Ezell Ford Witness Fatally Shot

0

A man who was fatally shot as he sat in a car in South Los Angeles, California, on Friday night was a possible witness in the Ezell Ford police shooting case, an attorney for the Ford family said.

The slain man was identified by the LA County Coroner's Office as 46-year-old Leroy Hill. He was gunned down about 11:49 p.m. near 65th Street and Broadway in what investigators said was a possible gang-related shooting.

Hill was killed in the same neighborhood where Ford, a 25-year-old mentally ill man, was killed by LAPD officers last August.

An attorney for the Ford family said Hill was a witness in that case, but his death was unlikely to affect any legal proceeding connected to the Ford incident.

After he was shot, Hill crashed his car and was later pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Officers later said another person also approached Hill on a bike, and that one of the two shot the him in the torso.

Police have not found the gunman and do not have a description, officers said.

Ford, 25, was shot Aug. 11 when LAPD Officers Sharlton Wampler and Antonio Villegas confronted Ford, who police said was making "suspicious movements" when he turned and "grabbed one of the officers."

Seattle Seahawks star running back Marshawn Lynch was reportedly involved in a fight outside a San Francisco, California, bar Friday night, according to TMZ Sports.

Lynch was reportedly leaving the bar with his group when a man, who may have been intoxicated, started to repeatedly call the football star a "Seattle sea chicken." That is when the fight started between the man and Lynch's friends, TMZ Sports said.

The video appears to show Lynch trying to pull people away from the fight. A witness told TMZ Sports Lynch threw punches before walking away.

San Francisco police said they responded to an incident at the bar, but nobody matching Lynch's name was arrested, cited, or named.

LAPD Officer Sought in Slaying

A rookie Los Angeles Police Department officer was wanted for questioning in connection with the murder of a man in Pomona, California, officials said Saturday.

Henry Solis, a 27-year-old probationary officer, was sought as a "person of interest," Pomona Police Department officials said.

"Solis' whereabouts is unknown, and we have reason to believe that he knows the police are looking to talk with him," Pomona police said in a news release.

LAPD officials said Solis did not show up to work Saturday and they have not been able to locate him. Foul play was not believed to be a factor in the officer's disappearance.

LAPD Commander Andrew Smith said Solis was a "probationer police officer" who entered the police academy in June 2014. Solis was assigned to Devonshire Division in November 2014 and has been working there with a training officer. His probationary period was set to end in November 2015.

Police were searching for Solis in connection with the killing of a 23-year-old man who was shot after getting into a fight with another man in Pomona early Friday morning.

Solis was off-duty at the time, police said.

Officers responding to multiple 911 calls of shots fired in the area of Third and Main streets about 3:30 a.m. found the victim suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper body, Pomona Police Department officials said.

The victim, identified by police as Ontario resident Salome Rodriguez, Jr., was taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, where he later died.

Homicide detectives said Rodriguez and the gunman had gotten into a "physical altercation" prior to the shooting. They don't believe the men knew each other and say the incident was not gang related.

Police said a compact car was seen leaving the area after the shooting, but it was unknown if it was connected to the incident.

Solis drives a silver or gray 2013 Volkswagen Jetta with California license plate 7FAS527. He is described as 5-foot-9-inches tall, weighing 185 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

Smith said "without getting into the nuts and bolts" of the investigation, the LAPD was helping Pomona police in locating Solis, but that the case was ultimately a "Pomona PD caper."

Rodriguez's friends said they were in disbelief to hear that an LAPD officer was wanted in connection with his murder.

The victim was a "hard worker, great friend, upbeat fun guy," said George Martinez. “No reason to get in a fight with anybody. Just a great guy all around."

People gathered at the intersection in prayer Saturday night.

"Pomona PD has been really good about holding it down here in Pomona, just to hear that somebody from the Los Angeles Police Department is involved is unbelievable,” said bartender Jose Baez.

Anyone with information on the incident was asked to call Pomona police at 909-620-2085.

NBC4's Pablo Kay and Kate Larsen contributed to this report.

North County firefighters received an award for their work done to rescue a dog from between two storage containers last week.

PETA gave a Compassionate Fire Department award to the firefighters at Carlsbad and Oceanside Fire Departments Wednesday.

