Former Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson hosted his first-ever “LT 5K” run in San Diego Saturday to raise money for his Tomlinson’s Touching Lives Foundation.
More than 2,000 participants -- in addition to about 500 spectators -- turned out for LT’s inaugural walk and fun run, which was held at NTC Park at Liberty Station.
Tomlinson said the family-friendly event was all about “getting out and being active.”
He said proceeds raised at the run would benefit his foundation, particularly in the organization’s efforts to build youth learning centers and fund local after-school programs.
“I grew up in after-school programs, so I know the benefits of being a part of such programs. The [Tomlinson Touching Lives] foundation wants to do the same thing here in San Diego, and it starts today. This event will help fund our new efforts in San Diego,” said Tomlinson.
According to the event website, 28-year-old San Diego resident Peter Denton won the race with a time of 16 minutes and 19 seconds. The top female finisher was La Jolla resident Nihal Kayali, 22, who finished in 17 minutes and 5 seconds.
LT himself finished the 5K with a time of 24 minutes and 4 seconds.
No. 21 said he felt the love and support from the San Diego community at the inaugural race.
The beloved Bolts player had this to say to supporters on Saturday:
“I am very appreciative of the San Diego community for coming out to support my first 5K. I felt like I was back at Qualcomm Stadium getting ready to play football with the amount of people there and the energy they had. More importantly, we were able to raise money and awareness to support our youth thorough our foundation, Tomlinson's Touching Lives.”
The Tomlinson’s Touching Lives Foundation is designed to promote educational, social and cultural awareness and to promote positive self-esteem in children. The organization aims to enhance the lives of both children and communities.
