ship’s namesake, Sgt. Rafael Peralta grew up in San Diego and died in combat in Iraq on Nov. 15, 2004. Peralta, 25 years old at the time, was a scout team leader assigned to the “Lava Dogs” of Company A, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment.

Peralta’s team was clearing houses as part of Operation Phantom Fury during the second battle of Fallujah in Iraq. Though not personally assigned to enter the buildings, the sergeant chose to do so anyway. While going into a room inside one of those homes, Peralta was hit several times with gunfire from an AK-47 and was critically wounded.

According to the U.S. Navy, two fellow Marines on Peralta’s team rushed into the room and returned fire. The insurgents threw a grenade at the Marines. The Marines with Peralta tried to escape from the room but couldn’t.

“Still conscious on the floor, reports indicate that [Peralta] was able to smother the grenade under his body, absorbing the majority of the lethal blast and shrapnel, killing him instantly, but saving the lives of his fellow Marines,” the Navy said in a press release.

Peralta was an immigrant from Mexico who came to San Diego with his family as a teenager. He was a 1997 graduate of Morse High School; he joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 2000, immediately after qualifying for a green card. He was naturalized as an American citizen while serving in the Marine Corps.

Earlier this week, 10 service members from nine countries became U.S. citizens aboard USS Peralta.

Peralta's sister, Icela,  was at the naturalization ceremony and said seeing the service members follow in her brother's footsteps aboard his namesake ship was deeply moving.

"It’s a beautiful place; there couldn’t be no better place because they’re all serving members," she said. "It's just a great example for all immigrants from all countries, that you just have to focus and do what you want to do, there’s no limits."

Icela said seeing USS Peralta morph from only parts into a completed Navy ship has been an honor. The vessel will forever carry her brother's memory.

"Now seeing my brother – he never came back – but whenever I got to see this ship coming to San Diego, I know he came back to San Diego in spirit, and he’s protecting our country," she told NBC 7.

USS Peralta is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. It will be homeported at Naval Base San Diego and will operate with a crew of more than 300 sailors.

In addition to the Navy's ship, Peralta received another honor this week: on Tuesday, the San Diego City Council declared July 25 "Sgt. Rafael Peralta Day."

Oceanside Minister Out on Bail, Eyes Path to Legal Status

An Oceanside-based minister detained two months ago by U.S. immigration authorities is now out on bail and is working toward a path to gain legal status.

Jorge Ramirez spoke to NBC 7 on Saturday – his first full day out of jail. He said he has a lot to do.

On May 31, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers detained Ramirez in front of his home as he was getting ready to head to work.

"It looked like five guys threw me on the ground, put on their knee, grabbed me, picked me up and threw me in the expedition and drove away," he recounted. "It was unreal, one of those things you see in movies."

Ramirez said his parents brought him to the United States when he was 11 years old. He also said he had legal status through a work visa in the 1990s but that status only lasted six months.

He admitted he's been living in the country illegally for more than 30 years, understanding the reality that he could be detained and deported at any time.

Since his arrest he said his initial hearing was delayed but all of his paperwork was submitted by his immigration attorney showing his record in the country – an entire life he’s built here over the decades.

"Twenty years of tax returns, letters from community leaders, pastors from the places that I worked, pretty much everything," Ramirez explained. "I had report cards from when I was in 6th grade; my graduation; my diplomas; my perfect attendance."

When asked why he didn't apply for legal residency earlier, he said his lawyers offered a 50/50 chance of gaining legal status or being deported. Faced with the odds, he declined.

Ramirez said his path to legalizing his status is clearer now, and he’s already started the process. His son can now apply to let Ramirez live in the U.S. legally.

"My son turned 21 on July 18," he said. "When he did that, I was able to file under him."

Ramirez said he wishes ICE officers would’ve reached out to him with a notice to appear in court rather than detaining him and putting him in jail. He said he would’ve showed up to court.

“They could have called me; they could have sent a notice,” he said. “They know me. I live in the same place. I own a house; it's not like I'm going anywhere.”

Despite prior reports that Ramirez was a supporter of President Donald Trump, the minister insisted that was never the case.

A man who was charged with 68 felony counts of identity theft and fraud in multiple counties is in jail and due in court on Tuesday.

The suspect, 18-year-old Kevin Lucas, was arrested and booked into the Vista Detention Center in San Diego County in June, according to a police statement from the City of Manhattan Beach Police.

Lucas is suspected of targeting the vehicles of people, primarily surfers, who leave cell phones and wallets in their cars, then using stolen credit cards in Target stores throughout the counties of San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura, according to police.

In the City of Manhattan Beach alone, near Los Angeles, approximately 35 vehicles were burglarized from January 2016 to May 2017, according to an investigation by Manhattan Beach detectives.

In July the Manhattan Beach Police detectives searched a residence in Inglewood, Calif., and found evidence that pinned Lucas as one of the burglary suspects in that area.

San Diego County issued an arrest warrant for Lucas based on his alleged connection to several burglaries in San Diego, and in June he was in custody in Vista.

Lucas is charged with identity theft and fraud-related charges, and is awaiting his court date, according to police.

Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday that the administration will continue to “follow the law” when asked whether it was his job to continue to implement the Affordable Care Act as it was intended, NBC News reported.

But he would not say whether subsidies for low-income insurance policies would continue.

“Our job is to follow the law of the land and we take that mission very, very seriously,” Price said.

“The role of the Health and Human Services Department is to improve the health, the safety and the well-being of the American people," Price said. "And what we understand, what the American people understand is that their health and well-being are being harmed right now by the current law. And so our goal is to make — is to put in place, as well as the president's goal, is to put in place a law, a system, that actually works for patients. You can't do that under the current structure.”

A gushing water main break in the heart of San Diego's Little Italy left many streets flooded as crews rushed to turn off the water.

The pipe broke around 7 a.m. Sunday near Juniper and Kettner Boulevard, San Diego police (SDPD) said.

The gushing water blocked southbound Kettner Blvd. from West Kalmia to Juniper.

Public transit in the area has also been affected. The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) tweeted out that because of the main break, a Green Line bus bridge will operate between Santa Fe Depot and Washington Street.

The water has since been turned off, but many streets are still flooded and the extent of damage in the area is unclear.
