Clinton, Sanders Spar Over NY Debate Dates

Hillary Clinton's campaign said Saturday that Democratic rival Bernie Sanders has rejected three proposed debate dates ahead of the New York primary on April 19, NBC News reported.

In a statement, Clinton's campaign said it offered April 4, but the Sanders team wanted the debate after the Wisconsin primary on April 5. Clinton officials then offered April 14 and April 15 as potential dates and those were also rejected by the Sanders campaign.

“Both offers for the night of April 14 and the morning of April 15 still remain," Clinton spokesman Brian Fallon wrote. "The Sanders campaign needs to stop with the games."

The Sanders campaign, however, responded that they have proposed other dates the Clinton campaign has rejected.

"Unfortunately, the dates and venues [Clinton] has proposed don't make a whole lot of sense," Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs said in a statement. "The idea that they want a debate in New York on a night of the NCAA finals — with Syracuse in the tournament, no less — is ludicrous."

After a blustery night in the Midwest, forecasters said that strong winds and snow would continue to sweep across the Northeast Sunday, NBC News reported.

High wind advisories were in place from Ohio to Maine, as well as southern Illinois and most of Kentucky, forecasters said.

The weather has already knocked out power in chunks of Indiana and Pennsylvania and Ohio, where wind gusts Saturday topped 60 miles per hour.

Forecasters said much of the Northeast could see temperatures in the 20s and 30s, which is below average. Around 4 to 6 inches of snow could fall in parts of upstate New York to parts of Massachusetts near Boston, and much Connecticut could see 1 to 3 inches.

Trump Would Guarantee Win for Clinton: Cruz

Sen. Ted Cruz urged North Dakota party activists and delegates to back him over Donald Trump, warning that a Trump nomination would guarantee a win for Hillary Clinton, NBC News reported.

Cruz said that Republicans are coalescing in opposition to Trump, who still leads the GOP field nationally, despite a drop in his poll numbers.

They understand that "nominating Donald would be a trainwreck," the Texas politician said. "Nominating Donald elects Hillary Clinton."

Cruz noted the significance of North Dakota's delegates: "It is entirely possible the men and women here will decide this entire primary — will decide this nomination," he said on stage.

The state doesn't have a primary or a caucus. All 28 delegates are free agents, and can back whomever they personally support.

Funeral arrangements have been made for the Virginia State Police trooper gunned down at a busy bus terminal in Richmond.

Virginia State Police announced Saturday that the funeral for Trooper Chad P. Dermyer will take place on Tuesday, April 5 at 11 a.m. at Liberty Baptist Church at 1021 Big Bethel Road in Hampton, Va., and will be followed by a private graveside burial in Gloucester County.

The same church will also hold a visitation on Monday, April 4 from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

Dermyer, 37, was shot multiple times by an Illinois man before other officers shot and killed the gunman, police said. Police have not said what the motive was in the shooting and identified the shooter as 34-year-old James Brown III.

Dermyer, uniformed in dark blue fatigues, had been participating with about a dozen other troopers in a training exercise at the bus station.

He was known as a hard worker and good colleague, said Newport News Police Sgt. Gerald Loose. Dermyer worked for the Newport News Police Department from 2003 to 2007. Dermyer had a wife and two children, police said.

April 2nd was the first Saturday in 20 years that Alfred White wasn't coaching bowling in Mira Mesa.

White died in a freak accident Thursday when he was run over by a U-Haul truck.

For the last two decades White spent his Saturday mornings sharing his passion for bowling with kids, teaching them life lessons along the way.

His friends and members of the youth bowling program honored Coach Al Saturday, sharing their favorite stories, and releasing balloons outside Mira Mesa Lanes.

The 80-year-old died in a bizarre accident while he was working as a U-Haul attendant.

"Al's lifelong dream was to make sure people understood that their child could come here and recreate and play and hang out with their families, roll the ball with their friends and earn scholarship dollars as early as the age of two." General manager Christy Balla told NBC 7.

In honor of White, Mira Mesa Lanes is donating all raffle proceeds from the week to youth bowling, a program White strongly supported.

"Al is irreplaceable,” Balla said. “I don't know what we're going to do, but the program will remain in place. Al's philosophies and beliefs, and how we'll treat families. Nothing will change. Nothing will change."

Garza said, “It’s always an honor to be called into training camp and it’s incredible to see the growth and development of the team from my first camp with Coach Sharp in January 2013.” He added, “I’m beyond excited for the near future with our upcoming tournaments that will help us prepare for the biggest tournament in our game, the Paralympics.”

