A dozen Naval Sea Cadets got a firsthand look at the Coast Guard’s mission during a nine-day training program onboard the Coast Guard cutter Sea Otter off the coast of San Diego.

"We're proud to host these youths and show them firsthand what it is we do on the water," said Senior Chief Petty Officer Justin Eaton, the Sea Otter's officer in charge. "Many of these cadets will go on to join a sea-going military service or law enforcement group so we view this investment of our time as extremely beneficial to the future of our country's security. I've been involved with the Sea Cadets for 12 years and it feels great to provide a positive influence as these young men and women consider their possible futures."

The Maritime Interdiction Operations training, which finished Saturday, also included tours of the facilities for the Coast Guard's Pacific Area Law Enforcement Team and Maritime Safety and Security Team in San Diego, as well as physical fitness, self-defense, weapons and safety qualifications.

The cadets are part of the Naval Sea Cadet Corps, a nonprofit organization that teaches teens about the Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Merchant Marines.

Conan O'Brien to Return to San Diego for 2017 Comic-Con

Late-night funnyman Conan O’Brien plans to return to San Diego Comic-Con International (SDCC) next month, hosting his talk show from downtown San Diego as the four-day pop culture convention unfolds.

From July 19 through July 22, O’Brien will embark on another edition of what's known to fans as "ConanCon." He will tape his TBS show at the historic Spreckels Theater on Broadway – the same venue he took over in 2015 and 2016 during Comic-Con.

In those prior "ConanCon" years, O'Brien hosted a slew of high-profile celebrities at the San Diego tapings, including actress Jennifer Lawrence and her “Hunger Games” co-stars in 2015, as well as the cast of “Game of Thrones.” In 2016, the stars of "Suicide Squad" dropped in.

For four days, fans lined up outside Spreckels Theater hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite celebrities and, of course, snag a selfie with O’Brien.

Now, ConanCon will go down again -- likely with the same fervor from fans.

On Friday, O'Brien's Team Coco website announced that those who have badges to next month's Comic-Con could begin requesting free tickets to the tapings.

Comic-Con attendees can register here to be placed on a waiting list for four San Diego tapings: 3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 19; 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 20; 4 p.m. on Friday, July 21; 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 22.

The tapings are for fans age 16 and older. Putting in a request for tickets doesn't guarantee entry -- fans will have to wait for notification via email if they're among the lucky chosen ones. They will have to pick up their tickets at a specified time before the taping.

O’Brien’s show will also make a limited number of standby tickets available on the day of each taping. Those tickets will be available just before showtime each day -- if there are any empty seats to fill in the theater. Most of these seats will be single seats throughout the venue. For those standby passes, fans can go to the Team Coco Ticket Space at 969 1st Avenue at 8 a.m. on the morning of the taping they’d like to attend. There, wristbands will be distributed to the first 200 fans and hopefuls will be given details on a location and time to return to see if they will be getting into the taping.

For more information on tickets to Conan at Comic Con, call (818) 977-3056 or reach out via email to tickets@conacotv.com.

For now, O’Brien’s celebrity guests for his Comic-Con tapings are unknown, but if it’s anything like last two years, some very recognizable stars will walk through those doors at Spreckels Theater, ready to get their geek on with Coco.

San Diego Comic-Con runs July 20 through July 23 at the San Diego Convention Center.

Surfing, music and giving came together at the 13th annual Bro-Am Festival in Encinitas Saturday. The concert and surf competition, hosted annually by San Diego-based rock band Switchfoot, raises money for homeless and at-risk youth.

“Getting out with the kids and pushing them into waves and riding waves ... [and] pushing them ... beyond their boundaries and just seeing the smiles and the excitement makes it all worthwhile,” San Diego surfing legend Rob Machado told NBC 7.

The free festival usually attracts around 17,000 fans, according to organizers.

“It’s good to know that people care about kids like us,” challenged athlete William Thompson said.

The band signed autographs and met with fans before catching some waves.

And it’s not just Switchfoot that got in on the action. Six nonprofits teamed up with the stars to raise funds for local San Diego organizations already making a difference in the community.

San Francisco to Honor WWII Victims by Blowing Kisses From Pink Triangle

The Pink Triangle may be a byproduct of the Holocaust, but San Francisco on Saturday will light up its iconic installation with 150 rainbow-colored kisses, effectively turning its symbolism on its head.

“We’ve totally flipped the meaning of the Pink Triangle – it’s about love and not death,” said co-founder Patrick Carney.

Obscura Digital, known for projecting lights on the Conservatory of Flowers for Summer of Love and on the Empire State Building to raise awareness about animal extinction, will help give San Francisco’s beloved homage to the LGBTQ community a real smacker during Pride 2017.

“We’ve photographed hundreds of people blowing kisses so it’s going to be kisses to the world from the Pink Triangle,” said Carney, visibly excited about the project known as “Kisses from San Francisco.”

The much-awaited light show on the Pink Triangle will be visible from nightfall through 2 a.m., said Obscura Digital.

