Steve Martin’s Musical to Premiere at Old Globe

Comedy legend Steve Martin will hold the world premiere of his stage musical at San Diego’s Old Globe Theater. And no, it's not a musical version of "The Three Amigos."

“Bright Eyes” will hit the stage on Sept. 13 this year.

Based on an original story by Martin and his tour partner Edie Brickell, the play is set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina between 1922 and 1945.

According to a casting call, the plot centers on a young man who returns from World War II and uncovers hidden yearnings, as well as dark secrets about his past.

It will feature bluegrass songs from Brickell and Martin’s Grammy winning album “Love Has Come for You.”

The “Father of the Bride” star -- also a banjo-aficionado --  penned the musical’s book, Brickell wrote the lyrics, and together they composed the music, the Globe said.

The bluegrass duo have worked in harmony for some time, going on tour with Martin’s band the Steep Canyon Rangers since 2013.

Tony Award winner Walter Bobbie will take the helm of the production, making his Globe debut as the director.

For years, the Globe’s stage has acted as launching platform for future Broadway hits. Plays such as “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” “The Full Monty” and “Damn Yankees” were developed there before taking the stage in New York and in theaters across the country.

Tickets for the 2014-2015 Globe season are currently only available by subscription, and those prices range from $99 to $615.

D.C.'s Snowy Owl Gets New Home

A rare snowy owl whose plight drew national attention after it was apparently hit by a bus in the nation's capital has been released to the wild.

The injured owl was found in downtown Washington in late January and taken to the National Zoo before being transferred to a Washington, D.C., wildlife rehabilitation center. It underwent rehabilitation at The Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota, which has expertise in replacing damaged feathers.

The owl was released on Saturday into an area where a significant number of snowy owls have been observed over the past few winters.

"The snowy flew off with strong steady wingbeats, showing off the new flight feathers supplied by The Raptor Center,” said executive director Julia Ponder. “He is in great condition and will hopefully head back north in the coming days," said Ponder.

Snowy owls are native to the Arctic, but were seen all along the East Coast this winter as far south as Florida.

3-Car Crash Kills La Mesa Man

A 71-year-old man died in a three-car collision in La Mesa Friday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officials said around 10:45 p.m., La Mesa resident Michael James Bliss, 71, was driving his 1989 Mercedes eastbound on Interstate 8 near 70th Street.

Bliss drifted into the center divider and hit the concrete wall to his left, which caused him to stop right in the middle of the first lane of traffic.

A 20-year-old El Cajon man driving a 2005 Pontiac Vibe wasn't able to swerve out of the way in time, so he hit the right side of the Mercedes.

Soon after, a 24-year-old Santee man in a 2004 Honda Accord struck both the cars, which were blocking two lanes of traffic.

The Accord and Vibe drivers were not injured. However, Bliss was pronounced dead at the scene, the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office said.

The CHP said he apparently was not wearing a seatbelt.

It does not appear that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

Restaurant Charges Thousands

When Austin Dillon checked his bank statement online Friday morning and found thousands of dollars missing from his account, he thought for a moment that he might be a victim of identity theft.

It only took a couple of scrolls for the 33-year-old Oxnard, Calif., man to realize where the missing money went: His trip to a Santa Paula Del Taco fast food restaurant cost him $4,260.

“On my actual receipt it said $4.26,” Dillon said. “I thought it was funny. I figured it would be an easy fix.”

A quick call to his bank and Dillon’s money was back in his account, but he soon found out that other affected customers weren’t so lucky. About 10 customers gathered at the restaurant Friday morning with complaints of being overcharged, and some had gone into negative balances after a technical error affecting ATM and credit card transactions tacked on thousands of dollars to bills.

“I had the money in my account,” Dillon said. “If it had been before Christmas it might have knocked me out of the water.”

About 150 people who ordered from the food chain were mistakenly charged, but a spokesman with Del Taco said all charges will be refunded.

"They were really cool about it," Dillon said. "They were super apologetic."

A woman is injured after a paraglider crashes at Black's Beach, just north of La Jolla.

