Abu Dhabi, Etihad Airways Dropped From Laptop Ban List

Passengers flying from Abu Dhabi International Airport on U.S.-bound flights are now allowed to use laptop computers in airline cabins, federal officials said Sunday.

Etihad Airways, which is based in Abu Dhabi, was also removed from a list that banned passengers flying on nine airlines and using 10 airports from bringing any device larger than a cellphone into airplane cabins, the Transportation Safety Administration said in a statement.

The still-restricted airports and airlines are in Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Morocco, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

The Department of Homeland Security scuttled plans last month to impose similar restrictions on U.S.-bound flights from Europe — a move that Alexandre de Juniac, director general and chief executive of the International Air Transport Association, had said could produce "a $1.4 billion hit on productivity."

A Cessna jet that took off from Chicago early Saturday morning crashed in northern Wisconsin, killing six people on board, police said.

Two of the victims were identified on Saturday night as Bensenville School District employees, according to NBC 5. Charles Tomlitz, a P.E. teacher at Tioga Elementary, and Thomas DeMauro, a maintenance director with the district, were among the six killed when the plane crashed at approximately 3:21 a.m. Saturday morning.

According to a statement issued by DeMauro's family, Thomas' son Kyle was also on the plane.

"The DeMauro family would like to express our gratitude for the outpouring of support after the tragic loss of Tom and Kyle," the statement read. "We deeply mourn their loss and both will be dearly missed. We would especially like to extend our gratitude to the first responders and community of Price County, Wisconsin, and our family and friends in Bensenville as we struggle to process this unfortunate loss."

Funeral services for Thomas and Kyle DeMauro will be determined at a later date, the family announced.

"Very sad news, my condolences to the families of these men," former Bensenville student Tanya Scheibe said on Facebook. "I have great memories of classes with Mr. DeMauro. I wish everyone well during this difficult time."

The crash occurred near the city of Phillips, the Price County Sheriff's Office said. The plane had left from Chicago and was heading to Canada on a fishing trip, according to the sheriff's office.

Police could not release the identities of the remaining four victims until families were notified, Price County Sheriff Brian Schmidt told NBC-affiliate WFJW. The sheriff did confirm that all six victims of the crash were adults.

The NTSB and FAA are investigating the crash, WFJW reported. Debris from the plane scattered around a quarter-mile radius from the crash site, and anyone who finds debris is encouraged to call police.

Crowd Calls for Trump's Impeachment at March in SF

Scores of people on Sunday flocked to San Francisco demanding that Congress boot President Donald Trump from the White House.

Local independent activists organized the "Impeachment March," which began at Justin Herman Plaza and continued through city streets, with eyes set on furthering the anti-Trump movement.

"He's got to go," march participant Gary Shaller said. "I'm raising daughters. I work in health care. I have a lot of patients to take care of. It's an unhealthy presidency for a very sick country and we need somebody to make it better."

During the march, a continually-growing crowd of people, including those flashing "Impeach Trump" signs pinned to their T-shirts or backpacks, could be heard chanting, "What do we want? Impeachment. When do we want it? Now." Echoes of "No ban, no wall, no way, no fascist USA" also rang out among the demonstrators.

Week after week, anti-Trump demonstrations of varying degrees continue to pop up across the country as people voice heated opposition to the policies and behavior flowing from the Trump administration. Those speaking out say they won't be silenced.

"Every single thing that comes out of this president's mouth, every action he takes is contrary to what I believe, and frankly I've had enough," San Francisco march attendee Mark Ransdell said.

The march comes on the same day President Trump tweeted a mock video of himself beating up World Wrestling Entertainment CEO Vince McMahon, but in the video a CNN logo replaces McMahon's face.

The tweet did not sit well with many of the marchers taking action in the city by the bay.

"It's appalling," Kristen Cato said. "Our freedom of speech, our freedom of press is seriously being jeopardized right now."

Roughly 1,100 people noted on Facebook that they would participate in the San Francisco march, which appeared to stay peaceful during its duration. An official count of event attendees is not yet known at this time.

San Diegans Cry for Donald Trump's Impeachment

Hundreds of San Diegans came out to Downtown San Diego on Sunday to call for President Donald Trump's impeachment, saying the president was a dangerous man who abuses his power.

