A social media app may have helped law enforcement make an arrest in a possible homicide investigation in Escondido.

According to the Escondido Police Department (EPD), witnesses reported seeing a possible murder of a friend via Snapchat on Saturday around 3 p.m.

Police were alerted to the incident by the San Diego County Sheriff's Department (SDSO).

The witnesses identified the suspect as 19-year-old Salvador Sanchez from Escondido.

Sanchez allegedly got into a disagreement with the victim, a man, while drinking in Escondido, police said. During a fight, Sanchez is suspected of killing the victim, and then dumping the body in the 49100 block of E. Paradise Creek Lane in Valley Center.

Escondido Police Lt. Justin Murphy told NBC 7, Sanchez allegedly only posted text statements on Snapchat that alluded to the victim's possible death. There were no photos or video depicting the incident.

Witnesses, who knew the suspect and the victim, reported the incident.

The victim's body was found Sunday. The Medical Examiner's Office is working to figure out the cause of death.

Police arrested Sanchez Sunday just before 3 p.m. and booked him into Vista Jail.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact Detective John O'Donnell at (760)839-4756.

Pictures on Snapchat, taken just a few hours before a woman was killed in a mass shooting at an apartment complex in University City, showed the group having fun at the pool.

Monique Clark was injured when the gunman, 49-year-old Peter Selis, opened fire in a the pool party at the La Jolla Crossroads apartment complex. She later died at the hospital.

"When I walked in the party, she was the first one to greet me. You know, to give her a big hug," said Drew Phillips, a friend of Clark’s.

Seven other people were injured, and one person was shot at but not hurt, San Diego police said.

Willie Mayo told NBC 7, they were celebrating Mayo’s best friend Kion's birthday Sunday evening when the shooting began. Mayo was not at the pool during the shooting, but said he is now feeling the aftermath firsthand.

"Our circle of friends are like family, they're like family to us. They were having a good time. I was kind of jealous I wasn't there," Mayo said. "The next day, I was looking at Snapchat, talking to Kion and other friends and it was just like whoa, 'Is this real or is this fake.'"

Phillips and Mayo told NBC 7, Clark was a mother and a dear friend to many.

"She has kids, a little one, maybe like five or six-years-old. So, very sad.  Monique's a good person too, very nice. So, still trying to take it all in," said Mayo.

"Monique Clark was the nicest person you'd ever want to meet. She truly was; and she didn't deserve it...she didn't deserve it," added Phillips.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for the victims to help with all of the medical costs.

House Republicans are working to get enough votes to pass their amended health care bill this week, NBC News reported.

GOP leaders are hoping to get 216 Republicans to vote in favor of the new plan. So far, 20 Republicans have told NBC News they plan to vote against it, including Charlie Dent (R-PA), David Young (R-IA) and Leonard Lance (R-NJ).

In order for the bill to pass, there can only be 22 "no" votes from Republicans.

This third round for Republicans comes after the American Health Care Act failed to reach the floor for a vote and a subsequent attempt to revive it died before Congress went into a two-week recess.

A man killed in a fatal motorcycle accident in Escondido was identified Monday as a beloved, active duty Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton.

Steven Michael Cox, 26, and his friend were riding their motorcycles together on San Pasqual Road Sunday afternoon when he lost control and drove off the road, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner.

First responders were called to the 18200 block of San Pasqual Valley Road on Sunday at about 4:45 p.m.

When paramedics arrived, they found Cox dead at the scene. The San Pasqual Valley Road was closed from Ramona Highlands Drive to Bandy Canyon Road.

"Brother when I got that call this morning I didn't believe it. I still can't. You and I have been through more together than anyone I know in my life. I love you brother, you were my best friend, and I know you had my back no matter what happened," said Bryan Adams, a close friend of the victim, in a Facebook post.

"From us living together in the same house to watching you leave units and further your career. Man I will never find another brother like you. You were one of a kind to me," continued Adams in the post.

Some of his fellow marines posted a statement in a Facebook group for graduates of Charlie Company - Platoon 1082 that said, "Steven Cox was a presence like no other. I remember all too clearly how he walked around like he owned the whole Marine Corps. I remember his kindness, in the midst of the shared chaos that we all endured together."

"I remember his crooked, infectious smile. Steven has left behind a wife, two daughters and a son," continued the statement. "He will be sorely, painfully missed."