After camp a squad of players will head to the 2016 Pre-Paralympic Tournament in Setubal, Spain, April 24th-May 8th. The Paralympic games are September 7-18 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. You can watch them on NBC 7.

Poway Girl With Leukemia Inspires Bone Marrow Drive

Scott Taylor’s 12-year-old daughter Madi was diagnosed with cancer a year ago after doctors found a tumor in her hip.

After she went through 11 months of radiation and chemotherapy her family became victims of the CEO of a local cancer charity convicted of stealing from the organization.

Just when it seemed like things were getting better: "January 29th this year she was declared cancer free,12 days later they found Leukemia in her,” Taylor said. "I had to go home and tell my wife.”

Scott and his family held a bone marrow drive Saturday to help thousands of families around the country just like theirs.

“We are doing this in honor of her,” Taylor said. “Which is why so many people are here today.”

The drive, however is not for Madi. Fortunately, she already has a donor in her brother.

For 70% of patients in need of a bone marrow transplant though, there is no match in the family.

"Getting people on the registry, making people aware of it, gives hope to families who have kids with cancer, or anybody with cancer,” Taylor told NBC 7.

After a year like the Taylor family has had, hope for the future is a really good thing.

"Like I don't know how many people we've had today, but it's been a great, great day. Great day,” he added.

Five masked men, at least three of which had guns, robbed the Royal Maui Jewelry store at Fashion Valley Mall Saturday night, San Diego police (SDPD) confirmed.

The attempted robbery happened at approximately 8 p.m. at the mall on the 7000 block of Friars Road.

When the suspects entered the store, they grabbed the security guard's arm and tried to rush him, police said. The security guard fired one round at the suspect, police said, but missed.

The suspects fled, running through the mall. One man dropped a gun, which police found and seized.

When police pulled up to the area, they saw one suspect and arrested him.

As police searched for the second suspect, a part of State Route 163 was shut down, snarling evening traffic.

Both northbound and southbound traffic re-opened later. During that time, a woman went into labor while stuck on the 163; medics arrived shortly after 9 p.m. and was taken to the hospital. She did not give birth on the freeway.

A second suspect was arrested.

Police said they recovered disguises, including wigs, near the San Diego riverbed, which were believed to have been used in the robbery .

Three more suspects are still outstanding in connection with the robbery. Police did not have detailed suspect descriptions for the outstanding men.

There were no reported injuries.

No further information was immediately available.

Flyers fans experienced a scary moment after Saturday’s game at the Wells Fargo Center when an escalator suddenly malfunctioned.

Meghan McGreevy told NBC10 she attended Saturday’s game against the Ottawa Senators with her fiancé. As fans began leaving following the Flyers’ 3-2 victory, McGreevy says she suddenly saw an escalator speed up. McGreevy recorded as the escalator suddenly accelerated sending fans tumbling down.

McGreevy told NBC10 she didn’t witness any major injuries following the incident.

Ike Richman, a spokesman with Comcast Spectator confirmed with NBC10 the escalator malfunctioned and officials immediately closed it down after.

“We immediately closed it down to protect our patrons and notified the operator,” said Richman. “We are working with the operator on investigating this incident. We did not use that particular escalator during tonight's Sixers game. We expect it to be working in time for Tuesday's Sixers game, which is our next event.”

Officials wound back an initial tsunami threat issued after a large earthquake near Vanuatu in the South Pacific early Sunday morning, NBC News reported. The quake was initially measured at a magnitude of 7.2 but later revised down to 6.9.

"Based on all data available ... the tsunami threat from this earthquake has now mostly passed," the center said in a statement.

The quake struck at a depth of 21 miles at 4:23 a.m. ET, about 48 miles west southwest of Sola, Vanuatu, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Earthquakes are common in the area and even large tremors often cause no tsunamis. A magnitude 7.3 quake struck off Vanuatu in October and a 6.3 quake struck in December without causing any damage.

Hotel guests on an island about 350 miles east of Mauritius discovered debris last week that is now an "item of interest" in the search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, NBC News reported.

Australia's transport minister, Darren Chester, said the Malaysian government is working with officials from Mauritius to take custody of the debris and arrange for its examination.

William Auguste, who owns the Mourouk Ebony Hotel on Rodrigues Island where the debris was found, said "It looks like it's from the inside part of [an airplane]."

Australia has led the search for the plane, which went missing in March 2014 with 239 people on board.

