Psychologist: I Never Evaluated Omar Mateen

The global security firm that employed Orlando shooter Omar Mateen is facing additional scrutiny over whether it adequately screened his fitness to be a gun-carrying licensed security guard, this time from a psychologist who says she never administered a key mental health evaluation of him when he was hired in 2007.

Dr. Carol Nudelman's name appears on the document G4S Secure Solutions USA submitted to the state of Florida, which cleared the Orlando shooter to carry a firearm as a private security guard. Mateen shot and killed 49 people last Sunday in the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

Nudelman said in a statement to NBC News she never administered the test to Mateen and was not even practicing in Florida at the time when G4S ordered the evaluation.

The company called the discrepancy a "clerical error" and said that Mateen, who was a G4S employee for 9 years, had been evaluated by a different psychologist.

Abandoned Bicycles in Pacific Beach

If you've been to Pacific Beach, you have probably seen people riding bicycles all over the neighborhood.

But have you ever noticed there are many bicycles that are permanently parked?

NBC 7 learned recently that it’s an eyesore in the area and now police are running surveillance.

While pedals are pumping in Pacific Beach, others are in long-term parking with grass growing in-between the spokes.

Residents Kyle Martin and Azia Moreno think back to the time two bikes popped up outside their place on Reed Avenue.

“Yeah, it’s been about four of five months. Every time I drive by, I see them and think ‘Oh that’s cute’. I’ve never seen them actually move,” said the couple.

One bike is now missing a seat and the other bike is rusting with a flat tire. Both are chained up and leaning against a City “Street Sweeping” sign.

"Well what happened? Did this person just forget they had their bike there or get abducted or something? It boggles the mind. Why would you leave your bike?” asked Adrian Grayson, who has seen abandoned bikes locked to palm trees and a “Stop” sign at Grand Avenue & Everts.

Andrew Triplett, a neighbor, says that a bike was finally cut off Thursday.

“Every time I came to the ‘Stop’ sign over here, I saw that bike, for two weeks. You see them all over the place tied to stuff. I found my bike right here, the one I ride today. It was in perfect condition, laying in front of the house,” Triplett said.

Police told NBC 7 there are two main reasons for the abandoned bikes.

  1. Some people buy cheap bikes, have too much to drink and forget where they chained it.
  2. Nicer bikes are stolen then tied up quickly in another spot. The thief waits for the heat to be off him or her before picking it back up and selling the bike.

As for Kyle and Azia, they have mixed emotions about the two abandoned bikes outside their place finding a new home.

“I’ll be kind of sad honestly. I’ve gotten used to them, like a part of the family,” the couple joked.

To get rid of an abandoned bike in your neighborhood it must meet certain qualifications: it has to be tied to a city sign, missing a part, or seen in one spot for a few weeks.

You can download the City of San Diego's new app "Get it Done" to send in a picture of an abandoned bike.

Police in Belgium charged three people with terror-related crimes Saturday after police raided dozens of homes in Brussels overnight, according to prosecutors, NBC News reported.

The three were charged as “perpetrator or co-perpetrator, for having attempted to commit a terrorist murder and for participation in the activities of a terrorist group," the Belgium Federal Prosecutor's Office said in a statement.

Twelve people were initially suspected of planning new terror attacks — nine were later let go. A total of 40 were taken in for questioning and 152 car ports were searched, the statement said.

The country is still under a “level three” terror alert — the second highest — following the March 22 attacks on the Brussels airport and subway that killed 32 people.

Police continue to search for a man suspected of sexually assaulting a woman at knifepoint in North Park last week.

The incident happened on Friday, June 10 around 10 p.m. on the 2900 block of El Cajon Blvd. near Kansas Street.

NBC 7 learned that the victim’s phone, which began ringing during the incident, might have helped her escape.

Police released a composite sketch of the suspect on Thursday and are now offering a $1000 award for any information leading to his arrest.

Brian Ahearn, Capt. of Investigations with the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) identified the victim as a 23-year old woman who worked in the area.

Last Friday, she had been waiting for her ride at a bus stop on El Cajon Boulevard after work.

That’s when the suspect pulled up in a white Ford extended pickup cab truck and engaged the woman in small talk. He then asked her if she wanted to join him for smoke in an alley nearby.

