Police Beef Up Patrol After Park Bathroom Assaults

Police in the South Bay have ramped up patrols after a man sexually assaulted two boys this week at park restrooms.

A young boy was forced into a men’s restroom stall and sexually assaulted at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach around 2 p.m. Friday, Manhattan Beach Police said.

"You wouldn't think it would happen in daylight. At this time of day," park visitor Kevin Lu said. Lu himself has a son who is around the same age as the victim.

The recent incident has caused residents to be concerned.

"It should be a safe place for the kids to go to bathroom," Manhattan Beach resident Christine Garcia said.

The suspect has been described as a white male with grey hair, a medium build, in his 40s, wearing a white shirt and dark-colored pants at the time of the assault.

Just two days prior, another sexual assault was reported at a park in nearby Hermosa Beach.

A 13-year-old boy was sexually assaulted around the restroom at Valley Park on Wednesday around 8 p.m., Hermosa Beach Police said.

"The victim was confronted and physically taken to the ground by the suspect, where the suspect ultimately sexually assaulted the victim," Hermosa Beach Police Sgt. Robert Higgins said.

The suspect was described as a white male, in his 30’s and approximately 6 feet tall.

Because of the suspect description, location and sexual violence toward children, police in both Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach believe the crimes were committed by the same person.

"Our investigators are on it and we’re going to bring this guy to justice," Higgins said.

Thousands Attend Golden Gate Park 4/20 Celebration

Thousands of people filled up Golden Gate Park Sunday to celebrate what is still an illegal recreational substance in California: marijuana.

April 20, or 4/20, has become kind of a de facto holiday in the United States, and this year, it falls on Easter Sunday.

San Francisco police said a year ago there were fights, traffic jams, and drug-dealing, so this year, officers will be on-hand to make sure everyone is safe.

"Behind you, you can see not more than one, two, three, four, five, six, seven police cars," said a man attending the celebration, who chose to remain anonymous. "So, I believe there's a heightened police presence, yes."

"Good for safety, but bad when it comes to police harassment," he added. "I mean, it's just people sitting here celebrating something that we all believe in, that we all have faith in."

The cost to clean up last year's event was about $15,000.

Violent Crime Falls Across SD County

0
0

Violent crimes were on the decline last year across San Diego County, including a big drop in homicides, according to new statistics from the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG).

After an uptick in 2012, the county saw a 5 percent decrease of violent crimes – which are considered homicides, rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults.

The 2013 rate was 3.66 per 1,000 residents, the second lowest rate in the past 30 years. That means 11,515 violent crimes were reported to local law enforcement.

“What we are seeing in the San Diego region is consistent with what other large cities are seeing throughout the United States – crime rates that remain at record lows,” said SANDAG Criminal Justice Research Director Dr. Cynthia Burke.

The SANDAG report shows that homicides had the biggest one-year decrease: 33 percent down. The county had 72 homicides last year, compared to 107 in 2012.

Fewer of those 2013 killings were gang-motivated, but more were tied to an argument. Child abuse-related deaths dropped from 13 in 2012 to 2 in 2013.

Robberies across the region fell 4 percent, but bank robberies specifically rose 22 percent, increasing from 79 in 2012 to 96 last year.

According to Burke, AB 109 – California’s prison realignment law – does not appear to have caused an increase in violent crimes. The law mandates that newly sentenced, non-violent, “low-level” felons serve time in county jails to reduce the population of state prisons.

However, Burke said AB 109 may play a factor in the slight increase of property crimes in the San Diego area. They were up less than 1 percent over the past year, with larcenies accounting for the increase.

A televised stunt on Mount Everest that was supposed to have aired on the Discovery Channel next month has been canceled, days after an avalanche on the world's highest peak claimed the lives of at least 13 Sherpa guides.

Veteran climber Joby Ogwyn, a wing-suit flier and BASE jumper, had been planning to attempt the first wing-suit jump off the summit on May 11, a feat set to be aired live, NBC News reported. He said Saturday he had lost his Sherpa team in the Friday tragedy.

"In light of the overwhelming tragedy at Mt. Everest and respect for the families of the fallen, Discovery Channel will not be going forward with Everest Jump Live. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the whole Sherpa community," Discovery spokeswoman Laurie Goldberg said.

The avalanche that swept down the mountain's upper slope Friday was the deadliest disaster ever recorded on Everest.

Nurse Stabbed at L.A. Hospital

A nurse was in critical condition after allegedly being stabbed by a man who bypassed a hospital’s weapons screening area in Sylmar early Sunday.

