The main road leading out of Ocean Beach is expected to be closed for hours after a motorcycle severed his foot in a crash Saturday evening.

A witness told NBC 7 a 36-year-old man on a Suzuki motorcycle was speeding between vehicles, heading toward eastbound Interstate 8 on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard at about 6:10 p.m.

Waiting at the intersection of Sunset Cliffs and Nimitz was a 52-year-old man in a Dodge vehicle. When his light turned green, the driver moved northbound on Nimitz into the intersection.

He said that's when he felt an impact, but he didn't know what it was.

Police say the motorcyclist a red light and rammed into the Dodge's front end. Police say he suffered a severed right foot and was taken to UCSD Medical Center for nonlife-threatening injuries.

Officials say alcohol was a factor in the crash.

CHP issued a Sig Alert for the area while the crash was cleared. The closure is expected to last at least four hours, CHP officials say.

No one has been cited in the crash.

No further details were released.

In an ongoing financing effort for the San Salvador project, $500,000 has just been donated to the Maritime Museum.

The donation came from the Hervey Family Fund at the San Diego Foundation for the Spanish galleon replica ship that Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sailed into San Diego Bay in September of 1542.

“The Hervey family have been among the foremost contributors to making San Diego one of the
great places to live – with education, literacy, heritage and culture as themes to their legacy,” said Museum President and CEO Raymond Ashley. “This full-scale, seaworthy replica of Cabrillo’s galleon will serve both to educate and fuel the imaginations of tens of thousands of children in our region.”

Built over a period of four years in a parking lot across from the airport, The San Salvador made its public debut at the Embarcadero’s Festival of Sail Labor Day weekend.

The replica ship, which will stay in the San Diego Harbor for several months before sailing to different ports along the coast, will serve as a floating classroom and monument to history for thousands of students and visitors each year.

DMV to End Saturday Hours

The DMV announced Wednesday its last day of Saturday hours will be October 24.

The department added Saturday to its schedule after Assembly Bill 60, a law allowing undocumented immigrants to apply for drivers licenses in California, went into effect in January.

People inundated DMV offices across the state in hopes of getting identification, prompting 60 offices statewide to stay open Saturdays to meet the demand.

“By providing extended hours, we have been able to successfully serve the enormous influx of Assembly Bill 60 (AB 60) driver license applicants while continuing to provide timely service to all our customers,” said DMV Director Jean Shiomoto. “Now that the initial wave of AB 60 applicants has subsided and we have returned to normal operations, we no longer need to keep our field offices open on Saturdays.”

An estimated 487,000 have gotten licenses under the law, and the DMV expects they will issue 1.4 million by 2018.

Rockies beat Padres, 10-2 in Colorado

The Padres were in Colorado Saturday night to take on the Rockies for game two of the series.

There’s no other way to say this, except: It wasn't pretty.

Padres’ southpaw Robbie Erlin got his first major league start since September of last year, and it was a rough one. He lasted three innings.

In the first inning, Rockies catcher Tom Murphy notched his first hit in the majors -- a single to left – to drive in the fourth run of the inning and make it 4-0 Rockies.

San Diego trailed by five runs in the third but finally got on the board with an RBI single by outfielder Justin Upton to make it 5-1, Rockies.

In the sixth, the Padres go yard again, this one from Jedd Gyorko.

Pitcher Casey Kelley took the mound in the seventh inning. It's the first time he's pitched in a major league game since 2012 -- and he struck out Nolan Arenado. That was a bright spot, because this one ended 10-2, Colorado.

San Diego will try and avoid a sweep by the Rockies in Sunday’s afternoon game.

WATCH: Orcas Playfully Pop Up Around SD Boat

They may be nicknamed “killer whales,” but a pod of orcas seemed no more than curious as they swam around a boat off the coast of San Diego.

Ben Lewis caught the magnificent sight on video as he and fellow San Diego lifeguard Todd Rice took a 20-foot panga boat about five miles from Point Loma on Sept. 10.

