A brush fire burned near Valley Center on Friday, according to officials.

The fire started around 10:45 a.m. at Lilac Road and Sierra Rojo Road, and homes are in the area. Heavy smoke can be seen from miles away.

An air tanker could be seen making fire retardant drops and fire crews are at the scene.

Firefighters extinguished the fire when it reached 5 acres, according to CAL Fire. They are expected to remain at the scene to ensure there are no hot spots.

No homes were damaged.

Ken Boyd and Donna Luce have been living along this rural stretch of road for over 20 years. But never before has this much smoke, or this many flames, got so up close and personal.

"Well we’ve had fires in valley center but nothing this close to me," Boyd said. "This was a scary one for me."

Two aircrafts, four CAL Fire engines and two hand crews responded to the scene. The fire burned a mixture of grass, trees and palm trees.
