Gelatinous Sea Creatures Invade Northern California Coast

0
0

People aren’t the only ones flooding the beaches along the coast of Northern California this month.

In recent weeks, seemingly alien creatures have been found washed up in Monterey Bay, according to SF Gate. The animals look harmless, but they have caused issues within the fishing communities and may also be a sign of a more ominous issue. So what are these mysterious sea dwellers and what does their appearance mean?

Pyrosomes, also referred to as “sea pickles” or “fire bodies,” are made up of multicellular creatures called zooids. National Geographic reported that the fire bodies can be recognized by their cucumber shape and transparent, Jell-O like exterior. Researchers have also noted that the organisms are asexual, as stated in The Guardian.

They are more commonly found in tropical waters but have been spotted since 2015 in increasing numbers along the Northern California Current, which spans Northern California to Oregon and Washington, according to  the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Researchers from NOAA Fisheries’ Northwest Fisheries Science Center have partnered with universities in Oregon to explore why the creatures have surged off that state's coastline after having rarely been seen there before. Some pyrosomes — which can glow in the dark — have even been spotted as north as Alaska, according to Reuters

The Guardian reported that NOAA research biologist Rick Brodeur, along with marine biologist expert Dr. Lisa-ann Gershwin, suspect increasing water temperatures may be related. Further studies would need to be conducted though to discover if there is a definite link between climate change and the pyrosome’s appearance.

The influx of the creatures has already had a pronounced impact in some areas.

National Geographic stated that one research net pulled up around 60,000 of the pyrosomes within a five minute window. A crew of Alaskan fishermen also had to give up after being unable to remove all the sea cucumbers from their hooks, the site said.

Those who were able to catch anything noticed some fish were regurgitating sea cucumbers. National Geographic said it was unknown whether the creatures had been intentionally eaten or consumed because the fish were unable navigate through the masses of pyrosomes.

Natural predators have been bony fish, dolphins and whales, according to NOAA.

Mom's Boyfriend Gets Life in Prison in 'Baby Doe' Case

A Boston man who was convicted of second-degree murder in the death of 2-year-old Bella bond was sentenced Wednesday.

The judge sentenced Michael McCarthy, 37, to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 20 years.

Bella Bond's biological father, Joe Amoroso, spoke before McCarthy's sentencing, saying he was "robbed of my chance" to be Bella's father.

"No justice on Earth fixes the grief," he said.

McCarthy was found guilty by jurors on Monday after five days of deliberation and 15 days of testimony.

His defense attorneys plan to appeal his conviction, insisting that Bella's mother, Rachelle Bond, is the one responsible for the young girl's death.

After Bella's body washed ashore on Deer Island in Winthrop in June 2015, she was only known as "Baby Doe" until three months later, when a tip led to the arrests McCarthy and Bond. Both McCarthy and Rachelle Bond were arrested in September 2015 after Bond told a friend that McCarthy killed Bella, the friend then calling investigators with the tip.

Bond was scheduled to be sentenced to time served on Tuesday after pleading guilty to accessory charges in February in connection with her daughter's death. However, the judge postponed it to July 12 after they were unable to secure an bed at an inpatient substance abuse recovery center.

FBI Interviews Cyber Firm Kaspersky Lab Employees: Source

FBI agents on Tuesday paid visits to at least a dozen employees of Kaspersky Lab, a Russia-based cyber-security company, asking questions about that company’s operations as part of a counter-intelligence inquiry, multiple sources familiar with the matter told NBC News.

There is no indication at this time that the inquiry is part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election meddling and possible collusion.

Kaspersky has long been of interest to the U.S. government. Its cyber-security software is widely used in the United States, and its billionaire owner, Eugene Kaspersky, has close ties to some Russian intelligence figures, according to U.S. officials.

FBI agents told employees they were not in trouble, and that the bureau was merely gathering facts about how Kaspersky works, including to what extent the U.S. operations ultimately report to Moscow.

Pursuit Ends With Driver Crashing Into Car in Vista

A driver led deputies on a pursuit in San Diego's North County Wednesday morning that eventually ended with the suspect crashing into another driver in Vista.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department (SDSO) said deputies tried to pull over a driver in the early morning hours, but he refused to stop. A chase ensued, with deputies chasing the car on State Route 78 in San Marcos.

Deputies deployed spike strips on the road, but that failed to stop the driver.

At around 4 a.m., the suspect crashed into another car on East Vista Way at Osborne Street, bringing the chase to an end.