Authorities said 26-year-old Romero Carnailla ran into the Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, located in the 14400 block of Olive View Drive around 2 a.m., according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Security and law enforcement officers were searching the hospital for the man until they heard a woman screaming. They found her a short time later suffering from stab wounds to her upper and lower torso, officials said.

She was taken to a trauma center in critical condition.

Authorities took Carnailla into custody. A knife was found at the hospital, deputies said.

Officials said it appears the attacker did not know the victim.

Carnailla faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon and battery, sheriff's officials said. He was being held on $55,000 bail.

County Services Bureau, a law enforcement operation that presides over nearly 200 Los Angeles County facilities, was handling the investigation.

The incident marked the first of two stabbing attacks on an on-duty nurse in Southern California on the same day.

Later Sunday morning, another nurse was stabbed by a man at a Torrance hospital. She suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are still investigating the incident. It's unclear what caused the crash or if the driver will face any charges.

Historic Athlete, Publisher William "Bill" Blair Dies

0

William "Bill" Blair, a man who made history and later helped record North Texas history as a newspaper publisher passed away Sunday, according to family members. Blair was 92.

Blair was the publisher of The Elite News newspaper, which focused coverage of the black community for decades. The newspaper was the primary sponsor of the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day parade, one of the largest events in the nation honoring the slain civil rights leader.

Blair's family told NBC 5 that he will be laid to rest on Friday, April 25, but further details are pending.

Blair was born in Dallas on Oct. 17, 1921. He attended Booker T. Washington High School and Prairie View A&M University.  He enlisted in the United States Army and became the youngest black first sergeant during World War II.  Between 1946-1951, Blair pitched for the Indianapolis Clowns and other Negro League baseball teams.

In 1947, Blair founded the Highlight News. That was followed by the Southwest Sports News, which published scores from black college games. In 1960, the newspaper was renamed The Elite News.

In 2010, NBC 5 profiled The Elite News for a story. In an interview with NBC 5's Kristi Nelson, Blair's son Jordan said, "our niche is the church community and doing things within our community, covering our stories that people normally don't cover."

William Blair later lost his son Jordan in February 2012 to cancer.

In June 2012, Blair donated his collection of newspaper materials and Negro League memorabilia to the University of Texas at Arlington.

In addition to being a publisher and athlete, Blair fought for civil rights and helped recognize church leaders with the Religious Hall of Fame that began in 2004.

The City of Dallas renamed Rochester Park William "Bill" Blair Jr. Park in 2011.

Blair’s son, Darryl Blair, has been handed the legacy of the family’s print business.

“My dad — his challenge was to us, once a task has begun, never stop until it’s done,” he said, adding that his father’s vision for the paper was to “promote people” and “the good of our community”.

Blair said his father’s message to his children, as well as the politicians and community leaders he supported in its pages, was simple: “Do what you can do.”

“His failure was that he didn’t know how to say no even in light of insurmountable opposition and obstacles. He would try to overcome. He just believed in what he could do.”

A memorial service for Blair will be held Friday at Concord Baptist Church at 6808 Pastor Bailey Drive in Dallas. The service is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.

0

More than 30,000 people from across the U.S. rolled eggs, did yoga and learned healthy eating habits as they participated in the 136th annual White House Easter Egg Roll.

First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! initiative inspired this year's event, and the "Hop into Healthy, Swing into Shape" theme was apparent in most of the events, including an "Eggtivity Zone Obstacle Course," Yoga Garden, basketball and tennis on the presidential courts, and Hop to It! -- an instructional dance party.

Twelve-year-old singer Cam Anthony performed the National Anthem before the president and first lady spoke briefly to the crowd.

"Just enjoy. All you have to do from this point is have fun," Michelle Obama said to the White House guests and event volunteers.

President Obama quickly moved on to preside over an egg roll race as children -- some of the tiniest assisted by parents -- used spoons to roll eggs from one side of the course to the other. The Easter Bunny also looked on.

Singers Ariana Grande and Candice Glover and DJ Beauty & the Beatz are set to take the Rock 'n' Egg Roll stage Monday. Other special guests will include former Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan, former NBA start Adrian Dantley, Olympic fencer Maria Cruz Garcia and sports journalist Bonnie Bernstein.

Tickets were distributed via an online lottery back in March.

Guests were in for "egg-cellent" weather; sunny skies and temperatures nearing 70 degrees are on tap for Monday.

The event ends at 6:45 p.m. Monday; guests move through in waves according to their timed tickets.

The Easter Egg Roll is held annually the Monday after Easter on the south lawn of the White House. The tradition of rolling colored eggs down the White House lawn was started by President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1878.

