A father of five struck and killed by a suspected DUI driver as he was jogging was remembered as a loving stay-at-home dad, devoted to his family.

Nanglee Vang, 40, was out for a jog with his wife Friday evening along the 1500 block of South Melrose and Shadowridge Drives in Vista when the driver, traveling at a high rate of speed, lost control of his car and jumped the curb.

The vehicle plowed into both of the joggers then struck a light pole and came to a halt.

Nanglee, a stay-at-home father, was killed the day before his birthday. The crash left his wife hospitalized. She suffered a broken collarbone, broken ribs, a head wound and a punctured lung.

Nanglee was father to five kids, aged two to 16.

A family member told NBC 7 that Nanglee pushed his wife out of the way and took the brunt of the fatal impact.

Deputies said alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the deadly crash.

The family has set up a GoFundMe to help with medical and funeral expenses. To donate, click here.

In the exclusive inaugural episode of "Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly", NBC News' Megyn Kelly posed questions to Russian President Vladimir Putin on whether the Russian government interfere in the U.S. election.

"Put your finger anywhere on a map of the world, and everywhere you will hear complaints that American officials are interfering in internal electoral processes," Putin said.

Kelly pushed back at the assertion, saying it sounded like Putin's attempt to justify his government's attempts to influence elections.

Putin claimed that Russia has a preference in an election but only reacts to the "political direction" that the United States seems to be heading in.

"It wouldn't make sense for us to interfere," he said.

A teenage cheerleader whose medical history included intermittent asthma, seasonal allergies and acne died unexpectedly two days after being diagnosed with the flu last April.

Jenifer Wood, of Descanso, went home early from Granite Hills High School on April 4th, telling her mother she had a sore throat and it hurt when she coughed. She was also wheezing and tired.

Her mother took her to the San Diego Naval Medical Center and the Children’s Primary Care Medical Group where she was diagnosed with Influenza B and laryngitis. She was prescribed several medications, and doctors advised her to stay home from school until her fever was gone.

Wood stayed home the next day and took an Ibuprofen before going to bed that night. Late into the night Wood, who had a 102-degree fever and nausea, started coughing up blood, according to the medical examiner’s report. Her mother called the hospital, but a nurse said a minimal amount of blood in phlegm is normal and to keep checking on her.

The next morning Wood, while coughing, went to use the bathroom. She collapsed twice and told her mother she was too weak to stand. Then she collapsed again and became unresponsive.

Her parents called 911 and performed CPR, and Wood was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead after first responders performed CPR.

She didn’t smoke or do drugs and was seen as generally healthy. She died of natural causes, according to the ME report.

Approximately 36,000 people die from the flu each year in the U.S., according to Harvard Health.

Wood's family held a fundraiser on May 20th to raise money to create a scholarship in her name. A Gofundme page has been set up for the scholarship.

"We grieve the loss of our beautiful, loving daughter and sister," a spokesperson for the Archibald family said Sunday. "She would have had no understanding of the callous cruelty that caused her death. Please honor her by making your community a better place. Volunteer your time and labor or donate to a homeless shelter. Tell them Chrissy sent you."

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was "heartbroken" by Archibald's death.

Students Get Harvard Offer Rescinded Over Facebook Posts

Harvard College has rescinded admissions offers to at least 10 prospective students after they posted offensive photos and messages on social media.

The Harvard Crimson reports a number students admitted to the Class of 2021 started a private Facebook messaging group for incoming Freshman titled "Harvard memes for horny bourgeois teens."

Students in the group allegedly posted and shared messages joking about the Holocaust, mocking sexual assault and the abuse of children. The messages also allegedly targeted racial and ethic groups, according to the Crimson. One alleged meme called the imaginary hanging of a Mexican child "piñata time."

After learning of the group's existence and its contents in April, at least 10 members of the group chat received letters informing them that their offers of admission had been reversed.  The decision to rescind a student's offer is final, university officials previously told the Crimson.

Harvard spokeswoman Rachael Dane told the Crimson Saturday that the school doesn't "comment publicly on the admissions status of individual applicants."

The chat was an offshoot of the official Harvard Class of 2021 Facebook group, a 100-member messaging group that admitted students launched to share memes about pop culture.

According to one student, some members suggested forming a "more R-rated" meme chat. Cassandra Luca told the Crimson that founders of the "dark" group chat demanded that students post provocative memes in the original messaging group before allowing them to join the splinter group.

