Cubs Arrive in DC for White House Visit

The Chicago Cubs arrived to the nation's capital Sunday night ahead of a planned Monday visit with President Barack Obama at the White House in the final days of his presidency.

President Obama will honor the Cubs during a ceremony that will take place at 12:05 p.m. CT in the East Room of the White House to celebrate the team's 2016 World Series championship. NBC Chicago will offer a live stream with coverage of the visit here.

“We’re excited,” shortstop Addison Russell said. “There’s probably about three people that I would get star-struck by, and he’s one of them.”

After the ceremony, the Cubs are expected to visit patients at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington, D.C., before returning to Chicago, according to MLB officials.

"The visit will continue the tradition begun by President Obama for honoring sports teams for their efforts to give back to their communities," a statement from the White House said.

It's a move that is is slightly unusual, as the reigning World Series champions normally make the traditional White House visit during the following MLB season. The Cubs, who ended a 108-year title drought in Game 7 against the Cleveland Indians, were hoping to get to Washington, D.C., before Obama left office. Though the president is a White Sox fan, he calls Chicago home and rooted for the North Siders since his team didn't make the playoffs.

The president invited the Cubs to the White House in a phone call to Joe Maddon following the team's victory, and with the club all assembled in Chicago for this weekend's Cubs Convention, arranging travel to Washington D.C. was a solution that worked out well for the team to see the president.

While the Cubs visit to the White House comes five days before President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration, the team will still have a connection to the new administration. Trump has nominated Cubs co-owner Todd Ricketts as deputy commerce secretary. Ricketts will join his sister, co-owner Laura Ricketts, brother, co-owner Tom Ricketts, and the team at the presidential reception.

The Cubs will be the second Chicago team to visit the Obama's White House. The president also hosted the Chicago Blackhawks after their three Stanley Cup championships since 2010.

John Lewis Leads Charge Against Trump as US Marks MLK Day

John Lewis may turn 77 next month — but he's energized and ready to rumble as Donald Trump's presidency approaches, NBC News reported. As America honors the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Lewis — member of Congress, Freedom Rider, top organizer of the 1963 March on Washington — is taking on a new fight.

Lewis, D-Georgia, said in an interview on NBC News' "Meet the Press" on Sunday, that he doesn't believe Trump is a "legitimate president" and that he wouldn't be attending the presidential inauguration for the first time in his 30-year political career.

Lewis is set to speak to be the keynote speaker for the Martin Luther King Scholarship Breakfast in Miami on Monday. Lewis is the final surviving member of the Big Six, a group of civil rights leaders, including King, that led the massive March on Washington, D.C., in 1963. Lewis, the youngest member of the Big Six at age 23, took to the same podium where King gave his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech.

In 1965, Lewis was severely injured by Alabama state troopers during a march for voting rights from Selma to Montgomery. "When I go back, I remember. The bridge for me is almost a sacred place," he said, referring to the Edmund Pettus Bridge, where protesters were met with violence. "That's where some of us gave a little blood and where some people almost died."

A civil rights icon will be in South Florida Monday – just days after a firestorm erupted over comments he made regarding President-elect Donald Trump.

U.S. Rep. John Lewis, who has served in Congress for three decades after working for years to end racial segregation, is scheduled as the keynote speaker for the city of Miami's MLK Day breakfast.

Friday, Lewis sat down with NBC’s Chuck Todd and questioned Trump’s legitimacy as president, adding he plans to join with other Democrats in boycotting Trump’s inauguration.

The president-elect responded to the comments on Twitter, saying in part that Lewis should “spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to Mention crime infested)." Those comments have been condemned by members of both parties.

At the breakfast, Florida Senator Marco Rubio said he wished Lewis would reconsider and attend the inaguration while also being critical of Trump's response.

"I don't agree with him (Rep. Lewis) that it's an illegitimate result, but I do believe, as I said in the middle of the campaign in October, that foreign intelligence agencies and a foreign government wanted to influence public opinion in America and create chaos and instability in our electoral process. Of that I have no doubt," Rubio said.

