Coronado Residents Debate Transitional Housing Project

A transitional housing project for sex trafficking victims in the affluent community of Coronado sparked heavy debate Tuesday night.

Generate Hope, a group that provides a safe place for survivors of sex trafficking and helps them recover, is leasing the famed Hansen Mansion for the project.

Once the party place for Hollywood stars and home to billionaires of generations past, the mansion could soon serve the victims of San Diego's second largest criminal industry.

Tuesday night, many residents gathered at the Community Center in Coronado seemed to agree with the effort to help the victims, but not the location.

“I support Generate Hope's mission...I don't think it belongs here,” a Coronado resident said.

"I say we tap the breaks and call on our mayor to make sure we do the right thing for all our citizens. This is a good thing but shouldn't rush in to anything, and all our citizens--not just for six,” another Coronado resident said.

The 14,000-square foot Hansen house will become transitional housing for six to 12 victims of sex trafficking.

“They are not substance abusing individuals. These are people that have had their lives taken from them in horendous ways and we are helping them get back on their feet,” Generate Hope Founder Susan Munsey said.

But most residents who live nearby fear the home will bring trouble, maybe even crime. They are concerned about parking, policing and property values.

According to the real estate website Zillow, the median home price in the neighborhood is over one and half million dollars.

"I don't see how residential qualifies for a multi-family non-profit business,” one Coronado resident said.

Generate Hope Executive Director Dan DeSaegher said the victims are 18-months out of the sex trafficking control. They are one step away from living on their own.

There would also be a strict no alcohol or drug policy and failure would mean expulsion from the program, DeSaegher added.

"In a place like Coronado with two exits, we appreciate that we would not bring any threat,” DeSaegher said.

The house is slated to open in December.

Special Olympics Torch Carried Through San Deigo

On Tuesday, more than 30 local, county, state, federal, and military agencies participated in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg for Special Olympics Southern California (LETR).

The mission of the event was to increase awareness and raise funds for the Special Olympics movement.

Brian Richter, director of LETR, stated that hundreds of officers were going to be running from the Chula Vista Police Department all the way up through San Diego, into Pacific Beach, La Jolla, and finishing in Del Mar.

On Wednesday, they will be starting in Del Mar, and carry the torch all the way to Camp Pendleton, where it will proceed into Orange County.

The torch will eventually make its way to Long Beach, where the Summer Games will be held on June 10.

The Special Olympics thrives on the acts of the officers who give their time to this cause that allows them to unite the community and make a positive impact on people with and without intellectual disabilities.

Since its founding in 1968, Special Olympics San Diego County has offered 49 years of year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Lindsey Newman, an athlete who competes on a basketball team for the Special Olympics, stated she wants other special athletes to know it is important to “just follow your heart and to pursue what you have become and you are doing the best that you can."

"Do not put yourself down and put yourself out there in the world. Just don’t say those kinds of [negative] things," Newman said.

Newman said she loves playing basketball with her team. She added they do everything together and have become one big family.

Sandra Albrektsen, from the San Diego Police Department, said she is honored to represent the department and help raise money for a sporting event that inspires people from around the world.

“The Special Olympics celebrates all of our best qualities as human beings," Albrektsen said. "I am so proud of the San Diego Police Department for its long history of raising money for all the athletes who compete.”

If you would like to get involved in the Special Olympics, there are year around opportunities to help out with this cause.

Transgender Wis. Student Can Use Boys' Bathroom: Court

A federal appeals court in Wisconsin ruled Tuesday that a transgender high school student who identifies as male can use the boys' bathroom, NBC News.

Asthon Whitaker, 17, is a senior at George Nelson Tremper High School in Kenosha. Though the unanimous decision came the same week he graduates, he said he is still happy.

"I hope my case will help other transgender students in Kenosha and elsewhere to just be treated the same as everyone else without facing discrimination and harassment from school administrators," he said.

The high school had insisted Ashton use the girls' bathroom or a gender-neutral bathroom in the school's office. The court argued Ashton's presence in the boy's bathroom posed no more of a risk to privacy than an "overly curious student."

5 Months in, GOP Congressional Agenda Lags: Analysis

After beginning the year with a long and ambitious list of priorities, the GOP is lagging far behind its expectations for its policy agenda, NBC News reported.

Republicans are pushing to get the American Health Care Act passed in the Senate, which they say is what will allow them to switch focus to tax reform. They also need to address infrastructure, which was a top agenda item for the president.

What has dragged on the party's momentum was the slower-than-anticipated confirmations of President Donald Trump's nominees, as well as the ongoing controversy over investigations into Russia meddling in last year's election.

Congress has just seven weeks left before the beginning of August, when lawmakers take five weeks off. Then the fall agenda will be filled wth funding the government before the new fiscal year on Oct. 1.

Man With Guns, Ammo Arrested at Trump Hotel: DC Police

A man has been arrested after police found an assault rifle, a handgun and 90 rounds of ammunition in his possession at the Trump International Hotel in Northwest Washington.