He said he could not tell what the dark shapes in the water were until they came closer to their vessel. Lewis estimates there were about 30 whales in the pod, varying in age and size.

According to SeaWorld spokesman Dave Koontz, these were transient orcas that are spotted along the California coast from time to time.

Little is known about their migratory patterns, he said, but it appears in this case, they may have been exploring some new surroundings, like the boat.

“Such occurrences have charmed mariners since man has taken to the ocean, and continues to delight sailors today,” Koontz said in an email Thursday.

Safari Park Rhino Continues to Ail

Nola, one of only four northern white rhinos left in the world, underwent a medical procedure at the Safari Park Thursday.

This is Nola’s second procedure this month. Vets are treating the endangered rhino for an abscess on her hip, which has plagued her since May.

Originally the abscess seemed to heal with antibiotics, but in late summer it reemerged. Since her procedure earlier this month she has been once again on antibiotics and keepers are flushing the abscess site daily.

During Thursday’s procedure keepers opened the abscess site to allow it to drain and ease built-up pressure that can cause pain. A fine needle aspiration, skin samples, and blood tests were also taken.

“We are treating Nola for a bacterial infection on her right hip,” stated Dr. Jim Oosterhuis, principal veterinarian at the Safari Park. “The inside of the abscess is very hard, and we want to determine what may be causing this. At this point, we simply don’t know. Our main priority now is to keep Nola comfortable; we will continue to monitor her and keep her on her daily treatment plan until we know more or until the abscess properly heals.”

Vets gave Nola, 41, a mild sedation during treatment and keepers rubbed her back and ears to keep her comfortable. Afterwards the elderly animal was able to roam around her habitat as usual. While the abscess is sore to the touch she seems to be feeling well and is eating and walking normally. Results from tests are expected within two weeks.

Northern white rhinos have been hunted to near extinction for their horns, which are believed in some cultures to possess healing powers.

The Safari Park is also using science to fight the rhino’s extinction. The Frozen Zoo, in collaboration with the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, is a genetic project to help save endangered species.

The zoo has viable stem cells taken from twelve white rhinos to restore genetic variation. The rhino stem cells, first saved in 1979, can be used to reproduce any tissue in the rhino’s body, the zoo says.

Appeal Denied for Convicted Cop Killer

A California appeals court refused to overturn the murder conviction against Alex Charfauros, who is serving time after San Diego Police Officer Christopher Wilson was shot and killed in his apartment.

Charfauros was sentenced in 2013 to 85 years in prison, plus another 11 years, for second-degree murder. In his appeal filed last October, the convict said there was insufficient evidence to uphold his conviction.

On Friday, the 4th Appellate District Court denied his appeal and rejected a claim that his trial judge improperly imposed an enhanced sentence. As a result, Charfauros will likely die in prison, for he will not be up for parole for 94 years.

On Oct. 27, 2010, Wilson and other officers were providing backup to probation officers, searching for a dangerous parole violator, Holim Lee, inside Charfaurous’ Bay Terraces apartment.

When officers kicked open a bedroom door, Wilson was fatally shot in the head.

Charfauros did not fire the shot that killed Wilson, but he lied to police about the potential danger inside after he was pulled from the apartment, prosecutors said.

Investigators believe Lee or another heavily armed suspect, Lucky Xayasene, likely pulled the trigger. The two suspects killed themselves before they were captured.

More than a third of Republican voters say that Carly Fiorina performed best in the Wednesday night debate on CNN, according to the latest NBC News online survey conducted by SurveyMonkey from Wednesday through through.

But debates alone rarely move poll numbers in big ways, and Trump continues to lead the crowded field with 29 percent of Republican and independent voters who lean Republican saying they would cast their vote for him.

Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina remain on an upward trajectory, now filling in the second and third spots. Jeb Bush is holding steady at 8%, about the same level of support he's seen since April in NBC News/SurveyMonkey polling.

