A Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officer died in a car accident Monday morning in Warner Springs.
The accident happened around 7:20 a.m. on Monday on state Route 79 and San Felipe Road, according to CHP. Officers believe the driver lost control of the car and rolled over. No other vehicle was involved.
The 46-year-old corrections officer and a K-9 unit dog inside the vehicle died during the incident, according to California Highway Patrol. Medics took the officer to a nearby fire station where he died. His name has not been released.
The vehicle was traveling to a facility on Sunrise Highway to perform a search with three other K-9 units, according to CHP officer Brian Pennings.
Officers have closed SR-79 at San Felipe Road. Both sides of the highway were shut down this morning for "long term closure."