Bryan Moles, 43, of Edinboro, Pennsylvania, was arrested and charged with carrying a pistol without a license and possession of unregistered ammunition inside the hotel shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

D.C. Police and the U.S. Secret Service acted on a tip that Moles had been threatening remarks. It's not immediately clear toward whom the threats were directed or what were Moles intentions.

According to a charging document, police learned Moles was traveling to Washington, D.C., with the weapons and ammunition.

D.C. police and the U.S. Secret Service "almost simultaneously" received information about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday from Pennsylvania State Police that a man was traveling to D.C., possibly to Trump International Hotel, armed with weapons, Police Chief Peter Newsham said at a news conference Wednesday morning.

Pennsylvania police received the information via a tip and shared it quickly, Newsham said.

D.C. police and the Secret Service responded and contacted hotel security, who found the suspect's vehicle in the parking garage. Police found one of the guns in plain view inside the suspect's car; the other was found in the glove compartment.

Moles had checked himself in to the hotel about 1 a.m., Newsham said. Authorities found Moles in the hotel and arrested him.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser called the incident "disturbing" but said it was resolved "quickly and peacefully."

It wasn't immediately clear if Moles had an attorney.

"Today's incident is an important reminder that when you see something, it is important to say something to an official," Bowser said.

NASA Announces 1st Mission to 'Touch the Sun'

A NASA spacecraft will aim straight for the sun next year.

The space agency announced the red-hot mission Wednesday during a ceremony honoring astrophysicist Eugene Parker, professor emeritus at the University of Chicago. The mission, originally called Solar Probe Plus, was renamed after Parker during the event — the first time a spacecraft has been named after a living scientist.

"I’m greatly honored to be named after such an important mission," Parker said as he was presented with a model of the mission's spacecraft.

Parker’s discovery of the "solar wind," the corona’s supersonic expansion into interplanetary space, in 1957 "reshaped how scientists think of space and set this entire endeavor in motion," said Isaacs. Parker also theorized that the sun's corona was several hundred times hotter than the visible solar surface (the photosphere) and the development.

"Today's event was almost 60 years in the making,” Eric Isaacs, executive vice president for research, innovation and national laboratories at the University of Chicago, said.

Scheduled to launch in summer 2018, the Parker Probe Plus will fly within 4 million miles of the sun's surface — right into the solar atmosphere. It will be subjected to brutal heat and radiation like no other man-made structure before.

"The spacecraft will explore the sun’s outer atmosphere and make critical observations that will answer decades-old questions about the physics of how stars work," NASA said in a statement.

NASA hopes data collected during the mission will improve forecasting of weather events in space that impact life on Earth, the lives of astronauts in space and satellites, the agency said.

"One recent study by the National Academy of Sciences estimated that without advance warning a huge solar event could cause two trillion dollars in damage in the US alone, and the eastern seaboard of the U.S. could be without power for a year," NASA said.

NASA will make the announcement during an event at the University of Chicago’s William Eckhardt Research Center Auditorium at 11 a.m. ET.

NYC Residents Try to Stop ICE Arrest in Queens: Reports

Dozens of residents banded together Tuesday to try to stop federal immigration agents from arresting an undocumented man accused of burglary, according to reports.

The neighbors gathered on 112th Street in Richmond Hill, trying to keep Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents from arresting 35-year-old Hardat Sampat, a Guyanese national.

Sampat is accused of burglary and re-entering the U.S. illegally, according to the Daily News. He was on his way to Queens Criminal Court Tuesday morning for a scheduled appearance when ICE agents in unmarked cars boxed the vehicle he was in and took him into custody.

His wife, who was in the driver's seat, refused to move the vehicle, blocking ICE agents from driving away.

Within minutes, a number of people began gathering in protest of the arrest.

“My sister in law, my mother in law, say he’s innocent,” said one woman, who wasn’t identified. “He didn’t do anything. Why? Why is this? He had a court case today. Let him go. And let the judge make the decision.”

Police eventually convinced Sampat’s wife to move her car, and ICE agents took Sampat in for processing.

Proposed Pot Festival Is Canceled

A medical marijuana festival scheduled at the Del Mar Fairgrounds has been canceled for now.

The board that manages the venue voted unanimously Tuesday to rescind the contract with the organizers of the so-called Goodlife Festival.

The way the event was organized didn't comply with federal laws despite the fact the venue is owned by the state, board members said.

The biggest concern was a designated area for people to smoke marijuana.

The board says if the promoter reworks the contract they'll reconsider the festival.

The festival, set for Sept. 23 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, was estimated to draw 6,000 people to learn about cannabis through a day of exhibitions and seminars.

California voters passed a law in November to legalize recreational marijuana. The sale and taxation of recreational marijuana go into effect Jan. 1, 2018.

Lincoln High School Has New Interim Principal

Lincoln High School has a new interim principal.

