Trump Kicks Off California Campaign in Costa Mesa

Donald Trump is courting Golden State voters who could put him over the top in GOP convention delegates.

The presidential candidate kicked off his California campaign with a rally in Costa Mesa Thursday night before he addresses the state's Republican convention on Friday, his campaign announced.

"It just gives us an opportunity to get into the state and say here we are," said Trump's California campaign manager Tim Clark. "We can draw volunteers as far south as San Diego and as far north as Los Angeles."

Clark said tickets have been going fast since the event in Orange County was announced Wednesday but he did not have an estimate of how many would be available.

Fresh off a sweep of five Northeastern primaries, Trump hopes to lock up the nomination with California's June 7 primary.

The rare importance of the state's vote, which has the last primary in the country, is signified this year by the attendance of all three candidates at the weekend convention in Burlingame, in the San Francisco Bay Area. Joining them is Texas Sen. Ted Cruz's newly announced running mate, Carly Fiorina, a former U.S. Senate candidate in California.

Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer of California, who fended off a challenge from Fiorina in 2010, held a call with reporters Wednesday in which she said that all three Republican contenders are out of step with California voters.

She also jabbed Trump's comment a day earlier that Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton is "playing the woman card," noting that no woman has yet come close to being the president.

"Anyone with a heartbeat and a pulse knows how hard it is for a woman to get to the top," she said. "We still don't even make a dollar for every dollar a man makes; it's 79 cents. I am speechless at what I saw."

Trump's Costa Mesa rally is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at the Orange County Fairgrounds.

Charges in Pa. Church Shooting

A Montgomery County man who opened fire on another worshipper in a packed church during Sunday service has been charged with manslaughter.

Mark T. Storms, 46, of Lansdale, Pennsylvania, was charged Thursday with voluntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment in the death of 27-year-old Robert E. Braxton III.

Storms shot Braxton inside Keystone Fellowship Church, a non-denominational church on Stump Road in North Wales, on Sunday morning, prosecutors said. The shooting happened in the church's sanctuary, which was filled with hundreds of worshippers for an 11 a.m. service. Witnesses told NBC10 churchgoers hid under pews as the altercation played out.

Witnesses remember Braxton arriving at church irritated and cursing at an usher in the back of the church, court documents show. Church staff members tried to quiet Braxton, but he refused before heading to a pew that was reserved for two other church members, according to prosecutors.

A church member sitting behind Braxton tapped him on the shoulder to let him know the seats were reserved. Another couple put down two Bibles to save their spots before walking away. Braxton retorted the tap and starting yelling "Don't f------ touch me!" an affidavit reads.

An assistant pastor and ushers came over to try and calm Braxton, but he continued to yell, records show.

In interviews with police, witnesses watched Storms walk over to Braxton, show him a badge and motion to a handgun under his shirt. The badge, police said, was for his concealed carry permit. Braxton exchanged words with Storms before punching him in the jaw. Storms then pulled out his gun and fired two shots, according to witnesses.

What church members remember between Storms showing the badge and the shooting varied.

A female witness told police Braxton said "F--- you and your fake badge, get the f--- out of here" to Storms when he showed off the gold marker.

Another church member, a man, told investigators Storms brandished his gun, to which, Braxton replied, "That's not a real gun."

One person said Braxton lunged at Storms before the shooting. Another recalled hearing Braxton ask Storms "What are you going to do, shoot me?" before punching him, court documents show.

Storms, in an interview with police, said he opened fire on Braxton because he felt his "person was in great danger" and that he was worried other people in the church, including the elderly and children, were going to be hurt.

Storms told police he showed off the concealed carry badge with hopes of defusing the situation. He said, according to court documents, he had done that in the past and that man "walked away."

Following the shooting, Braxton was taken to Abington-Lansdale Hospital where he died. An autopsy showed a bullet hit him in the right side of his chest and right arm.

Kevin Steele, Montgomery County district attorney, said his office decided to file charges after an intensive investigation and interviews with 50 witnesses.

Storms will be arraigned Thursday afternoon. It's not clear if he has retained an attorney.

ArtWalk to Line Little Italy

San Diego’s Little Italy community is always colorful but this weekend that energy will be amplified as a two-day, art-centric block party lines the streets.

The 32nd Annual Mission Federal ArtWalk will go down Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., highlighting both visual and performing arts in San Diego.