"San Diego County residents are lucky to have compassionate first responders ready to rush to the aid of people and animals," says PETA Senior Director Colleen O'Brien in a statement. "PETA hopes their quick thinking and determination will inspire others to come to the aid of animals in need."

The firefighters worked to rescue Spike, a dog that was wedged between two large storage containers when he was playing with children at the South Oceanside Elementary School playground on South Horne Street.

Jaws of life were used to pry the containers apart and free the 12-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback from where he had gotten stuck, six feet into the space.

The departments will receive a framed certificate, a box of vegan chocolates and a copy of The Engine 2 Diet, a Texas firefighter's 28-day plan for staying in prime firefighting shape by eating a plant-based diet.

Tourists Carjacked at Knifepoint in Old Town Area

A husband and wife visiting San Diego became victims of a carjacking Saturday when an unknown man wielding a knife stole their rental car, police confirmed.

The crime happened at around 1 p.m. at 3860 Old Town Ave. Police said the couple drove into an Arco gas station. The husband went inside and left the engine running while his wife waited in the car.

Moments later, a stranger opened the door and sat down in the driver’s seat, brandishing a knife. He told the woman to get out. She followed his orders and he took off in the rental car.

Police said the victims described the carjacking suspect as a white man in his 40s, measuring approximately 5-foot-7 with a thin build. He had curly, reddish-blonde hair and was wearing a white, orange and green striped polo shirt and jeans.

Police said the stolen car is a silver 2015 Nissan Versa with a Nevada license plate of 714APJ. The passenger rear tail light of the vehicle is broken and is covered with red tape.

One witness told NBC 7 the suspect looked like he may have been a transient.

“He wasn’t hesitating at all. He looked like he knew what he wanted and what he was going to get,” the witness said.

An undercover robbery detective said the tourist couple is from Washington. They had their luggage, clothing and other personal items inside the car.

Police have put out an alert to patrol cars and are asking the public to keep an eye out for the stolen vehicle. The investigation is ongoing. The tourists were not injured in the incident.

Rattlesnake Bites Man at Ocean Beach

A man was bit by a rattlesnake at the Ocean Beach dog beach, the San Diego Fire Department said.

The incident happened around 2:25 p.m. on Voltaire Street.

The adult man was transported to the UC San Diego Medical Center.

The condition of the victim is unknown.

Last year, warmer weather at the start of the year resulted in more than triple the number of rattlesnake calls to the County's Department of Animal Services.

Since Jan. 1, it had received 78 calls reporting rattlesnakes across San Diego County. That’s more than three times the number of rattlesnake calls during this same time period in 2013, when 24 calls came in.

Typically, rattlesnakes wait until spring to come out of hibernation. DAS recommends locals discourage the critters from making themselves at home in yards by getting rid of any possible shelter or food for rattlesnakes, including heaps of trash, wood piles, mice and rats.

Also, if you spot a rattlesnake on your property, calmly back away from the critter and leave it alone. Then, call DAS for assistance in safely removing the snake.

DAS also suggests being aware of your surroundings at all times if you are walking anywhere snakes might be, which means avoiding becoming distracted by your cell phone. If you’re walking your dog, keep it on a leash, that way you can pull your pet away quickly if you encounter a rattlesnake.

Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes while walking or hiking and stay on paths or trails, and avoid tall grass, weeds and brush where snakes might hide. Also, make sure you can always see the path ahead of you and look for snakes that might blend into the ground before picking up rocks or sticks.

Residents of unincorporated areas of San Diego County or the cities of Carlsbad, Del Mar, Encinitas, San Diego, Santee or Solana Beach can call DAS at (619) 236-2341 to report a rattlesnake sighting. All other residents can call the animal control agency for their respective city.

If you’re bitten by a rattlesnake, immediately call 911 and remove any constricting clothing or accessories like rings or watches.

Operation Cracks Down on Alcohol Sale to Minors

An undercover operation across California aimed to crack down on underage drinking by convenience stores and in front of liquor stores.

Hundreds of law enforcement agencies across the state participated in the operation, dubbed

“Shoulder Tap.” on Saturday. “Shoulder Tap” is shorthand used to describe when teenagers ask adults to buy them alcohol while they wait in front of liquor or convenience stores.