“She described him as, you know, really being dressed and acting as if he fit in that community,” Ahearn said.

After walking into the alley, the woman told the suspect she wanted to go back but he took out a knife and began threatening her.

Ahearn says the woman began hitting his arm that was holding the knife and pleading with him to not hurt her. That’s when the man pushed her against a wall and groped her.

The woman fell down, dropping her backpack and phone on the ground which began to ring.

“The suspect went for the victim’s phone on the ground, which gave the victim enough time to grab her backpack and start to run out of the alley and back toward El Cajon Boulevard,” Ahearn said.

The suspect took off eastbound on El Cajon Boulevard in his truck after she escaped.

Ahearn says witnesses who had heard the woman screaming for help came to her aid.

“The victim felt comfortable enough in the days immediately after the crime to actually provide investigators with a composite of her recollection of what the suspect looked like,” he said.

He says SDPD is not investigating any other incidents that are related to this one and it appears to be isolated.

The suspect is described to be clean cut, between 30 to 35 years old, with a muscular build, wearing a black T-shirt with “Limited Edition” written in white letters on the front, baggy black shorts and a black baseball hat.

His truck had a rear paper plate with a hole punched in the middle.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-580-8477 or SDPD Sex Crimes Unit at (619)531-2210.

A national gun club for gays and lesbians wants the community to take up arms in self defense following the deadly massacre at an Orlando gay club in which 49 people were killed, NBC News reports.

The Pink Pistols spokesperson Gwendolyn Patton, said the group’s membership went from about 1,500 members to about 4,500 in the week after the attack. New chapters are also popping up across the country.

"We've had the greatest response in three areas, our Facebook page, which has tripled in size, our chapters, we have so many requests for information on starting new chapters I've lost count, and the sheer number of people offering services such as training to our members," Patton said.

The group was founded in 2000 and urged LGBT people to exercise their Second Amendment rights. It describes itself as "an international LGBT self-defense organization" that advocates for gay people to obtain concealed carry permits.

Operation Engage America held a resource fair at Liberty Station Saturday, in an effort to help veterans with PTSD, suicide prevention and other mental health issues.

After Coronado couple Howard and Jean Somers lost their son Daniel to suicide in 2013, they started the nonprofit – now in its third year.

Daniel Somers was an Army National Guardsman who returned home from Iraq with PTSD, traumatic brain injury and Gulf War Syndrome.

Following his death, his parents made it their mission to make sure no other veteran suffered the way their son did.

Military veterans are at a much higher risk of suicide than the general population according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Around one veteran a day commits suicide according to a study published in the February 2015 Annals of Epidemiology, which looked at 1.3 million veterans discharged between 2001 and 2007.

It is estimated that anywhere from 11 to 20 percent of veterans deal with some form of PTSD.

Jean Somers explained that many veterans think the VA is the only place they can go for help.

“But if you don't do well at the VA or can't get into the VA, there are all these other nonprofits, and county or state organizations to help pick up the slack,” she told NBC 7.

The fair is now held in various cities across the country.

Boat Fire Prompts Long-Term Closure of Glorietta Bay, Dock

Thick, heavy black plumes of smoke could be seen for miles from a Coronado boat fire early Saturday morning.

In NBC 7 San Diego viewer video, flames could be seen climbing higher as flames tore through a single boat on the 1700 block of Strand Way.

Coronado Fire officials, Coronado Police officers, San Diego Fire officials and Harbor Police responded to the fire early Saturday morning around 7 a.m., said Coronado Fire Chief Bill Modeem.

"It’s a stubborn fire to put out. You have fuel from the boat spilling on the water. At one point the tank ruptured and it had a heavy flair up of the fire," he said. "It’s difficult to put out when the boat’s moving around on the water."

Officials have closed the dock and Glorietta Bay, which was damaged by the fire, due to an 80 gallon fuel spill. Coronado officials hope to have it open by the 4th of July for the fireworks. Boats will not be allowed to dock there.

The Department of Environmental Health issued a water contact closure for the launch and 150 yards of beach to the south.

The signs will be in place until the area is safe.

The Coronado Fire Chief said nobody was on board at the time and no injuries were reported.

