A suspicious device in Kearny Mesa is being investigated by the San Diego Fire Department.
The item was spotted around 2:20 p.m. at 7533 Ronson Rd. inside a car compound. Officials have blocked off Ronson Road between Rufner and Convoy Street.
A California Highway Patrol officer found what looked like a blasting cap in the trunk of a van, according to SDFD spokesperson Maurice Luque. The car belonged to the owner of the tow yard, who lent it to a friend. The car owner said the friend was in an accident and the car was then towed back to the yard.
Luque said the owner reported a suspicious looking object inside the van, measuring about 7 inches long, with a cylindrical shape complete with wires and a battery. A few ammunition cans were also found inside the car.
An NBC 7 crew at the scene said there are officers and firefighters in the area. Luque also said MAST and Bomb Squad units are investigating, and recently ignited a controlled detonation.
No injuries were reported.