The operation, which took place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. across the county, netted one arrest and citation Saturday for the San Diego Sheriff’s Department (SDSD).

During the operation, 18-year-old volunteer decoys visited six stores in Santee and Lakeside and indicated to adults that he or she was a minor and could not buy alcohol.

Deputies and Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) waited nearby to arrest anyone who would buy or sell the alcohol to the teen decoys in an effort to reduce the availability of alcohol to minors.

The operation was conducted as a part of a $100,000 grant from the ABC and money will go toward fighting alcohol-related crimes and educating ABC-licensed businesses.

Tattoo Artist Helps Local Woman Heal

Breast cancer survivor Juanita Williams consults with tattoo artist Shane Wallin about covering up the scars from her double mastectomy.

"I want to cover these scars and see beauty. I would like angel wings. And I would like it to be real colorful. Very bright pink," Juanita tells Shane.

"I was thinking of doing some wings that roll over your shoulder. Something faceted. A jewel effect. Something pretty and antique," says Shane.

With a design in mind, Shane gets started on the pattern at his new shop in Pacific Beach, Garnet Tattoo. It will take a few hours to create his design.

Juanita is Shane's first client in San Diego, but he's been a tattoo artist for more than 20 years.

"With mastectomy work, it's a restorative quality. It's something that's been taken away that you're giving back. You're giving someone self-esteem. You're giving them confidence. You're making them feel sexy again," says Shane.

Shane created his first tattoo for a breast cancer survivor a couple of years ago, by chance, when a woman walked into his tattoo shop in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

He did a tattoo resembling a lace bra on her.

"If I can use my abilities and my job to make people feel better, then I'm all for it," says Shane.

In October, he worked with P.INK (Personal Ink) which connects survivors with tattoo artists.

Juanita found out about the organization through social media.

"I saw all the breast tattoos. And I cried because I knew there was hope for me."

Juanita contacted P.INK (Personal Ink) and the organization put her in touch with Shane.

"I've been feeling depressed about my scars, because I don't feel that I'm sexy."

The tattoo will take about ten hours and a few sessions to complete.

Shane is designing and applying Juanita's tattoo, pro bono.

He's trying to raise awareness about P.INK (Personal Ink), and let the medical community know more about tattoos as an alternative way to heal.

Juanita says she hopes the tattoo will help her feel better about her scars, and help her remember she is a cancer survivor.

"I want angel wings for all the women who passed away from breast cancer," says Juanita.

A Historic Weekend of Weather for San Diego

0
0

This is the third straight day of record heat for San Diego, and it hasn’t even been close.

Sunday’s previous record high of 80 degrees was history before the clock even struck 10:00am.

Saturday’s record high of 83° at Lindbergh Field had stood since 1951. We beat it before noon.

In fact, Saturday’s high of 90 degrees is the seventh hottest March day on record dating back to 1874. And it was the first time we've hit 90 degrees in March in more than a decade. The all-time record for hottest day in March is 99 degrees, set on March 29th, 1879.

All over the county, records have been falling. Chula Vista hit 94° on Saturday, shattering the previous mark by 16 degrees. Vista and Alpine also broke records. And that’s the story all over the Southern California right now. In Santa Ana, Saturday’s high temperature eclipsed a mark that has been on the books since 1926!

And while, the heat should gradually subside by mid-week, we are looking at another week without any rain. After a promising start to the rainy season back in November and December, San Diego has been parched.

Since January 1st, we have only received 1.39 inches of rain at Lindbergh Field. That’s about a third of normal, and most of it came within a two day period during our last storm. Barring an unexpected miracle March finish, we are looking at another year with below normal rainfall. That will make five in a row.

One Dead, Another Wounded After Poway Shooting

Sheriff's deputies are investigating an overnight shooting that left one man dead and another wounded in Poway.

The incident happened at approximately 1:35 a.m. Sunday on the 13400 block of Frame Road.

Neighbors in the area told NBC 7 they heard gunshots in the area, which they said is rare for the neighborhood.

When officials arrived, they found a dead adult male in the backyard of the house with an apparent gunshot wound to his upper body, deputies said.

Sheriff’s Deputies said another adult male at the residence was also shot in the upper body. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and released to detectives for questioning. Both men were in their 40s.

The cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner's Office.

Police said they have no suspects at this time.

18 Units Responding to Mount Soledad House Fire

Eighteen units are responding to a house fire in La Jolla, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said.

The fire broke out shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday on the 5400 block of Caminito Aguar in the Mount Soledad area.

Fire officials said no one was transported and no one was injured.

The elderly homeowner said they were not home at the time and were installing a new water heater in the garage. The person installing the heater was by himself and started a fire by accident, the homeowner said.

That fire spread to the attick and roof. Firefighters are still putting out hot spots on the ceiling, the homeowner said, and there is lots of smoke in the area.

Aztecs Learn Their NCAA Tournament Seed

0

The Aztecs road to the Final Four will have to go through Charlotte, NC. And St. John’s. And possibly Duke.

San Diego State’s men’s basketball team found out Sunday they are the #8 seed in the South Region of the 2015 NCAA Tournament.  Their opening game will be against St. John’s University. If they’re able to survive that one, the Aztecs would likely have a meeting with the Duke Blue Devils, the #1 seed in the South.

While the Aztecs thrive on defense, allowing the second-fewest points per game in the nation,  the Red Storm has a few guys who can light up the scoreboard, and it seems like all of them are guards. Their back court of D'Angelo Harrison, Rysheed Jordan, Sir'Domninic Pointer and Phil Greene IV (yes, all guards) combined averages 58.5 points per game, which is 5.4 points per game more than San Diego State allows an entire team.

SDSU's leading scorer, forward Winston Shepard, only averages 11.1 points per game.

St. John's has talent, but is also a streaky team. Towards the end of the year they won seven of eight games, then lost their last two against Villanova and Providence by a total of 56 points. The Aztecs did not suffer back-to-back losses all season.

SDSU, the Mountain West Conference regular season co-champions, went to the Sweet 16 and narrowly lost to Arizona last year. Both of their Sweet 16 appearances have come when they were a top-4 seed in the West, so not only do they have to fight through a tough draw, but they have to overcome history to make a deep run.

Pregnant Woman Hospitalized After Shooting

A pregnant woman remained hospitalized Monday morning after a man walked up to her and opened fire in a Pico-Union District park, police said.

The pregnant woman, 18 to 19 years old, was out of surgery in critical but stable condition as of just before 9 a.m. Officials said the baby doesn't appear to have been hit by gunfire.

The woman, six to seven months pregnant, was walking along the basketball courts at Toberman Park in the Pico-Union District west of downtown Los Angeles at about 10:30 p.m. when a man approached her. Without provocation, the man shot the woman several times, according to the LAPD Rampart Station.

A witness told NBC4 he heard about six rounds fired.

After officials arrived on-scene, she was transferred to a trauma center and underwent emergency surgery.

It was unclear at the time if the man and the woman knew each other, the LAPD said.

Police searched for the man, and asked that any witnesses with information on the shooting come forward.

Cassandra C. Testifies in Court

A teenager taken into Connecticut state custody and forced by the state to get chemotherapy treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma testified in court on Monday in hopes of leaving the hospital to finish her treatments.

Seventeen-year-old Cassandra C., who remains away from home under the care of the state, didn't want chemotherapy and was previously fighting the state so she wouldn't have to get the treatment, but she lost in court so she was forced to undergo chemo. She has since gone into remission.

People Magazine reports that Cassandra C's attorney's asked a state court if she could leave the hospital to finish chemotherapy. She testified remotely for about an hour on Monday, one of her attorneys said, though details of her testimony were not available. No television cameras were allowed inside the courtroom.

In a statement to NBC Connecticut in January, DCF officials said they were exploring options for Cassandra C. to live in a specialized group home when she was released from the hospital.

Court documents show DCF took custody of her when she ran away from home after two days of chemotherapy and missed medical appointments. Her mother, Jackie Fortin, plans to fight those claims.

The state's highest court reviewed the case under an emergency appeal filed by attorneys representing Cassandra and her mother, taking up an issue previously decided by several other states – whether some minors are mature enough to make decisions about their own bodies.

The judges ultimately decided that Cassandra is not mature and will continue to receive chemotherapy. She turns 18 in September, a year after her cancer diagnosis.