This year, the event will fill 17 blocks along India Street – from Fir to Beech streets – with more than 350 local, national and international artists selling their works across every medium, from paintings and sculptures to glass works, fine jewelry and photography.

The free, family-friendly fest will also feature live music and dance performances, as well as street food vendors, interactive activities and a “KidsWalk” area with a wide range of creative projects to keep the little ones busy.

Organizers say the event typically draws 100,000 art enthusiasts of all ages. It is recognized as one of San Diego’s premier arts and cultural event and the largest fine art festival in Southern California.

Due to the large crowd, organizers suggest attendees use public transit like the MTS trolley to get to the ArtWalk. The trolley’s Green Line stops at the County Center/Little Italy stop, which is at the western edge of the event area between Cedar and Beech streets. From there, it’s a short walk east on Beech Street to the block party.

There will also be a free Old Town Trolley shuttle taking passengers to and from the ArtWalk from two parking lots near the event: the Airport’s new Economy Lot, which can be accessed from Pacific Highway and Washington Street or Pacific Highway and Sassafras Street, or the Aladdin Garage located at Kettner Boulevard and Laurel Street.

If you opt to drive, there’s also a large Ace Parking garage located at the corner of Cedar Street and Kettner Boulevard. An ArtWalk map can be seen here.

NBC 7 SportsWrap Predicts The Chargers 1st Pick

$

Members of our NBC7 sports department share their predictions for who they think the Chargers will draft with the 3rd overall pick.

We also tackled the possibility of the Chargers trading down from the 3rd spot.

So who do you think the Chargers will choose in the 1st round?

Sports Anchor Jim Laslavic: Jalen Ramsey because he is the best athlete available. Having lost Eric Weddle, the Chargers can pair a good talent like Ramsey with Jason Verrett.

They've already invested money into the five starting positions on the O-Line and they just need everyone to be healthy. The Chargers can add offensive and defensive linemen in the 2nd and 3rd rounds because there are lots of depth in this year's draft at those positions.

Sports Anchor MJ Acosta: Laremy Tunsil. Because protecting Rivers needs to be the top priority.

If it winds up being a later pick, expect them to take Ohio State DE Joey Bosa. Why? Two words: Pass Rush.

Sports anchor/reporter Derek Togerson: DeForest Buckner. The bottom line is the Bolts are desperate for defensive line help. A line of Buckner, Corey Liuget and Brandon Mebane suddenly makes the San Diego front look formidable.

If they trade, it will be with Jacksonville who will take Tunsil. The Bolts would move back to 5 and after the Cowboys take Ezekiel Elliott, and selec Buckner there.

Sports anchor/reporter Todd Strain: Jalen Ramsey. He’s a solid pro and should play for 10 years. Other players projected in the Top 10 have more “All-Pro” or “All-Bust” potential.

If the Chargers trade back to the middle of the first round, look for them to go offensive line because many of the impact defensive players might be gone by then and they can go D-Line with 2nd and 3rd round picks. Keep an eye on Michigan State offensive lineman Jack Conklin.

Sports producer Ben Rosehart: DeForest Buckner. The 4.8 yards they allowed per carry last year remains the elephant in the room that needs to go away.

If they trade down they might still be able to grab Buckner or perhaps another defensive lineman. Alabama center Ryan Kelly is probably underrated but don’t think he’s that high on their draft board.

Sports producer Becki Schildhouse: If they keep it I think they go with Ole Miss OT Laremy Tunsil. He takes care of two big issues – protects Philip Rivers and makes holes for Melvin Gordon. They were the worst pass-blocking team last year.

If they trade the pick, I can see Baltimore making a deal to move up from 6 and the Chargers are going to go with Joey Bosa.

San Diego Police are looking for a man who stabbed another man at a restaurant in Kearny Mesa Wednesday night.

A fight broke out inside Min Sok Chon restaurant on Convoy Street near Dagget Street, east of Interstate 805 and west of State Route 163.

Medics packed the victim into the back of an ambulance just before midnight.

The victim was stabbed in his arm and upper back but is expected to survive his injuries, police said.

News of the stabbing has nearby business owners worried.

Kristen Le owns Cafe Bene in the same strip mall as the restaurant. She closed up shop before the incident happened.

Le said Min Sok Chon is a popular restaurant and karaoke bar with great employees and service but sometimes there are a few drunk people there at night.

Officers taped off the parking lot and interviewed witnesses.

They say the suspect was a man in his 20s wearing a white shirt. They described him as 5-foot, 8-inches tall and weighs about 200 pounds.