According to the San Diego Police, the glider crashed about 30 feet down the cliff near the Torrey Pines Glider Port Saturday around 3:30 p.m..

The woman in her 30s--who was the only person on board -- caught some currents in the air and came down for a hard landing from about 10 to 15 feet in the air.

She was conscious and breathing when help reached her, police said. However, she suffered a leg injury, so she wasn't able to talk on her own.

Emergency crews treated her on the bluffs, put her on a medic stretcher and hoisted her up. Police said she is an intermediate para-glider.

Convicted Killer's Son Remains Conflicted

The son of an Iraqi immigrant convicted of killing his wife said he remains conflicted on the high-profile case that ended in San Diego earlier this week with a guilty verdict, adding that he still loves his father.

“It’s not that I disagree with what the decision was, it’s just I hate what the decision was itself. I hate the verdict,” Mohammed Al-Himidi told NBC 7 Friday in an exclusive interview.

Mohammed is the oldest son of Kassim Al-Himidi, 49. On Thursday, Al-Himidi was found guilty of the 2012 murder of his wife, Shaima Alawadi, 32.

The verdict sparked several outbursts in the courtroom, including Mohammed screaming, “This is bullsh**! This is f***ing bullsh**! My dad is innocent. He was tried unfairly.”

Mohammed said his post-verdict outburst was a mix of every emotion he’s ever had about the case involving his parents, finally reaching a boiling point.

“I had an emotional breakdown, really,” he told NBC 7. “A million thoughts were going through my head. Basically, the judge [had] just said, ‘Your dad is going to be locked up for life.’ My dad has been there throughout my whole life.”

On Mar. 21, 2012, Mohammed’s mother was brutally beaten in a bloody attack at their family’s home in El Cajon. She suffered critical brain injuries and died three days later. At the time, Mohammed was only 15 years old.

At first, the case was investigated as a hate crime due to a handwritten note found at the crime scene, which read: “This is my country, go back to yours, terrorist.”

Ultimately, El Cajon police determined it wasn’t a hate crime but rather a crime of domestic violence. Investigators arrested Al-Himidi in connection with the killing in November 2012.

Mohammed said he’s been conflicted with the case from the beginning. Now, with the guilty verdict, it’s even harder. He said he still feels like he’s stuck in the middle when it comes to what he believes.

“My dad, I personally thought, was innocent coming into the trial. I didn’t know what to believe, honestly. It’s the law versus your loyalty for your dad,” he explained. “It’s kind of like [being] in the middle. When I say I love my dad still, I’m just thinking, ‘Damn, I don’t know if my mom is going to be cool with that.’ It’s hard. It’s in the middle. I love my mom, but I also love my dad.”

While Mohammed said he loved his mother deeply, he worries that he’s now lost his father, too.

The teen said he still doesn’t know if he believes his dad is really guilty.

“I wasn’t actually there to see what happened. That’s between God and my mom. My mom was there – she knows who did it. Maybe my dad did it, maybe he didn’t,” he said. “Even [if] my dad did that, I still have love for him. It’s still my dad.”

Mohammed said the verdict is especially difficult to swallow because his father never had a history of violence in the family.

“My dad was never like that, never ever like that. My dad was never aggressive, never physical, never any of that stuff. I mean, it’s so confusing,” he said.

The teenager said he and his younger brother, Ali, have differing opinions when it comes to whether or not their father committed the crime. Still, those opinions won’t pit the brothers against one another.

“My brother and I are best friends. We’re really close. We don’t agree with each other, but that’s not going to ruin our brotherhood,” said Mohammed, adding that he respects the opinions of all of his siblings on this case, but stands by his own as well.

“I lost my parents, but I still have my siblings. I’ve trying to hold it together. There’s a lot going on,” he added.

Despite a verdict in place and Al-Himidi awaiting his sentencing on May 15, Mohammed said closure for the family still seems elusive at this point.

“Right now, to be honest with you, I don’t really feel a sense of closure. I just feel a sense of the family being even more separated,” he said.

