About $2.1 million in "rubberized slurries" will be spread across San Diego County roads after supervisors unanimously approved an action to add the mixture to run-down roadways.
The material is a combination of recycled tires, asphalt, water and emulsifiers. The slurry coats roadways to reduce noise and increase traction.
It also helps roads last longer. The slurry will be added to unincorporated areas of the county such as Encinitas, Boulevard, Borrego Springs, Jamul, Julian and Pala.
Supervisors voted on the issue Wednesday. Their approval is the first step in coating the roads. Now, bidding begins to determine which company will work with the county to resurface the roads.
Work should begin in spring and be completed by winter of next year.