East Village Drug Bust Nets 31 Arrests

Thirty-one suspects have been charged in connection to a massive drug bust dubbed “Operation Hard Candy” targeting downtown San Diego’s East Village neighborhood.

The bust involves methamphetamine, cocaine base and heroin, sold to undercover officers, officials said.

The bust was a result of a month-long undercover operation targeting street-level drug dealers. It began in October 2015 as a response to complaints from residents and businesses in East Village, according to a news release from the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office.

After a week-long grand jury hearing, 22 indictments were issued against 31 defendants. So far, 26 of the 31 suspects have been arrested.

Already, 20 defendants have pleaded guilty and face sentencing on various drug charges in May.

Most of the residents and business folks that spoke to NBC7 Thursday along Market near 11th Avenue were simply shocked at the level of hard drugs in the area. Also, many said they had not noticed the undercover police presence.

"I'm very thankful that the San Diego police are making a real effort and making moves like that to help try to clean-up drugs in society in general," said Hollice Cameron, who works in the area. "I think it's really important."

Deputy District Attorney Hung Bach said the investigation was brought forward by SDPD to address resident complaints about blatant drug sales and open use of drugs on the streets, mostly around Commercial and Fourth and Fifth streets.

"They wanted to address the public's concerns and tackle this issue head-on," Bach said.

District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis said the operation has made the neighborhood safer.

"The presence of prevalent drug-dealing in a neighborhood invariably leads to an increase of other various crimes like robberies and theft," Dumanis said. It's a sentiment shared by many residents who spoke to NBC7 Thursday.

"I called about it," said Janely Perez, referring to drug activity in the East Village neighborhood where she works. "I came from a place where that's all I would see is drugs and criminals and people getting killed, shot, stabbed and I move here and start to see anything like that and think 'there's some changes we need to make.'"

Police are still looking to serve arrest warrants to five suspects.

Detectives are searching for a young suspect accused of stabbing a man to death on the streets of National City three weeks ago.

The National City Police Department (NCPD) said Thursday that detectives have identified Enrique Cruz Pompa, 19, in the slaying of Eduardo Ortega, 25.

On April 9, Ortega was stabbed several times in the 200 block of North Highland Avenue. He was found unresponsive on the east sidewalk and died from his wounds a short time later, the NCPD said.

Witnesses told police the victim was involved in some type of altercation with an unknown man before being stabbed.

Now, detectives believe that man was Pompa – a documented gang member who is considered armed and dangerous.

Police said Pompa has a no bail, felony arrest warrant for homicide. The wanted fugitive is described by police as a Hispanic man who stands at 5-foot-8 and weighs approximately 180 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information on Pompa’s whereabouts should call NCPD Detective V. Fernando at (619) 587-2140 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. Tipsters can remain anonymous.

About 15 percent of students at San Diego State University (SDSU) say they have experienced some type of sexual violence on campus, according to survey results released Thursday afternoon.

The Campus Sexual Violence Survey was sent out to all 30,000 students at SDSU and more than 9,000 students participated.

Students were asked questions about their attitudes and beliefs towards sexual violence, bystander intervention and the prevalence of sexual violence on campus.

“15 percent of our students reported experiencing some type of sexual violence. That can include anything from unwanted kissing, rubbing, touching to something like rape,” said Jessica Rentto, SDSU’s Associate Vice President of Administration.

Rentto says the number is less than the national average but it’s still high. Sexual violence is an issue at all college campuses.

“Next steps for the University is taking that data, really looking at it to determine what are the different factors that are playing into the attitudes and beliefs and as well as the incidents of sexual violence and better targeting our educational efforts to end the violence,” she said.

Results were released during a community-wide awareness event at the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union. The event coincides with Take Back the Week, an annual event organized by student group Aztecs for Awareness.

Students will also march on campus in solidarity and remembrance for victims of sexual violence Thursday evening.

3 Arrested in San Bernardino Probe

The brother of one of the San Bernardino terror attack shooters was among three people arrested Thursday morning after warrants were served in a Southern California marriage fraud investigation.

All three of the individuals arrested Thursday in Ontario and Corona have family connections to gunman Syed Rizwan Farook, who died along with his wife in a shootout with police after the Dec. 2 mass shooting. The shooters killed 14 people at a holiday party earlier that day in San Bernardino.

The warrants were served Wednesday in connection with a five-count indictment that charges the three with making false statements to obtain immigration benefits for one of the defendants.