Trump: Tweet About Cruz's Wife Was 'Mistake'

In a rare move, Donald Trump says he regrets retweeting an unflattering photo of Ted Cruz’s wife, NBC News reports.

"Yeah, it was a mistake," Trump told New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd in a column published Saturday. "If I had to do it again, I wouldn't have sent it."

Trump retweeted an unflattering photo of Heidi Cruz next to his own wife, Melania, after he accused Cruz of being behind or at least knowing about an ad that featured an old picture of his wife posing nude for GQ magazine. Cruz denied being involved with the ad, which was created by an anti-Trump super PAC.

Trump is coming off a bruising week in which he repeatedly backtracked from comments he made to Chris Matthews of MSNBC about abortion and whether women should face "some form of punishment" for getting one if abortions were illegal.

2 Dead as Amtrak Train Hits Backhoe

An Amtrak train struck a piece of construction equipment just south of Philadelphia Sunday morning, leaving two Amtrak employees dead and nearly three dozen passengers hurt as the lead engine derailed as the train passed through a fireball.

Around 8 a.m., passengers aboard Amtrak's Palmetto Train 89 felt a jolt as the train struck a backhoe on the tracks between Booth Street and Highland Avenue in Chester, Pennsylvania — not far from the Highland Avenue Station, officials said.

Two Amtrak employees, with more than 40 years of service between them, died and at least one person was injured, investigators told NBC10. [[374408141, C]]

The train, which was headed from New York to Savannah, Georgia, had 341 passengers and seven crew members on board at the time, Amtrak said. At least 35 passengers suffered non-life-threatening injuries, said Chester Fire Department Commissioner Travis Thomas.

Passengers told NBC10's Randy Gyllenhaal they heard a bang, felt a jolt and then saw a plume of smoke and a fireball as the train proceeded past the point of impact. The force of the wreck caused the train engine to derail, Amtrak said.

Linton Holmes, a 15-year-old from Wilson, North Carolina, was near the back of train after a visit with his mother in Sicklerville, New Jersey. "The train was like rumbling... there was dust everywhere."

After the crash, passengers were told to stay on the train until the rails could be deactivated. Holmes said passengers sat in silence as they waited to get off the train.

Holmes said some people were cut up and he saw some people bloodied.

Local emergency responders on the scene assessed passengers. Concerned family members and friends of passengers who were on board the train were advised to call 1-800-523-9101 for information.

The nearby Trainer United Methodist Church at W 9th and Langley streets served as a staging scene. Emergency crews could be seen loading people on to waiting SEPTA buses to take them away from the scene.

SEPTA suspended trains along the Wilmington/Newark Line until further notice and Amtrak suspended all Northeast Corridor trains between Philadelphia and Wilmington until at least early afternoon while keeping Keystone Service between New York and Harrisburg going. [[374407651, C]]

NJ Transit said it would accept Amtrak tickets for travelers going between New York and Trenton during the suspension. And SEPTA would honor Amtrak tickets for service on the Paoli/Thorndale Line to Trenton.

Unharmed passengers told NBC10 that Amtrak was helping them with rental cars so they could continue on their journey south. Other passengers were returned to Philadelphia, said officials.

No word yet on when the tracks could reopen.

It wasn't immediately clear why the backhoe was on the tracks. Federal Railroad Administration investigators joined local and Amtrak investigators in the search for clues Sunday. And the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) would head the investigation once it arrived at the scene, said Amtrak.

1 Dead, 5 Injured After Small Plane Crashes Into Car

One person was crushed to death and five are injured after a small plane crashed into a car on a San Diego freeway, officials confirmed to NBC 7 San Diego.

The single-engine, two-seat Lancair IV crashed into a car on Interstate 15 North near State Route 76 at approximately 9:15 a.m. Saturday morning, about 50 miles north of San Diego.

“One witness stated that they didn't hear the engine of the plane. Witnesses are saying without question the plane appeared to be having mechanical issues,” Chris Parent of CHP said.

The driver, identified as Aaron Meccann, had pulled over to sync his Bluetooth when the plane crash landed in the fourth lane of the freeway, sliding 250 feet and hitting the back of the Nissan, CHP authorities on scene said. CHP officials said there was no evidence landing gear was deployed and it appeared the plane had mechanical issues.

See photos from the scene of the crash here.