A Brooklyn 15-year-old was shot in the foot after cutting a line of customers waiting to buy a pair of coveted $250 sneakers Saturday morning, police say.

The boy was shot outside a Foot Locker on Knickerbocker Avenue in Bushwick about 6 a.m. as he and other customers waited outside the store for the chance to buy a pair of Nike Foamposite Pro Premium "Yeezy" shoes, named for Kanye West, police say.

After the boy cut in line, one of the customers left and returned with a handgun, police say. The shooter fired the gun four times, with one of the bullets hitting the 15-year-old in the foot.

The boy was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive, according to the NYPD. The shooter has not been arrested.

Earlier this month, there was nearly a riot after hundreds of people lined up outside a Soho sneaker store for the debut of a different model of Nike Foamposite sneakers, according to the New York Post. The store canceled the sale after customers got unruly.

New Tip Re-Energizes Search for San Diego Man

The search for a San Diego man who went missing in San Francisco last year was re-energized this weekend after a possible sighting last week, a search organizer said Sunday morning.

Crishtian Hughes, 21, was last seen on Feb. 7, 2013, in the 900 block of Capitol Avenue in San Francisco.

His mother, Kim Ne Pote of San Diego, told NBC 7 that her son was staying the night at a friend’s house in San Francisco, but was gone the next morning. Ne Pote hasn’t heard from her son since.

On Thursday, a woman said she saw Hughes on Haight Street in San Francisco, according to Rachel Jackson, founder of PPP Recovery, an organization that is helping the Hughes family with search efforts.

Other tips have since come in prompting search efforts in that area of the city, she said.

A search was held Saturday at 4 p.m., and another search effort was scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday.

The search group met at the McDonald's restaurant at 730 Stanyan St., and volunteers were advised to bring a buddy while searching.

If Hughes is spotted, search organizers advise keeping him in sight, but to not approach him. Rather tips should come in to 911 or 910-627-3244.

Jackson said Hughes is believed to be with a female with blonde hair and he has visible tattoos on his arms.

He is believed to go by his street name "Chris" and have grown his curly hair long, Jackson said. He is described as 5-foot-8 and 130 pounds with brown hair, brown eyes and a slender build.

Hughes' mother is concerned about his mental health, Jackson added.

The Haight-Ashbury area is expected to be bustling Sunday for Easter and 4/20 celebrations, which Jackson said is not a hindrance but presents more opportunities to find Hughes.

More information about the search is available online on a Facebook page dedicated to finding Hughes.

Chargers Stadium Measure Could Get on 2016 Ballot

Continuing negotiations over a new San Diego Chargers stadium may land the issue on the county ballot in 2016.

The football team’s administration has renewed talks with San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s staff, according to Chargers special counsel Mark Fabiani.

He said the November 2016 presidential election would be the earliest chance to allow county residents to vote on a stadium proposal. The project’s final price tag could top $1 billion.

A new home for the Chargers has been a team priority since 2002, but turmoil at City Hall, namely the resignation of former Mayor Bob Filner, has halted progress on talks.

Now that a new mayor is installed, leaders will be weighing possible locations and gathering funding for the potential project.

The football rumor mill has churned out speculative sites, including the East Village, Sports Arena area and Mission Valley.

The lure of hosting future Super Bowls – and reaping the tourism dollars from them – adds extra incentive to see the plan through.

Caught on Cam: Small Plane Makes Emergency, Wheels-Free Landing

Three people riding a small plane suffered some frightening moments mid-air when their landing gear became stuck.

The Cessna 210 was flying around San Diego's North County Sunday afternoon when the pilot tried to lower the gear. But the wheels wouldn't budge.

Student pilot Max Fitzmaurice was flying at the same time, and he heard the pilot's frantic call into the tower.

According to Fitzmaurice, the distressed plane made a couple fly-bys around the Oceanside airport, hoping the gear would deploy. When it didn't, air traffic controllers gave the pilot the option to land at Montgomery Regional Airport, where there is a larger emergency response.

Instead, he opted to land closer to home: at the McClellan-Palomar Airport in Carlsbad.

Fitzmaurice landed his plane just minutes before the Cessna started to descend, and the student had his smart phone camera rolling as the pilot went in for a no-wheels, emergency landing.

After a couple of hard bumps and some major skidding, the small aircraft came to a halt around 3 p.m.-- with no injuries to the pilot or two others on board.

"The guy did a great job landing. I mean, spectacular," said Fitzmaurice.

"You really have to keep calm, focus on your priorities and get your plane on the ground -- get your plane on the ground safely," he added.

He said the pilot definitely knew what he was doing.

The airport was forced to close for at least two hours while the plane was towed from the runway.