[[430385743, C]]

A week that was marked by a record-breaking heat wave gave way to an overcast and gloomy Saturday, but that didn’t stop nearly 200 volunteers, who flocked to the north hill of Twin Peaks.

Blanketed by Karl the Fog, they helped set up the iconic Pink Triangle, which every year honors gay people who were persecuted and slain in Nazi Germany during World War II.

“They had a series of triangles for their undesirables and pink was for the gays,” Carney said.

The Rainbow Flag was created in 1978 by artist Gilbert Baker when then-San Francisco city supervisor Harvey Milk asked his friend to use his skills to make banners for gay and anti-war street protests.

The bright colors have since become synonymous for the gay rights movement. Carney described the Rainbow Flag as “entirely new and beautiful and wonderful.”

In contrast, he said, “The Pink Triangle has a tragic history and part of acknowledging and celebrating where we are for 2017 is remembering where we’ve been.”

[[430505003, C]]

Seeking to add a pop of color to San Francisco’s Pride Parade, Carney remembered looking up at Twin Peaks over 22 years ago and seeing a “big, blank canvas.”

So Carney and a friend went out and bought tarp and paint. With the help of eight others, painted it bright pink “in the dark of the night so we wouldn’t be arrested.”

Fast forward to 2017 and San Francisco police officers and elected officials were on hand to help construct the Pink Triangle, which now spans one acre and 175 pink tarps and is held in place with 5,000 12-inch long steel spikes.

Carney said that he didn’t expect his “renegade project” to last more than a year or two. However, realizing that people didn’t know the meaning or importance of the Pink Triangle, Carney came up with the idea of a yearly ceremony. Educating people enabled the movement to pick up steam. Decades later, the Pink Triangle continues to resonate.

“Especially in this administration, we’re not sure what’s going to happen with our rights,” Carney admitted. “We’ve had a lot of gains in recent years, but in some states they’re trying to roll back or ignore those gains.”

This year, he said, the Pink Triangle symbolizes resistance from its perch on the highest point of San Francisco, which can be seen for 20 miles away on a clear day, according to Carney.

It’s “barrels of fun,” he said.

The Pink Triangle will overlook downtown San Francisco and the Castro district through Sunday evening. Volunteers are needed to break it down between 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. More information is available online.

President Donald Trump appeared to acknowledge Russian meddling in the presidential election on Twitter Friday, attacking former President Barack Obama.

"Just out," Trump tweeted, "The Obama Administration knew far in advance of November 8th about election meddling by Russia. Did nothing about it. WHY?"

Trump may have been referencing a Washington Post report that the CIA had confirmed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s direct influence on his government's alleged interference in the 2016 election.

Trump on Saturday tried to shift the attention on the Obama administration for Russian interference. "Focus on them, not T!" the president tweeted.

SDPD Hosts Unity Softball Games

The San Diego Police Department played host in the third annual San Diego Unity Games, pitting community organizations against law enforcement for a friendly game of softball.

The games, which were more about creating a community dialogue and friendship than competition, took place at the Willie Henderson Sports Complex on 45th Street Saturday.

“What it does for the kids is says ‘look it’s okay to talk to police,’” Reginald Washington, CEO of Project Aware Enterprises, an organization that educates at-risk youth to become community leaders. “You don’t see that you are going to be disrespected you don’t see yourself being outcast. Look I’m an individual who has worked in the community and was involved with gangs, and for me to be here working with them and with you, it’s the bridge we need.”

'Tacos at Every Mosque' Unites Two Cultures for Ramadan

Ramadan and halal tacos?

For many San Diego Muslims breaking their fast Saturday night it might just be their food of choice.

‘Tacos at Every Mosque,’ the brainchild of activist Rida Hamida, was a tongue-in-cheek response to a comment by Trump supporter Marco Gutierrez in a 2016 MSNBC interview in which he called Latin culture “imposing” and said, “if you don't do something you're going to have taco trucks on every corner."

“What better way to learn from another culture and build from that than to break bread?” says Tony Ley of Corozon de Torta, whose truck was parked outside of the Islamic Center of San Diego off Balboa Avenue for the last night of Ramadan.

“This is definitely a shared moment of healing,” Hamida says, “When you eat together you're experiencing this shared nurturing of the soul.”

This is Hamida’s fourth event and first in San Diego. They've had one in Santa Ana and two others in Garden Grove during Ramadan. “We also have to nurture one another by getting to know one another and taking care of one another,” she says.

Ley says he crosses the border from Mexico with his taco truck every day.

“The Muslim community here in America [are], for the most part, immigrants. And my parents were immigrants, too, and I know what it's like to be the butt of prejudice because of where you're from,” he says. “So if I can learn from them today and every day, it makes me a better American.”

He says food has a funny way of uniting people, and it’s special to him to see their two different cultures coming together. “These two communities in particular were sort of picked on during the electoral process last year, and if we can unite and show strength through food it’s an excellent opportunity for us to do so.”