Mohammed currently lives with relatives in Texas. He’s graduating from high school in May and said he plans to pursue a career in counseling, focusing on children and teens who have experienced this same type of trauma.

A 2-year-old boy was injured Saturday in San Diego’s Loma Portal area after the child’s mother accidentally ran over him while backing out of a driveway, officials confirmed.

According to the San Diego Police Department, the 37-year-old mother was driving her 2013 Toyota Prius just before noon in the 3600-block of Oleander Drive.

Unbeknownst to her, the toddler was in the driveway and as she backed up the vehicle, she accidentally rolled over the little boy’s leg.

The child sustained a fractured femur, officials said, and was transported to a local hospital. He's expected to make a full recovery.

The incident remains under investigation. Officials said alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

Last October, 5-year-old Bella Noble was killed in a tragic accident while her family visited a friend's house in Ramona. Bella and her siblings were playing in the driveway, sitting on the back bumper of her mother's van.

Unaware that the children were playing behind the vehicle, Bella’s mother backed the car up. As Bella jumped off the bumper, she was struck by the van – not once, but twice. The girl was airlifted to a hospital but died a shortly thereafter.

“I Can't Comprehend It”: Brother, Family Mourn Cab Driver

A San Diego community is in shock after learning that their father, brother and friend was killed in a wrong-way crash Saturday morning.

Anteneh T. Minassie, 42, was driving his cab on Interstate 5 near Washington Street when he was struck by a wrong-way driver. When he got out of his taxi, investigators say he was hit many times by oncoming traffic.

"I still haven't believed that it actually happened. I can't -- I can't comprehend it,” said Anteneh’s soft-spoken brother, Seyoum Minassie.

Mourners gathered at Anteneh’s Skyline home Saturday to support the wife and three children he leaves behind.

"I wish that day -- like, the day that the accident happened -- could be, like, erased from memory, erased from the calendar. I wish there could be, like, a different day,” said Seyoum.

Those around the home remembered Anteneh as a kind, loving man who never said a bad word or judgmental phrase.

The hard-working, dedicated man had been driving a cab for about four years, Seyoum said.

Among the mourners was Anteneh’s pastor, Melaku Mekuria of Maranatha Ethiopian Christian Fellowship.

“[He was] so very quiet and humble and peaceful. That's why his wife cannot even talk now. She's in shock," said Mekuria.

The pastor told NBC 7 that Anteneh had a heart for kids, working for the church in the children’s ministry.

And the children he loved most were his 8-year-old son and 6 and 4-year-old daughters.

"I wish that the person who [did] this really understands, like, the thing [she] has done to the family; how [she] brings tragedy to our lives, to the community, to the children," said Seyoum.

Seyoum added that their faith in God is helping the family get through this tragedy, and he hopes the person who caused the crash would think about God and ask him for forgiveness.

"[Anteneh] was just a healthy guy, peaceful, and he went to work and he couldn't come back home. So it's just unbelievable," said Mekuria.

The church will hold a memorial service for Anteneh, but a date has not been set.

A brother and sister, both 4 years old, died Sunday after a fire erupted in a Far Rockaway home, officials said.

The blaze began in the home on Bay 30th Street just before midnight. Investigators said they believe a child may have been playing with a lighter when the fire started.

After firefighters put out the blaze the siblings were rushed to a nearby hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival, police said.

Officials said the two siblings died of smoke inhalation. Authorities have identified the boy as Jai'Launi Tinglin and the girl as Ayini Tinglin. The two were half-siblings.

Another 4-year-old girl, Jai'Launi's twin, along with a 55-year-old aunt and their 63-year-old grandfather were also inside the home at the time. They were taken to area hospitals, where officials said they were listed in stable condition.

Father of Slain Boy Seeks Justice

The father of 5-year-old Jeremiah Oliver, whose body was found Friday off a Massachusetts highway, is seeking justice for his murder.

Jose Oliver, Jeremiah’s father, is sad, angry and demanding answers as to how his young son ended up wrapped in a blanket, stuffed in a suitcase on the side of the road.