The circumstances that led up to the fire are under investigation.

Heatwave, Winds Fuel SoCal Wildfire

$

A massive wildfire, fueled by strong winds, rising temperatures and an extended drought, has charred 7,648 acres in Santa Barbara County as firefighters brace for an extreme heatwave threatening to roast the Southwest.

The blaze, dubbed the Sherpa Fire, was 45 percent contained as of 11:30 a.m. Saturday, county officials said.

The weekend forecast suggests firefighters face a tough battle with the warmest weather so far this year. Temperatures in the triple-digits are likely across much of Southern California.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District declared a local emergency and issued a smoke advisory for Los Angeles and Orange counties in effect through Saturday in response to the fire, over fears that winds could push smoke from the blaze across the area.

About 270 structures remained threatened and at least 300 people were evacuated. One building has already been damaged, and two firefighters suffered minor injuries, fire officials said.

The Sherpa Fire, which is feeding off of brush and tall grass chaparral, began at the top of Refugio Road Wednesday afternoon, 25 miles north of Santa Barbara, near Refugio State Beach and Reagan Ranch.

A nearby ExxonMobil processing facility evacuated some employees Thursday, and those that remained, helped protect the plant against the flames, company spokesman Todd Spitler told The Associated Press. Capt. Dave Zaniboni said the crude refinery has a cleared buffer zone.

Mandatory evacuations were ordered for the areas of Refugio Canyon, Canada del Venadito Canyon, Las Flores Canyon, El Capitan Canyon, El Capitan Ranch, El Capitan State Beach and Canada de la Destiladera. Evacuation warnings are in effect for Las Llagas Canyon, Gato Canyon, Las Varas Canyon, Dos Pueblos Canyon and Eagle Canyon. An evacuation center has been set up at the Wake Center, 300 N. Turnpike Road in Goleta and for large animals at the Earl Warren Showgrounds.

County officials said crews will continue to work on reinforcing containment lines along the 101 Freeway, which may be closed again if the fire is determined to be a hazard to motorists. Calle Real from El Cap to Refugio Road remained closed.

More than 1,200 firefighters from the U.S. Forest Service, Cal-Fire and Santa Barbara County Fire continue to battle the blaze.

Residents can monitor the status of the fire and any guidance on the County of Santa Barbara website at www.countyofsb.org or sign up for alerts at www.awareandprepare.org.

Anyone in the evacuation area needing assistance with animals, including livestock, should call (805) 681-4332.

Possible Record-Setting Excessive Heat This Weekend

San Diegans are heading into one of the hottest weekends of the year so far, as high pressure continues to build and temperatures soar, starting Saturday.

“We’ll see temperatures 15 to 20 degrees above normal which will likely mean a few new records," NBC 7 Meteorologist Greg Bledsoe said.

The National Weather Service (NWS) says an excessive heat watch will be in effect for parts of San Diego County, including valleys, mountains and deserts, from Sunday morning through next Thursday evening.

Communities that will feel the heat the most include: El Cajon; Santee; La Mesa; Poway; Pine Valley; Julian; Escondido; San Marcos; Lake Arrowhead; Big Bear.

According to the NWS, the heat wave will bring temperatures between 92 to 97 degrees in the mountains, 95 to 105 degrees in local valleys and 105 to 111 degrees in the high desert.

Meterologist Greg Bledsoe forecasts that the heat will begin Saturday, ahead of the heat wave. Beaches will be 10 to 15 degrees higher than normal on Saturday - and they'll be even hotter on Sunday and Monday.

"This will likely be the hottest weekend of the year so far," Bledsoe said.

Saturday, residents will likely see temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s along the coast, Bledsoe forecasted. Valleys will see low 90s, mountains in the breezy upper 80s and deserts will be a scorching 106, Bledsoe forecasted.

Across San Diego, expect a sunny Saturday.

By Tuesday, San Diegans may see some relief.

"The area of high pressure over the southeast will begin to break down Tuesday, but even then, we’ll stay warmer than normal all week," Bledsoe said.

The warm weather could cause heat-related illness, especially in those partaking in strenuous outdoor activity. If you plan on spending time outside, reschedule activities to early morning or evening and wear loose fitting clothing. Also, drink plenty of water.