'Lets Not Rush This': Senators Urge Health Care Vote Delay

Senators on both sides of the aisle can agree on at least one thing: rushing a vote on health care would be ill-advised, NBC News reported.

Republican senators unveiled their version of the health bill on Thursday, and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has indicated he wants to see a vote before the end of this week.

Both Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wisc., and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who each have expressed serious reservations with the bill for very different reasons, said during exclusive interviews on Sunday's "Meet The Press" that rushing a vote before the July 4th recess would be unwise.

“There’s no way we should be voting on this next week,” Johnson told host Chuck Todd. “I have a hard time believing my Wisconsin constituents or even myself will have enough time to evaluate this for even a motion to proceed... let’s not rush this.”

Sanders added: "There is no way on God’s Earth that this bill should be passed this week. The people of Wisconsin don’t know what’s in it, the people of Vermont don’t know what’s in it. We need a serious discussion."

Surf dog Ricochet traded in her long board for a paddle board Sunday for a special Waves of Empowerment program.

The program, called Stand Up with a Warrior, matches children with special needs, combat vets and other adults with disabilities together as a mentorship opportunity.

People of all ages spent the day paddle boarding and wake boarding at the Carlsbad Lagoon. Ricochet made several trips out on a paddle board, accompanying children with special needs.

Jim Von Normann described the event as healing and empowering.

“It’s like getting to the finish line,” Von Normann said. “And turning around and seeing who we can help across.”

Von Normann is a recent amputee who lost his leg after a drunk driver hit him in 2015.

If it weren’t for Ricochet, he would have gone to a much darker place, he said. But the Surf Dog helped him gain confidence. Von Normann met Ricochet in 2016 at Lake Tahoe when he tried to wake board for the first time since his accident.

“The healing medium of water is something that has helped me big time,” Von Normann said. “I can push limits that I wouldn’t on the pavement or snow.”

The event was organized by the Surf Dog Ricochet Organization, an organization aimed at helping those with social anxieties, special needs, PTSD or wounded warriors through water sports activities.

Ricochet is the only Surf-ice dog in the country. She began her therapy in 2009 after independently jumping on a surfboard with a boy who is quadriplegic and helping him surf. Since then she’s helped thousands of other people through adaptive surfing.

Diner Finds Dead Frog in Salad at LA Restaurant

Officials with the BJ's Restaurants chain said they're investigating how a dead frog wound up in a diner's salad at one of the company's locations in West Covina, Los Angeles County.

Shawna Cepeda posted a picture of her salad with a frog that appeared to be the size of two croutons in a Yelp review on June 14. Cepeda couldn't be reached Saturday, but in her Yelp post, she said she ate at the restaurant the previous night and ordered a side salad.

"I was about four bites into it and I noticed it tasted a little different," she wrote. "I thought maybe the ranch dressing was a little bitter, and after mixing the salad around some more I found a dead baby frog."

The manager offered to comp her meal, which she declined.

She said corporate apologized and sent her a $50 gift card.

Krysteen Romero, the general manager at the restaurant, posted a comment on Cepeda's Yelp page more than a week later apologizing and offering to speak to her directly.

In a statement issued to NBC4, BJ's Chief Financial Officer Greg Levin said the company takes this seriously and they "have launched an internal investigation including discussions with our suppliers and distributors to ensure that nothing like this happens in the future."

Dangerous Firecracker Prank in Alpine Has Neighbors Worried

Surveillance video captured three people lighting firecrackers dangerously close to homes in Alpine last week, and residents are concerned those responsible could do serious damage and spark a fire.

Alpine resident Jill DePrizio has several surveillance cameras capturing action outside her home.  "We look at them for all sorts of silly things but this one just happened to catch something a little more important," she said.

In the middle of the night last week, neighbors awoke to loud booms right outside.

The next morning, DePrizio checked her footage and couldn't believe what she saw. "The driver goes as well and in a minute you'll see a bright light from lighting the firecracker,” she said as she showed NBC 7 the surveillance video.

She explained the video shows three men walking up to a house and lighting a firecracker in between the car parked in the driveway and the garage.  The homeowner’s children sleep in the bedroom above the garage.  The homeowner found a firecracker on her car the next morning, according to DePrizio. "They start to drive off and then they stop.  You can see his cell phone hanging out the window. They actually back the car up and the gentleman in the backseat gets out of the car and goes back to record it until they finish seeing the fireworks go off," DePrizio explained.

Another house in the quiet neighborhood on River Dance Court was also a target. The culprits haven't been caught, making neighbors fearful they may strike again. "Alpine has had some major fires over the years, we certainly don't want another one," said neighbor David Osier.

"I lost my house in the 2003 fires, so anytime we have high fire danger like we have now, seeing something like this happen is a traumatic event for somebody like myself," added DePrizio.

Any information about this incident, you’re asked to call the San Diego County Sheriff's Alpine Station, (619) 659-2600.
