Members of Congress Meet Deported Veterans in Tijuana

Rep. Juan Vargas and six other members of congress met with deported veterans and their families in Mexico Saturday to raise awareness on the issue.

“It was heartbreaking again to listen to the stories,” Vargas said in a press conference. “If all Americans knew about this they would be outraged.”

Rep. Vargas introduced a Deported Veterans Bill Package a week ago that would prevent veterans from being deported and help those who have been deported get access to medical care.

The law has to change because this is a great injustice,” Vargas said in a news conference “If you’re a person from another country and you commit this crime, you get deported. They made no exception for veterans.

Hector Barajas served nearly six years in the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division before he was honorably discharged. In 2004, he was deported to Mexico after serving a prison sentence for firing a gun inside his car.

"I became more of a patriot ever since I got deported. They [veterans] did commit crimes, including myself, but that does not make me less American," said Barajas.

Barajas runs the Deported Veterans Support House in Tijuana where the congressmen met Saturday.

Saew families untied with mostly their dada. Met with families for first time “I’ve never seen them together. For me that was quite moving. I’ve seen them individually, but to see them together that’s the way they want to live. They want to live as a family.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service does offer a pathway for veteran immigrants to receive legal citizenship. They need to reapply and the National Benefits Center reviews each case.

"This is an opportunity for Donald Trump to do something right,” Vargas said. “So much has been going wrong in our country. This is an opportunity for him to do something right.”

Londoners Ran, Hid and Fought Attackers Amid Terror Rampage

Bar and restaurant patrons used what they could to block door in order to repel knife-wielding attackers at London's Borough Market after what police called terrorist incidents that began with a vehicle ramming into pedestrians on London Bridge, witnesses told NBC News.

Fabio Lamas, 20, was working at the Wheatsheaf Pub when he heard someone shout "knives, knives, knives" and he said someone inside used a barrel to block the door, and staff locked the doors and gates. Gunfire, believed to be from police, then rang out, he said.

At another restaurant in Borough Market, witnesses said that an attacker entered and stabbed a woman in the neck, and a manager threw bottles at the man and staff used a bar stool to push him outside.

At least 30 people have been taken to hospitals throughout London after two terror attacks Saturday night. Six people have died and police shot and killed three suspects. Police are investigating.

Darrell Issa Holds Contentious Town Hall in Orange County

“You can make a decision on election day –“ Darrell Issa began to say at a town hall in San Juan Capistrano Saturday morning. “Yes we will!” a constituent quickly shouted from the crowd, an implication by the woman that he might be voted out.

The remark was just one of many critical comments aimed at the North County congressman during the two-hour event. Issa answered dozens of questions that ranged from health care to the Russia investigation to Orange County congestion and climate change and even the Electoral College.

The congressman opened the town hall by saying he was “disappointed” in Trump pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement. “The world’s getting warmer. We know that,” he said. Issa has joined the bipartisan Climate Change Solution Caucus that addresses the causes, impacts and policy options on climate change.

While constituents lauded his stance on climate change, health care was a much more combative subject. Issa said the Republican American Health Care Act bill would give people the choice that the Affordable Care Act, with mandated health insurance, did not.

When asked about the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office’s (CBO) projected 24 million people who would stand to lose coverage under the AHCA, Issa was quick to point out the CBO’s new projected number was only 23 million.

“One if the false assumptions in CBO is many people who are getting the Affordable Care right now also have employers who could and in many cases do provide – but they simply go to the Affordable Care Act because [they think] it has a lower premium for them.” He says it’s a misconception that people will lose health care, rather, he asserts, many people will choose to forego coverage.

In regard to the AHCA’s unpopularity among the American public Issa told NBC 7, "the vast majority of Americans didn’t want the Affordable Care Act when it was crammed down their throats so it’s not about popularity, unless it was about popularity then when they won by twisting arms and actually lying to members of Congress about what was actually in it or not in it.”

He said the numbers in the CBO score “ is very concerning because it doesn’t tell any particular story that’s meaningful.”

Issa stated that if people would rather choose to not have insurance and have more money in their pocket he’s sees it as “poor judgment” but , “it’s a choice and I got booed every time I said it’s a choice.”

In relation to the $839 billion in cuts to Medicaid over 10 years also projected by the CBO, he told NBC 7 “People who are on Medicaid will still qualify for Medicaid,” and that there would be a work requirement for people who are fit to work.

Issa clearly threaded the needle when it came to Trump. He was careful to not align himself too closely with the president, but he would also not fully rebuke him.

“The fact is I made a different decision when it came to the president than maybe you did,” he told the booing audience, but quickly said, “I have to hold him accountable and his administration accountable.”

