Surveillance Photo Renews Hope of Finding 85-Year-Old Man

Search efforts intensify for an 85-year-old man in Scripps Ranch, missing since last Thursday after a surveillance image gives some clues to where he may have gone.

Taiheng Sun suffers from Alzheimer's and he speaks very little English.

He was last seen at his home around 7 a.m. on the 15000 block of Maple Grove Lane Thursday. When his family returned home after 7:32 p.m. that day, he was gone.

A photo, captured by a surveillance camera on top of a utility pole, shows Sun walking alone into the West Sycamore Staging Area of Mission Trails Regional Park around 8:35 a.m.

The image shows him wearing a blue long-sleeved shirt, a dark blue hat, gray pants, and carrying what appears to be a white windbreaker. These were the exact clothes he was reported missing in, according to San Diego police (SDPD).

As a heat wave scorches San Diego County, the search for Sun has intensified.

The photo, released Tuesday, renewed the hopes of family and community members.

"I'm not giving up hope on anything. I do believe there is hope," said neighbor Gina Manos. "We can find him."

Volunteers hope to narrow the search. Organizers are asking drone operators who are available to assist in the search.

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick has resigned his post at the ride-hailing app company, NBC News confirmed early Wednesday.

Kalanick's exit came under pressure from investors, according to a report from the New York Times, which first reported the departure. He will remain on the San Francisco-based company's board of directors.

Kalanick told employees a week ago that he was taking a leave of absence from the company, following the release of a highly anticipated report on Uber's workplace culture. Uber had been facing growing allegations of sexual harassment and workplace misconduct.

The former CEO had said his break, NBC News reported, was to help his company move forward from what he called one of the toughest periods since its start in 2009.

The family of Charleena Lyles is demanding an explanation for how the pregnant Seattle mother of four was shot dead by the same cops she had called for help, NBC News reported.

"We're still trying to wrap our heads around why she was murdered," Tiffany Rogers, Lyles' younger sister, told NBC News while on her way to a rally at the scene of the death.

Family members have questioned why police didn't use a non-lethal option despite knowing that Lyles had been suffering from mental health issues, family attorney James Bible said Tuesday.

But Seattle police Detective Patrick Michaud said Tuesday that both officers, whom Lyles had called to her home for a possible burglary before allegedly threatening officers with a knife, had undergone training to work with people showing signs of mental illness.

Desert Breaks Highest All-Time Record for County

San Diego could see record-breaking heat on the first official day of summer, and the tail end of a five-day heat wave baking the County.

The day before San Diego's first day of summer, Ocotillo Wells, a desert city in the County, hit an all-time high of 124 degrees, breaking the all-time San Diego County high of 122, set in 2016.

“To put it into perspective, the highest temperature ever recorded anywhere on earth is Death Valley, at 134,” said NBC 7 Meteorologist Jodi Kodesh. “So, we were only 10 degrees shy of the hottest temperature ever recorded on earth.”

The National Weather Service (NWS) San Diego said a heat advisory remains in effect for San Diego’s inland valleys and foothills – including Santee, El Cajon, and Escondido – through 9 p.m. Wednesday. In those areas, temperatures are expected to hit between 95 and 103 degrees.

“You have to take extra precaution to stay cool and really evaluate, throughout the day that you are taking care of yourself – drinking lots of water; frequent breaks in the shade if you have to be outside,” said NBC 7 meteorologist Jodi Kodesh.

The NWS said an excessive heat warning is also in effect in San Diego’s deserts, including Borrego Springs and Banning, through 9 p.m. Sunday. Temperatures are forecasted to hit 112 to 119 on Thursday.

Along the coast, however, temperatures will be significantly cooler, offering some respite from the heat wave.

“There will be a drastic difference between the coast, and the rest of the county,” said Kodesh. “Beaches will have morning clouds, that may linger, so highs will only be 67-78 degrees. Inland areas will range from 95 to 100, with deserts soaring to 118.”

San Diegans can expect the tail end of this five-day heat wave to make its way out by Thursday.

By Thursday, inland temperatures will decrease a bit – to around 87 degrees. Same goes for Friday before a slight increase in temperatures for the weekend.