Yukiya Amano, chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), met with President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif in Tehran Sunday, as a key deadline for the nuclear deal looms, NBC News reported.

Amano's visit comes less than a month before an Oct. 15 deadline to gather information on allegations made by the West that Iran tried to build atomic weapons.

Tehran has long described the allegations as based on false intelligence from the United States, Israel and other adversaries. A final U.N. assessment is due in December.

After their meeting, Rouhani released a statement that said Iran "has not and will not seek any WMDs because of its religious beliefs and its military doctrine."

Yemen Houthi Rebels Free 2 American Hostages

Two Americans held for nearly six months in war-ravaged Yemen have been released and sent to Oman, the White House said Sunday.

NBC News confirmed the identities of the freed men as Scott Darden, a 45-year-old working for a New Orleans logistics firm, and Sam Farran, a 54-year-old security consultant from Michigan.

An administration official tells NBC News securing their release was complicated given the lack of cooperation from the Houthi rebels, as well as the violence and instability in the region. The recently created Hostage Recovery Fusion Cell, led by the FBI, helped with the effort, according to the official.

Darden and Farran had been held since March 27 after being detained by Shiite Houthi rebels fighting government forces in the Yemeni capital Sanaa.

An Illinois man has been charged with the 1985 murder of a 15-year-old girl in west suburban Glen Ellyn.

Michael R. Jones, 62, of Champaign was charged with two counts of murder and one count of aggravated criminal sexual assault, according to the DuPage County sheriff’s office.

[[328425041, L]]

Kristina Wesselman, who was 15 at the time of her murder, was walking home from the Jewel near Butterfield Road and Route 53 in unincorporated Glen Ellyn on July 21, 1985, when she was murdered, according to police. She was last seen walking on a well-traveled path back toward her home.

The teen's mother reported her missing when she never made it back home, and Kristina's body was found hours later by sheriff's detectives in a field near the path where she was last seen walking.

Kristina was a student and class president who was well known by her neighbors, some of whom still live on the same street. They say they remember her walking her dog up and down the block every day.

"It was really a surprise to everybody," said neighbor Sandy Menger, who was at a family reunion in Ohio when he first heard news of the murder. "It was just devastating to everybody."

On Sept. 10, the sheriff’s office obtained new information regarding the Wesselman case, according to police. Cold case detectives subsequently investigated the new information and located Jones.

A search warrant was conducted Friday at Jones’s home in the 2500 block of Southmoor Drive in Champaign, and he was charged Sunday, police said. He is being held at the DuPage County Jail and is scheduled to appear in bond court Monday.

“Since the date of the tragic murder, the case has remained open and active,” Sheriff John Zaruba said in the statement. “Over the last 30 years the Sheriff’s Cold Case Unit has worked hundreds of leads that have sent them across the nation and thousands of man hours have been spent to catch the killer in his horrendous crime.”

The case remains under investigation and anyone with information about the case, or any other incidents involving ones, are asked to call the sheriff’s office at (630) 407-2400 or text anonymous tips to 247637 and include the word Sheriff in the message.

19 People Rescued After Boat Sinks

Nineteen people were rescued from the East River on Sunday afternoon after their dragon-team boat took on water and sank.

No one was hurt in the incident, which happened just after two members of the team became engaged to be married.

"He proposed before we went down, thankfully," Vicky Lee told NBC 4 New York.

Waves apparently came over the sides of the vessel, typically used in the annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York. The boat was submerged by the time rescuers arrived, U.S. Coast Guard officials said.

The boat, belonging to the Azumi Rowing Club, was being paddling to Whitestone in Queens. It began to take on water at about 1:30 p.m. near College Point, fire officials said.

The 19 people, all of whom were wearing life jackets, were taken to the College Point Yacht Club in good condition.

Dragon boats are sleek boats typically decorated with Chinese dragon heads and tails. The boats are raced during the festival.
