Students' Dream Trip Canceled When Travel Agency Closes

Students at a New Jersey high school French club lost thousands of dollars when the travel agency they used to arrange a week-long trip to France abruptly closed, leaving them with no arrangements or accommodations for their planned trip.

The Westwood High School French club had been planning to travel to Paris this summer until the Mariden USA travel agency declared in an email it was going bankrupt. The company left no information about flights or hotels and did not indicate what would happen to the $3,500 each student paid for the trip.

"We took jobs to pay for it, and I feel like that is just for nothing," said junior Matthew Untalan.

Senior Emily Griffin mourned the loss of a chance to "go and learn French with my two best friends."

"I just feel like somebody grabbed my pocketbook that had $3,500 in it and ran down the street," said parent Darlene Kane.

Parents said they trusted the company because the school had used it a few years ago for similar tours. But they did not know that in the past three years, there have been a dozen complaints against the company, first with the Better Business Bureau and then with the Virginia attorney general.

The BBB rated Mariden USA an F, the worst possible score, citing 14 closed complaints and three open. Virginia's attorney general said there have been six complaints filed about canceled trips since 2011; one has been resolved.

Phone messages and emails to the Alexandria, Va.-based company were not returned.

"It's not right to steal from children, and I don't know how they live with themselves. I couldn't," said parent Ann Eichorn.

Most parents paid for travel insurance, but some were told their policy would not cover loss from the company going bankrupt. Whatever the outcome, the parents wanted to warn others of also becoming potential victims.

4 Imported Hot Sauces Have Excessive Lead: Study

$

Hot sauces sold in the U.S. have been found to contain concentrations of lead that exceed the FDA's standards, according to a new study from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Researchers examined 25 brands from Mexico and South America, and determined that four of them contain more lead than the FDA’s 0.1 parts-per-million standard allows for in candy and dried fruit.

The four sauces are made by companies in Mexico and exported to the U.S.:

  • Salsa Chamoy
  • El Pato
  • Bufalo Salsa Clasica
  • Salsa Picante de Chile Habanero

One of the sauces, El Pato, is made in Mexico and distributed by Los Angeles-based Walker Foods, Inc., the company's president and CEO told NBC4 Wednesday.

Researchers are calling on the FDA and USDA to establish standard guidelines for products imported from Mexico, including hot sauces.

“Without enforceable standards for hot sauces and condiments, manufacturers will not be encouraged to improve quality control measures designed to reduce the amounts of lead and other toxic elements before exporting," Shawn Gerstenberge, a UNLV researcher, said in a news release issued July 15 titled "Study: The Hidden Dangers of Hot Sauce."

The results of the study were published in the scientific journal Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Part B.

Though the FDA has set some standards for lead in food, the study notes there is no known safe level of lead exposure.

Lead, a toxic metal, is commonly found in homes and can cause kidney problems and high blood pressure in adults. Children exposed to lead may suffer from learning disabilities or delayed development, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

CLARIFICATION: This story has been updated to reflect that El Pato’s hot sauce is made in Mexico, then exported to and distributed from Los Angeles-based Walker Foods Inc., said Robert Walker, president and CEO of Walker Foods Inc.

Gallagher Slaying Suspect May Have Had Accomplice

Police believe the 17-year-old man suspected in the death of a 6-year-old Saginaw, Texas, girl may have had at least one accomplice, NBC DFW has learned.

Tyler Holder, 17, is hospitalized after allegedly shooting an Arlington police officer when law enforcement attempted to serve arrest and search warrants at his home Tuesday morning.

Holder is suspected in the death of Alanna Gallagher, whose body was found on a residential street in the North Texas community of Saginaw on July 1.

Law enforcement sources say investigators are actively looking for a possible second person in connection with the case. Surveillance video shows that Holder's pickup truck never left his house the day Gallagher disappeared.

Holder lives a couple of houses away from the Gallagher home. Her body, wrapped in a tarp, was found in a residential street about a mile from her home.

According to the arrest warrant for Holder, DNA evidence links him to Gallagher's slaying.

Suspect Opens Fire on Police

Holder came to the front door with a gun in his waistband, pulled it out and opened fire at the officers on Tuesday morning, a law enforcement source said.