New Smart Speaker Expected as Apple Kicks Off Conference

Apple appears poised to unveil a voice-activated, internet-connected speaker that would create a new digital pipeline into people's homes.

Tapping Apple's Siri digital assistant, such a speaker is expected to serve as a butler as well as an outlet for listening to music. If the speculation pans out, the speaker would be Apple's first new product since its smartwatch in 2015. And it would mark an effort by Apple to catch up with Amazon and Google.

An early glimpse at updates to iPhone and Mac software has become a tradition at Apple's annual conference for app developers, which begins Monday in San Jose, California. But Apple occasionally also uses the event to introduce new devices and services and upgrades to existing products.

Amazon introduced the Echo speaker, featuring its Alexa assistant, in 2015. Google followed with its Home speaker, featuring its plain-named Assistant, last year. Both speakers can respond to voice requests for the news, weather and tasks such as turning on the lights.

More than 35 million people in the U.S. are expected to use a voice-activated speaker at least once a month this year, more than doubling from last year, according the research firm eMarketer.

"There is so much momentum building around these speakers that it would be difficult for Apple not to come out with one," said industry analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights & Strategy.

Amazon just unveiled a version of Echo with a camera, touch-screen display and video-calling capabilities. The new Echo Show goes on sale on June 28 for $230. Google, meanwhile, previewed new speaker features such as hands-free phone calling during its software conference last month. Microsoft also has announced its own speaker with Samsung's Harman business; it will use Microsoft's Cortana digital assistant.

That leaves Apple. Although it was the first smartphone maker to come out with a digital assistant when Siri debuted in 2011, it hasn't had a stand-alone assistant. For Apple, having one would further broaden the role that its software, services and gadgets play in people's lives.

It wouldn't be the first time that Apple hopped on the bandwagon of a technology product popularized by a competitor. For instance, Apple initially resisted enlarging the size of iPhone's screen despite strong sales for larger-display phones made by Samsung and other rivals. But the company relented, and Apple's larger phones have become hot commodities as more people have embraced having a bigger display to look at pictures and watch video on the devices.

Although Siri would likely be a centerpiece of a smart speaker from Apple, Moorhead said the device's design, colors and acoustics will also likely be focal points because the company has a long history of making elegantly designed products.

The lack of a breakthrough device has periodically raised concerns that Apple has become too dependent on the iPhone and supported the theory that the company lost its knack for innovation when its co-founder Steve Jobs died of cancer in 2011. Although Apple Watch has emerged as the leader in its technological niche, it hasn't become a smash hit like the iPhone or the iPad — at least until tablet sales started declining.

On the software front, RBC Capital analyst Amit Daryanani expects the iOS 11 — the next operating system for Apple's iPhones and iPads — to get an overhaul that will accommodate the anticipated removal of the home button from the 10th anniversary model of the iPhone due out later this year. The next iOS may also have new features designed for artificial intelligence, the application of computers that learn and understand things like humans.

Apple also may introduce its next Mac computer, along with the next operating system powering the machine. Software updates are also expected for Apple's smartwatch and TV box for streaming online video. Daryanani said Apple may also announce an iPad Pro with a faster processor in an attempt to revive its long-slumping tablet sales.

The Maritime Museum of San Diego announced the Colombian tall ship Gloria, official flagship of the Colombian Navy, will be in San Diego Tuesday, June 6 – Thursday, June 8, 2017.

Gloria was built in port Cartagena, Colombia, and in 1968 she was taken to the Celeya shipyard in Spain to be built as a sail-training ship. She is 257 feet long, which makes her one of the largest tall ships afloat.

Gloria is steel hulled with polished wood and brass, four masts and a full crew of 176. The Maritime Museum says the ship is perfection that is rarely seen.

This ship is used by the Colombian government to highlight its history to foreign dignitaries. Gloria’s arrival to San Diego allows all San Diegans and visitors the chance to do the same when they step aboard.

Dockside visits aboard the Gloria are free to the public, and while she is here, visitors can also save on general admission to the Maritime Museum of San Diego.

Video Shows Man Diving Into Moving Car to Save Driver

An Illinois man is being hailed as a hero after he dove through the open window of a moving car to save the driver, who was having a seizure, in a dramatic rescue captured on police dashcam video.

Randy Tompkins, of Dixon, was in his truck Friday afternoon when he spotted a car driving toward him on the wrong side of the road, authorities said.