City officials and law enforcement condemned the deadly shooting at the La Jolla Crossroads apartment complex, and expressed their condolences for the victims Monday.

"This was a truly horrific and disturbing act. We pray for the victims and thank our first responders," said Mayor Kevin Faulconer, in a statement. "Our city rejects this senseless violence."

"My condolences to the family and friends of the woman killed in the senseless shooting in University City," said City Council President Myrtle Cole, in a statement. "I pray for healing of all the injured."

"It's especially awful to think that such a brutal attack can happen at a birthday party in the heart of our community. This is a tragic reminder that even a city as prosperous and peaceful as San Diego is not immune to senseless acts of violence such as this," said U.S. Congressman Scott Peters, in a statement.

"The true spirit of San Diego is reflected not in this attack, but in what followed: brave police officers and first responders swiftly confronting danger to prevent further tragedy, friends and neighbors coming to each other's aid. That is the San Diego that I know and love," continued Peters' statement.

"As a mother and a grandmother, I cannot think of anything more devastating than losing a loved one to senseless gun violence. I offer my deepest condolences to the family of the victim who passed away as a result of yesterday's shooting at La Jolla Crossroads. I am sending thoughts and prayers to the other victims currently receiving medical care," said City Councilmember Barbara Bry.

"Public safety is the number one responsibility of local government, and as a Councilmember and chair of the Budget Committee, I will work with my colleagues to ensure that our public safety personnel has the resources it needs to keep our community safe," said Bry.

"I am still in shock that a shooting of this magnitude happened right here in San Diego, and there are many unanswered questions. The SDPD is continuing its thorough investigation, and my office is here as a resource to them and to the constituents of my district as we grapple with this tragedy," continued Bry.

"All of our thoughts and prayers at the SDPD are with the victims, their families and everyone affected by this terrible crime," said Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman.

"A terrible act of violence in our city today. Thankful for the SDPD and SDFD who rushed to the aid of victims," said SDFD Chief Brian Fennessy, in a statement.

Gunman Wanted Ex to Hear Rampage: SDPD Chief

The gunman involved in a mass shooting in San Diego called his ex-girlfriend after the shooting began and wanted her to hear the rampage, San Diego's police chief said Monday.

Peter Selis, 49, was described by witnesses as calm. One person even said Selis had a smirk on his face during the shooting. Another said he held a beer in one hand and his gun in another.

One woman has died and seven other people were hospitalized with gunshot wounds or broken bones following Sunday's mass shooting at the La Jolla Crossroads apartment complex.

The shooting occurred inside the pool area where people were attending a birthday party.

San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said Selis was despondent over a recent breakup with a girlfriend.

Moments before officer arrived, Selis, "took out a cell phone and he called his ex-girlfriend,” Zimmerman said. “Selis told his ex-girlfriend that he had just shot two people and that police had arrived on the scene.”

Zimmerman said Selis stayed on the phone with his ex girlfriend as the shooting continued.

“It was apparent that Selis wanted his ex-girlfriend to listen in as he carried out his rampage,” she said.

The victims just happened to be present, she added.

“There is zero information to indicate that race played a factor in this terrible and horrific crime,” she said. “The victims were targeted for no other reason but their mere presence of the vicinity of the suspect.”

Zimmerman said Selis pointed his weapon at her officers then three officers fired, shooting and killing the suspect.

One witness said the tenant who was celebrating his birthday walked up to Selis and invited him to join the celebration. The witness said Selis then lifted up his shirt, took out a gun and shot the tenant in the stomach.

The semi-automatic gun, a Sig Sauer .45, was bought almost three years ago, exactly, Zimmerman said.

He continued shooting people until he was out of bullets, according to the witness.

Another witness described the suspect as calm with a smirk on his face during the shooting.

A woman who was in the pool area at the time of the shooting said she was able to get away from the shooter while he was reloading his gun.

Selis lived at the complex located on Judicial Drive, north of Nobel Drive and south of Miramar Road and west of Interstate 805.

Seven adults were taken to area hospitals with gunshot wounds. One woman died of her injuries and several others remain in critical condition, according to Zimmerman, who did not identify the victims.

One man broke his arm while fleeing and went to a hospital as well.

