Pokémon Go Fest Attendees Refunded as Glitches Plague Event

Thousands of people descended on Chicago Saturday for Pokémon Go Fest – an event that was billed as a celebration of the smartphone game’s first year but instead became a debacle plagued by massive lines and connectivity issues.

Organized by the game’s developer, Niantic, the all-day festival in Grant Park was the company’s first official live event for players of the augmented reality game.

However, upon arrival, the roughly 20,000 attendees were met with hours-long lines to enter the festival, and then technical problems preventing play once inside the event.

Niantic’s chief marketing officer addressed the crowd to boos in the late morning, citing three specific problems that rendered attendees unable to access the game.

“One is a network issue. One of the providers is trying to pump in some more bandwidth so that’s something that we’re working with them closely on,” CMO Mike Quigley said onstage.

“The other two issues are on the Niantic side. There’s a crash bug issue that we’ve identified. I know some of you have had that issue, as well as an authentication issue, so we’ve got it completely pinpointed to those three things.”

Quigley said the company would offer players a refund on the $20 ticket price, as well as $100 in the game credit Pokecoins.

However, even with a refund, many attendees – some of whom traveled to Chicago from around the world – will only receive a fraction of what they actually paid.

Tickets to the festival, which promised rare Pokémon encounters, special challenges and exclusive rewards, sold out in just minutes last month.

Many were then listed for resale on sites like eBay for as high as $400.

Despite the connectivity issues, the festival was scheduled to continue as planned while the engineering team worked on a fix, Quigley said.

Female Super Heroes Make Mark at Comic-Con

For years, names like Superman, Spiderman, Batman and Ironman have dominated Comic Con, but some fans are saying this is the year of the woman.

This year you couldn’t walk through the convention center without seeing a Wonder Woman or Wonder Girl.

“Oh Wonder Woman, she's my favorite,” A couple of super heroes in training told NBC 7. “ I like her cause she's so independent and fights for what she wants."

At this year’s Comic-Con, these superwomen say they've noticed more female-focused panels, especially on this last final day.

“Finally they're having women [at the] forefront, powerful, kicking guys butts!” a Catwoman clad attendee, Meg Kelly, exclaims.

These female forces are a nice change in such a male-dominated industry, says attendee Kelly Thomas.

“I've really struggled to find comics that they're in,” she says. “There's just not a lot of female leads that aren't hypersexualized, and I don't like that."

The convention has taken heat in the past after some cosplayers raised concerns over sexual harassment.

Comic Con says it has gone to great lengths to create a safe and welcoming environment for all attendees with its large security and police presence, and panels titled "Women of Marvel," “Raising Heroic Girls,” and “Comics Arts Conference #15: Fangirls” add a sense of inclusion.

“It's exciting being a woman, being a nerd loving this environment. It makes you feel a lot more welcome,” Kelly agrees.

The trend is showing at the box office, too. This summer’s "Wonder Woman" blockbuster broke the record as the highest grossing live action film directed by a woman.

Comic-Con officially ended Sunday and will return July 18th, 2018 – hopefully with a lot of girl power.

Marine Veteran Who Lost Leg Climbs to Help Disabled, Veterans

Kionte Storey is on a journey to change lives after his life was forever changed seven years ago.

The Marine veteran was serving in Afghanistan when he lost his right leg below the knee to an improvised explosive device. He says he can handle the physical adjustment pretty well, but “it's more of a mental struggle. That's really the hardest battle of all,” he says.

He attempted to make the U.S. Paralympics team twice as a sprinter, but when he came up short Storey found a new passion during a climb on Antarctica -climbing. “That was that mental breakthrough, at least for me being on that mountain was just [an] incredible experience overall.”

Storey is now in Ecuador preparing to make a 19,000-foot climb to the top of Cayambe volcano with an organization called Range of Motion Project (ROMP). The non-profit organization provides prosthetics and orthopedic care for people in underserved countries.

NBC 7 caught up with Storey on Cowles Mountain before he left for his healing journey. He was carrying a 40-pound backpack to help him cope with the effects of altitude during his South American climb.

But it’s not the only weight Kionte Storey carries with him, a weight he says he used to propel him up the mountain. “The way I got to the summit was just thinking about my friends we lost overseas during our deployment," he explains. “Knowing why you're out there is really going to get you to the top."

Storey has raised $4,200 for the Ecuador climb, which will help 10 people get prosthetic care. But his trek is just the beginning.

The Marine veteran’s next quest will be to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to benefit veterans with traumatic brains injuries through the Bob Woodruff Foundation. His attitude about his new found purpose is as inspiring as his determination to overcome his challenges, “For me, it's just… providing as much happiness to others as I can.”

World's Oldest-Known Manatee Dies in 'Heartbreaking Accident'

Snooty, the world’s oldest known manatee, died just a day after celebrating his 69th birthday in what the South Florida Museum called a "heartbreaking accident."