The SDSO said the driver got out of the car and tried to run away. A K9 officer bit the man and deputies were able to arrest him. His name has not yet been released.

Deputies said the driver of the car that the suspect hit was injured; paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help that victim. No one else was hurt.

No further details were released. Check back for updates on this story.

Watch: Man Is Hit By Bus Then Walks Into Pub

Keep calm and carry on.

That’s what Englishman Simon Smith seemed to do after being struck by a bus on his way home from work. Almost immediately after, Smith brushed himself off and entered a nearby pub as if nothing happened.

Despite being hit hard enough to crack the windsheild, Smith was left with only minor scratches and bruising. The incident took place on Gun Street in Reading, England, and was captured on CCTV.

The 53-year-old told U.K. news outlets he was lucky to be alive.

He explained in an interview with The Sun that he never saw the bus coming.

"It's quite funny everybody think I have gone for a pint," he said. "I was actually looking for a place of refuge when I went into the doorway of the pub."

An ambulance arrived then. It wasn't until after he was discharged from the hospital that he had a pint.

Man Sexually Assaults Woman in Motorhome: SDPD

Police have released a sketch of a man who allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in a motorhome in Encanto last month, standing over the victim as she slept before he attacked.

The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) said the sex crime happened on May 21. At around 8:40 a.m. that day, an unknown man entered a motorhome parked in the driveway of a home along the 500 block of 60th Street.

A woman was sleeping in the motorhome. When she awakened, she saw the man hovering over her. He then sexually assaulted the victim, police said.

The woman screamed and pushed him away; the suspect fled the motorhome, running away from the neighborhood on foot.

Along with a sketch of the suspect, police released a brief description of him Wednesday: he’s described as being in his mid-20s, around 5-foot-9, weighing between 180 and 190 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes.

A man who lives at the home where the motorhome was parked spoke to NBC 7 on Wednesday and said he’s shocked and sickened by the crime.

“I don’t even know what to feel,” he said. “I just think it is crazy, the fact there [are] people out there that are willing to do that kind of stuff; they have no remorse, no conscience about it.”

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on this case can call the SDPD’s Sex Crimes Unit at (619) 531-2210 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.

Surprise! Wife Reveals Pregnancy Upon Navy Sailor's Return

0
0

The wife of a U.S. Navy sailor had a big surprise to share with her husband when he returned to San Diego from a 6-month deployment last week: a new member of their family, nearly ready to join their ranks.

As her husband, Chris Daugherty, Cryptologic Petty Officer 1st Class, embraced his little ones clad in mini sailor outfits amid cries of "Welcome home daddy," his wife Natasha Daugherty hung back.

She hid behind a large decorated 'Welcome Home' poster decorated with blue hearts and red paint. When Chris reached out for a hug, Natasha tossed the poster aside to reveal her nearly 8-months pregnant, swollen belly.

Chris drops his arms and looks down. After a shocked pause, he pokes her belly and asks, "Is it real?"

While onlookers smile and laugh, Chris embraces and kisses his wife.

Natasha wears a white, long-sleeved shirt. Over the belly section, the shirt says, "I am the present my daddy gave my mommy before he deployed."

The moment was shared in a Facebook video that had 2,600 views and 131 likes by Wednesday at noon.

"Wanted to say thanks to my amazing wife Natasha for the awesome homecoming weekend she planned," said Chris, in a Facebook post later. "I couldn't have asked for a better one and it was great news finding out we will be welcoming a new baby girl soon."

The couple lives in Temecula and shares three children, including a 10-year-old son, a four-year-old girl and an 18-month-old girl.

Natasha told NBC 7 that the hardest part of keeping her pregnancy a secret was worrying that something could ever happen to her husband while he was deployed, especially as tensions rose with North Korea.

"As soon as we started having trouble with North Korea, I became worried," said Natasha.

His ship was turned around and sent to the Korean Peninsula to show force and his stay was extended for 30 days. He even sent Natasha an email telling her how much he loves her, just in case anything should happen.

"He was telling me goodbye. At that point, I was extremely emotional. I wanted to tell him, I wanted to freak out," said Natasha. "But I kept my calm and waited, just a little longer."

She says it was also a challenge to make sure her 4-year-old toddler didn't tell Chris about the pregnancy while talking on the phone.

Natasha said, "It was difficult but totally worth it in the end!"

The USS Vinson Carrier Strike Group returned to San Diego last Friday, after a deployment to the Western Pacific.

