Dikembe Mutombo may have an easy smile and famous gravelly laugh, but the NBA Hall of Famer does not mess around.

"That African boy does not know how to play basketball," Mutombo recalls naysayers claiming when he was drafted by the Denver Nuggets fourth overall in 1991, according to NBC News.

The Georgetown graduate proved them wrong and went on to become an eight-time all-star and one of most celebrated defensive players in the sport's history.

Mutombo retired in 2009, and traded in his jersey for expensive blue suits. His mission is now saving and improving lives, not blocking shots, and he's using his stature and fame to help some of the world's poorest and most vulnerable — including building a state-of-the-art hospital to help the poor and sick in his native Democratic Republic of Congo that Mutombo says people told him he was "crazy" for attempting.

A llama brought in for a photo shoot may just be the zaniest expense request of 2016, according to a survey of more than 430 business travelers, NBC News reports.

A $28,000 bottle-service tab, a blow-up doll and personalized bobblehead figurines also made the list of oddest expenses that the travelers or a colleague tried to push through, per the survey by travel and expense management firm Certify.

Workers trying to expense something offbeat or expensive, or pass off personal expenses as something related to work, can be incurring a risk, experts say.

"You might think of it as a joke, but it could come back to haunt you in the office," said Dan Schawbel, author of "Promote Yourself: The New Rules for Career Success."

A winter storm brought a white Christmas to the northern Plains on Sunday, with fierce blizzard conditions that threatened holiday travel plans as a wintry mix was expected to move further east, NBC News reported.

Blizzard warnings were in effect in eastern Montana and swaths of North and South Dakota on Sunday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service, with winter storm warnings issued in Minnesota, Wyoming and parts of Northern Nebraska.

The worst of storm was battering the Dakotas with heavy snow and ice, potentially stranding those trying to get home from grandma's house — or anywhere else — according to the Weather Channel.

"I don't think anybody's going to be going anywhere, not if they're smart," said John Rowe, a senior meteorologist at the Weather Channel.

Christmas Dinners for Vets, Needy Hosted Across County

In the spirit of Christmas and togetherness, meals and dinners were provided to San Diegans all across the county.

The Salvation Army hosted their 33rd annual Christmas dinner for the homeless and needy at Golden Hall in downtown. Several hundred volunteers served the guests who feasted on turkey, dinner rolls, mashed potatoes and other comfort foods.

Philanthropist Joan Kroc brought the tradition to Golden Hall in 1983 when she hosted the first dinner to make sure no one spent Christmas alone.

The Rise &Shine Restaurant Group will hold their sixth annual free Veterans Christmas Dinner at BRICK Liberty Station from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday for 500 local veterans and their families.

Restaurateur Johan Engman says this Christmas will be the largest number of veterans fed yet as the event has outgrown its space from last year.

The dinner is in partnership with Wounded Warrior Project and Three Wise Men Veterans Foundation.

The nonprofit Serving Seniors also provided holiday meals to around 300 low-income elderly people at the West Senior Wellness Center on 4th Avenue downtown.

Julia Meshack, 65, says the senior center is like an extended family for people like her who don't necessarily have their own families near at Christmastime or who have lost family members.

"This is one of the few places that I feel I’m being appreciated for being a senior," she tells NBC 7.

The senior, who is grateful for the Christmas dinner and the other services the nonprofit provides, has sage advice that's relevant all year round. “The important thing," she says, "is to enjoy life.”

Christmas Eve is the time for families to come together, but one family's plans to unite with family ended in tragedy.

Airman Javier Garcia, a 22-year veteran, was driving his mother young daughter from Riverside to Mexicali Wednesday night to catch a flight. Then, in an instant, a car cut in front of them at Highway 86 in Brawley.

"All I remember was a car cutting across," Garcia told NBC 7 exclusively, "then them [first responders] taking me out with the jaws of life."

Javier's mother, Maria, was also in the car and did not survive.

“ I heard him [first responder] say she doesn't have a heartbeat,” Garcia said. “I think I passed out from that moment.”

Maria Garcia Zuniga had just beaten cancer, the same illness that took the life of her husband in 1995. The family was going to celebrate her cancer feat in Mazatlan for Christmas.

“That was her wish to go back home to see her family,” Garcia said.

The 22-year Airman and his daughter Delilah were rushed to San Diego area hospitals. They both suffered bleeding of the brain. It’s physical pain only topped by the emotional pain of a mother and grandmother gone too soon.

If you would like to help the Garcia family, here is a link to their official Go Fund Me page.

Analysis: China is Both Threat, Opportunity for Trump

While the U.S. remains the world's dominant military and economic power, China now is the world's second-biggest economy and has the largest military. And Beijing is beginning to flex its muscles.

After hundreds of years of looking inward, China is ascerting itself regionally, building aircraft carriers, asserting its dominance over most of the disputed South China Sea and sending troops abroad.

President Xi Jinping, China's most powerful leader in decades, is sending Washington a strong message, which is that China has changed and old assumptions about global power and American dominance don't hold anymore.

As a result of an assertive Beijing, President-Elect Donald Trump will have to decide whether to continue irritating Beijing by sailing aircraft carriers in waters China claims. Beijing's willingness or unwillingness to restrain North Korea's nuclear ambitions may provoke some sort of reaction from Washington.

Trump has not wasted time in rattling Beijing's cage — that may hint at things to come.

President Barack Obama expressed confidence that his progressive vision for the country still has broad appeal despite the stunning defeat of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in the general election this November in a candid sit-down for his former adviser David Axelrod's podcast "The Axe Files."