Arlington police Detective Charles Lodatto, who was assignment with the FBI task force investigating Gallagher's slaying, was shot in the groin. The bullet divided his femoral artery, doctors said later Tuesday.

Holder was shot in the head and his condition is life-threatening, MedStar EMS confirmed. He was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.

NBC DFW has learned that the bullet may have gone through his chin and missed his brain and that Holder could recover.

DNA Evidence Links Holder to Slaying

The arrest warrant issued for Holder outlines the events that lead up to the killing of the 6-year-old and includes graphic details of her death.

Gallagher was found wrapped in a tarp with plastic grocery sacks taped over her head with duct tape. The warrant also states the 6-year-old was sexually assaulted.

NBC DFW is not revealing further details about the assault because of its graphic nature.

According to the warrant, Holder was seen pacing "up and down the sidewalk" when Gallagher's body was found.

Neighbors in the area told officers that Holder told them the body recovered was Gallagher before the victim had been identified.

Another neighbor also told officers she had seen a gray tarp in the back yard of Holder's home two to three months ago. At that time, officers didn't see the tarp in the back yard. Officers later determined that the tarp the neighbor spotted in the back yard was similar to the tarp in which Gallagher was wrapped.

Investigators first interviewed Holder on July 1, the day Gallagher was killed. The FBI then interviewed him on July 5 and agreed to provide a DNA sample. On Saturday, Holder's DNA sample matched DNA found on the victim.

The arrest warrant was issued Tuesday.

NBC DFW's Scott Gordon contributed to this report.

Mayor Under Fire: Alleged Victim Details Sex Harassment

A former employee of San Diego’s mayor stepped forward Monday claiming she was forced to resign after she said the mayor treated women as "sexual objects or stupid idiots."

Special Section: Mayor Under Fire

“The past six months turned out to be the worst time of my entire working life,” said Irene McCormack Jackson, former communication director for Mayor Bob Filner.

McCormack Jackson had worked as a journalist and as a manager with the Port of San Diego before she accepted the position on the mayor’s staff.

Among the allegations: that Mayor Filner told her to work without panties.

She also claims the mayor said he wanted to see her naked and couldn't wait to consummate their relationship even though they had only a working relationship.

“He thought it was acceptable behavior to regularly make sexual comments that were crude and disgusting,” McCormack Jackson said.

She claims that Allen Jones resigned as deputy chief of staff after a senior staff meeting in which the mayor was told that his behavior with women “was terrible and possibly illegal.”

McCormack Jackson alleges that the mayor laughed off the warning.

It was at that time she said she realized the mayor would not change his behavior.

"It is time for him to take responsibility for the harm he caused me and for the damage he caused so many others who believed in him, supported him and elected him," she said.

Attorney Gloria Allred announced that McCormack Jackson filed a lawsuit Monday in San Diego. Read the complaint here.

Allred said they filed an administrative complaint with the Department of Fair Employment and received a right to sue letter which was a prerequisite in order to file a lawsuit alleging sexual harassment in the state of California.

Filner said in a statement responding to the lawsuit that he was “saddened” by the allegations. He asked the public not to jump to conclusions and to wait for "due process" to unfold.

“I do not believe these claims are valid. That is why due process is so important," he said. "I intend to defend myself vigorously and I know that justice will prevail.”

Allred referred to the mayor's recent public apology in which he declared he needs help during the news conference, saying, "apologies alone will not take care of this injustice."

“Do you need help in order to know it’s inappropriate to place women in headlocks while making vile, disgusting sexual comments,” Allred said.

“What help do you need to stop treating women as “pieces of meat,” Allred asked.

The allegations outlined in the complaint are as follows:

January:
Moments before the State of the City address, Mayor Filner allegedly told her "I would do a better job if you gave me a kiss."

February:
After seeing a police officer's handcuffcs, Mayor Filner allegedly told her "You know what I would like to do with those handcuffs?"

February/March:
Filner allegedly told her "Wouldn't it be great if you took off your panties and worked without them on?"

April:
Filner allegedly put McCormack Jackson into a "headlock" and pulled her along with him telling her she was beautiful and asking when they would consummate their marriage.

April/May:
Filner put his arm around her shoulder and allegedly told her "One day we are going to get married."