Food, Water to Be Dropped to US Hikers Stranded in Mexico

The rescue of three U.S. citizens stranded near one of the tallest peaks in Baja California has proven to be more difficult than many may have thought.

Morgan Fox, 61, and his daughters, Maura, 20, and Claire, 25, of San Diego were found Tuesday in very steep, rocky terrain near the summit of Picacho del Diablo, also known as “The Devil’s Peak.”

The trio left San Diego on Tuesday, June 20. They were expected to the hike to the summit on Friday and return home Sunday evening. When they didn’t, Fox’s wife contacted the authorities in Mexico.

A search was organized Monday afternoon. By Tuesday morning, Mexican authorities had 10 people searching along the remote trail.

A helicopter spotted the trio in a steep canyon and dropped six liters of water to them.

Fox and his daughters spent the night on the mountain.

In the most recent update, the Protección Civil Baja California agency said the daughters are doing well while Fox appears to be weak. A family friend told NBC 7 Fox lives with diabetes and needs insulin to control the condition.

Search and rescue crews plan to deliver food, water, a glucose meter and radio communications from the air since it’s not safe to land. Teams are waiting at the bottom of the canyon to render aid.

It’s estimated that the hikers will need to travel eight hours on foot to make it out of the area.

The trio has hiked before in the San Pedro Mártir Park. Pichaco del Diablo is the highest peak in Baja, at over 10,000 feet. The Devil’s Peak is a challenging trail located more than a day’s drive south of Tijuana and the U.S.-Mexico border.

Family friend David Larson hiked the area with Morgan 13 years ago. He said the route goes through a steep canyon that can be treacherous.

“You have semi-truck sized boulders stacked up in this canyon so it's very dangerous,” Larson said. “There's not an actual trail. You're looking for the cairn, which are piles of rocks, to mark where you're supposed to go.”

e said there was some cell phone coverage in the area but it was spotty. Without a satellite phone, communication could be limited.

PB Woman Recovers Some Stolen Marathon Medals

A Pacific Beach woman has recovered a few of the dozens of marathon medals stolen while she was moving.

Approximately 20 of the medals, priceless to Andrea Abel, were found around the neck of a homeless man hours after they were reported missing.

Abel earned each medal while raising $160,000 for cancer research in honor of her late father.

"A lot of them were with personal engravings, like, 'This one’s for you, Dad,' and just some really special things that I think are irreplaceable," she said.

The medals were in a box outside Abel's apartment near Hornblend and Dawes streets Tuesday morning.

"I brought this bin of things down and realized I wasn't going to be able to get it in my car and I thought I should run up and get the lid,” she explained.

Abel said she ran upstairs for just a minute, leaving her keepsakes outside her car. When she came back they were gone.

The medals symbolize at least 20 relays, 40 half-marathons, and approximately 10 marathons.

Abel started running races in 2011 in honor of her father and grandfather who both died of cancer.

Her father died after a battle with cancer 15 years ago this month. Her grandfather died about five years ago from cancer, she said. Just last year, Abel's mother battled skin cancer.

Abel runs to support the American Cancer Society. In all, she and her group of friends and family have raised $160,000 for the charity, she said.

“The medals are kind of this thing to represent this way to keep the connection to my dad alive in a way," Abel said.

‘Jeff and the Showgram’ Axed From Morning Radio

0
0

A beloved radio program on San Diego’s airwaves for nearly 30 years has been canceled – much to the dismay of loyal listeners.

“Jef and the Showgram” – co-hosted by Jeff Detrow, Tommy Sablan, Laura Cain and Emily Griffiths – was “in the air” as usual Tuesday morning on KyXy 96.5 FM. But on Wednesday, when listeners tuned in during the morning commute, the show was abruptly gone.

Tommy Sablan confirmed to NBC 7 that the “Showgram” was canceled.

Sablan said he’s proud of the work the show has done over the past three decades – not only on the air but in the community. He said that, by now, listeners are more like “family.”

“I love it when we get messages from someone saying, ‘Hey I take my kids to school listening to you guys, my mom took me to school listening to you guys too,’” Sablan said.

While the "Showgram” is gone, for now, Sablan is confident the radio program will land on its feet.

“I am optimistic we will be back,” he added.

The radio show, formerly called "The Jeff and Jer Showgram," had been on the air in San Diego since May 3, 1988.

For 27 years, it was helmed by broadcasters Jeff Detrow and Jerry Cesak, with Sablan serving as producer and on-air sidekick. Cain joined the team in 1992, while Hoag joined in 1993. Griffiths rounded out the ensemble in 2009.