Authorities on scene told NBC 7 San Diego that a 38-year-old woman, identified as Antoinette Frances Isbelle, was sitting in the back passenger seat and was crushed to death at impact. Meccann, 43, who had pulled over to sync his Bluetooth, was taken to Palomar Hospital with lacerations above his eye; a 45-year-old female sitting in the front left passenger seat was taken to Sharp Linda Vista; a 36-year-old man sitting in the back passenger seat was taken to Sharp Linda Vista Hospital.

The pilot, a 60-year-old man, suffered severe head trauma, CHP officials said; his injuries are considered life-threatening. He was taken to Palomar Hospital. The passenger in the plane, a woman in her 50s, suffered non life-threatening injuries and was taken to Palomar Hospital.

Chris Saunders, a Palomar Hospital spokesman, said the extent of the victims' injuries and their conditions are unknown as they are in the ER.

Crews worked to clean up a fuel leak from either the plane or car following the crash.

Jacob Duncan was heading to work when he noticed a plane that appeared to be having trouble leveling out approaching the freeway.

“The plane touched down about 40 feet behind my car and it slid about another 40 feet,” Duncan recalled in an interview with NBC 7.

“One car was stopped on the shoulder,” he said. “It slammed right into the back of them.”

Duncan hopped out of his vehicle and with the help of other passersby tried to help the people in the aircraft and the vehicle.

Erika Uribe-Muñoz witnessed the crash and commented on NBC 7's Facebook page.

"We were on the opposite side of the freeway, we saw it as it was coming down to crash, pretty scary," she said.

Cyndi Young also saw the crash. "Was scary," she posted on our FB page. "Went right over our heads. Saw it hit the ground."

A Sig Alert was issued for the area as crews respond to the scene. Traffic quickly backed up in the area.

Duncan said in hindsight, it was obvious the pilot didn’t have much control of the plane and was trying his best to avoid the vehicles on the road.

“It’s sad for everyone involved,” he said.

If the car hadn’t been stopped on the freeway, Duncan said, he thinks the crash would’ve been avoidable.

“The pilot really I believe was trying his best,” he said.

Isbelle was a member of the San Diego Roller Derby according to the 'Aftershocks.' The team posted condolences on their Facebook page Saturday saying:

"We are hit very hard with the passing of Toni "Rockalicious" Isbelle. She was a great part of our family. Condolences to our sister league San Diego Roller Derby. Your big brothers will always be here for you for anything that you need. We love you Rockalicious!"

US Infrastructure Vulnerable to Hackers With Google, Passwords

Authorities say the country’s dams, stadiums, traffic controls and power grids can be accessed by anyone with simple passwords or no passwords at all, NBC News reported.

New York U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said the 2013 hack of the by an Iranian computer hack was a "frightening new frontier" of cybercrime that's "scary to think about."

Hamid Firoozi, the Iranian hacker charged earlier this month with breaking into the control system of the Bowman Avenue Dam in Rye Brook, New York, reportedly used a simple, legal search engine that surfs for and identifies unguarded control systems online. New York U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said the 2013 hack was “scary to think about.”

Authorities believe the threat of more attacks is growing exponentially, and have been warning America's private sector to adapt, but businesses have been slow to respond.

About 6.4 billion devices and control systems will be connected to the Internet in 2016, a 30 percent spike over 2015, according to a new report. By 2020, nearly 21 billion will be online.

Police in Manchester, Connecticut arrested a husband and wife after an argument at Royal Buffet got out of hand on Saturday night.

Manchester police say they were called to 410 West Middle Turnpike for a dispute that started as an argument over crab legs at the buffet table and escalated into a physical confrontation. During the scuffle, a 21-year-old man was punched in the face and lost a tooth.

That man's mother jumped in and used pepper spray on her son's attackers. Her actions were in self-defense and she is not facing any charges, according to police.

Police arrested Clifford Knight, 45, and Latoya Knight, 38, both of Windsor. Clifford Knight is charged with third-degree assault and disorder conduct. Latoya Knight is charged with disorderly conduct and threatening. Police said the suspects are husband and wife.

Clifford Knight was released on a $5,000 non-surety bond and Lataya Knight was released on a $2,500 non-surety bond. They are both expected in court on April 14.

The Manchester Fire Department responded to vent out the restaurant after the pepper spray was deployed.

The restaurant had to close while the health department assessed the air quality, but the restaurant said they opened for business at the usual time Sunday.

Editor’s note: Police previously thought the injured victim was a juvenile but have since determined the victim was a young adult. This story has been updated to reflect this.