June:
After proofing a press release in her office, he asked her "When are you going to get naked? Come on, give me a kiss"

It was this incident in June when McCormack Jackson claims Filner refused to leave her office telling her "I am the Mayor. I can go anywhere I want, any time I want."

She also alleges that three women "had to be driven home because of his abusive treatement" and five schedulers resigned because of his behavior.

Allred said they are interested in hearing from any other individuals who may be victims of the mayor.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department has launched a special hotline after Mayor Filner admitted to disrespecting and even intimidating women in the past.

The hotline is available to anyone who wants to report sexual harassment allegations involving the mayor or his office.

On Saturday, Mayor Filner attended the designation of a section of El Cajon Boulevard in City Heights as Little Saigon and ignored NBC 7’s questions involving the scandal.

NBC 7 has made repeated requests for an interview to discuss the allegations that the mayor groped and kissed female constituents without their permission.

As he brushed by television news crews, Filner jumped into the back seat of a vehicle and drove from the event, running a red light in the process.

It was one of few public appearances by the mayor since allegations of sexual harassment were made public two weeks ago.

He's been a no-show at a number of events he was expected to attend.

Timeline: Bob Filner, Mayor Under Fire

Filner released a videotaped statement admitting he needs help but he has yet to respond directly to specific allegations.

McDonnell: No Thought to Resigning

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell says he has given no thought to resigning in the wake of a federal investigation into gifts and loans a wealthy political donor has given the governor and his family.

"I'm not going anywhere. I love this job ... there has been no consideration of that," McDonnell told News4 Northern Virginia Bureau Chief Julie Carey in a satellite interview from Kabul, Afghanistan, where he has traveled to visit Virginia troops.

Yesterday, McDonnell issued a written statement apologizing for the first time for "embarrassment" he or his family might have caused Virginia.

The statement read, "I want you to know that I broke no laws and that I am committed to regaining your sacred trust and confidence."

McDonnell also reported he and his family had repaid more than $120,000 in loans to political donor and Star Scientific CEO Jonnie Williams. The Washington Post has reported in recent months that Williams also paid $15,000 for one of McDonnell's daughter's wedding receptions, provided a $15,000 shopping spree for First Lady Maureen McDonnell and also got the Governor a $6,500 Rolex watch.

The gifts came at a time when Williams was trying to get attention for a new nutritional supplement produced by his company.

When News4 asked the Governor if he also intends to repay Williams for the gifts, he did not directly answer the question, but replied, "I've said a lot about that already. There will be plenty more to say.

"I've always believed if you do a good job that all those other things will take care of themselves. For a long time the people of Virginia have trusted me to lead and do well and that's why we've been able to solve so many problems together," he said.

But, McDonnell conceded, as he did in his earlier written statement, that he's let Virginians down.

"To the degree that some of the choices I might have made in my personal life, or my family might have made with some of those gifts, if its undermined people's sacred trust in me or government I want to make it right."

Here are some of the excerpts of his interview with News4's Julie Carey.

Carey: "What wrongdoing, specifically, were you apologizing for?"

McDonnell: "I think because there were several gifts and loans and it all came from one donor there was at least in the view of the public, an appearance of impropriety.

"I've served the people of Virginia for 22 years now, and I'm deeply sorry those things that have been done by me or my family have created a problem for Virginia's government and have caused some embarrassment. So I thought it was the right thing to do to make those loan payments back and begin to heal the trust that might have been broken between me and the people.

"So that's a step, and we are doing to do some other things in the future, but mainly I'm going to do what I've done in the past and that's get big things done. I've got 5 1/2 months left to do that and I"m that's what I'm going to focus on."

Carey: "Why did you decide now to repay the loans, and what do you hope it convey?"

McDonnell: "As you know, we've had a complete audit done of state government, and there have been no contracts or monies from the state or appointments or anything else that's gone to this donor.

"What I'm trying to demonstrate to people is what I've said from the beginning. My top role as governor, as you know, has been to promote Virginia business, to create job and opportunities. And we do it the same way for every business, regardless of what their status might be.

"And so I wanted people to know that, that Virginia government is working well, that we've continuing to focus on the things Virginians care about. We have a big surplus. We're working on transportation and education reforms, and I'm going to continue in this five months to be laser-focused on getting big things done.

