Two Oceanside teenagers are in jail after assaulting a man and chasing him down in their car in Carlsbad early Sunday morning.

Carlsbad police said an 18-year-old man pulled a bandana over his face before threatening the driver of a nearby vehicle with a knife on Tamarack Avenue near Jefferson Street just after 4 a.m.. A few seconds later, a second 18-year-old man approached the passenger side of the car and hit it with a baseball bat.

The victim used a taser to combat the suspects, hitting one of the teens in the chest, police said.

The driver then took off down Tamarack Avenue and the two suspects got in their vehicle and chased him. Police said the chase continued from Tamarack Avenue to Carlsbad Avenue and onto Interstate 5, reaching speeds of up to 100mph.

The suspects apparently tried to force the victim off the road several times during the chase.

Officers finally located the vehicles on I-5 and were able to stop and search the suspect vehicle. Inside they found a juvenile passenger, who was found to have not committed a crime and was released to family, the sheath to a knife and a crowbar, according to police.

The baseball bat was recovered at the originally scene and knife was not found.

Carlsbad police said Jim Gonzalez and Hector Zamora of Oceanside were booked into Vista Detention Facility for assault with a deadly weapon, child endangerment, conspiracy and gang enhancements for the attack.

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to contact the City of Carlsbad Police Department at (760) 931-2100.

Viral Video of Shelter Dog Dragged

An escaped dog seen being dragged down the hallway of an animal shelter in a viral video has ignited a firestorm in Southern California, with viewers upset by the perceived indifference of shelter staff.

The dog who was so reluctant to follow its handler down the hallway at the Hesperia Animal Shelter is named Mia. She's five or six years old, and escaped from her home in Hesperia last week, according to her owner, Tracie Carpenter.

Carpenter only saw the video, posted to a private Facebook group, after a friend notified her to it. It shows Mia struggling against her leash as she is dragged the length of a hallway, apparently while other workers look on.

Carpenter was incensed.

"The fact that there's three people in the video watching the dog being (dragged) by it's neck all the way down the hallway -- and nobody said anything -- is beyond frustrating," Carpenter said.

Mia had escaped from home and was picked up after a few days by shelter workers, Carpenter said. A neighbor saw Mia get picked up, so Carpenter called the shelter, which kept the dog overnight so it could spay her. Mia was picked up on Friday, Feb. 12.

In a post on the Hesperia Animal Shelter's Facebook page Thursday, officials said city management is investigating what happened, and offered "our sincerest apologies."

"Shelter animals, as well as members of the community, deserve better and we vow to do better," the post said.

But commenters in the hundreds remained angry at the staff for ignoring that the dog was being dragged.

"She's got both hands behind her back like she's pulling a wagon," dog trainer Charlie Brugnola told the Victorville Daily Press.

The Hesperia City Council is planning on holding a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday so residents can voice any concerns about the video.

The city is encouraging anyone with concerns to email socialmedia@cityofhesperia.us.

CA Venues Cancel Bill Cosby's Shows

A pair of major venues in the Bay Area of California have cancelled scheduled appearances from Bill Cosby.

The Flint Center in Cupertino and The Wells Fargo Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa have postponed and not rescheduled Cosby's June 6 and 7 shows after a Change.org campaign pressured venues into canceling the shows.

"There was a pretty strong sentiment from the Foothill/DeAnza college community that it was their feeling that given the allegations surrounding Mr. Cosby that it was their preference the Flint Center not host the event," Flint Center General Manager Paula Davis said.

Dolores Edelstein was one of the organizers for the petition.

"With any type of sexual assault or rape, the shame and the fear lies on the side of the victim. And what really should happen is the shame should belong to the perpetrator," Edelstein said. "But because of the statute of limitations women feel like, they just can’t speak up."

Some Flint Center patrons don't agree with the decision to cancel Cosby's appearances.

"I think it's unfair and incorrect," Cupertino-resident Naeem Zafar said. "The whole principal is that we presume innocent until convicted."

A retired New York police officer killed two of his children Saturday before taking his own life, authorities said.