The marriage fraud case stemmed from the terror attack investigation and led to the arrests of Mariya Chernykh, 26, of Ontario; her sister, 31-year-old Tatiana Farook, of Corona; and Syed Raheel Farook, the 31-year-old husband of Tatiana Farook and brother to Syed Rizwan Farook. It was not immediately known if the three have hired attorneys.

Arraignment was scheduled for Thursday afternoon.

Chernyhk is married to Enrique Marquez Jr., who is awaiting trial on charges of conspiring with Rizwan Farook in 2011 and 2012 to provide material support to terrorists. He has pleaded not guilty.

When he was indicted on those charges last year, Marquez also was charged with entering into a sham marriage with Chernykh in November 2014. He falsely signed an immigration form and falsely declared he was living with her so she could obtain legal residence status in the United States, according to authorities.

In one exchange of messages, Marquez and Chernykh discussed their anxiety about their upcoming immigration interview because of their lack of contact with each other, according to the most recent indictment. Marquez said he was worried about being imprisoned for fraud, the indictment says.

Tatiana Farook and Syed Raheel Farook are accused of taking staged family photos of Marquez and Chernykh, establishing a joint checking account for them and creating a back-dated lease to give the illusion that they shared a home.

Rizwan Farook, 28, and wife Tashfeen Malik, 27, opened fire Dec. 2 at a social services center in San Bernardino, killing 14 people and wounding more than 20 others. They fled the scene but died hours later in a shootout with police.

U.S. Attorney Eileen M. Decker released a statement Thursday applauding the arrests.

"This is the latest step in the comprehensive investigation into the horrific attacks in San Bernardino last year that took the lives of 14 innocent Americans and deeply affected so many more," said U.S. Attorney Eileen M. Decker. "As I have said previously, we owe the victims, and the entire community of San Bernardino, a thorough investigation that uncovers all criminal activity surrounding these events.

"Today's arrests open a new phase in the process of bringing to justice all individuals who allegedly committed crimes that were uncovered during our exhaustive investigation. The charges also reflect the importance we place on statements made to law enforcement officials during a terrorism investigation. Those who lie to or conceal material information from law enforcement officers investigating terrorist acts will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

The FBI conducted another search in February at a Corona home connected to Raheel Farook. Authorities did not confirm the property searched Thursday was the same location searched in February.

Late last month, federal authorities said they successfully used a mysterious technique without Apple Inc.'s help to hack into the iPhone used by a gunman in a mass shooting in California, effectively ending a pitched court battle between the Obama administration and one of the world's leading technology companies.

Police have found the red car involved in an earlier police pursuit that lead officers across multiple San Diego freeways, but the suspect is still at-large.

The pursuit began at approximately 5 p.m. Thursday near Caminito East Bluff and Via Sonoma when officers were conducting a "check the welfare" call, San Diego Police (SDPD) officers said.

According to police, the suspect was intially thought to be a parolee at large, but they are not clear anyone whether he is a parolee.

The driver of the red car refused to pull over and was weaving in and out of rush-hour traffic, driving at high speeds.

The pursuit went from La Jolla up to several North County freeways before the driver turned around and headed to Downtown San Diego, where the driver pulled into a parking garage at 9th Street and F Street Downtown. Police found the car, but not the suspect.

Police began searching the area on foot for the suspect.

Man Falsely Accused of Terrorism Wants Accusers Charged

A Sikh man who said he was racially profiled wants law enforcement agencies to file criminal charges against the people who allegedly falsely accused him of a terrorist bomb threat, NBC News reported.

Daljeet Singh, who wears a turban and beard as articles of his faith, was traveling on a Greyhound bus through Amarillo, Texas, on Feb. 21, 2016, according to The Sikh Coalition, which is representing him. He was speaking to another man in Punjabi, when a woman on the bus reported to police that the two men were “acting weird,” speaking Arabic and discussing a bomb.

Two other passengers detained the two men in their seats until police came and arrested them at gunpoint. Police removed Singh’s turban and detained him for more than 30 hours. He was interviewed by the FBI through an interpreter. Both men were cleared of any wrongdoing.

"Whether it's a Sikh man on a Greyhound bus, or an Arabic speaker on a Southwest airplane, the xenophobic fear and bigotry in our country is out of control," Gurjot Kaur, senior staff attorney at The Sikh Coalition, told NBC News.

San Diego Surfer Attacked by Shark in Bali

A San Diego man is slowly recovering overseas after being attacked by a shark while surfing in Bali last week, his family confirms.