"But I thought it was appropriate to look to the degree some of the choices I might have made in my personal life, or my family might have made with some of those gifts. If it undermined people's sacred trust in me or government, I wanted to make it right and that's what I was hoping to signal yesterday and let people know I continue to focus on the things that they care about."

Carey: "What consideration have you given to resignation?"

McDonnell: "None, I'm not going anywhere. I love this job.

"I think there were a couple of very bad rumors about that. I have been able to get some major problems solved for our citizens. Virginia is in better shape that most states. Democrats and Republicans are working together well in our state. I've tried to create that climate for bipartisan cooperation.

"I think that's what people appreciate and expect out of government, and that's what we're are going to try to do in these last five months, so there's been no consideration of that."

New Details Released in Firetruck Death

New details have surfaced about a 19-year-old woman who died after she was riding in a car that was hit by a firetruck.

Evelyn Courtney, 19, had a blood alcohol content of 0.2 - roughly three times the legal limit. Investigators also said they found a broken bottle of liquor in the car.

Courtney was not driving during the incident. Behind the wheel was 44-year-old Robbie Gillespie, who suffered minor injuries.

According to a report by the medical examiner’s office, Courtney left the home sometime during the night with the family dog. Gillespie then picked her up at a spot near her home.

Gillespie was driving southbound on Midland Road around 5 a.m. and ran a red light when a Poway fire truck was traveling eastbound on Poway Road. The fire truck displayed its emergency lights, but was not using the siren.

Both Gillespie and the firetruck two were traveling at the speed limit, but collided when the firetruck entered the intersection.

Courtney was pronounced dead at the scene, and officials later found that her dog also died in the car.

Investigators learned that the driver and Courtney had known each other for a little more than a year. That night he has asked the teenager to pay for a hotel so he could sleep, as he told investigators he’d just lost his job.

No charges have been filed against Gillespie and the investigation is ongoing. He had been released from jail just two days before the crash, the San Diego Sheriff’s Department confirmed last month.

Courtney was an aspiring print and runway model who worked at Steinmart in Poway.

A 330-pound green sea turtle is being FedExed from the Florida Keys to Las Vegas, the Florida Keys News Bureau said Wednesday.

The turtle, named OD for the dive boat that rescued it off Key Largo in 2008, will be heading to The Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, where it is expected to “retire.”

Sea Turtle Hospital Expected to Open in Florida

OD is believed to be about 50 years old, but cannot be released back to the wild because it is missing one of its two lungs.

Although the turtle has been cared for at the Florida Keys-based Turtle Hospital for almost five years, hospital officials had been trying to find the turtle a more comfortable home.

SeaWorld Releases 3 Rehabilitated Turtles

OD will soon be in a new 1.3-million-gallon aquarium in Las Vegas, where it will live with other cared-for marine animals including sea turtles.

The turtle is being placed in a transition pool and has to undergo a medical examination to ensure it is fit to travel.

Video May Answer Why Coach Quit

An incident with an assistant coach may be the reason one of San Diego’s most successful coaches stepped down unexpectedly.

In her 16 years, Beth Burns has more wins than any coach in the history of San Diego State University women’s basketball. She was named conference coach of the year the past two seasons. However, less than a year into a new five year contract, Burns announced in April she would be stepping down. At the time, there was little explanation by Burns or the school.
Now it appears it may all go back to a game against Colorado State last February. In a video of that game, obtained by the San Diego Union Tribune, Burns can be seen twice making contact with an assistant coach. The first time, she appears to hit a clipboard the assistant is holding. Later, she appears to hit that coach in the shoulder.
According to Burns’ attorney, the assistant coach in that video is Adam Barrett. On Tuesday, NBC 7 obtained a settlement stating that SDSU will pay Barrett and his attorney a total of $250,000. The settlement cites a dispute over Barrett’s contract not being renewed. It does not mention Beth Burns.
On Tuesday, NBC 7 spoke to the attorney representing Beth Burns. Ed Chapin says Burns was told that what happened with Barrett during that February game is the sole reason she was asked to step down. Chapin said Burns was surprised and upset. Chapin said they are preparing for a potential lawsuit against the school, but have not filed anything at this point.

A 19-year-old man is accused of kidnapping a woman in San Diego, taking her across the country and keeping her as a sex slave.