“I want answers,” said Oliver, outside his New Britain, Conn., home just hours after receiving the news from the medical examiner. “It brings some kind of peace but not no closure because he’s dead. I didn’t get to enjoy him.”

The Worcester County District Attorney confirmed Saturday that the body found along Interstate 190 in Sterling, Mass., was that of the missing boy.

The active, happy-go-lucky kid lived with his mother, two siblings and his mother’s boyfriend. His father says it’s been two years since he last saw his children.

“He was always happy. He had that puppy dog look in his eyes and that smile. Just innocent. An innocent kid.”

Jeremiah was last seen by relatives in September but wasn't reported missing until December after his 7-year old sister told school counselors she hadn’t seen him in weeks. Authorities have said they feared he was dead.

Jeremiah's mother, Elsa Oliver, 28, pleaded not guilty in March to charges including kidnapping, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and reckless endangerment, according to The Associated Press. Her boyfriend, Alberto Sierra, 23, pleaded not guilty to similar charges.

The fallout from Jeremiah’s disappearance got three Massachusetts Department of Children and Families employees fired.

According to police, Jeremiah’s demeanor hid an allegedly tumultuous home life. The family was being monitored by state social workers for two years after allegations of abuse and neglect first surfaced in 2011.

An investigation following the disappearance found that the assigned social worker missed mandatory monthly visits for months leading up to the disappearance.

The grieving father places a lot of blame on the state.

“The three people from DCF that got fired? I don’t think that’s enough. I believe they should go to jail too for neglect on my son,” says Oliver, who refused to discuss the potential of any future lawsuit against the state.

Olga Roche, DCF Commissioner, released a statement saying they’re deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Jeremiah and their focus is now on his two remaining siblings.

However, with the shock still settling in, Jose is left to only wonder what could have been.

“I asked him once, ‘what do you wanna be when you grow up?’  He said, “I wanna be a police officer,” Oliver said, holding back tears.  “They took that away from him.”

Oliver says he’s heading to Fitchburg, Mass., on Sunday. No funeral arrangements have been made at this point.

Cab Driver Hit Several Times After Head-On Collision

A taxi cab driver was killed near Old Town San Diego early Saturday morning after being run over several times by oncoming traffic, just after a wrong-way driver plowed into his cab.

The deadly accident happened around 2:30 a.m. just north of the Washington Street exit on Interstate 5. According to California Highway Patrol officials, a driver was headed the wrong way on southbound I-5 and collided head-on with an oncoming West Coast Cab vehicle.

After the crash, investigators said the driver of the cab got out of his car. He was then fatally hit many times by oncoming traffic.

“Unfortunately, we don’t know how many times the taxi driver was struck by passing vehicles,” said CHP Sgt. Brad Denham.

West Coast Cab officials identified the deceased taxi driver as Anteneh T. Minassie.

At one point, a white Honda Accord rammed into the stalled taxi, sending the cab down an embankment, through a chain link fence and nose first into a small parking lot.

As this was happening, investigators said the driver at-fault made a U-turn in the middle of the freeway, exited Washington Street and took off. The suspected wrong-way driver then ditched the car in downtown San Diego, right along Front Street.

Officials confirmed the suspect vehicle was a rental car. They are still trying to determine whether the suspect legitimately rented the car or whether it was stolen or rented under a false identity.

The driver, a woman in her 40s, was arrested around 10:15 a.m. Saturday. Officials are investigating whether she was driving under the influence when she collided head-on with the taxi.

Following the deadly incident, CHP officials shut down all lanes of southbound I-5 for several hours as crews worked to clear the scene.

Meanwhile, officials said the driver of the Honda Accord also sustained some minor injuries and was treated at a nearby hospital.

A pastor from Minassie's church told NBC 7 that Minassie was also a youth minister. He said he will be greatly missed by many people.

The pastor said Minassie's friends and family are in shock over the incident.

On Saturday evening, Minassie's brother told NBC 7 he was deeply saddened by the loss of his beloved brother. He said he wishes he could erase the day, like it never happened.