When Cesak retired from radio in October 2015, the program was renamed "Jeff and the Showgram." At that time, Sablan said KyXy had signed the show on for a few more years.

In 2016, the "Showgram" saw another change when Hoag left the program. Since then, Detrow, Sablan, Cain, and Griffiths had been holding down the fort.

Over the decades, the show has bounced around several different local radio stations, including a run on Star 94.1 where a contract dispute took the show off the air in 2009. For a couple of years, Cesak and Detrow produced an online radio show from Cesak's garage.

The show eventually found a home on KyXy, debuting its first broadcast on that station on Jan. 24, 2011. "The Jeff and Jer Showgram" was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2016.

For now, "Showgram" listeners -- all 11 of them, as Detrow often likes to joke on the air -- will have to hang tight to learn if, in fact, the show will go on elsewhere.

Many fans have taken to Sablan's Facebook page to voice their disappointment and offer words of appreciation for all of the laughs, all of these years.

NBC 7 reached out to KyXy for comment Wednesday on the dismissal of the "Showgram"; we have not yet heard back from the station. The "Showgram" is no longer listed on the station's website as part of station's programming.

Fundraiser Held for Sheriff's Veteran Diagnosed With Cancer

A fundraiser is being held Wednesday evening for a retired Sheriff’s deputy diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer.

"Don has been an incredible asset to the San Diego Sheriff Department, Sycuan Police Department, and has unselfishly given up much of his time to help others, including his wife Missy, whose son has been missing for over seven years," stated his family on their GoFundMe page.

Don Parker, 71, was with the department for 25 years, and he led the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue team for eight years. He coordinated search efforts for some of the most high-profile cases in county history, including the search for teenagers Chelsea King and Amber Dubois.

Parker was diagnosed with cancer in May. Doctors have told his wife this form of cancer is considered aggressive, and patients typically have 14 to 16-months to live.

The fundraiser will be held at the Chic-fil-A located at 3750 Sports Arena Blvd from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The family is facing some serious financial hardships as his wife will likely be unable to work, so she can take care of Don full time, according to the page.

Parker was diagnosed with a glioblastoma – a life-threatening cancerous brain tumor. Due to the cancer's severity, 10 to 30 percent of the tumor could not be removed. He is currently undergoing radiation and chemotherapy treatment.

“The type of brain tumor that Don has will require an incredible amount of care, time, patience and unfortunately, a lot of money,” stated his family on the page.

Further information is available at his GoFundMe page.

A brush fire that broke out in a Burbank hillside forced dozens of evacuations Wednesday afternoon, according to the Burbank Police Department.

Sixty to 70 homes were under mandatory evacuation due to the quick-moving fire that lit up dry brush in the area, said Burbank Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Derek Green.

Some streets were closed due to the fire, including Irving Drive east of Kenneth Road and Joaquin Drive at Haven Way, the department said.

An evacuation center was set up at McCambridge Recreation Center as mandatory evacuations were issued for all homes in on Viewcrest Drive and Howard Court.

Some voluntary evacuations were also underway as Burbank police and fire personnel were responding.

The Los Angeles Fire Department, Los Angeles County Fire Department and Pasadena Fire Department were also assisting, Green said, adding that the fire could become a probelm for surrounding cities like Pasadena and Glendale.

Deadly Police Shooting of TPHS Student Was Justified: DA

0
0

The San Diego Police Department's shooting of a 15-year-old student armed with a BB gun in the parking lot of Torrey Pines High School (TPHS) was justified, the District Attorney's office ruled.

On May 6, just before 3:30 a.m., the teenager at the center of this case called 911 asking for police officers to conduct a welfare check on a minor near TPHS. The minor he was referring to was himself, only he talked in the third person when making that 911 call, SDPD Acting Homicide Lt. Mike Holden said.

"[In] our preliminary investigation, we believe that the subject that was shot is the person who actually called to check the welfare [of the minor]. We believe that he actually called and spoke about himself in the third person," Holden explained. "It was a very general 'check the welfare' call."

"It was a phone call that 'there's a male juvenile in front of the school, it appears someone should check on him,'" Holden added.

The SDPD said the caller stated that the juvenile had no weapons.

Two officers arrived at the parking lot at the front entrance of the school. There, they spotted the teenager standing in the lot.

Holden said that as the officers got out of their patrol car, the teenager pulled a gun out of his waistband "and pointed it directly at one of the officers."