Brandon Todd is being held on a federal kidnapping charge, after he was taken into custody July 10.

His capture came after his alleged victim escaped by faking an asthma attack in May and calling police, according to an FBI affidavit.

The ordeal started in April at the Greyhound bus terminal downtown, according to the FBI. The criminal complaint said a 26-year-old woman, who was traveling from San Diego to Florida, met Todd and was coerced into sharing a hotel room with him.

In an affidavit, an FBI agent said Todd threatened to harm the woman and her family if she didn’t comply. He allegedly showed her weapons, told her he had gang connections and destroyed her phone so she couldn’t be tracked.

After two days in the hotel, Todd took the woman cross-country to Naples, N.Y., according to investigators. According to the FBI, Todd kept her against her will at his grandparents’ house, where he repeatedly raped her. The victim said she was held captive for more than two weeks.

One man was arrested Tuesday night after shots were fired at an apartment complex with children in a nearby unit.

The incident started around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night in La Mesa.

A neighbor told NBC 7 San Diego that he was scared, especially since he has young kids. When he heard a gunshot fired, he forced his children to hide under the mattress.

According to a neighbor, he and his family have felt threatened by the suspect for a while, and when the neighbor came to the suspect's apartment to confront him the suspect pulled out a .38 caliber revolver and pointed the gun at his head.

“He waves a gun at my face. He pointed it at my head three times. Then he aimed it at a direction and shot it off,” said neighbor Ezra Snyder.

While police were en route, neighbors heard a shot fired. Police said the suspect accidentally fired a shot inside his own apartment while trying to unload his guns.

The suspect, 46 year old Ronald Neville, was handcuffed at the scene and taken away by police.

Neville has been booked into the county jail and faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon and criminal threats.

Second Alleged Victim Describes Filner Incident

A second alleged victim has come forward claiming San Diego Mayor Bob Filner acted inappropriately toward her at a public event.

Laura Fink, a political consultant, told KPBS Monday that Filner grabbed her backside at a fundraising dinner she was working at after a colleague said she had “worked her ass off” for Filner.

After allegedly touching her posterior, he then allegedly said, “No, it’s still there!”

Fink later emailed Filner and demanded an apology, according to a document provided to KPBS. Fink said that apology never came.

She also told KPBS the reason she did not come forward sooner was that she “was trying to build a career in the political field … and Bob Filner has a reputation for swift retribution and for holding grudges.”

Special Section: Mayor Under Fire

Filner has been accused of sexually harassing multiple women. Two have publicly come forward since the claims were made earlier this month.

On Monday, one of Filner’s former staffers Irene McCormack Jackson claimed that Filner told her to “work without panties” and detailed other alleged acts of sexual harassment. Jackson called her experience working for the mayor “the worst time of my entire working life.”

McCormack has filed a lawsuit with prominent lawyer Gloria Allred.

Filner responded to the allegations with a statement, saying in part: “I am saddened by the charges that were leveled against me today. Once due process is allowed to unfold, I am certain there will be a better understanding of this situation.”

After being accused of sexually harassing employees, Filner released a videotaped statement admitting he needs help, but he has yet to respond directly to specific allegations.

"Meatball" to Be Rose Parade Star

Glendale’s most famous resident – at least, its most well-known erstwhile ursine citizen – will be the highlight of the city’s entry into the Tournament of Roses Parade come New Year's Day.

Meatball, the beloved bear who marauded through foothill neighborhoods last year, is going to be featured on the Glendale Rose Parade float, the Glendale City Council unanimously voted Tuesday night.

The float design is dubbed "Let’s Be Neighbors," which will showcase Meatball popping out of a garbage can, as seen in the rendering below.

Meatball was twice tranquilized and taken deep into the Angeles National Forest after being found eating from area homes – once nabbing his namesake treat from a refrigerator in a garage.

On his third foray into populated areas -- in La Canada Flintridge -- the bear was lured with a trail of french fries, tranquilized and taken to Lions Tigers & Bears, an animal sanctuary in San Diego County. He lives there today.

Meanwhile, Meatball had spawned a Twitter account and a following that seemed to appreciate encounters between wildlife and humans in foothill areas.

On Tuesday, the Twitter account named GlenBearian/Meatball tweeted," Told ya I'd be back ..."