Minassie's brother said the victim was 42 years old. He leaves behind three children, all under the age of 8. Minassie had been working as a cab driver for about four years, his brother said.

Six people were shot Sunday while attending an Easter gathering in a Chicago suburb.

Officials said a group of people were in a garage for an Easter party around 12:30 a.m. in the 1300 block of Jackson Street in far west suburban Montgomery when someone started shooting.

Four men and two women were shot. Five people were transported from the scene and one person was taken to an area hospital by a friend, according to Montgomery Police Chief Daniel Meyers.

It was not immediately clear what their conditions were.

Children were in the home at the time of the shooting, but no children were injured, according to authorities.

Meyers said the residents of the home had not had prior incidents involving shootings or gangs, but noted police plan to look into any activity at the home over the last few weeks.

“This area is pretty quiet,” he said.

Police are searching for a male suspect, Meyers said.

“We’ll continue this [investigation] for days until we have a suspect or someone in custody,” Meyers said.

Police ask that anyone with information on the shooting call area crime stoppers at (630) 892-1000.

1 Dead in SUV Apartment Crash

A vigil was held Sunday night for a beloved teenage girl who was killed in her sleep when an SUV plowed into her bedroom at an apartment building in Southern California.

Emergency personnel responded around 3:50 a.m. Sunday to reports of a vehicle into a building near Avenue R and 10th Street in Palmdale, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Two affected units of the apartment complex were evacuated after the Nissan Pathfinder careened into the complex.

Giselle Mendoza, a 16-year-old sophomore at Palmdale High School, was pronounced dead when firefighters arrived at the apartment, officials said. Officials said she likely died on impact.

Authorities arrested 20-year-old driver Roberto Rodriguez on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. Preliminary reports indicated that his blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit, sheriff's officials said.

Rodriguez faces charges of DUI and vehicular manslaughter. He was released on $100,000 bail Sunday night and was due in court Tuesday, April 22.

At the time of his release, Rodriguez expressed condolences to the family, but would not respond to NBC4's questions over whether he was drinking or what caused the deadly crash.

“Sincerely, I’m sorry. It wasn’t my intention. Just, I'm sorry," Rodriguez told NBC4's Gadi Schwartz.

Mendoza’s grieving family members said they want justice. The father said it seemed too soon that Rodriguez had been released.

“Me and my brother loved her so much,” said the girl’s sister, Yadira Mendoza, as she struggled to hold back tears. “She passed away and they couldn’t do nothing for her.”

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. David Sauer said Rodriguez, pictured right, may have been driving home when he missed his turn.

"We just heard a witness who said that he estimated the speed to be about 80 miles an hour," Sauer said.

About half of the 11-unit complex was eventually evacuated due to leaking fuel, officials said. Residents would be allowed to return once the SUV was removed from the building.

A candlelight vigil was held for Mendoza at 8 p.m.

A 17-year-old Texas girl died Saturday morning after she was hit by a moving vehicle that she fell from, police said.

At about 2:45 a.m. Saturday, police responded to a call on the 1500 block of South Cooper Street in Arlington. When officers arrived at the address they found Lelys Leyva-Monreal injured in the roadway; three others were trying to help her.

According to police, Monreal and four other passengers were inside a sport utility vehicle traveling southbound on South Cooper Street. As the vehicle was moving, Monreal began hanging out of an open window.

One of the passengers attempted to pull Monreal back inside the vehicle but was unsuccessful. The young woman exited through the window and landed on the roadway. She was then struck by the moving SUV, police said in a news release.

The driver stopped and three of the passengers came to her aid. However, the driver went back to the vehicle and took off, leaving the other passengers on the roadway with Monreal.

The young woman was transported to Medical Center in Arlington by an ambulance and died a short time later due to her injuries, police said.

Officials do not know if alcohol was involved and it's unknown if Monreal fell or jumped from the SUV window.

Crash investigators have been able to locate the driver of the SUV after speaking to witnesses, said police.
