About a dozen iPads were stolen in an overnight burglary at Cardiff Elementary School, Encinitas deputies confirmed.

Officials responded to the school located at 1888 Montgomery Ave. in Cardiff at around 12:35 a.m. Sunday after the school’s alarms were activated.

When deputies arrived, they conducted a search of the entire campus with the help of Sheriff’s K-9s and SDPD officials.

During the search, deputies discovered the school’s perimeter fence had been tampered with and the windows of two classrooms had been broken.

Officials said suspected burglars had entered one of the classrooms, broken a lock on a storage cabinet and stolen approximately 12 iPad tablets.

No suspects were located on campus.

Deputies say the total loss of the school burglary is estimated at $6,360. The investigation is ongoing and the burglary suspects are still at large.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact Sgt. J. Passalacqua or the Encinitas Detective Unit at (760) 966-3500.

An on-duty San Diego Police Department officer was injured when a suspected drunk driver T-boned his patrol car, officials said.

According to Lt. Jim Walker, the collision happened at around 2 a.m. Sunday on westbound Mission Gorge Road at the end of northbound State Route 125 in Santee.

Lt. Walker said an SDPD officer was returning to his beat after dropping off a prisoner at Las Colinas Detention Facility when he was T-boned by a suspected drunk driver in a pick-up truck who ran through a red light.

The driver of the truck was traveling at a high rate of speed. The impact from the crash knocked both vehicles off the roadway, Lt. Walker said.

The victim officer had to be extricated from the wreckage by emergency crews using the Jaws of Life. The process took about 45 minutes.

A witness at the scene said he saw the crash and heard the officer in distress honking his horn inside the wrecked patrol car.

Both the officer and driver of the truck were transported to local hospitals. The officer sustained serious injuries. His current condition is unknown.

Three lanes of Mission Gorge Road were shut down by officials following the collision.

The investigation is ongoing.

The San Diego Chargers beat the Raiders on Sunday 21-24.

Earlier in the game, San Diego linebacker Takeo Spikes and Oakland running back Mike Goodson have been ejected after a skirmish in the second quarter of Sunday's game.

Spikes had to be restrained by field judge Scott Edwards from going after referee John Parry. As he was leaving the field, Spikes took off his helmet and flung it. Teammate Melvin Ingram caught it.

Backup tight end Randy McMichael walked Spikes to the tunnel and the two hugged.

Goodson was blocking Spikes when the two locked up. It continued after the play ended.

Obama, Clinton Most Admired Again: Poll

Admiration abounds for President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The duo are Americans' most admired man and woman — again — in a Gallup poll.

This is the 11th straight year that Clinton has been the most admired woman, while Obama has topped the list of the most admired men five years in a row.

First Lady Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice were next in line behind Clinton on the list of women.

Former South African President Nelson Mandela, Obama's recent Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney, evangelist Billy Graham, former President George W. Bush and Pope Benedict XVI followed Obama on the list of men.

Clinton has topped the list of the most admired women more than any other woman in the history of Gallup's poll — 17 times going back to her first year as first lady in 1993. She finished second to Mother Teresa in 1995 and 1996 and second to Laura Bush in 2001.

President Dwight Eisenhower ranked the most admired man 12 times, a Gallup record for men, followed by former presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, with eight first-place finishes each.

The USA Today/Gallup poll was conducted from Dec. 19 to 22. The "most admired" question was open-ended, asking Americans to name, without prompting, the man and the woman they most admired living in any part of the world.

Gallup first asked Americans to name their most admired man in 1946 and added the ranking of women two years later.

3 Hospitalized After Calif. Theme Park Ride Malfunction

Three people were hospitalized Sunday after a stagecoach tipped when a rear wheel came off on a ride at a southern California amusement park.

Before the 1:30 p.m. incident at Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, Calif., the park was already under scrutiny for malfunctions of another ride.

On Sunday, the left rear wheel detached from a stagecoach that was carrying 14 passengers, said Jennifer Blazey, a park spokeswoman.

Three passengers were taken to a hospital for minor injuries. Two of the guests have been released from the hospital, the spokeswoman said.

The ride will be closed until further notice, Blazey said.

The park was the focus of scrutiny in September when a brake froze on a thrill ride called WindSeeker. The malfunction prompted the temporary closure of the ride at six Knott’s Berry Farms across the country.

It was the park’s second such incident in as many weeks and the latest in a string of international malfunctions on the Dutch-made ride.

Cleveland Browns Fire Coach, GM: AP Source

A person familiar with the decision says the Cleveland Browns have fired coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert.

Shurmur and Heckert were informed Monday at the team's facility, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not yet announced the moves. The dismissals come one day after the Browns lost their finale 24-10 in Pittsburgh, completing a 5-11 season.

Shurmur went 9-23 in two seasons with the Browns, who have undergone almost constant change since their return to the NFL as an expansion franchise in 1999. Heckert infused Cleveland's roster with talent during three years with the team.

Owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner will try to turn around a franchise that has lost at least 11 games the past five seasons.

Chargers Bookend Their Season With Victories over the Raiders

In what is probably head coach Norv Turner’s swan song with San Diego, the Chargers won against the hated division rival Raiders.
But it was an emotional day at Qualcomm.

“It’s the Raiders,” said linebacker Shaun Phillips. “They don’t like us, we don’t like them. It’s going to always be that way.”

And it started from the beginning.

The Raiders won the toss and chose to defer. That sent wide receiver Michael Spurlock back to receive.

He caught it at the 1-yard line and took it to the house. Last week against the Jets, Spurlock returned a punt for a touchdown.

Spurlock is the first Charger in history to return a kickoff and a punt for touchdowns in consecutive games.

On the next three series, the Raiders, then the Chargers, then the Raiders again, went three-and-out.