Protesters gathered along the Embarcadero just before noon Sunday and marched Downtown, carrying signs and chanting.

From his campaign's ties to Russia to his "unpresidential behavior," opponents say Trump is bad for the country.

"What Trump has been doing all along has been hiding the truth," said Madeleine Falco, a Little Italy resident. "This is not a transparent president, his cabinet is not transparent."

Falco said that for her, it's about the lack of trust she has in the administration.

"The American people know this man cannot be trusted," Falco said.

Michelle Roberts, an El Cajon resident, came out to protest a president who she thought was abusing his power.

"He's colluded, he's obstructing justice, he's abusing power," Roberts said. "I want him gone."

Other protesters, like Marianne Johnson, a San Carlos resident, said they believed Trump was a dangerous person to have in office.

"This man is dangerous, this man is unconstitutional, he's got to go," she said.

Trump supporters also attended the rally, bringing signs saying "Build the wall, Enforce the law!" The supporters came out in smaller numbers but were just as outspoken.

"More people support him than are willing to say," one supporter said.

From cracking down on illegal immigration to the travel ban on 6 Muslim-majority countries, supporters say the president is on the right track.

He may not always be presidential, but these supporters say that's okay.

"That's why he got elected," another supporter said. "People are tired of these measured speakers, these drones who have speeches written by committees, they don't want that."

Organizers say San Diego's rally attendance ranked second, after Los Angeles' attendance.

Woman Finds Home in Flames After Bizarre Road Rage Incident

A Lakeside family is devastated after flames tore through a nearby business and spread to their home following a bizarre road rage incident.

The Solis Hair Studio and the home next to the salon burst into flames Saturday afternoon when a car involved in a road rage incident slammed into the business.

The driver reportedly lost control after trying to cut off a driver trying to exit on their way to the Sheriff's substation in Lakeside, Sheriff's officials said.

The car trying to cut off the driver slammed into the salon around 6:50 p.m., located at the intersection of Vine Street and Parkside Street in Lakeside.

Lavonne Krause lives at the home next to the destroyed salon. She said her son first heard the crash.

"My son was here asleep and he heard a loud crash and came out and saw a ball of fire under the car that hit the building," Krause said.

The building quickly caught flames. The blaze spread from the salon to Krause's home. Krause described how it felt to come home and see the flames.

"Devastated," she said, in tears. "This is my home. It's my home. I knew I wasn't gonna be able to be here."

Neighbors say a pregnant woman worked at the salon, and children are always playing in the area, making it that much more amazing that no one was seriously hurt.

"The girl who works here was excited about working here she could bring her new baby to the salon here, and that's not going to happen now," Krause said.

During this overwhelming moment in her life, Krause appreciates the support she has received from friends and family.

"I'm grateful, in a strange situation like this, I'm actually grateful," she said.

The road rage incident was believed to be connected to a subsequent pursuit. At this time, authorities do not believe the pursuit is connected

The USO San Diego is asking people to Flex 4 Forces.

The social media campaign is “very simple” says Ashley Camac, director of the USO San Diego downtown center. “[It’s] just to raise awareness and show the troops overseas that we’re supporting them.”

The nationwide campaign hopes to show service members on the front lines that there is strength in numbers and their country stands with them.

I think sometimes [an overseas] service member can feel disconnected,” Camac explains. “[But] when they can see their country is supporting their efforts, it makes a huge difference in their mind.”

The effort has garnered celebrity attention from people like Brett Favre, Tim McGraw, Garth Brooks, Katharine McPhee and even the Rockettes.

“I think it’s always just an amazing feeling when you can see that what you’re doing and the work you’re doing to protect the lives of Americans that the…people in this country are showing that support right back,” Camac tells NBC 7.

Man, Friends Attacked by Tijuana Taxi Drivers for Using Uber

Eric Ivarra’s night started out great. He went to the Padres game with four friends then was on his way to Tijuana to stay with one of them.

When they crossed the border they ordered an Uber – and that’s when their trouble started. He said taxi drivers started to surround them, telling them they were in a taxi zone.

“My friends told them no thanks we already ordered Uber,” Ivarra said. “At the beginning, there was just five to seven drivers, and then I turned my head to the left and I start seeing more taxi drivers coming out from the parking [lot].”

