Cricket (What Else?) in Silicon Valley on July 4 Holiday

What could be more American on the Fourth of July that apple pie and... cricket?

Well, that's what more than 120 cricketers are doing this long July 4 weekend in Silicon Valley, in an annual tournament hosted by the Northern California Cricket Association that starts Thursday.

While cricket is a game started by the Brits (ironically) and wildly popular in South Asia, the polite, complicated game is actually the precusor to baseball. Which is indeed an American sport. And it's beloved by many Indo-American and Pakistani Americans who now call the Bay Area home.

"It's going to be a lot of fun," said Hemant Buch, one of the South Bay's premier cricket advocates and the founder of a youth cricket academy. He added that his colleagues chose the day, not specifically because of Independence Day, but the long weekend provides ample time for players to travel and enjoy the game.

There are 12 teams competing in the event on various cricket "pitches," or fields, in Santa Clara and San Jose. Each team of about 11 players paid $2,000 to participate and the winning team will earn $20,000, Buch said.

Most of the players are from the Bay Area, but there is one team from Arizona and another team representing the Southern California Cricket Assocation based in Van Nuys. There's also a handful of international players from the West Indies and India.

"All of us growing up played basketball, but we grew up in countries like India, and that's where we developed a passion for cricket," said Santa Clara cricketer Saami Siddiqui, a recent UC-Berkeley grad.

Cricket has long been gaining ground in the Bay Area. Buch's association and others have been pushing for permanent cricket pitches that now exist in various cities such as Cupertino, Santa Clara, Fremont, San Jose and Dublin.

While cricket gave birth to baseball, the game is much longer and plays by different rules.

A field is really an oval-shaped 22-yard long pitch.  Each team takes it in turn to bat, in which they attempt to accumulate as many runs as possible, while the other team fields, attempting to prevent the batting team scoring runs. Once 10 batsmen from the batting side have been dismissed, the team is said to be "all out" and the two teams change roles. The games can take hours, if not days.

There is also a movement to make cricket an Olympic sport. If this tournament is any indication, America would have a strong team.

A 7-year-old Chicago boy was in critical condition Thursday evening after being shot while picnicking with his family for the Independence Day holiday, witnesses said.

The boy was shot at Nat King Cole Park, in the 300 block of East 85th Street, in Chicago's Chatham neighborhood, at about 7:25 p.m., authorities said.

He was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where officials said he was in critical condition.

Throughout the city, four people were killed and at least 14 others wounded in shootings since the holiday began.

Cole Park has seen its share of violence. Two people were shot there within a month's time in 2010, prompting officials to remove the basketball rims. Slain Chicago police officer Thomas Wortham, who lived nearby, was focused on restoring the park when he was shot and killed outside his parent's home three years ago.

A Doylestown, Pa. man is arrested in the stabbing of a homeless man, found bleeding on the street outside a train station.

The Bucks County District Attorney's Office says Dale Wakefield was arrested in Baltimore after fleeing town.

The victim, 71-year-old Army veteran George Mohr, was stabbed more than 70 times, according to prosecutors.

A motorist driving by the train station on the 100 block of S. Clinton Street spotted Mohr around 2:45 a.m. and called for help.

Police say it originally appeared as if Mohr had been hit by a car, but once medics arrived on scene they realized he'd been stabbed.

Tonight, Mohr remains in critical condition at Temple University Hospital.

Prosecutors say Wakefield was turned in by his sister, who tipped off authorities after her brother allegedly confessed to her about the stabbing.

Wakefield was out celebrating his 21st birthday before the stabbing occured, prosecutors say.

He's now charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and possessing an instrument of crime.

Sun and Fun with the Red, White and Blue

Lifeguards and law enforcement say they have extra resources on the beach and in the water as thousands of San Diegans flock to the coastline for their Fourth of July celebrations.

Whether it’s swimming and beach volleyball or barbequing along a parade route, the recurring theme for many on the national holiday is following family tradition.

In Carlsbad, RV's lined up along the beach Thursday morning with the smell of breakfast filling the air.

Roger Bates said he’s been coming to Carlsbad for a decade along with a group of about 20 families.

Once they've finished up the eggs and mimosas in the morning, Bates is planning on cooking up hot hogs, burgers, carne asada and pork chops along with some vegetarian offerings for his wife.

“It doesn’t get any better than this,” he said. “This is San Diego at its finest right here.”