Heat-related illness is common under these conditions. Strenuous outdoor activities should be avoided or rescheduled to early morning or evening hours. People should drink plenty of water and wear light and loose-fitting clothing. Kids and pets should never be left unattended in hot cars, as car interiors can reach lethal temperatures within minutes amid heat waves like this.

With more residents expected to use their air conditioning systems at home to beat the heat, the California Independent System Operation Corporation (ISO), the state's power grid operator, has issued a statewide Flex Alert asking residents to voluntarily conserve electricity amid the heat wave. The Flex Alert is in effect between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

California Governor Jerry Brown has ordered flags across the state to be lowered to half-staff in honor of the two San Diego sailors killed in the USS Fitzgerald collision.

Fire Controlman 2nd Class Carlos Victor Ganzon Sibayan, 23, of Chula Vista, and Yeoman 3rd Class, Shingo Alexander Douglass, 25, of San Diego, were identified as two of the seven killed when the destroyer collided with a cargo ship off the coast of Japan this past weekend.

"On behalf of all Californians, Governor Brown and First Lady Anne Gust Brown honor Fire Controlman 2nd Class Carlos Victor Ganzon Sibayan and Yeoman 3rd Class Shingo Alexander Douglass, who bravely gave their lives in service to our state and nation," a statement from Brown's office read. "The Governor and First Lady extend their deepest condolences to their families and friends at this difficult time."

The seven bodies were recovered from flooded berths inside the after initially being reported missing.

Sibayan was less than a month from returning home when he died. The 23-year-old had been in the Navy for four years and spent three of those years in Japan.

His mother, Carmen, told NBC 7 that her son was her hero, and she could not be more proud of him.

“If you never met my son, you missed a whole lot,” she said. “In every sense of the word, he is my hero.”

Douglass' family released a statement saying they would miss their beloved brother, son, and friend, immensely.

"We loved him very much and his parents and younger brother will miss him more than words can express," said the family.

His family remembered him as an adventurous young man who was proud of his Japanese and military family background.

He was "thrilled" to go back to Japan in 2014, while reporting for duty to USS Fitzgerald, said the statement. He proudly served his nation.

"He loved to travel, was a certified scuba diver and a Black Belt in karate and played tennis," the family said in a statement. "He was also an avid gamer, studied computer game design and loved to attend Comic Con."

The collision is under investigation.

Man Falls 200 Feet Into Hillcrest Canyon

San Diego Fire-Rescue (SDFD) crews helped rescue a man who fell 200 feet into a Hillcrest canyon early Wednesday morning.

San Diego police first responded to a report of a possible burglary at approximately 3:21 a.m. on the 3500 block of Albatross Street in Hillcrest.

At the same time, they said, they got a call about a man who fell down a canyon. Officials said the man ran toward the canyon and fell off a ledge.

It is unclear if police believe the man who fell into the canyon was a suspect in a crime.

Fire-Rescue crews and medics were called to the scene and began the long process of rescuing him.

Because he was so far down in the canyon, officials had to perform a low-angle rescue. Crews could not use a helicopter, like they might in these circumstances, because of the terrain.

Firefighters had to climb down to rescue him.

Police said the man had an injured knee and was not cooperative with officers.

Sewage is flowing at a rate of 90 gallons per minute into Border Field State Park's Yogurt Canyon, the Department of Environmental Health said.

The ongoing sewage spill has not been capped. The Department has not released when the spill started.

Border Field State Park lies along the U.S-Mexico border in Imperial Beach, south of Downtown San Diego.

The access road to Friendship Park, within the park, may also be affected by sewage-filled runoff, the department said. Officials recommend avoiding the area.

Warning signs have been posted in the area, telling visitors and locals to avoid contact with contaminated water.

In February, more than an estimated 28 million gallons of sewage spilled into the Tijuana River and U.S. waters, near Border Field State Park, after a pipe collapsed in Tijuana.

For more information on the Tijuana River, please call the U.S. International Boundary & Water Commission at 619-662-7600.

A 15-year-old student was stabbed by a fellow student at Ramona High School two weeks ago, San Diego County Sheriff's officials said Tuesday.

The stabbing happened at approximately 11:40 a.m. on June 6 at the school, located at 1401 Hanson Lane.

Deputies first responded to the school after school officials notified law enforcement officials of the stabbing.