Parrot Species in US May Rival Mexico

$

0

U.S. researchers are launching studies on Mexico's red-crowned parrot -- a species that has been adapting so well to living in cities in California and Texas after escaping from the pet trade that the population may now rival that in its native country.

The research comes amid debate over whether some of the birds flew across the border into Texas and should be listed under the Endangered Species Act.

Parrots in U.S. urban areas are just starting to draw attention from scientists because of their intelligence, resourcefulness and ability to adapt. There is also a growing realization that the city dwellers may offer a population that could help save certain species from extinction.

Parrots are thriving today in cities from Los Angeles to Brownsville, Texas, while in the tropics and subtropics, a third of all parrot species are at risk of going extinct because of habitat loss and the pet trade.

Most are believed to have escaped from importers or smugglers over the past half-century, when tens of thousands of parrots were brought into the United States from Latin America.

Scientists only now are starting to study them.

After doing most of his research in places like Peru, Donald Brightsmith is concentrating on the squawking birds nesting in Washingtonian palms lining avenues and roosting in the oak trees in front lawns in South Texas.

"Parrots in urban settings are of great interest to me," the Texas A&M University biologist said. "I see these as kind of future insurance policies."

Brightsmith has received a two-year grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to get an official count on the state's red-crowned parrot population and determine whether threats against them are increasing.

The loud, raucous birds have been shot at by angry homeowners and their young poached from nests.

In San Diego, a $5,000 reward is being offered for information on the killings of about a half-dozen parrots found shot this year.

The research could help drive ways to maintain the population that prefers the cities and suburbs.

"It's more of an urban planning, landscape, ecology issue and not so much how do we protect an area of pristine nature," he said. Brightsmith would like to team up with scientists in California.

Researchers want to someday study the gene pool to determine whether there are still genetically pure red-crowned parrots that could replenish the flocks in their native habitat.

"We could have a free backup stock in the US," Brightsmith said.

In Mexico, biologists are working on getting an updated count. The last study in 1994 estimated the population at 3,000 to 6,500 birds, declining from more than 100,000 in the 1950s because of deforestation and raids on the nesting young to feed the pet trade.

"We suspect the population in South Texas could rival the number found in the wild in Mexico," said Karl Berg, a biologist at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley who received a grant to study the red-crowned parrot in Brownsville.

Biologists estimate the population at close to 1,000 birds in Texas and more than 2,500 in California, where they are the most common of more than a dozen parrot species.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in 2011 listed it as an indigenous species because it is thought the parrots flew north across the border as lowland areas in Mexico were cleared in the 1980s for ranching and agriculture, though ornithologists debate that.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that same year announced that the red-crowned parrot warranted federal protection because of habitat loss and poaching for the pet trade. It remains a candidate, and the agency reviews it annually.

Some in the pet trade fear that a listing under the Endangered Species Act could prevent them from breeding the birds and moving them across state lines.

Conservationists question whether any of the birds are native to Texas and should be listed when there are so many species in need of protection in the United States.

"It seems odd to me," said Kimball Garrett, a parrot expert at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. "I don't know that there is enough evidence to show the birds flew for hundreds of miles from their native range and went across the border."

Brooke Durham said the birds need more protection. Durham runs a parrot rescue center called SoCal Parrot in the town of Jamul, east of San Diego, and treats up to 100 birds a year.

Recently at her sprawling home-turned-sanctuary, dozens of birds were being nursed for broken bones and pellet gun wounds. Most were red-crowned parrots.

Animal cruelty laws offer about the only protection for the birds in California, because they are not native to the state or migratory.

"People complain about the noise, but they're just not educated about the birds," she said. "They don't realize these birds are endangered."

Train Hits Car, Kills Man

One man is dead after a train struck a vehicle in a northern Illinois suburb on Sunday afternoon, according to police.

Authorities say the incident occurred around 3 p.m. at the Green Street Crossing in Somonauk, a town located about 60 miles west of Chicago. Police say the gates were down and a man drove his car around them.

An Amtrak train traveling westbound from Union Station in Chicago to California struck the car, stopping about a half mile down from the crossing with the vehicle still in front of the train, the Somonauk Fire Department said.

A 28-year-old man from Sandwich, Illinois, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials confirmed.

Firefighters extricated the victim and removed the vehicle. The 264 passengers and 9 Amtrak crew members aboard the train were checked by emergency medical service staff, and no injuries were reported.

The BNSF line was temporarily stopped but as of 8:30 p.m., the Amtrak train began moving again.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash.