Down the beach, Maria Matarese and her family were getting settled in after arriving around 4 a.m.

The early wake up and pack up is a 10-year family annual tradition.

She and her family plan on “Just spending the whole day at the beach,” she said. “And waiting for the fireworks.”

To the south, cars pack the westbound lanes of the Coronado Bay Bridge as people try to make it into the small town for the annual festivities.

Visiting Coronado has always been a Fourth of July tradition for Jocelyn Smerz and her family. She called it one of the most patriotic places.

“Everyone is really nice and respectful and it’s just really calm and fun to take the kids,” she said.

Children wearing their red, white or blue T-shirts sport special holiday headbands, hair ties or sunglasses.

Steve and Becky Carver may have moved to Florida, but they wouldn't miss the event.

They have been attending the parade for the past 25 years.

Coronado is the place their family gathers every year for a reunion the night before so they can be together for the holiday.

“It’s a little city within a city and it goes way out for the Fourth of July and the Coronado parade,” Steve Carver said.

John Lonan agrees. He and his family have gotten up early for the parade every year for the past 15 years.

“It’s a great day,” he said. “You just park your car, ride your bike and everybody’s having a barbeque, everybody’s friendly.”

Images: San Diego Celebrates Fourth of July

Along the San Diego coast, Mission Beach was a popular spot for people looking to "see and be seen."

Lupe Cepeda waded through a lot of traffic to get to just the right spot on Mission Beach.

“The beach is crowded but I like the fact that it is crowded,” Cepeda said. “Because everybody’s celebrating and everybody’s getting ready to have a good time tonight.”

San Diego resident Ryan Creer and his friends carried five tents and two grills to the beach for the day.

“We parked two miles away and we had to carry a lot of this stuff and drop it off so, it’s a lot of work, but well worth it, definitely,” Creer said.

Bike riders, skaters and walkers enjoyed the view along the beach while swimmers took advantage of the warm surf.

But there weren’t many folks as excited as Alex Dodge who was visiting San Diego from Arizona for the first time.

Donning red white and blue glasses and vest, Dodge said, “Fourth of July is nuts, I can’t wait for tonight.

“I mean it’s celebrating America’s birthday so everybody’s about to go really hard,” he said.

28 Hurt in SoCal Fireworks Explosion: Police

Dozens of Fourth of July celebrants were injured Thursday night in a "fireworks mishap" at a Simi Valley, Calif., park, authorities said.

The injury count changed multiple times over the course of a quickly developing breaking news story. As of 11:30 p.m., 28 people were reported injured, Ventura County Fire Department spokesman Mike Lindberry told reporters at the scene.

Of those 28 victims, 20 were transported to the hospital -- 16 suffered minor injuries, four suffered moderate to severe injuries, Lindberry said. Eight people were treated and released on scene.

Initial injury counts reported 20 people were hurt then that figure was revised to 14 before Lindberry detailed those hurt in the explosion.

Between 8,000 and 10,000 people were expected to attend the Independence Day celebration Thursday night.

Witnesses said the professional fireworks show lasted just a few minutes before the huge explosion went off.

"We saw about three minutes of the show. There was some that went up in the area and everything just kind of scattered outwards and then everybody just started running," a witness told NBC4.

"Everything exploded and parts came flying everywhere,” another witness told NBC4. “People were running everywhere. So, it was pretty scary."

It happened about 9:20 p.m. at Rancho Santa Susana Community Center and Park (map), said Cmdr. John Parks, a watch commander for the Simi Valley Police Department.

Parks called the detonation a "fireworks mishap." He said initial information suggested the explosion was accidental.

Emergency medical and fire personnel were already at the park to monitor the fireworks show, so the victims were attended to quickly, Parks said.

The extent of the victims' injuries was not immediately known. It also was unclear how many of the 14 injured were transported to the hospital.

After the blast, park was evacuated, Parks said. Aerial footage showed dozens of people lingering on the outskirts of the scene and near the triage area set up on the grass, pictured below.

San Diego's 'Big Bay Boom' a Success

After last year's epic fail, locals surrounding San Diego Bay got all that they hoped for with a fireworks display to remember.

"We have fireworks!" Port of San Diego announced via Twitter just after 9 p.m. as bright colors lighted up the sky over the Embarcadero Thursday.

Auggie Santore, the man who shouldered the blame for San Diego's busted Big Bay Boom Fireworks Display of 2012, could not contain his excitement.