Glen Hochman, 52, of Harrison, New York, who recently retired from the police force, killed himself after killing his daughters, Alyssa and Deanna, they said.

"The White Plains Police Department is shocked and horrified by the news of this tragic event," said David Chong, White Plains public safety commissioner. "We can only pray for the Hochman family."

Hochman served the department for more than 22 years "with integrity," he said. He received a lifesaving award from the department last year, according to the public safety website.

Allysa Hochman, a senior at Harrison High School, and her younger sister were victims of an "incomprehensible tragedy," according to a statement released by Superintendent of Schools Louis N. Wool.

He added that the school would open at noon and have grief counseling available for students and staff.

Further details were unavailable.

Party Bus Runs Over, Drags Man

A driver of party bus ran over and dragged a man hundreds of feet in Southern California early Saturday, leaving the victim severely injured in what investigators are calling a hit-and-run.

The victim, identified by family members as Efren Virgen Jr., was walking on Fairford Avenue and Ratliffe Street in Norwalk (map) about 2:30 a.m. when he was struck by the bus, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department officials said.

A witness said he saw flashing neon lights inside the bus and heard music playing.

The 26-year-old victim was dragged more than 200 feet, officials said. He was hospitalized at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, where he was on life support.

Family members said Virgen is a father of two young daughters.

"He loves his girls, he loves life. He's my little brother," said Virgen's sister, Carmen Virgen.

The black bus was last seen turning westbound on Foster Road, officials said.

"I think from the evidence at the scene, it would be pretty obvious that the bus driver had to know something was going on," Det. Carl Anna said.

Anna said the bus may have swerved to avoid hitting Virgen.

"He probably saw him and just couldn't avoid him," Anna said.

A neighbor said cars often speed on the street where the crash took place.

"Accidents happen, but when you hit a person and you run, that's so inhumane. How can you leave somebody laying there?" said Virgen's sister, Carmen.

Sheriff's investigators were asking witnesses to come forward, including anyone who may have been on the bus at the time.

Anyone with information was asked to call the Norwalk Sheriff's Station at 562-863-8711.

Nuns Without Heat Fundraising Fix

Donations have poured in for a group of nuns who work and live in a West Side church that lost heat during this week's subzero temperatures.

More than $160,000 has been raised so far to help the nuns of the Fraternite Notre Dame order, which is located in the Austin neighborhood. During the record-breaking cold weather this week, both of the church's massive boilers stopped working, leaving the nuns without heat.

To cope with the cold, the nuns have been sleeping around electric space heaters.

A Go Fund Me page was set up for the nuns with an initial goal of raising $40,000 to pay for temporary equipment to heat the building until the spring. The page now shows more than $67,000 in donations.

A heating company temporarily fixed the problem for free, but the nuns could be left in the cold again without a more permanent fix.

A permanent solution for the building's heating problems is to buy new boilers and invest in proper insulation in the building, which is more than 100 years old. The total cost for this permanent fix is $200,000.

Two people are in jail after Sheriff's detectives teamed with the Fallbrook Crime Suppression Team to conduct early morning compliance checks.

The sweep was conducted at 2:30 a.m. in the Fallbrook area in search of known offenders and Assembly Bill 109 probationers, Sheriff's said.

One person was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and deputies said they found heroin in another residence, but the suspect wasn't home, so a warrant has been issued for her arrest.

After the home checks, the detectives and Crime Suppression Team members moved on to directed patrol in the area and made contact with 14 more people. Deputies said they conducted nine field interviews, where they arrested one person for driving under the influence and possession of marijuana.

Deputies also did bar checks at Ron's Redeye and Servano's bars, but no one was in violation at either of those locations.

Community Honors IB Man Who Found Dead Infant

The Imperial Beach community honored the homeless man who found missing Long Beach newborn Eliza Delacruz.

Dozens of businesses and community members came out to show their thanks and support for Harold Sherman, who found the infant dead in a dumpster along his canning route behind the Silver Strand Shopping Center on Palm Avenue in December.