According to Fitzmaurice, fire crews responded quickly and arrived before the nail-biting landing, just in case anything went wrong.

San Diego Teen Carjacks 3 Kids, Puppy

A father's stop at his wife's work turned into a harrowing experience Sunday, when authorities say a teen carjacked the vehicle with his three kids and puppy inside.

The gray 2005 Dodge Magnum was reported stolen around 5:30 p.m. from 47th Street and Market Street in the Chollas View area.

A 7 year-old girl, 3 year-old boy, and 18 month-old girl were inside the car that had been left with the keys in the ignition. The family's puppy was also inside the car.

San Diego police Lt. Steve Shaw said the father heard what sounded like his car driving off.

"He went outside and his vehicle was gone," Shaw said.

Approximately 30 minutes later California Highway Patrol Officer Derek Meissen spotted the car on State Route 125 at Jamacha.

The suspect led officers on a pursuit up SR-125 and over to State Route 94. The car took the College Avenue exit before hitting a curb and crashing on Acorn Street.

Officers took the teenage suspect into custody.

Meissen said the children witnessed the entire arrest.

"They were very scared. The little girl came out. She was freaking out while we were trying to take custody of the driver so we had to get her out of the way but she was very scared," he said.

San Diego police took the suspect to Juvenile Hall on charges of auto theft, robbery and kidnapping.

Police initially told NBC 7 that the dad stopped at the mom’s work and thought he had locked the car when he went to talk to her.

They later said the father had left the keys in the car, giving the suspect an opportunity to hop in and make a getaway.

The carjacking appears to be random.

Officials were preparing to issue an Amber Alert, but a CHP officer spotted the car a half hour after it was reported stolen.

Meb Keflezighi Wins Boston Marathon

San Diego's Meb Keflezighi won the Boston Marathon Monday with the second fastest time for an American man in the history of the event.

Keflezighi set a personal record, crossing the finish line with one fist pumping in the air with a time of 2:08:37.

That's 30 seconds faster than his previous personal best of 2:09:08 in Houston two years ago at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

“Coming as an American, to be able turn that left turn and to get that crowd going. I made sure to look up,” he said referring to the section of the course involved in last year's deadly bombing.

“This is beyond running. This is for the people. This is for Boston Strong,” he said at the finish line.

In November, he competed in the NYC Marathon and finished 23rd with a time of 2:23:47. He finished fourth in the 2012 London Summer Olympics.

Born in Eritrea, Keflezighi became a U.S. citizen in 1998 after his family fled war to establish a new home in San Diego in 1987.

The San Diego High School and UCLA alum has won four NCAA titles, the New York City marathon, and an Olympic silver medal in 2004.

After his NYC Marathon win in 2009, he talked with NBC 7 about growing up in San Diego and recalled the day his seventh grade teacher at Roosevelt Junior High gave him an offer he couldn’t refuse.

“He just said ‘You run hard, you do the best that you can, you’re going to get an A or B. You goof around, you mess around, and you’re going to get D or F. I just took off like a bolt,” Meb said.

In 2007, he suffered a hip fracture that tested his resolve to compete. Former coach Eduardo Ramos said that many people had written Keflezighi off because of the injury.

At the same Olympic Trials, his close friend Ryan Shay collapsed and died.

He admits he almost hung up his hat that year and discussed it with his wife. "But we prayed hard and worked hard and I said, ‘God, show me the light,” he explained.

Long days of rehab followed, and he didn't feel 100 percent until nearly two years later.

Then, in 2009, he finished first in the New York City Marathon - the first American to do so in 27 years.

Marathon officials say an American has not won in Boston since Greg A. Meyer claimed the wreath in 2:09:00 in 1983.

Keflezighi, who will turn 39 in two weeks, now lives and trains in Mammoth Lakes, Calif. because of the high altitude.

Last year, Keflezighi was in the area of the Boston Marathon finish line just minutes before the explosion and credited God with keeping him safe.

He was in the grand stand for four hours cheering racers on and left five minutes before the explosion happened.

“I visualize the race every day since that happened,” he said after Monday's race. “It’s just beyond words to be able to do that. I’m blessed.”

As for the possiblity of returning next year, Keflezighi laughed and said he was more than 100 percent fulfilled with this win.

"This solidified my career," he said.

Charges in Prep School Drug Ring

0
0

Two prep school graduates who prosecutors say had their sights set on running the drug trade on suburban Philadelphia's Main Line have been arrested along with so-called "sub-dealers" for allegedly selling illicit substances in high schools and colleges.

Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman announced on Monday the arrests of Neil Scott and Timothy Brooks and detailed their alleged operation called the "Main Line Take Over Project."