He noticed that the driver of the slow-moving vehicle was having a medical emergency, so the Good Samaritan jumped out of his vehicle, dove through the passenger side window of the other car and stopped it.

“We want to thank Tompkins for his heroism and for coming to a complete stranger’s aid today,” Dixon police said in a statement. [[426394771, C]]

A video posted by Dixon police on Saturday shows the blue car rolling through the stoplight and nearly hitting other vehicles at an intersection. Officers on patrol trailed the car and turned on cruiser's emergency light.

Dashcam video then shows Tompkins backing up his truck to avoid a collision before coming to the driver's aid. Tompkins is then seen bolting from the pick-up and diving into the imperiled vehicle, putting it in park.

According to The Associated Press, Tompkins put two fingers into the convulsing driver’s mouth to prevent him from swallowing his tongue.

The officers then ran up to the car and called for paramedics to assist the driver. Tompkins and the officers waited until first responders arrived at the scene and took the driver to KSB hospital.

Two Arrested in Connection With Oakland Warehouse Fire

$

Two people were arrested Monday morning on charges connected to the deadly Oakland Ghost Ship warehouse fire that killed 36 people in December, according to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.

Derick Almena, the warehouse's operator, and Max Harris, a warehouse tenant, were the ones taken into custody.

Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O'Malley is expected to announce the official filing of criminal charges at 1:00 p.m. at the Alameda County Courthouse.

Almena, 46, who friends knew as Derick Ion, was convicted in January of receiving stolen property, specifically an Airstream trailer from his landlord in January 2015, court records show. He spent two days in jail then, plead no contest to a misdemeanor, and is currently on probation until 2019.

Almena survived the fire and posted to Facebook after hearing that the converted warehouse he managed was the site of a deadly fire. The post, which has since been deleted, got a lot of attention because of its insensitivity to what was already known to be a fatal scene.

The post read as follows: "Confirmed. Everything I worked so hard for is gone. Blessed that my children and Micah were at a hotel safe and sound ... it's as if I have awoken from a dream filled with opulence and hope ... to be standing now in poverty of self worth."

The post prompted more than 2,000 comments, and many of them were critical of Almena's message. The commenters said he showed more concern for his material possessions than the people who were killed in the blaze.

Danielle Boudreaux said she became fast friends with Almena and his wife Micah Allison when they met eight years ago before a falling out about a year ago over conditions at the warehouse.

Access to the second floor, where there was a room for concerts and a home for the couple and their children, was a rickety, homemade staircase, she said.

"Calling it a staircase gives you the idea that it was a set of stairs. It was not," Boudreaux said. "It was random pieces of wood put together to create something that you could get up to the top floor on. But it was not what most people would consider a staircase. It was like a jimmy-rigged makeshift staircase. As soon as you stepped on it, it wobbled all over the place."

Other former tenants have said there were constant problems with the power and hot water. One, Shelly Mack, described "all kinds of electrical cords running through there illegally." She called it a "death trap."

Long before the fire killed 36 partygoers in Oakland’s Fruitvale district late Friday night, Oakland officials had been fighting the owners of that building over hazardous or substandard conditions at their properties.

City building inspectors never set foot inside the Ghost Ship warehouse in 30 years. But dozens of public documents obtained by the Investigative Unit reveal city officials had routinely accused the building’s owners of neglect in connection with the warehouse and other properties they own. Those records show the Ng family, who own the so-called Ghost Ship warehouse and at least a dozen other properties across the Bay Area, failed to clean up dangerous or shoddy conditions at properties over a period of more than 15 years despite code violations and complaints from neighbors.

Congress Curious About $1.8B NYC Kushner Property: Sources

If President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, appears before the Congressional committees probing alleged Russian meddling in the presidential election, he is expected to be asked about a very expensive piece of New York City real estate, NBC News reported.

Kushner may be asked whether he tried to set up a secret way of communicating with the Russians, a back channel, to find some one there to buy the 41-story tower at 666 Fifth Ave. from his family, two Congressional sources with direct knowledge of the investigation confirmed.

The Kushner real estate firm bought the building in January 2007 for $1.8 billion, then a record for a Manhattan building. But Kushner Companies has reportedly been bleeding money ever since.

A Kushner Companies spokesman declined to comment when NBC News reached out to ask whether the purpose of a reported back channel to Moscow Kushner sought was to find investors for 666 Fifth Ave.