The museum in Bradenton made the announcement Sunday afternoon in a statement on its website and in social media postings.

“Our initial findings indicate that Snooty’s death was a heartbreaking accident and we’re all quite devastated about his passing,” museum CEO Brynne Anne Besio said in the statement.

Besio added that the museum staff members "deeply mourn his passing."

Early indications show that an underwater door leading to a plumbing area, which is normally bolted shut, had been dislodged. Snooty was able to swim in but was not able to get out.

The animal was no longer alive when workers got to him. Three other, smaller manatees that also swam in were able to swim out.

Officials are investigating the exact circumstances of Snooty's death and how the door opened. The museum's aquarium remained closed on Sunday.

A necropsy, or an animal autopsy, will be performed at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Marine Mammal Pathobiology Laboratory in St. Petersburg.

Snooty, according to the museum, was born July 21, 1948, and was the first manatee born in captivity. He became the mascot of Florida's Manatee County in 1979 and welcomed more than a million visitors in his lifetime.

Snooty also participated in scientific research programs that studied manatee biology and behavior.

After O.J. Simpson was granted parole in highly covered hearing Thursday, Christopher Darden recalled the personal costs he paid for being one of the Los Angeles prosecutors who tried the 1994 homicide case against the former athlete.

The former prosecutor spoke with NBC News about that famous case, saying it was "a very dangerous time" for him. Darden explained that he and his family were harassed and threatened by those who didn't agree with the prosecution.

With race at the center of the case, Darden said he knew it was "a no-win situation." And after agreeing to join the prosecution team, he said he had come to be seen as a "traitor" to his own race.

"I was in a constant state of anger," Darden said.

Jared Kushner is expected to meet with the Senate Intelligence Committee Monday and face questions about his relationships with Russian officials, NBC News reported.

President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior advisor will not be under oath during his questioning and the session will not be public.

But Kushner's participation in a meeting last year with Donald Trump Jr. and a Kremlin-linked lawyer is likely to be on the table for questioning.

The committee is investigating Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election. U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded that Moscow's covert operation was intended to damage Hillary Clinton's campaign and evolved into an attempt to help Trump win.

White House Gives Mixed Messages on Pardons

Newly-hired White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci said Sunday that President Donald Trump is "thinking about pardoning nobody" in connection with the Russia investigation, according to NBC News.

"The truth of the matter is that the president is not going to have to pardon anybody because the Russia thing is a nonsensical thing," Scarmucci said on CNN’s "State of the Union." However, on "Fox News Sunday," the communications director acknowledged that he and the president discussed pardons "last week."

Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow also told ABC's "This Week" that the president's legal team has not been researching the power to pardon. A Washington Post report last week had claimed that Trump asked his advisers about his power to pardon family members, aides and even himself.

On Saturday, Trump tweeted about his power to pardon, saying, "While all agree the U.S. President has the complete power to pardon, why think of that when only crime so far is LEAKS against us.FAKE NEWS."

This morning, San Diego city leaders will unveil a new 62-unit apartment complex in East Village for the homeless.

The six-story building will have several common areas and a community kitchen.

Residents will also have access to social services and substance abuse counseling.

The Cypress complex was developed by Affirmed Housing and financed by the San Diego Housing Commission and its partners.

Today’s grand opening comes as the San Diego city council holds a special hearing this afternoon to address possible solutions to the high cost of housing in San Diego.

Council members will go over several items that could spur affordable housing in San Diego.

The council will also consider Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s initiative to help increase housing development for low and middle income San Diegans.

Among the ideas are changing municipal codes to construct secondary units, and speeding up the permit process for new projects.

Today’s special council meeting is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in city council chambers downtown.

Fiancé of Slain Australian Woman Speaks Out

The fiancé of Justine Damond, the unarmed Australian woman killed by a police officer last week in Minneapolis after calling 911, says he keeps thinking about the circumstances of the fatal shooting "over and over."

Don Damond, who is also Australian, told Justine to call 911 and stayed on the phone with his fiancé until the police arrived. Damond was in Las Vegas at the time of his fiancé's death.

"I have played this over in my head over and over," Damond told The New York Times in his first interview since the shooting. "Why didn't I stay on the phone with her?"

Investigators are trying to figure out what went wrong on that Saturday night when Justine, a 40-year-old life coach, called police to report a possible sexual assault happening behind her home.

Officer Mohamed Noor, the officer who shot Damond, and his partner, Officer Matthew Harrity, did not have their body cameras on. Harrity said that he was startled by a loud noise before the shooting, The Associated Press reported. Noor has remained silent amid outcry over the case, having yet to speak with investigators.

Minneapolis police Chief Janee Harteau resigned on Friday at the request of Mayor Betsy Hodges in the aftermath of the shooting.

"I've decided I am willing to step aside to let a fresh set of leadership eyes see what more can be done for the MPD to be the very best it can be," Harteau said in a statement on Friday.