Lewis was one of the organizers of 1963’s March on Washington, where Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. He was involved in working closely with leaders such as King, Rosa Parks and James Farmer among others.

A food service employee was in critical condition after he was repeatedly struck with a hammer in an unprovoked attack Monday in North Park, confirmed San Diego Police (SDPD).

The employee of Jack's Muffler was sitting inside the restaurant by himself eating a snack when the suspect appeared, according to the SDPD. He walked straight up to him and struck him in the head seven times, until he collapsed on the floor.

After the initial attack, the suspect went into the office for less than a minute but did not take anything, said SDPD officers. Then, surveillance video shows he came back, stood over the victim and struck him six more times in the head with the hammer as the victim lay motionless on the ground.

The suspect calmly walks away, placing the hammer in his backpack and walking westbound on the 2100 block of University Avenue, according to the SDPD.

A passerby later saw the injured victim and alerted the authorities. Fire and paramedics were called to the scene and took the victim to a nearby hospital.

When police officers arrived they found a bloody crime scene, where the violent act took place. By reviewing the surveillance camera footage, they described the suspect as a balding white man, age 30 to 40, with very short blonde hair. He was wearing a black jacket, blue jeans and a black backpack.

A number of flights were delayed on Monday morning after what was initially thought to be a security issue at the San Diego International Airport.

The situation started at about 10 a.m., when a person went through a secured door at Terminal 2 West, triggering an alarm, airport officials said.

The security issue prompted the delay of numerous flights and TSA officials to halt security screenings.

The man was detained and questioned, and by 11:05 a.m., screening of passengers resumed.

Harbor police said the man was apparently a tourist who didn't speak English and went through the wrong door. He was not charged with any crimes.

Airport officials expect minor delays the rest of the day as operations resume to normal.

The San Diego Air & Space Museum is mourning the passing of the last astronaut to walk on the moon, Gene Cernan, who was placed on the International Air and Space Hall of Fame in 2007.

Cernan flew to the moon not once but twice, and was revered for being the second person to walk in space and the last person to leave his footsteps on the moon, said museum officials.

"Gene Cernan was a true American hero who served his country with great distinction as a highly decorated Naval Aviator and astronaut, including one of only a dozen people to walk on the moon," said Jim Kidrick, President and CEO of the San Diego Air & Space Museum, in a statement.

"As a member of the International Air & Space Hall of Fame, a Naval Aviator who trained right here in San Diego, and as a regular visitor to our Museum, Gene will always hold a special place at the San Diego Air & Space Museum," said Kidrick.

The Education Director at the museum recounted Cernan passionately retelling his experience exploring the moon to captivated audiences.

"As the last person to stand on the surface of the Moon, Gene Cernan spent the rest of his life conveying his vivid experiences in ways that brought a tear to the eye of most audience members," explained Francis French, Education Director at the San Diego Air & Space Museum and space historian, in a statement.

"He felt a responsibility not only to share his memories, but also to inspire young people to become explorers. He dearly hoped that he would live to see someone else take his unwanted title of the last person to stand on the moon: It is very saddening that he did not live to see this happen," said French.

In February, the San Diego Air & Space Museum will open an exhibit called "Be the Astronaut," featuring a fun, interactive space adventure, said museum officials. It will involve launching a rocket, piloting a spaceship and driving a rover.

The Chargers’ marketing campaign doesn’t seem to be going well if you take a look at social media.

Over the weekend, an ESPN writer shared on Twitter how the Bolts are sponsoring Instagram and Facebook posts in the LA market – and how they’re getting, um, lackluster response.

Then, a scroll through the comments on recent posts about the Chargers’ new head coach, Anthony Lynn, shows similar vitriol.

The Chargers aren’t even safe from criticism when posting about Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The team tweeted a poignant and well-known quote from King on Monday.

They were quickly met with this reply tweet as well as a dozen other not-so-positive responses.

Another tweet by the Bolts’ community Twitter account, which still read “San Diego Chargers in the Community,” about the team’s MLK Day parade in Los Angeles sparked another forum of snark.

How do you think the team should respond to the flood of negative comments on social media? Let us know in the comments section below.