He said he turned his back, “and I was totally knocked out.”

He and his friends were attacked and left bloodied on the street.

“I can't even breathe,” he said. “I have to breathe through my mouth. And my arms hurt a lot.”

Ivarra told NBC 7 his nose is broken in three places and he suffered a dislocated and broken shoulder. Another friend of his needed 10 stitches; Others had bruises and black eyes.

Ivarra said he believes the taxi drivers attacked them because they were using Uber. He lives in Chula Vista and crosses the border about once a week, but he's never had this problem before. And he definitely didn’t plan on spending the Fourth of July holiday in a Tijuana hospital.

“I had my plans to make hot dogs and burgers in front of my uncle's house in Chula Vista,” he said.

Instead his uncle visited him in the hospital Sunday. Ivarra is an architect, and he'll have to miss a month of work at least.

He’ll also have to have several surgeries and physical therapy appointments as part of his recovery.

Mexican authorities announced on Facebook Sunday that they arrested three yellow taxi employees for harassing riders in incidents similar to what happened to Ivarra. He told NBC 7 none of those men were involved in his incident. NBC 7 put in calls on the status of his investigation, but have not yet heard back.

Minimum Wages Increase in Many Cities With New Fiscal Year

Higher minimum wages are going into effect this week in cities across the country as the new fiscal year gets under way, NBC News reported.

In California, for example, the statewide minimum wage is $10 per hour. Los Angeles increased its minimum wage to $10.50 for small businesses and from $10.50 to $12 for businesses with 26 or more employees.

"We still have a long way to go before all workers can get a fair day's pay," Alexandra Suh, executive director of the Koreatown Immigrant Workers Alliance in Los Angeles, told NBC Los Angeles.

In Chicago, workers will get at least $1.75 above the Illinois minimum wage of $8.25 per hour.

Meanwhile, St. Louis' minimum wage could actually drop by as much as $2.30 to the state minimum wage of $7.70, as Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens said he wouldn't stop a bill repealing St. Louis' $10-an-hour minimum.

Four people have been arrested and are now behind bars as police investigate the kidnapping and death of 13-year-old Shavon Randle. The body of another man, 19-year-old Michael Titus, was found in the same abandoned Dallas home.

In an arrest affidavit, investigators say a family member of Shavon Randle was dating a man who stole drugs from two people.

The affidavit goes on to detail that those two people were Devontae Owens and Darius Fields, and they kidnapped Randle in retaliation for the drug theft.

Cellphone analysis placed Owens near Shavon's home in Lancaster, about 15 miles south of Dallas.

Owens' and Shavon's phones had traveled in the same direction until Shavon's phone was shut off, the affidavit said.

Devontae Owens, 24, is currently being held in the Dallas County Jail on aggravated kidnapping charges. He was named as a person of interest on Friday.

Laquon Wilkerson, 30, was moved from the Tri Cities Jail in Desoto to the Dallas County Jail. He's being held on aggravated kidnapping charges. He was identified as a person of interest as well, and arrested by the FBI on Saturday.

Darius Fields, 26, is currently being held in the City of Irving Jail. He was identified as a person of interest on Friday, but is being held on charges unrelated to the kidnapping of Shavon Randle.

Michael Titus, 19, was identified as a person of interest in the kidnapping of Shavon Randle on Friday. His body was found inside the abandoned home in Dallas where Randle's body was found Sunday morning.

Laporshya Polley, 25, is currently being held in the City of Irving Jail. She was also identified as a person of interest on Friday, but is also being held on charges unrelated to the kidnapping of Shavon Randle.

It's not immediately clear if the four being held had attorneys.

Ice Bucket Challenge Originator Back in Hospital

The originator of the famous Ice Bucket Challenge, Pete Frates, is back in the hospital and still alive despite a false report otherwise.

Frates, who has raised millions for Lou Gehrig's disease research, tweeted a video Monday showing himself in a hospital bed as the Pearl Jam song "Alive" plays in the background.

"In the words of my friend ed," he tweeted, in a reference to Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder.