On the Chargers third series of the game they got within field goal range and Nick Novak kicked it in from 30-yards out.

In the second quarter, the emotions came to a head.

Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor threw an incomplete pass and somewhere in the scuffle after the play the referees came out with three penalties. Two personal foul penalties resulted in ejections.

Chargers linebacker Takeo Spikes would not be allowed to return to what could be his last NFL game. The 15th-year league veteran was voted Most Inspirational Player earlier in the week by his teammates. And in a little scuffle that included Raiders running back Michael Goodman, Spikes career may have ended on a sour note.

An emotional Spikes was escorted off the field by teammate and close friend Randy McMichael, not to return.

“Our friendship is bigger than football,” McMichael said.

Spikes has played in over 200 NFL games without ever making a playoff appearance, and still his attitude and demeanor in the locker room convinced his San Diego teammates to vote him Most Inspirational both years he’s been a Charger.

“We like having Spikes in there because he’s our emotional leader,” Phillips said.

“It’s inspiring for a guy to be playing that long in the NFL,” said safety Corey Lynch. “And just the way he talks to us and encourages us and motivates us and pushes us. TK’s that inspirational player.”

The Raiders finished that emotional drive with a touchdown pass from Pryor to Darius Heyward-Bey, making the score 10-7 Chargers.

San Diego responded with an 81-yard touchdown drive of it’s own. Quarterback Philip Rivers found tight end Antonio Gates from 11 yards out. It was the pair’s 56th time connecting for a TD and with that reception, Gates tied Lance Alworth for most receiving touchdowns ever by a Bolt.

At halftime, the scoreboard read 17-7 Chargers.

In the third quarter the Bolts lengthened their lead.

Rivers hit Danario Alexander deep on the right hand side for a 34-yard touchdown.

Alexander joined the team in October but didn’t see his first play until November first against Kansas City. Since then he’s caught 36 receptions for 624 yards. Wide receiver Malcom Floyd is the only Charger who has caught for more yards on the year.

The fourth quarter finished with a pair of useless Raiders touchdowns.

Although the last one, within the two-minute warning, put Oakland within three points of the Chargers. The attempted onside kick was recovered by San Diego and after a few Rivers kneels, the final score was Chargers 24, Raiders 21.

There has been a lot of speculation this season regarding Turner’s future as head coach. And he as much as admitted in the post-game conference that his era was ending.

If this was his last game as San Diego Chargers’ head coach, Turner’s locker room stuck with him to the end.

“After the game it was pretty emotional,” said safety Eric Weddle. “Just because we all know what’s going to happen and we all love and appreciate Norv and what he’s done for us. Including myself, growing me into the player I am today, he has a lot to do with that.”

“My relationship with Norv goes beyond football,” said cornerback Quentin Jammer, whose future with the team is also uncertain. “I love and respect him for a lot of different reasons than just football. It meant a lot for the team, all the veteran guys to send him off with a win.”

Man Pleads Not Guilty to Falsely Reporting Shooting

A man arrested after allegedly calling in a phone threat targeting a local elementary school pleaded not guilty Monday, denying allegations that he falsely reported the shooting.

Alex Paul Rodriguez, 61, of Oceanside was arrested just six days after the deadly massacre in Newtown after officials said he left a threatening message for staff at Laurel Elementary School.

The message, left at 4:15 a.m. Thursday, said there would be a shooting at the school later that morning according to police. Officers claim the phone ended with "maniacal laughter."

As a result, the school was placed on lockdown and increased police presence was on the school campus.

Investigators say they traced the call to Rodriguez' cell phone and arrested him at his College Boulevard home. No firearms were found at the suspect's home.

In court on Monday, Rodriguez appeared in a wheelchair and denied the allegations brought against him.

Chargers Search Begins Now

0
0

So, now that Norv Turner and A.J. Smith are no longer with the team, the Chargers are on the hunt for replacements. As Sherlock Holmes might say, "The game is a-foot!"

That search is already underway. Charger President Dean Spanos has put together a 4-person team to find and hire the team's next head coach and general manager.

They are: current Chargers executives Dean Spanos, his son John Spanos, and Ed McGuire, along with former Packers general manager Ron Wolf, who's been hired as a consultant.

Their first order of business is to find the G.M., then have that person help in the process of finding the head coach, which makes sense because in today's NFL it certainly helps to have the G.M. and head coach on the same page (something the Chargers found out when Smith and Marty Schottenheimer couldn't play nice).

The Chargers said on Monday they will not be releasing, or commenting on, the names of potential interviewees because a lot of them are still employed by teams that are making a playoff run.

The general manager search should not take very long. Their best candidate is already in-house. Assistant G.M. Jimmy Raye is well respected by peers and players, and has shown the ability to be successful in a general manager role. Plus, the Chargers elevated Smith from his assistant role in 2003, so there is a precedent set.

The team also said Monday they are already asking permission from NFL playoff teams to begin speaking with candidates employed by those teams, so they are not wasting any time.

Snow, Ice Halts Mountain Traffic

It’s been a cold, wet weekend in San Diego – and it’s not over just yet.

Snow showers hit mountain communities Sunday night, leaving the roads icy and slick for Monday. The frosty temperatures are expected to stay Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Motorists are urged to use extra caution as snow plows worked through the night to clear Sunrise Highway.

Staffers at Laguna Mountain Lodge told NBC 7 they were at full occupancy Sunday afternoon, with lots of visitors driving up to see the snow for New Year's Eve.

One mountain side near the lodge was packed with sledders and visitors. Temperatures in the region are expected to remain at around freezing temperatures Monday evening through Tuesday morning.

However, no more rain or snow was expected overnight, according to the National Weather Service.

CHP officials say drivers headed to Mount Laguna should use snow chains on their tires when traveling on icy roads.