Security Heightened for Rock 'n' Roll Marathon

In the wake of the attacks in London Saturday, security is a top priority for organizers of Sunday morning’s Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon.

The main security question: how do you keep a 26-mile stretch of road safe?

More than 30,000 runners and walkers are set to race Sunday morning at 6:15 a.m., and law enforcement agencies are preparing behind the scenes.

“You will definitely see law enforcement,” San Diego Fire, Bomb Squad Commander John Wood tells NBC 7. “Trying to sweep a city this size, you know, you try and do it as best you can.”

Wood says they always keep the Boston Marathon in mind when doing security for the race.

“After the Boston Marathon obviously we all ramped up our games for something like that. For San Diego we're prepared we walk among the people we kind of check things out we make sure everything is safe, for the public and for the runners.”

Officers will be wearing light body armor during the race.

“We’ll wear [the armor] often times, if we're going on something that is less dangerous,” he said. “This is the helmet for those big green suits that we wear.” The suits each weigh 100 pounds.

Local law enforcement, hazmat and bomb squads are all working together to local the marathon down. ATF and the San Diego Police Department also have an Explosive Detection Canine Team.

“They're designed basically to detect any of these chemicals that you can see here,” Wood says.

The most common type of explosive is smokeless powder, which includes firearms, pipe bombs or any homemade devices. “We'll be out there, making sure everybody is keeping safe,” Wood promises.

'Resolute Solidarity': World Leaders React to London Attack

Leaders around the world were quick to condemn the terror attacks that left seven people dead and dozens injured Saturday night in the heart of London. Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull called for "resolute solidarity" with Britain in the face of the "shocking" attacks.

Social media quickly filled with reactions from celebrities, politicians and public figures.

European Union President Jean-Claude Juncker said he was monitoring the situation "with horror" and sent condolences to victims and their families. French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted that "France is more than ever at the side of the United Kingdom."

German Chancellor Angela Merkel released a statement that said, "We are united beyond all borders in horror and sorrow, but also in determination." She also reaffirmed her support for Britain and fighting "every form of terrorism."

See what other leaders had to say on Twitter:

British police called the attacks at the London Bridge and the Borough Market "terrorist incidents." Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said that while they believe all the attackers were killed, the investigation continues.

This is this third terrorist attack in England in three months.

90 Percent of UK Police Don’t Carry Guns: Here's Why

0
0

The London Bridge attack and a similar one in March may have been shocking, but authorities have known for years that such incidents were coming, NBC News reported.

Last year London's police chief warned it was a case of "when, not if" the U.K. joined the other countries to be hit by terrorists.

Despite that, more than 90 percent of the capital's police officers carry out their daily duties without a gun. Most rely on other tools to keep their city safe: canisters of mace, handcuffs, batons and stun-guns.

The Metropolitan Police, which covers most of London, was founded in 1829 on the principle of "policing by consent" rather than by force. They believe police officers with guns sends the wrong message to communities and can actually cause more problems than it solves.

The Metropolitan Police carried out some 3,300 deployments involving firearms in 2016. They didn't fire a single shot at a suspect.

London's mayor boldly declared that the city is open after a terror attack in the heart of the British capital killed seven people and injured dozens.

"We are all shocked and angry today, but this is our city," Sadiq Khan told NBC News on Sunday. "We will never let these cowards win, and we will never be cowed by terrorism."

Khan doesn't think the general elections scheduled for Thursday should be postponed or moved because of the attacks.

Khan said the attacks were motived to stop people from "enjoying the democracy that we have."

John Kerry Blasts Trump Over Paris Accord Exit

Former Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday blasted President Donald Trump's decision to pull out of the Paris climate accord and mocked the president's claims about negotiating a different agreement, NBC News reported.

"When Donald Trump says, well, we're going to negotiate a better deal, you know, he's going to go out and find a better deal? That's like O.J. Simpson saying he's going to go out and find the real killer," Kerry said during an exclusive interview on NBC's "Meet The Press."

"Everybody knows he isn't going to do that because he doesn't believe in it," Kerry continued. "If he did believe in it, he wouldn't have pulled out of Paris. America has unilaterally ceded global leadership on this issue, which for years, even Republican Presidents George H.W. Bush pushed in this direction."

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, also on Sunday's "Meet The Press," firmly defended the president's decision, repeating his assertion that other nations around the world applauded the U.S. previously signing on because "it put us at an economic disadvantage."

Putin on Flynn: 'I Didn't Even Really Talk to Him'

0
0

In an exclusive interview with NBC New’s Megyn Kelly, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that he had limited personal interaction with former U.S. National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, despite a widely circulated December, 2015 photo that shows the two sitting next to each other at dinner during an event to celebrate a Russian TV network.