Selis is the brother of the San Diego-based country singer Eve Selis, who has won multiple San Diego Music Awards over the years and was nominated this year for Best Country or Americana Album, for “See Me With Your Heart.” According to her website, she has shared bills with a variety of big names, including Heart, the Doobie Brothers, Kenny Loggins and many others.

Victim in Mass Shooting Rampage Thanks First Responders

One of the victims of a San Diego mass shooting rampage thanked first responders and hospital staff Monday, saying their efforts helped save his life and the lives of his friends.

Thomas Blea, 34, was visibly emotional as he described the moments after he was shot while celebrating a friend's birthday Sunday in University City.

Blea suffered a leg injury when a man opened fire near the pool at the La Jolla Crossroads apartment complex. One victim was killed and six others were hospitalized with gunshot wounds. Another person suffered a broken bone attempting to flee. An additional victim - a security guard - was shot at but not injured.

Blea, surrounded by friends, thanked first responders and hospital staff for getting him through the ordeal.

"I want to give thanks to the San Diego Police Department, the fire department, and I can't remember the officer's name but he was great," Blea said. "The staff here at Scripps was great. They welcomed me, they did above and beyond, everybody’s done above and beyond."

Blea said he still had to speak with all his friends hurt in the shooting, but was happy most were going to be okay.

"It was a terrible experience that we went through but I'm glad that I'm alright, and I'm glad that most of my friends are alright, I still gotta visit them," he said.

The shooting victim added that the hospital went out of their way to treat him like family.

"But again, the hospital, did above and beyond," Blea said. "I mean, I was alone at one point, and they comforted me, not just treated me like a patient, they treated (me like) more than that."

At the press conference, hospital officials and trauma surgeons said four victims were sent to Scripps La Jolla, two to Scripps Mercy and the rest to Sharp Memorial Hospital.

The two victims sent to Scripps Mercy were suffering from life-threatening injuries when they were admitted, a trauma surgeon said.

Doctors are cautiously optimistic that they will recover after surgery and medical attention. The victims are in critical condition at this time.

Authorities say the gunman, 49-year-old Peter Selis, was described by witnesses as calm when he held a beer in his hand and opened fire in the upscale apartment complex.

Selis called his ex-girlfriend after the shooting began and wanted her to hear the rampage, San Diego's police chief said Monday.

Chief Shelley Zimmerman said Selis was despondent over a recent breakup with a girlfriend.

Moments before officer arrived, Selis, "took out a cell phone and he called his ex-girlfriend,” Zimmerman said. “Selis told his ex-girlfriend that he had just shot two people and that police had arrived on the scene.”

Zimmerman said Selis stayed on the phone with his ex-girlfriend as the shooting continued.

“It was apparent that Selis wanted his ex-girlfriend to listen in as he carried out his rampage,” she said.

The victims just happened to be present, she added.

San Diego Fire-Rescue Chief Brian Fennessey said one of the security guards at the apartment complex helped rescue three victims, using a motorized cart to transport them to where ambulances and first responders were waiting to come into the complex.

Blea said he wanted to thank that security guard in person, as well as a police officer who helped him and his friends.

"That guy saved us a lot of time, getting us to the fire department in a safe zone, and getting us over here," Blea said of the security guard. "Everybody was great, it was a team effort all around, from the police department, one of the officers was with us the whole time, he was amazing, I don’t remember his name, but that guy was amazing."

Demetrius Griffin, Blea's friend, was also present at the shooting. He said the families of the victims have setting up a combined GoFundMe for all victims and their medical expenses. To donate, click here.

'Broke My Heart': Mass Shooting Victim Worked With Shooter

The victim of a mass shooting at a University City apartment complex said he worked with the shooter and remembers him as being a nice guy.

“Broke my heart. I couldn’t believe it," Drew Phillips told NBC 7, in an interview Monday.

Phillips, 39, was attending a birthday pool party for a friend he has known for 15 years at the La Jolla Crossroads apartments.

The gunman, identified as 49-year-old Peter Selis, opened fire at the party, killing one woman and injuring seven other people. Another ninth person was shot at but not injured in the shooting, police said.

Selis lived at the apartment complex but he was not a guest at the party.

"Pete was over there, just firing into the crowd," Phillips said, describing the moments after the shooting started.

He added that at first, he thought it was fireworks for his friend's birthday. But he quickly realized that the sounds were actually gunshots.

According to San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman, Selis called his ex-girlfriend after the shooting began because he wanted her to hear the rampage.