Ryan Boarman – an avid traveler, surfer and graduate of Monte Vista High School and California State University Long Beach (CSULB) – was surfing with friends in the waters off Bali around 7 a.m. on April 24 when, suddenly, he felt extreme pain shooting through his arm.

According to his family, Boarman was attacked by a shark, the creature biting through his right arm near his elbow, tearing through muscle all the way to the bone.

Despite tremendous blood loss from the bite, Boarman managed to ride a wave onto shore where he then collapsed. His friends and bystanders pulled him from the water and he was rushed to a local hospital.

Boarman’s family said the surfer underwent hours of emergency surgery and doctors were able to save his arm. Now, his family is trying to get Boarman to Singapore so he can get more advanced medical care.

Loved ones have launched a GoFundMe page to cover the costs and, as of 11 a.m. Thursday, had raised more than $17,300. The page says all funds will be used to get Boarman to Singapore and for medical expenses not covered by insurance.

Any unused funds will be donated to ocean conservation charities – a cause Boarman is passionate about.

NBC 7 spoke with Boarman’s brother-in-law, Kevin Cradic, who said the family is anxious to get him to Singapore. At this point, Boarman is not well enough to travel back to San Diego, which is why they’re seeking treatment for him in Singapore.

They hope to transfer him there by 3 p.m. Thursday. Cradic said Boarman’s father is on his way overseas to reunite with his son within the next few hours.

Cradic said Boarman is in stable condition but still in a lot of pain. Further treatment will give the family a better idea of whether or not Boarman will regain full use of his arm.

Cradic said Boarman was surfing in a river mouth in semi-murky water at the time of the shark attack. He saw the six-foot shark for a brief moment after it bit him, as it swam away from him.

When he got to the shore, Cradic said Boarman told friends “it was a good ride,” right before he passed out.

“He lives for the ocean,”Cradic told NBC 7. “He’s a very strong swimmer. I speculate that his strength with swimming is what made him get on that board and get back to shore, and saved his life with how much blood he lost.”

According to loved ones, Boarman has been surfing since childhood – a hobby he grew to love while growing up in Riverside, California. When the family moved to San Diego, Boarman began surfing every day. He has surfed all over the world, including Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Mexico, Vietnam, Portugal and Indonesia.

Cradic said he has no doubt Boarman will get back in the water to surf as soon as he has fully recovered.

Boarman has a degree in Geography with an emphasis in GIS Mapping from Cal State Long Beach and works as a field biologist on wildlife conservation projects. He’s also a certified master diver.

An Olympic high jumper who has lived and trained in San Diego County is recovering after suffering a spinal injury in a freak accident.

Two-time Olympian and four-time USA Champion Jamie Nieto has trained at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista and hosted a number of track and field clinics for aspiring athletes.

Nieto was involved in a such an activity on Saturday at Azusa Pacific University when he tried to demonstrate his signature back flip to the students, according to NBC Olympics.

Nieto's foot slipped and he landed on his head, causing paralysis from the neck down.

An MRI showed the C3 and C4 vertebrae had been compressed and the disc between them had been forced forward into the spinal cord, NBC Olympics reported.

As of Tuesday, Nieto was recovering from surgery to remove the disc and fuse the spine at C3-C4.

Feeling is slowly returning to part of his body.

"The outlook remains positive that Jamie can still make a full recovery," his manager Paul Doyle told NBC Olympics.

An online fundraising campaign is asking for donations to help with medical expenses.

"He will have months of rehab just to fight just to be able to step again and this is someone who was one of the elite athletes in the world,” said Nieto’s friend, Olympic athlete Lolo Jones.

The Rocky History Between Cruz and Boehner

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz personally told NBC News he had not met John Boehner, when he addressed comments made about him by the former House Speaker.

But the two men do have a past: Ted Cruz was once Boehner’s lawyer, when Boehner sued Washington state Democrat Jim McDermott over a leaked recording. Boehner filed the lawsuit in 1998 involving the illegal interception of an embarrassing phone call in which Boehner discussed House leadership business. He said his personal privacy was violated.

Boehner won the case — part of which was handled by Ted Cruz. Sources close to Boehner told NBC News the two met during the lawsuit, but likely never had contact after Cruz arrived on Capitol Hill in 2013.

For Boehner, Cruz led the political charge against him, when he was effectively a “player coach” in the move to oust the former speaker last year.