"When I came to the event for our company, Russia Today, and sat down at the table, next to me there was a gentleman sitting on one side," Putin said. "I made my speech. Then we talked about some other stuff. And I got up and left. And then afterwards I was told, 'You know there was an American gentleman. He was involved in some things. He used to be in the security services' ... that's it. I didn't even really talk to him... That's the extent of my acquaintance with Mr. Flynn."

Flynn served as President Donald Trump's national security adviser in the White House for less than a month before he was fired for what the administration said was lying about his conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak to Vice President Mike Pence.

SDPD Chief Zimmerman: No Threat in San Diego After London

0
0

San Diego Police Department Chief Shelley Zimmerman said there is no credible threat to San Diego after the terror attacks in London.

"As always @SanDiegoPD ask you to stay vigilant," Zimmerman tweeted after the attack. "Prayers to London."

British police arrested a dozen people Sunday over a vehicle and knife attack in London that left seven people dead.

The assault unfolded over a few terrifying minutes Saturday, starting when a van veered off the road and barreled into pedestrians on busy London Bridge. Three men fled the van with large knives and attacked people at bars and restaurants in nearby Borough Market, police and witnesses said.

London's Metropolitan Police said armed officers fatally shot the attackers within eight minutes. Eight officers fired a total of 50 rounds at the attackers, police said. The force said the men were wearing what looked like suicide vests that turned out to be fake.

Emergency officials said 48 people, including two police officers, were treated at hospitals across London. Thirty-six victims were still being treated Sunday afternoon, 21 of who were critically injured, authorities said. French and Spanish citizens were among the wounded.

The death toll of seven didn't include the three attackers.

Driver Crashes Through Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Barricade: PD

A driver broke through a Rock 'n' Roll Marathon barricade at Sea World Drive early Sunday morning, almost striking runners and launching a pursuit that ended in Oceanside, San Diego police confirmed.

The crash happened at approximately 8:05 a.m. Sunday near Sea World Drive, on the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon course, police confirmed to NBC San Diego.

A 22-year-old man behind the wheel of a Camry went through a cone pattern and nearly struck runners on the course, SDPD Sgt. Houseman said.

The driver failed to yield when police tried to stop him, launching a pursuit. The driver struck a car during the pursuit; the driver suffred minor injuries.

The 22-year-old drove up Interstate 5 to the Oceanside Boulevard off-ramp, where the car rolled over. The man jumped out of the car and took off on foot.

Officers and a K-9 chased the suspect and took him into custody shortly after.

The man, who has not been identified, will be charged with Felony Evading and Hit-and-Run. He was taken to Tri City Hospital for evaluation.

Drugs, alcohol and terrorism are not suspected.

“Today's barricade incident is completely unrelated to any incidents occurring in the rest of the country. Ours was a case of someone trying to get to the freeway and completely disregarding posted signs and erected barricades. Public safety is our number one priority and we work closely with all our law enforcement partners to ensure San Diego remains a safe place to live and visit, said SDPD Sgt. Lisa McKean.

No one was injured.

Law enforcement agencies ramped up security for the marathon this year, in light of the terror attacks in London. Local law enforcement, hazmat and bomb squads are all working together to keep the marathon safe. ATF and the San Diego Police Department also have an Explosive Detection Canine Team.

More than 30,000 runners are racing in the marathon Sunday.

No further information was available.

Marathon Runner, 94, Sets Record in San Diego

Ninety four-year-old Harriette Thompson smiled and laughed as she crossed the finish line at the Rock 'N' Roll Marathon in San Diego Sunday, becoming the oldest woman to run a half-marathon.

"I guess it's unusual, but I don't know why people make such a big deal," Thompson said. "I feel just like I did when I was 16. But I just can’t move as fast."

She said for her, running is natural.

"It feels great," she said. "I am so happy that I was able to do it."

In 2015, Thompson broke the world record as the oldest woman to complete a full marathon.

Thompson, a two-time cancer survivor, said she runs to raise money for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. Through the years, she has raised $100,000 for the organization. She has raised $15,000 in 2017.

On Sunday, she ran with her family surrounding her.

"I enjoyed running across the finish line," Thompson said. "That’s always the biggest thing. And I really enjoyed having my family with me."

She said her secret to a healthy life at her age is, of course, exercise on a regular basis and a balanced diet. Though, she said it is hard for her to resist sugar.

For those looking for words of advice, Thompson said she encourages everyone to challenge themselves.

"It's never to late to do something that you're interested in doing," she said. "There’s no reason to not go after something you believe in."