Scott, 25, and Brooks, 18, employed "sub-dealers" at five Main Line high schools and three area colleges who would sell marijuana, hash oil, cocaine and MDMA, a drug commonly known as Ecstasy, Ferman said. Authorities confiscated drugs, cash and guns in a sweep related to the operation, which officials said had been running for the past couple of months, officials said.

“This was not a game. These people were in business, they were in business to make money and they were going to do whatever they needed to do so that no one threatened their business," Ferman said.

The schools involved were the private Haverford School and public high schools Lower Merion High School and Harriton High School in Lower Merion Township, Pa., Conestoga High School in Tredyffrin Twp., Pa., Radnor High School in Radnor, Pa., as well as Gettysburg, Lafayette and Haverford colleges.

Ferman said both men, who are graduates of the prestigious all-boys preparatory school The Haverford School, worked together to "create a [drug] monopoly to high school students in the area." Both men played lacrosse at the swanky Montgomery County private school and coached youth sports leagues, according to Ferman. The DA said Brooks and Scott exploited those relationships to help grow the criminal enterprise.

According to a 100-page criminal complaint obtained by NBC10.com, Scott received bulk shipments of marijuana from California to his apartment in Haverford, Pa. Drugs would also be sent to his parent's home in Paoli and Brooks' home in Villanova, according to the complaint.

Authorities said Scott worked, at one time, at a legal marijuana dispensary in California and used those connections to garner his supply.

Through text messages obtained during the investigation, prosecutors said they learned Scott and Brooks ran the ring like a legitimate business. Scott allegedly coached Brooks, who would in turn supervise the "sub-dealers" inside the high schools.

“The high school sub-dealers were encouraged to develop their business so that they could sell at least one pound of marijuana each week,” Ferman said. "Brooks instructed the dealers to make sure that there was never a drought."

John Nagl, headmaster for The Haverford School, said school officials were notified about an on-going investigation several weeks ago, but were asked not to interfere.

"We focus on developing boys with good character, despite our best efforts, sometimes boys make bad choices," he said. "This was destructive and horrible. And we are deeply saddened."

Nagle said the school, which teaches 1,000 boys in a lower, middle and upper school, does not comment on current or former students. He said he did not know how many students may have purchased drugs through the ring.

“The school is cooperating with the law enforcement investigation," he said.

Spokespersons for the Lower Merion, Radnor and Tredyffrin/Easttown school districts said officials have been made aware of the allegations and that the safety of students is most important. All said they were unaware of the investigation, but will cooperate if asked.

Gettysburg College is conducting an internal investigation, a spokesman for that college said.

NBC10.com also reached out to the other schools involved in the case, but so far we have not heard back.

Ferman said investigators learned about the "Main Line Take Over Project" through confidential informants and conducted a one-day round-up in February. In that operation, prosecutors said they confiscated 8 lbs. of marijuana, 3 grams of hash oil, 23 grams of cocaine, 11 grams of Ecstasy, $11,000 in cash, a loaded handgun, an AR-15 assault rifle and AR-15 style rifle. Most of the contraband came from Scott's Haverford apartment, authorities said.

In addition to Scott and Brooks, seven alleged "sub-dealers" were also charged. They are: Daniel McGrath, 18, a student at The Haverford School; John Rosemann, 20, a student at Lafayette College; Christian Euler, 23, a graduate of The Haverford School and student at Lafayette College; Garrett Johnson, 18, a student at Haverford College; Reid Cohen, 18, a Haverford College student; Willow Orr, 22; Domenic Curcio, 29.

Two juveniles, a 17-year-old Radnor High School student and 17-year-old Lower Merion High School student, have also been petitioned by the DA's office.

Scott, who is being held on $1 million bail, covered his face and shouted expletives at reporters attempting to get comment following his arraignment on Monday afternoon. His attorney declined comment saying he had just gotten the case.

Brook's attorney said the teen "lost his way" and is remorseful. His parents posted the $25,000 bail to release him from jail.

Authorities say a rock climber at Yosemite National Park had to be rescued by helicopter after falling 30 feet and suffering major injuries.

The 26-year-old man from Palo Alto, Calif., fell before noon on Sunday while climbing with a partner on the park's Cathedral range. The California Highway Patrol says park officials asked the CHP to fly a pair of Yosemite Search and Rescue specialists to the injured man.

The helicopter took him to the park's floor at El Capitan Meadow. Another helicopter waiting there then took him to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.

Officer Johnny Fisher of the California Highway Patrol says this was the second helicopter rescue in Yosemite within two weeks.