Although he complimented Clinton, saying she "performed wonderfully under really tough circumstances," he also suggested that had he been able to campaign for a third term he believes he would have "mobilized a majority of the American people" to rally behind the Democratic party.

"I know that in conversations that I've had with people around the country, even some people who disagreed with me, they would say the vision, the direction that you point towards is the right one," Obama told Axelrod in an interview published on Monday.

New Overtime Law in Limbo, But Still Helping Thousands

$

A law that would have made millions of workers eligible for overtime was blocked by a federal judge in November, but the law still may have resulted in higher wages for the workers it was intended to help, NBC News reported.

The law would have required companies to pay overtime to salaried/exempt workers who work more than 40 hours per week but made under $47,476 per year. Under current law, employers do not have to pay overtime to salaried/exempt workers if they make more than $23,661.

A federal judge issued a preliminary injuntion, saying the Department of Labor's rule exceeds the authority the agency was delegated by Congress, in late November, just one week before it was supposed to take effect on Dec. 1.

But according to a study by compensation information and research company PayScale, many employers gave employees raises, boosting them about the $47,476 threshhold, or reclassified employees as hourly working, making them eligible for overtime.

Christmas Morning Mudslide Displaces 4 Oceanside Families

A Christmas morning mudslide in Oceanside has displaced four families, the City of Oceanside Fire Department confirms.

The mudslide started around 5 a.m. in the 500 block of Canyon Drive. Water was reported to be coming in through a rear wall of a downstairs unit in a four unit apartment complex. The two bottom units have mud and water damage and the two top units were evacuated because of structural issues caused by the damage.

A water leak in a residential irrigation line reportedly caused the damage and the water to that residence has been turned off and the family has been evacuated temporarily.

An official from the City’s Building Department responded to the scene and red tagged the apartment complex after deeming it unsafe. The residence above the complex on Maxon Street was also tagged for limited occupancy until a geologist can evaluate the slope.

The Red Cross is assisting the displaced families with temporary accommodations. It is expected the families will be displaced for an extended period of time.

Representatives from the City’s Water Utilities Department evaluated all of the City’s water lines in the immediate area for any leaks or damage and found none.

One person was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after a bike and car collided near SeaWorld San Diego, San Diego Police (SDPD) said.

The collision happened at approximately 7:55 p.m. Sunday when police responded to the crash on SeaWorld Drive and Friars Road, near SeaWorld San Diego, police said.

The crash happened when a driver in a white Corolla was heading west on SeaWorld Drive, approaching the intersection between SeaWorld Drive and Friars, said SDPD Sargeant Johnson.

A woman riding a bicycle on the wrong side of the road in a dedicated bicycle lane on Friars failed to stop at a red traffic signal and drove through the intersection when the car struck her, Johnson said. He does not think the driver saw her, he said.

The car was driving 45 miles per hour in a 50 miles per hour zone on SeaWorld Drive, police said.

Medics got to the scene of the crash shortly after it happened and resuscitated the bicyclist three times. She sustained blunt cardiac trauma, police said. She was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries and is in surgery. The bicyclist did not have identification on her and is listed as Jane Doe.

There were no signs the driver was intoxicated, Johnson said. At this time, the driver is not facing charges and police are calling the crash an accident, Johnson said.

Part of Friars and SeaWorld Drive was shut down as authorities investigate the crash, police confirmed. Friars Road was shut down at Napa and SeaWorld Drive was down near Friars.

No further details were immediately available.

Quinceañera Invitation Goes Viral With Over a Million RSVPs

When a family's invitation to a girl's fifteenth birthday party become a viral sensation with memes galore, over 1.3 million people RSVP'd saying they would like to attend.

Police will reportedly be deployed to the family's village in Mexico to provide extra security, after a Facebook event showed over 1.3 million people planning to attend and about 366,000 people interested in the epic Quinceañera.

Some airlines even offered discounted fare rates to La Joya, San Luis Potosoi, where the event was planned. The Facebook event includes a link to a blog that asks attendees to pick a dance escort for Rubi, including Ricky Martin and Justin Beiber as possible choices.

In a video that drew over two million views, the proud father Crescencio Ibarra stands next to his daughter Rubi, donning a tiarra and a gown, and his wife Anaelda Garcia.

"Hello, how are you? We invite you this 26 of December to the 15th birthday party of our daughter, Rubi Ibarra Garcia," Mr. Ibarra says in the video, while his daughter smiles.

He goes on to list three bands that will play and announces the winner of a horse race can win 10,000 peso, which is worth approximately $490.

At the end of the video, Ibarra says that everyone is cordially invited. The original idea was to hold the party for friends and neighbors only, but he has since confirmed he would not turn anyone away.

According to Telemundo, the video has inspired countless memes and parodies including one from famous actors such as Gale García Bernal, best known for his depiction of Rodrigo in the Mozart in the Jungle television series.

One meme shows the Mexican drug lord El Chapo escaping custody to attend the fiesta, according to Telemundo. Another meme shows the fiesta making Queen and Metallica concerts pale in comparison.

A girl's 15th birthday, her Quinceañera, is a big event in Mexico, seen as the time that she comes of age. They are often accompanied with lavish parties and live bands, while girls traditionally don puffy dresses, tiaras and makeup as they are 'queen for the day.'

It's unclear why this particular video became a viral sensation, shared over 800,000 times with endless imitations.