Both officers drew their service weapons while repeatedly ordering the teenager to drop his weapon. Holden said the teen refused to drop the weapon and, instead, "continued to point the handgun at the one officer and then began walking towards the same officer."

Again, the officers told the teen to drop his weapon.

Holden said the officers feared for their safety and fired their guns at the teen, striking him "a number of times."

The teen was critically wounded and taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla where he died a short time later. The officers, a 28-year veteran and 4-year veteran of the police department, were not hurt.

Investigators have now determined that the weapon held by the teen was a semi-automatic BB air pistol.

The teenager killed by police lived in the neighborhood. Since he's a minor, police will not be releasing his name.

Holden said the officers involved in the teenager's shooting were wearing department-issued body-worn cameras, so footage of the shooting exists. Those videos were impounded as evidence in the investigation.

On May 5, San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis held a news conference to release videos of three prior shootings in San Diego involving local police officers and deputies.

The DA’s office is responsible for determining whether a crime was committed in an officer or deputy-involved shootings in San Diego County. Video from an officer's body camera may be part of the investigation.

Dumanis said the DA's office was releasing the videos in those prior incidents per the protocol reached with law enforcement agencies. She has held similar news conferences in the past to reveal new details about other law enforcement involved shootings in San Diego.

After the investigation concluded, the DA's office determined the officers do not bear criminal liability for their actions.

The DA's office added that they will not release body camera footage of the incident because a minor is depicted in the footage and minors are often protected by the court system.

“This was a terrible tragedy for the boy’s family, friends, classmates, and the community in which he lived," said DA Spokesman Steve Walker in a statement. "His mother has requested the video not be released to avoid additional suffering and anguish for the family and we are respecting her wishes to maintain her family’s privacy. Understandably, she does not want the details of what led up to her son’s shooting to be shared with the public. Release of the video and extensive details of the shooting would also undoubtedly cause further trauma to students and teachers at Torrey Pines High School. Seeing video images of the last moments of a 15-year old boy’s life does not serve a public interest, in this instance.”

Suicide intervention services for all residents of San Diego County are available by calling the Access and Crisis Line at 1-888-724-7240. Spanish speaking counselors are available most hours, and interpretation is accessible in over 140 languages through language interpreting services.

Early Arrival: Phoenix Woman Gives Birth to Boy on Flight

The phrase "baby on board" took on a whole new meaning when an Arizona woman gave birth on a Spirit Airlines flight on Saturday.

Cristina Penton, who was 36 weeks pregnant during the flight, gave birth to a healthy baby boy while the plane was still in the air. Thirty minutes after the aircraft left Fort Lauderdale International Airport, Penton said she wasn’t feeling well, according to a statement.

"I didn't think I was having the baby because it was too soon, but after a few minutes I knew I needed medical attention,” said Penton.

The plane was bound for Texas, but was diverted to New Orleans Louis Armstrong Airport so that medical emergency crews could deliver the baby. However, no such crews were needed.

"The flight attendants contacted doctors on the ground and they advised the flight attendants to see if there were any medical personnel on board," said Penton.

"As it turned out there was a pediatrician and a nurse. Soon after that, it was clear I was having my baby, and I was in pure panic."

Baby Cristoph was born just a few moments later, weighing at 7 pounds and measuring 19.5 inches. After the birth, they were taken to Ochsner Medical Center in Kenner, Louisiana.

"A baby being born during a flight is very rare," said Paul Berry, a spokesman for Spirit. "But our flight attendants are trained to handle medical emergencies in flight and they have access to doctors on the ground via inflight communication."

Penton said she was comfortable flying even at 36 weeks because her other two children were born full term. Her husband, who drove to meet her in New Orleans, later said "I told you so," after warning her not to take the trip.

New Metro Passes Cut Wait Times For Public Transportation

As summer kicks into high gear, many will take public transportation to get to concerts, events and Comicon in San Diego.

The Metro Transit System (MTS) has rolled out a new way to pay your ticket fare, which is quicker and easier.

With their new 'compass cash' program, passengers of the trolley or bus can reload a single compass card with up to $300.

"Passengers no longer have to go to a ticket vending machine and wait in line each time they want to purchase a fare," said Mark Olson, public relations manager for MTS.

Olson added they've included the new technology as an option for passengers to offset the influx of riders that will come during the summer.

With the new pass, customers can tap to reload their cards, then tap the card onto a validator on the platform to hitch a ride on a train.