The design for the $155,000 float will mark Glendale’s 100th entry in the Rose Parade, which itself will mark its 125th anniversary on Jan. 1, 2014.

The float will feature other “noted native inhabitants," according to a city staff report, including a coyote, mule deer, red-tailed hawk, raccoon, skunk and more.

The city abuts the Verdugo Mountains and the San Gabriel Mountains, where such wildlife reside.

The theme of the 2014 Rose Prade, held in Glendale’s neighboring city of Pasadena, is “Dreams Come True.”

“The float dreams of the day when all the area’s residents – people and wildlife alike – can call get along together,” said the Glendale staff report.

Four years ago border patrol agent Robert Rosas Jr. was shot and killed in the line of duty.

His memory lives in a commemorative run that continued all night Tuesday and into Wednesday morning along the U.S.-Mexico border just outside of Campo.

It’s 25 steps from the side of the road to the scrub brush where border agent Robert Rosas was ambushed and killed in 2009.

For the courage it took to take those steps, family, friends and fellow agents are running and walking the 68 mile trip from here to his grave sight in Rosas Hometown of El Centro.

“He loved life. That’s something I remember about him the most. He was never down," relay organizer Francisco Santos Jr. said.

Four years fellow border patrol agent Francisco Santos has kept this group running and Robert Rosas memory alive. Santos runs 25.5 miles of the is 68 mile commemorative journey. Charlie 255 was Rosas patrol call sign.

“Even in his death he still  brings us together and we love it. It motivates us. He gets us through the night,” Santos said.

It is a relay. Every 2.55 miles runners pass this coin on to the next one. It’s minted in Robert’s likeness.

Some 60 plus friends, border agents and family participate.

“I just miss his presence .I miss him next to us,” sister-in-law Andrea Davila said.

Rosas was lured to this remote desolate border road by five bandits wanting to steal his night vision gear. He was robbed and shot multiple times.

Rosas is survived by his two young children and wife Rosalee.

“You’ve never left us alone. You told us from day one you would never forget him. You’ve shown me so much more then I could have imagined,” Rosalie said.

Robert’s life and love of it is remembered in every stride and step and in the hearts of those who return every year to take the journey.

The relay takes 12 to 13 hours. It is exhausting physically and emotionally. And at the finish line, participants are just as excited bout next year.

Drivers Warned to Steer Clear During “Darmageddon”

State and local officials are warning drivers to avoid the 805 freeway in August.

From Sunday Aug. 18 at 3 p.m. to the following Monday at 5 a.m. Interstate 805 will be closed from state Route 54 to state Route 905.

It's being referred to as “Darmegeddon” – a 14-hour shutdown on the 805 in the South Bay to expand the freeway. During that time, the East Palomar Street Bridge will be removed to make room for a Direct Access Ramp, known as DAR, leading to the warning name “Darmegeddon.”

The big message to drivers is to steer clear of the 805 during the closure to avoid major traffic.

A bridge will be gone after the overnight construction and motorists can already see the area being prepared.

Local transportation and city representatives from the South Bay announced the “Steer Clear” campaign to warn drivers now of the upcoming closure.

Drivers can use the 125 toll road for free during that time and Interstate 5 is also an alternate route.

The finished project will have express lanes for carpoolers and buses and begin the start of the East Palomar Street Transit Station and a Park & Ride station.

Community leaders say it’s a little bit of a headache now but positive for future.

“We will have to endure growing pain,” said National City Mayor Ron Morrison.

U.S. Postal Service Threatens to End Door-to-Door Delivery

Door-to-door postal delivery could be soon coming to an end.

To trim nearly $4.5 billion a year for the cash-strapped agency, Congressman Darrell Issa of California is proposing that the U.S. Postal Service do away with door-to-door delivery and shift service to curbside and neighborhood cluster boxes.

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee will vote on the measure Wednesday, which could affect about 37 million residences and businesses.

The U.S. Postal Service lost about $16 billion last year and spends about $30 billion annually on mail delivery. The federal service does not receive any money from the federal government and relies mainly on postage sales, delivery services and other products.

Mail services has dropped nearly 25% since 2006.

Unions have said the proposal is a bad idea, especially since it would impact the elderly and disabled.