Phillips told NBC 7, he used to work with Selis at Mossy Ford five years ago.

"If I had known if it was Pete sitting there, I would have came and spoke. to him...because the Pete that I remember was a great guy," Phillips said.

He said if he had a chance to approach Selis before the incident, maybe things would have turned out differently.

"If I went over there and maybe saw the gun on his lap...I probably would have been like 'Hey Pete, what are you doing? These are my friends. What are you doing,'" Phillips added. "Maybe that would’ve been enough to reel him off the edge."

He described the woman killed as the "nicest person you ever met" and was the first person to greet him at the party.

"She just didn’t deserve it," he said.

Phillips jumped over the wall to escape during the shooting but a friend who was behind him was shot.

He believes that Selis did not aim for him, instead shooting at people on either side of him.

"And I'm a pretty big target," he said, adding that the odds were against him.

Phillips said once he got over the wall, he saw his friend, injured and lying on the ground. He administered first aid to the man until paramedics arrived on scene.

"I ain’t no hero. I did what anybody would’ve done," he said. "You see someone who needs help so you just help them."

He added that in the moment, he wasn't worried about what would happen to him and just wanted to help the other victim.

A group of good Samaritans saved an infant and a 2-year-old from drowning inside an upside down pickup that was filling with rushing water during severe storms in North Texas Saturday.

The rescue was caught on video.

Emily Ocheltree, 21, told Telemundo 39's Carlos Zapata she and her family were on their way to a storm shelter when powerful winds and heavy rain caught up with their vehicle, causing her husband, Phillip, 25, to lose control.

The heart-wrenching video shows a group of people who stopped to rescue the family outside Myrtle Springs.

[[420947123,C]]

The rushing water made it difficult to open the vehicle's doors.

Thomas Mitchell, the man who shot the video, said the baby was limp and appeared to be turning bluish-gray when pulled from the vehicle.

At one point, Mitchell put the phone in his pocket to help give the baby CPR, but he kept the recording going and we can hear what happened.

"It was something that I can't believe happened," Enrique Martinez, overcome with emotion, told NBC News on Monday. "People were crying, there was a lot of confusion. The parents were still in the car at the time. Everyone was trying to do as much as they could do."

The good Samaritans performed CPR as a woman nearby prayed for Jesus to let the baby breathe.

[[420950243,C]]

"When they said they are breathing, I said, 'Please, let me have my babies, let them be in my arms," Emily Ocheltree said. "I see my daughter's lifeless body just sitting on the back of the truck, and you just don't know what to do. I can't go over there. It's a miracle what they did."

"There's no debt in the world that I could repay them," she said.

At last check, both children were recovering in the hospital.

The storms the Ocheltree's were caught in is the same one that spawned seven tornadoes Saturday night in North Texas that killed four people and injured dozens of others.

Federal Jury Convicts Man in Bizarre Baja Homicide

A San Diego man accused of living a double life and brutally killing a wealthy Texas man in Mexico more than a year ago in order to inherit his estate, has been convicted of murder.

David Enrique Meza, and his then-girlfriend, Taylor Marie Langston, were indicted in the December 2015 death of 52-year-old Jake Clyde Merendino.

Because Merendino was killed in Baja, California, the trial is in federal court. The jury convicted Meza of both charges: one count of Interstate or Foreign Domestic Violence Resulting in Murder and one count of Conspiracy to Obstruct Justice.

The jury returned the verdict on the second anniversary of Merendino's death.

“David Meza took the life of a man who cared for him, lavished him with expensive gifts and who wanted to create a life with him,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Alana W. Robinson in a statement. “On this day, the second anniversary of Jake Merendino’s death, we salute the jury for delivering justice to a greedy killer who will now have to answer for his cruelty.”

Prosecutors describe the fatal stabbing of the wealthy Merendino as "a love affair gone wrong."

Meza and Langston intended to take advantage of Merendino and for Meza to eventually kill Merendino in the early hours of May 2, 2015 in Baja California.

Merendino’s body was found in a ravine near the highway that links Rosarito and Ensenada, according to the FBI.

Meza and Langston were captured on video re-entering the U.S. soon after, according to investigators.

When questioned by investigators, Meza and Langston allegedly claimed they had been visiting with a friend named “Joe” in Tijuana at the time of Merendino’s murder.