Sherman, who has spent much of his life on the streets battling a drug addiction and mental illness, is a hero to some, but those who know him say it's just the kind of thing Sherman does.

"Everyone sees him as a canner or maybe a homeless, but you know inside his heart, he is like an angel," said one of the supporters out at Veteran's park Saturday.

Sherman said when he came across Eliza's body, he just couldn't standby. He said the dumpster he found her in was no place for a baby.

"How could someone do that? How could anyone do something like that?" Sherman said. "That baby didn't do anything to deserve any of that or to be where she was."

He still cannot believe the person responsible is still at large.

"I hope for justice for her," he said.

While the investigation into baby Eliza's tragic death continues, supporters at Veteran's Park were focused on the good that came from it all.

Part of the proceeds raised from sales during Saturday's event will directly to Sherman and his wife to pay for medical bills and living costs.

Sherman said he is impressed by the love he's received from his community, but says he's no hero.

"All I did was something we all should be doing - the right thing."

11 Wesleyan Students Hospitalized

Eleven Wesleyan University students in Middletown, Connecticut, have been hospitalized Sunday due to possible overdoses from a drug commonly known as Molly (MDMA) on Saturday night, according to a letter from the administration.

As of 7p.m. Sunday, two students were in critical condition and two more in serious condition at Hartford Hospital.

A Wesleyan sophomore is in critical condition at Middlesex Hospital, where she was taken early Sunday morning due to an "apparent overdose," Dean Michael Whaley, vice president of student affairs, wrote to the school community Sunday in an e-mail sent just after 11 a.m.

In a later statement, a spokeswoman for the school confirmed that seven students were transported and another four walked into the hospital for treatment.

"Initial indication in all of these cases is that the students took Molly (MDMA) last night," Whaley wrote in the letter on Sunday afternoon. "Some of the students are in serious/critical condition."

MDMA stands for methylenedioxy-methamphetamine, which the National Institute on Drug Abuse says is "known as ecstasy or, more recently, as Molly," describing it as "a synthetic psychoactive drug that has similarities to both the stimulant amphetamine and the hallucinogen mescaline."

Whaley wrote to the students that university public safety and residential life officials "are conducting well-being checks in some areas" and that public safety authorities and Middletown police are investigating.

He asked the students to check on their friends to make sure they're okay and to contact the director of public safety at 860-685-3333 if they have any information.

"Finally, I ask that you keep these students in your thoughts and share my hope that they will fully recover," Whaley wrote to the students. "I will provide an update when there is more information that I can share with you. Many thanks for your help."

The university notified the parents of the students.

Molly has gained popularity in the last decade and has become an increasingly common concern for concert promoters, campus police and local officials.

A third day of Electric Zoo festival in New York City was cancelled in 2013 after two young people died and four were hospitalized because of Molly overdose. Their deaths came after a string of similar overdoses that year at dance concerts in Boston, Seattle, Miami and Washington, D.C.

Mayor, Spanos Meet About LA Stadium Plan

Mayor Kevin Faulconer confirmed Sunday that he and San Diego Chargers owner Dean Spanos met face-to-face for the first time since the city learned of the team's plans to share a stadium with the Oakland Raiders in Los Angeles County.

Faulconer would not reveal details about what was discussed but described the meeting as "productive."

In a written statement, the Chargers said Spanos outlined the reasoning behind the team's decision to pursue a joint stadium with the Raiders as an option if negotiations failed with the City of San Diego.

The statement also revealed that the city's stadium advisory panel had decided to "accelerate their work" and make a report available in the next three months.

The meeting is the first since Mayor Faulconer accused the Chargers ownership of dragging its feet with negotiations while at the same time working on the joint stadium in Carson.

An obviously frustrated Faulconer said Friday, "That’s not being upfront. That’s not how you do business.”

The Chargers said they pledge to work cooperatively with the Task Force in moving forward on a stadium agreement that works for everyone.

Stay Safe on Icy Sidewalks: Walk Like a Penguin

$

The trick to balancing on slick sidewalks is to “walk like a penguin."