The postal service proposed ending Saturday service earlier this year -- a decision that it later reversed.

When you're looking for a restaurant or hotel, or need a gardener or an auto mechanic, websites like "Yelp," "Bing" and "Google+" can be a big help.

But NBC 7 Investigates found that some ratings on those sites might not give you the full picture.

And one social media expert says there’s a more reliable way to get the "low-down" on a business, before you buy.

Small businesses know how important your reviews are on social media websites.

So they'll sometimes ask you post a compliment if you like their product.

But Greg Van de Velde told us that moving into his downtown condo was a major headache.

"Horrific,” he recalls. “I mean, I've never seen anything like it."

Greg’s criticism is aimed at the ABC Moving Center, which he paid to move dozens of boxes, all of them clearly marked with their destination.

But he says the movers left the boxes in the condo’s entryway.

“And I'd say, 'That needs go to the garage.' And they would just turn and walk away."

Boxes meant for the bedroom, were left in the hallway.

"To the point where I would just have a stack of boxes, and I couldn't even get into the house what-so-ever."

A job estimated at four hours took almost six, with Greg doing much of the work.

"They were slow,” he says of the moving crew. “They were inefficient. One of them was talking on his phone all the time. They were bad."

So Greg called ABC Moving’s corporate office to complain, and ask for a partial refund.

"I was stunned when she said it."

Greg says a manager offered to discount the company’s $400 fee, if he agreed not to post a negative review on "Yelp," Google, or any other ratings website.

He also had to promise, in writing, that none of his relatives or friends would post a bad review.

"She bought me off, yeah," he admits with an embarrassed smile.

But Greg says that manager also taught Greg a lesson.

He says that experience “completely undermines Yelp", and now has much less trust in web-based ratings sites.

ABC Moving repeatedly declined our request for comment.

We also found other, less heavy-handed attempts to influence customer ratings.

ACE Parking offered a chance at fifty dollars in gas, for customers who posted a review on Yelp, about one of the company’s downtown San Diego parking lots.

ACE also declined our request for comment.

And e-mails from The Pilates Room offer free classes and a chance for a free membership, for customers who "like" the business on Facebook, and write favorable reviews on at least two websites of their choice.

In a written response to our questions, the owner of The Pilates Room says she has discontinued that offer, but told us: "Nobody will waste their time writing a review unless they like the service being offered."

She also guarantees that all her company’s good reviews are “authentic and honest”.

Rebecca Coates, a social media expert in the S.D.S.U. journalism department, says ratings websites are often the first thing prospective customers see, when they search the web.

She says companies will go to “desperate lengths" to get the best possible reviews on those sites.

Coates says Yelp clearly warns businesses they should not offer financial incentives to generate positive reviews, or discourage negative comments.

More importantly, she thinks those strategies can backfire, on ratings websites.

Coates says companies should instead deal with problems head-on, with a genuine apology, and refund, when appropriate.

"The (complaining customer) might post favorably,” Coates says. “You know, 'We had problems, but the management was gracious about it, solved our problem, gave us a refund.'"

Coates does use Yelp and other ratings websites.

But she avoids general reviews, good and bad, and instead looks for specific problems or compliments.

Coates says there's another way to find the goods and services that are best for you:

Talk with friends, or reach out to them on Facebook and Twitter.

You have something in common with them, so their likes, and dislikes, should be similar to yours.

And their recommendations are unfiltered.

A spokesperson for Yelp told us the website discourages businesses from soliciting reviews and uses an automated review filter that prevents some of them from being posted.

Yelp also confirms that its contracts prohibit companies from paying for reviews, and companies that do so can be removed from Yelp's pages.

People in the South Bay are hoping an injured pit bull gets the medical care it needs after a bizarre attack at St. James Park.

Police say the dog, named "Chica," is in need of several stitches after a homeless man used a handsaw to hurt the dog over the weekend.

Witnesses say the man tried to attack the dog’s owner and the dog stepped in to protect her. In the chaos, the pit bull bit the homeless man, who then used the saw on the dog, leaving a deep 3-inch gash on her head.

A group of men who saw the attack kicked and punched the homeless man and restrained him until police could get to the scene.

The dog is expected to be OK, but police say no one has the money to pay the $600 for the dog's stitches.