But Foster said phone records and Facebook posts contradicted that alibi, and “Joe” told investigators he had not seen the couple for a year and a half and they have never visited his home.

The prosecution’s evidence included text messages sent by Meza to Merendino professing his love for him. Messages were also shared in which Meza expressed his disdain for Merendino to his then-pregnant fiancée

Documentation was also shown to the jury suggesting Meza was the sole beneficiary of Merendino’s Baja condo, worth nearly $300,000.

Langston entered a plea agreement in February. The San Diego-Union Tribune reports Langston pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice.

Meza's attorney argued it would be difficult for Meza to drag Merendino's body since the victim was 6-foot, 4-inches tall and approximately 310 pounds.

The attorney also told jurors there is no DNA evidence linking Meza to the crime.

Meza will be sentenced on Aug. 7 at 9 a.m.

Police officers roped off a street in an Oceanside neighborhood Tuesday as they launched an investigation into the suspicious death of a young man found bloodied on a lawn.

The Oceanside Police Department (OPD) confirmed that officers with the Crimes of Violence Unit were called to the 2000 block of S. Tremont Street just after 8 a.m. after someone reported an injured man lying in the grass near homes.

OPD Officer Kathleen Vincent said that when officers arrived, they discovered the 18-year-old victim on the ground. He had blood on his face and had suffered abrasions to his arm. The young man was declared dead at the scene, police said.

He was later identified as 18-year-old Anthony Calvert.

Calvert's friends and family came throughout the day to put flowers at the place where his body was found.

“He had a humble heart. He just cared about a bunch of people. He was never so hateful," said Alexis Guerrero, a friend of Calvert's.

“He was an awesome kid. I just can’t believe that he’s not going to be around anymore. It’s just too sad," friend Tina Bitters said through tears.

At this point, the OPD said the victim’s death is considered suspicious, though his cause of death has not been determined just yet.

No further details were released, including the victim’s name. His loved ones, who stopped near the scene Tuesday, told NBC 7 the young man was a graduate of Oceanside High School.

As of 11:20 a.m., no arrests had been made in connection with this case.

Investigators believe the victim was hurt near a home a few blocks away from where his body was found. Police are in the process of obtaining a search warrant for the property.

Anyone with information can reach out to the OPD at (760) 435-4911.

Plane Passengers' Pre-Flight Fistfight Caught on Camera

A pre-flight fistfight was captured on camera Monday on board an All Nippon Airways plane that was about to take off from Tokyo to Los Angeles.

The video shows two passengers brawling on Flight No. 6 from Narita International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport. The airline said a man seen in the video wearing a red shirt was taken into custody, but details regarding charges were not immediately available.

"All Nippon Airways apologizes to our passengers on Flight No. 6 to Los Angeles for the pre-flight incident," ANA said in a statement issued Tuesday. "The individuals involved have been dealt with appropriately by local law enforcement."

NBC4 is attempting to obtain more details from Narita Airport Police.

As for the individual in custody, the airline statement said, "He was incoherent and physically violent and aggressive to other passengers." He was identified by the airline only as a U.S. citizen.

Passenger Corey Hour, who captured the video, told NBC News the "irate" man appeared to assault other passengers before takeoff, which was delayed by about 50 minutes due to weather issues. The airline told NBC4 the man was involved in confrontations with at least one woman and three men before takeoff.

Another passenger, the man seen in the dark shirt in the video, intervened, Hour said.

"The moment I heard something vocally from him was when he was leaning over the back of the seat, speaking to the man in the black shirt, saying, 'Where are you from? And, then immediately following that with, 'I'm going to kill you,'" Hour said. "The gentleman in the black was fighting defensively. He wasn't trying to start anything. He was a very calm, collected individual."

Hour said adults were protecting children, who can be heard crying on his video, as the men exchanged blows.

"There was a child in the row right in front," Hour said. "I remember his mom hunched over, cradling the child and his grandmother shielding them."

The altercation appeared to end when the man was escorted to the front of the passenger cabin, but he soon returned to exchange more punches.

"He was trying to continue fighting the gentleman," Hour told NBC News. "The flight attendants were in the middle of it."

At that point, Hour said he decided to stop recording and help restrain the passenger. When he was told to leave the plane, Hour said the man responded, "You think I'm crazy? The government is crazy."

After the man was taken into custody, other passengers continued on their flight to LAX.