At least, that’s the advice coming out of Little Baby’s Ice Cream in Northern Liberties.

Instinct tells us to do the opposite and center our weight mid-stride, which works on dry walkways.

However this tactic forces legs to split your body weight in half and rely on both feet to maintain balance -- not the best idea for icy streets.

The local ice cream parlor posted a simple infographic on their blog to remind everyone to think of gravity and mimic penguins. Shifting one’s weight onto the front leg keeps people – and penguins – from slipping.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention backs up the penguin waddle claim, reminding people to also spread feet slightly to fortify the center of gravity.

With sidewalks freezing over, remember to stay smart and give yourself extra time to waddle to and fro.

One more tip, keep your hands out of your pockets and wear a puffy coat…so if you do fall, at least you can catch yourself and cushion your buns.

Two Small Brush Fires Break Out in Oceanside Canyon

Oceanside fire fighters along with the help of fire crews from Vista, North County, Camp Pendleton and San Marcos Fire Departments combated two small brush fires in the Lawrence Canyon area Sunday afternoon.

The call came in just before 12:30 p.m. Sunday and fire officials said one truck was dispatched for a smoke check at Loretta Street and Highway 76.

When fire crews arrived, they found two vegetation fires burning in the canyon side about 500 feet apart, one of which was headed toward the homes above on Loretta Street, officials said.

Fire crews extinguished the one closest to the homes first, then the second. Officials said they both threatened the area due to thick vegetation and rugged terrain.

The fires burned three-quarters of an acre and were put out in less than an hour, according to fire officials.

There were no injuries reported, but several homeless camps were found in the area and were being referred to the city's Code Enforcement Division.

The cause of the fires is under investigation and a fire investigator was requested because of the unusual circumstances.

Anyone with information can contact the Oceanside Fire Department at (769) 435-4272.

Ten-year-old Sophia Contos was selling Girl Scout Cookies with her troop in front of a San Jose, California grocery store--but a man yanked a cash box right out of her hands.

The Girls Scouts were selling cookies outside a Branham Lane Safeway Sunday afternoon, trying to raise money for a water conservation service project. But then, Contos said a man approached her table and tried to steal the cash box with $600 inside.

"He's looking around, looking at the cookies, and I keep my hands on the box," Contos said. "And (he starts) to pull away and all of a sudden he goes for it. I jerk it away, but then he's like too strong, so he gets it."

The suspected thief ran off, but came back to the parking lot 10 minutes later. That is where witnesses spotted him and got his license plate number as he took off.

Police were able to quickly pull him over and arrest him for strong arm robbery. They found $300 on him, and he told police he tossed the cash box in a nearby creek. A K-9 officer found it.

The girls got their money back, and on top of that, police bought $240 worth of cookies and gave the troop $60 cash.

Sophia's mother said it was a scary experience for her daughter, but witnesses at the store, along with police, really sprang into action to help--and she is hoping that is what her daughter will remember most.

The Birds Are Back In Town

Apart from a few short breaks, San Diego has been home to a professional (or at least semi-pro) hockey team since 1966. The majority of those years, the team was known as the Gulls, so the name means something in our town.

On Sunday afternoon at the Valley View Casino Center, we saw just how much it means when 8,500 people showed up to celebrate the return of hockey to San Diego.

The Anaheim Ducks held an ice breaking to welcome their new American Hockey League team to San Diego, and it was a no-brainer to call the team the Gulls. Even the logo is familiar, with a few minor tweaks, which were explained in a statement from the Ducks like this:

“The new logo pays homage to the legacy of the WCHL Gulls logo and features the Ducks color palette and other design elements, including the Ducks trademark windswept font. A touch of the signature Gulls blue was added to the Ducks color palette to embrace the hockey history and tradition of the community. The clubs new colors are orange, black, and blue.”

Ducks owners Henry and Susan Samueli made the drive down for the event and almost didn’t make it in time due to traffic, but did not seem to mind because it confirmed to them what a good idea it was to move its top developmental team down the road to San Diego.

The Gulls first game back will be this October.