[[432272243, C]]

The tweet came after journalist and commentator Mike Barnicle had incorrectly tweeted that Frates had died. He later said a family friend had given him bad information and he was "doubly wrong to tweet it."

On Sunday, Frates' mother Nancy shared a post on the Team FrateTrain Facebook page asking that supporters keep Frates in their prayers while he battles "this ALS like a Superhero."

[[432117233, C]]

On Monday morning, she shared another Facebook post saying Frates was resting comfortably.

[[432252923, C]]

Frates, 32, was diagnosed with ALS in March 2012, at the age of 27. Since his diagnosis, the entire Frates family has taken an active role in raising awareness and funds for ALS research.

There is no known cure for ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord and weakens muscles. The disease affects about 20,000 Americans.

Frates' Ice Bucket Challenge helped raise $220 million to fight the disease since the campaign took off on social media in 2014, The Associated Press reported.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh was among those tweeting a show of support for Frates.

Pols Blast Christie Beach Day as 'Disgraceful' Amid Shutdown

While many are forced to celebrate the holiday weekend by traveling to other public beaches, Gov. Chris Christie is catching some rays at a state beach that's closed to everyone else due to the government shutdown.

On the second day of the shutdown that Christie ordered, which affects state courts, parks and beaches, he was found sunbathing with his family Sunday at Island Beach State Park at Berkeley Township, according to a report by NJ.com.

[[432179003, C]]

Christie was staying at a summer beach house there provided by the state, and said so during a press conference Saturday.

As people took to social media to vent about the unfairness of the entitlement, Christie told reporters Saturday, "Run for governor, and you can have a residence there," said the report.

[[238427591, C]]

His lieutenant governor -- who is the Republican nominee for governor in this year's election -- blasted him Monday morning.

"If I were governor, I sure wouldn’t be sitting on the beach if taxpayers didn’t have access to state beaches. It's beyond words," Kim Guadagno said in a Facebook post. She called on Christie and legislative leaders to stop playing "political games" and pass a budget.

Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop called the photo of Christie at the beach "disgraceful" and said it shows he's a "lame duck."

The governor ordered a special session Monday as the shutdown stretched into a third day. Fulop said even if lawmakers managed to reach an agreement on the health insurance bill in the budget, it would be too late to resurrect Fourth of July plans that had to be canned because of the impasse.

[[374756761, C]]

In a TV interview Monday, Christie mocked the Star-Ledger newspaper for the beach photos and its splashy front-page follow-up story.

"They actually caught a politician being where he was going to be with the people he said he was going to be with, his wife and his children and their friends. So I’m sure they’re going to get a Pulitzer Prize for this one because they actually proved they caught me doing what I said to do with the people I said I was going to be with," Christie said, according to a transcript of the interview distributed by his office.

Room Where Jefferson’s Mistress Sally Hemings Lived Is Found

Archeologists have excavated an area of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello mansion that is believed to be the living quarters of Sally Hemings, the enslaved mistress of the nation's third president who gave birth to six of Jefferson's children, NBCBLK reported.

"Some of Sally’s children may have been born in this room,” said Gardiner Hallock, director of restoration for Jefferson’s Virginia mountaintop plantation. “It’s important because it shows Sally as a human being — a mother, daughter, and sister — and brings out the relationships in her life.”

Hemings' room — 14 feet, 8 inches wide and 13 feet long — went unnoticed for decades. The space was converted into a men’s bathroom in 1941, considered by some as the final insult to Hemings’ legacy.

Physical evidence shows that Hemings probably lived a higher-level lifestyle than other enslaved people on Jefferson’s plantation. Still, her room had no windows and would have been dark, damp and uncomfortable.

A portion of Big Sur which has been cut off since February by a collapsed bridge and a massive landslide is accessible again.

The San Jose Mercury News reported a public hiking trail that links visitors to popular tourist attractions in south Big Sur opened on Saturday.

A daily shuttle takes visitors to the half-mile trail, which was initially built for locals to circumvent the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge after it was badly damaged by winter storms and had to be demolished.

It was narrow, rugged and slippery but recent upgrades to make the trail safer now allows visitors to reach the isolated stretch of Big Sur.

Kirk Gafill, the president of the Big Sur Chamber of Commerce, estimates the area has been losing $300,000 in revenues every day.