Santore screamed, "and the crowd goes wild!" as soon as the fireworks display went off without a hitch.

Santore's company picked up the $125,000 tab for this year's display after thousands of fireworks went off in 15 seconds within minutes before the show was supposed to begin last year.

Massive Key Lime Pie Created in Key West

Revelers at Key West's Key Lime Festival are hoping a massive Key Lime Pie is big enough for the record books.

The gargantuan pie, which measured 8-feet, 1-inch in diameter, was unveiled Thursday at the annual South Florida Independence Day event.

Organizers documented the dessert for submission to the Guinness Book of World Records, who will have to certify whether it's the world's largest.

"People like to say nothing's more American than apple pie, but down here in the Florida Keys, we like to say nothing's as Keysey as Key lime pie on the Fourth of July," said festival co-founder David Sloan, who created the giant Key lime pastry with three fellow chefs.

It took 5,760 Key limes, 200 pounds of graham crackers and 55 gallons of sweetened condensed milk to create the pie, which required a specially-made pan the size of a pickup truck.

Slices of the pie were sold to benefit the Key West Firehouse Museum.

The Key Lime Festival continues through Saturday with a Key lime pie-eating contest and "Miss Key Lime" pageants for children and adults.

Video: Fireworks Were "Aiming at Us"

0

Cheers and celebration turned to screams and confusion at the start of a Simi Valley fireworks show Thursday night as spectators realized something had gone wrong, igniting a ground-level explosion that sent debris and fireworks into the crowd.

James Wilhite, a front-row spectator at the show about 40 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles in Rancho Santa Susana Park, was recording the start of the show -- greeted with "oohs" and "aahs." Those awed gasps stopped about three minutes into the show when what investigators believe was a malfunction involving a launching station scattered fireworks in several directions.

"That one row, all of the fireworks went off," said Wilhite. "They were actually aiming at us."

In a statement issued Friday morning, Simi Valley police said a portion of the crowd was about 800 feet -- more than the length of two football fields -- from the launch area. The first of the fireworks appeared to launch as planned, arching high into the night sky.

Wilhite's video then shows an explosion of light at ground level, and what appears to be a spark flashes in front of his camera. Children can be heard crying out for parents, who attempted to console them amid the confusion and darkness.

"There were some that went up in the air," said witness Michelle Rodriguez. "Everything just kind of scattered outwards. Then, everybody just started running. We felt the heat pull back toward us. That was it -- end of the show."

Other witnesses said they felt a concussion from the ground-level blast. Sharp pieces of debris rocketed into the crowd as spectators ducked for cover before backing away from the launch area.

Spectator Scott Nelson said people took cover in a process he described as "organized chaos."

"All of the sudden, everything exploded -- almost like a ground explosion," said Nelson, who lives near the park located south of the 118 Freeway near East Los Angeles Avenue. "The guests I had dove for cover. They were climbing over chairs, running out of the way.

"Some were going high, some were going a few feet, some were going 10 feet."

Spectators were allowed to return to the park Friday to retieve items left behind.

Dozens of specatators were injured, but not of the injuries are considered life-threatening. Police described the injuries as "consistent with shrapnel and projectile type" injuries.

A preliminary investigation indicated at least one of the launching stations fell and launched fireworks into the crowd.

"Although it is still unknown why the launching station fell over, there are no indications of foul play and it appears that this is an industrial type accident," Simi Valley police said in a statement. "Due to the indications that this is an industrial accident, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal OSHA) was notified."

Debris remained scattered on the soccer field early Friday as authorities continued the investigation. The area was blocked off as crews removed unexploded ordnance.

Police: Man Bites Off Friend's Ear While Driving on I-95

A portion of southbound I-95 was closed Thursday morning so police could look for a man's ear, The Free Lance-Star reports.

Officers were called to the scene just after 8 a.m. after a number of drivers reported seeing a man running in and out of traffic near mile marker 121 in Spotsylvania County.

The victim told police he and a friend got into a fight while driving through the county, and the friend bit the victim's ear off and threw it out the window.

A police spokesman told The Free Lance-Star the victim's entire ear was missing.

Police blocked a lane of the interstate and eventually found the ear on the shoulder of the road. The victim and his ear were taken to Mary Washington Hospital, where surgeons were attempting to re-attach it. There's no word on whether the attempt was successful.

The victim's friend, 31-year-old Floyd Warren of the Bronx, New York, was charged with malicious wounding.