A 15-year-old student was found stabbed in front of the school, deputies said. Paramedics treated the victim at the scene and later took him to a local hospital for further treatment.

The suspect, a 16-year-old male, is a fellow student at the school, deputies said.

Their initial investigation revealed that the pair knew each other prior to the incident and were both attending summer classes. At some point during the day, the two got into a physical altercation and the 16-year-old stabbed the victim. The 16-year-old then walked away.

Deputies later found the suspect at the scene and took him home.

Sheriff's officials say the incident appears to be isolated and there is no danger to anyone attending summer classes.

The Sheriff's Department is working closely with school staff to investigate the incident. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the San Diego Sheriff's Department at (858) 565-5200.

Aaron Tyler Trainor, 24, of San Diego, was behind the wheel of his car on Monday as he drove from Genesee Avenue in Clairemont onto the eastbound State Route 52 on-ramp at a high rate of speed, according to the Medical Examiner's office.

Trainor, who lives in Clairemont with his father and uncle, tried to turn onto the on-ramp; however, he failed to negotiate the sharp turn correctly, the ME's office said.

June 20 Declared Steve Fisher Day for Legendary Aztecs Coach

A special day has been chosen to honor Steve Fisher, the legendary Aztecs coach celebrated for his salvation of basketball in San Diego County.

Fisher turned San Diego State into a nationally-ranked basketball program and annual NCAA Tournament participant.

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors announced Wednesday that June 20 will be declared Steve Fisher Day throughout San Diego County, with the recommendation of Supervisor Ron Roberts.

Chairwoman Dianne Jacob and the San Diego County Board of Supervisors have commended the coach for his 50-year career as a basketball coach and 18 incredible years of victories at San Diego State University (SDSU).

When he arrived on campus at SDSU before the 1992 season, he walked around handing out free tickets trying to get anyone he could to the arena to see his team.

"Speaking of packed houses, Coach Fisher's winning ways resulted in 85 straight regular-season crowds of at least 11,000 fans, and even last season had the Aztecs leading the state of California in average home attendance," stated county officials.

In his 18 years at SDSU, Coach Fisher turned a program that suffered through 13 losing seasons into one that featured a string of star teams, said county officials. The teams became known on the national stage for their tenacious and gritty techniques.

Regardless of where the games were played, his players displayed pressing athletic style and unrelenting confidence, said county officials.

In San Diego, Fisher-led teams enjoyed 386 victories. That compelled the Aztecs to make 13 trips to the postseason, including the 2011 and 2014 teams that made memorable runs to the Sweet 16, said county officials.

He was named the National Coach of the Year in April 2011, the highest honor a college basketball coach can earn.

A few years later in 2014, the team took basketball experts by surprise, when they captured the league championship by coming back from 16 points behind in the second half to defeat New Mexico, said county officials.

Fisher also won the Legend of Coaching award in 2015.

After 18 years of launching San Diego into the most thrilling basketball program ever known to the region, Coach Steve Fisher has chosen to retire as a coach, although he has agreed to remain at SDSU as a university ambassador.

City of San Diego Expands Curbside Recycling

The City of San Diego is expanding its curbside recycling program within city limits, adding polystyrene food service containers to the lineup.

“By expanding what we’re able to recycle, we’re moving in the right direction as we try to reduce, reuse and recycle as much of the trash we collect every day as we can,” said Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer said in a statement.

The additional materials - usually referred to as Styrofoam - includes cups and food containers. The change is effective July 1, 2017.

The move is a part of the City's "Zero Waste" plan. By 2040, the City of San Diego hopes to reuse, instead of throwing away, the City's trash.

Adding items to the City's recycling lineup helps put the City closer to that goal.

“After several years of hard work and analysis, City residents are finally able to conveniently recycle Styrofoam materials. This action will not only improve our local environment but also prolong the life of the Miramar Landfill. I applaud the Mayor and ESD staff for making this vision a reality,” said City Councilmember Scott Sherman, a member of the Council’s Environment Committee, in a statement.

Residents can continue to recycle their cardboard, paper, newspapers, metal containers, plastic and glass bottles, and more.

For more information about recycling programs in San Diego, including details about the City’s efforts to divert waste from the Miramar Landfill, click here.