Through the government shutdown in 2013, Cruz helped influence House members in the dissent that made the former speaker choose to step aside in 2015.

Hundreds Walk Out of Class to Protest Coaches' Dismissal

Hundreds of students walked out of class at Herbert Hoover High School (HHHS) Thursday after learning at least two soccer coaches were dismissed.

HHHS Vice Principal Jeremy Martin said two walk-on coaches did not have their temporary contracts renewed, adding the school wants to go in a "different direction." HHHS is located in San Diego's Mid-City neighborhood.

When the students found out about the dismissals, they went to the administration, which told students the coaches were not dismissed, even though they were, one soccer coach told NBC 7 San Diego.

The students then marched outside.

From 9:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. Thursday, hundreds of students were in front of the school in what Martin called a peaceful and unfocused demonstration.

One of the coaches has been at the school for 20 years, Martin said. He was apparently dismissed for going $1,000 over budget. Martin would not go into specifics on job action taken against the coaches.

Martin estimated 90 percent of the students were using it as an opportunity to get out of class.

The administration chose to do nothing when learning of the students' actions, Martin said, so as not to incite the group. They monitored the activity and made sure it stayed safe. Eventually, the students went back to class, he said.

NBC 7 San Diego has reached out to the district for a comment. We will update this story when we learn more.

Chargers Make 1st Round Choice in NFL Draft

The San Diego Chargers have chosen Joey Bosa in the First Round of the NFL Draft.

Bosa, a defensive end from Ohio State University, joins new acquisition Brandon Mebane, a former Seahawks nose tackle who signed with the Chargers last month, in bolstering the defensive line.

The Chargers have needed a force on the defensive line since Jamal Williams left after the 2009 season.

Many people had expected the Chargers to take either a left tackle or to pick Florida State defensive back Jalen Ramsey.

Bosa's career ended on a down note when he was ejected in the first quarter in the Fiesta Bowl for targeting Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer.

Chargers General Manager Tom Telesco said in a tweet the team has had its eye on Bosa since September.

Bosa was effusive in his excitement on Twitter after he was picked No. 3 overall.

The Chargers are coming off a 4-12 season in which they went winless in the AFC West. They're also trying to get a citizens' initiative on the Nov. 8 ballot to help fund a new stadium.

Picking Bosa in the first round was not a surprise move for the Chargers. Much speculation surrounded what the Bolts would do with the fortunate No.3 pick. Would they trade to acquire more picks or keep the third slot and pick a formidable defensive player, like Bosa?

Several staffers with the NBC 7 sports department predicted the Bolts would look to either beef up their offensive line or defensive line.

Bosa has earned All-America honors twice and also garnered the Big Ten defensive player of the year award and two Big Ten defensive linemen of the year awards in three seasons.

The draft is taking place in Chicago and continues through Saturday with rounds 1-7.

Texting and driving can end with sometimes deadly consequences so one federal agency is telling people to #justdrive.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released a powerful PSA showing the dangers of texting and driving.

They’re also publicly shaming distracted drivers on Twitter.

On their stream you’ll find them responding to people who brag about texting and driving.

One person wrote "I don’t text and drive, no mms that’s dangerous. I just Instagram and drive."

"Yeahhhh about that…that’s not any safer," the NHTSA responded.

"You shouldn’t text and drive or Tweet and drive," explained NHTSA Communication Director Bryan Thomas. "And if you're bragging online, we want you to know we’re paying attention and were trying to help save lives."

More than 100 people in California were killed by distracted drivers and 11,000 were injured according to NHTSA's most recent numbers from 2014.

Among the injured, former Navy Petty Officer Kenny Freudenvoll.

His spine was broken when someone texting and looking at his cell phone plowed into the Navy veteran's truck, sending it flying from Interstate 8 at Dave and Busters.

NHTSA and its safety partners hoping to heighten awareness during this month of Distracted Driver Awareness.

Every hour Thomas says 500,000 people are on roads using their cell phone while driving.

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Currently, there is a $161 fine for those caught using their phone while driving.

The earth shook in western Pennsylvania Friday morning during a natural gas line explosion that could be felt up to 6 miles away, left a gaping hole in the ground and sent one man running for his life as the intense heat burned his body.

The 36-inch gas line blew around 8:30 a.m. Friday in Salem Township, about 30 miles east of Pittsburgh in Westmoreland County. The injured man, who was hospitalized for severe burns, lived in a home about 500 yards away.