Vice Principal Jose Soto-Ramos will serve in that position for the 2017-2018 school year.

Soto-Ramos has been in his current position as Lincoln HS vice principal for the past five years.

Parents and students protested in front of the school several times, demanding Soto-Ramos be hired to fill the principal vacancy.

At the time, the vice principal was not being considered for the post, according to a district spokesperson.

San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy Marten appeared on NBC 7's "Politically Speaking" on May 19 and discussed the controversy.

She admitted it has taken awhile to hire a new principal at the school. However, she added, that is to be expected.

“I fully intend to see us all the way through this process where they will have the leadership that they need,” Superintendent Cindy Marten said.

On Tuesday, the SDUSD Board of Trustees announced the decision to place Soto-Ramos in an interim position.

"The decision to select Soto-Ramos as the Interim Principal was a true collaborative effort and one that was made after careful consideration and discussions with a panel comprised of teachers, students, parents, community members and district officials," SDUSD officials said in a written statement.

The district says it's no longer looking for a principal, but is still calling Soto-Ramos the interim principal.

Sources: Possible White House Shakeup Could Reach Priebus

Facing a West Wing in near-constant crisis, and with little progress so far on most of his legislative priorities, President Donald Trump is actively seeking advice about a shakeup that could envelop his chief of staff, Reince Priebus, NBC News reported.

Multiple sources close to the administration told NBC News the president has been sounding off about staff changes, although no final decisions have been made. Another administration source flatly denies Priebus is at risk.

But people close to Trump point to two names that have emerged in the conversations: David Urban, who oversaw the Pennsylvania operation for the Trump campaign, and Gary Cohn, the president's top economic adviser and former Goldman Sachs executive.

Is This South Texas 'Monster Frog' Real?

A monster frog making the rounds on social media may not be as gross as it seems.

Photos posted on the South Texas Hunting Association's Facebook show Markcuz Rangel holding what's claimed to be a frog weighing 13 pounds.

The post read, "Wanted to share a monster bull frog we got yesterday afternoon at one of our fishing ponds in South Texas ranch located in Batesville tx 13lb monster frog!!!"

"Everybody from Time Magazine in New York to stations in San Francisco have been jumping (pun intended) on this big frog story," Steve Lightfoot, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department spokesman, told NBC DFW.

Lightfoot said the frog pictured is indeed a big bullfrog, though bullfrogs rarely exceed one pound in weight.

Instead, what we have here is an optical illusion. Think of images of people holding up the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

"Since there is nothing to gain reference with, such as a hand around the frog, there's no way to say for certain how big it is," he said.

Lightfoot said the hunter is welcome to bring it in to be weighed or inspected by a Texas Parks biologist.

'Covfefe': Trump Lights Up Internet With Late-Night Tweet

"Covfefe." It was the word that rocked the Twitter world just after midnight on the East Coast.

President Donald Trump wrote the word in a late-night message from his personal account that mystified much of the rest of Twitter: "Despite the constant negative press covfefe."

It wasn't clear what he meant, though some suspected the word was supposed to read "coverage." But many others had fun with the tweet, as the hashtag #covfefe quickly began to trend.

Comedian and late-night host Jimmy Kimmel got in on the debate. "What makes me saddest is that I know I'll never write anything funnier than #covfefe," Kimmel tweeted.

Many people turned the word into a meme and some users started their own "Covfefe" Twitter accounts.

Even Merriam-Webster sounded off, though its tweet didn't specifically mention "covfefe" or Trump.

The ambiguous tweet stayed online for more than five hours, gaining thousands more retweets than Trump's other recent messages before being removed shortly after 5:30 a.m.

Trump then sent another message to address what many people thought was a typo.

"Who can figure out the true meaning of "covfefe" ??? Enjoy!" the president wrote.

The White House has not responded to a request for comment. The tweet came the day White House communications director Michael Dubke announced he was resigning from his position.

A man was taken into custody after San Diego police received several reports of shots fired in the downtown area on Wednesday.

The initial 911 call came in at 2:24 a.m. reporting the sound of gunfire at 4th Avenue and Cedar Street in the Cortez Hill area, police said.

Officers responded and searched the area. They said they found a man with a shotgun and a rifle and shell casings in the area.

No one was injured. Police said there was no property damage.

The man complained of chest or back pain from a previous injury so emergency services transported him to a nearby hospital. Once the man is released from the hospital, he will be booked into the county jail, police said.

The location of the report was south of Interstate 5 and west of State Route 163 where it leads into the downtown area.

90 Dead, 400 Wounded in Bombing of Kabul Diplomatic Area

A massive suicide truck bombing rocked a highly secure diplomatic area of Kabul on Wednesday morning, killing 90 people and wounding as many as 400, an attack that left a scene of mayhem and destruction and sent a huge plume of smoke over the Afghan capital.

The target of the explosion in the Wazir Akbar Khan area was not immediately known, but Ismail Kawasi, spokesman of the public health ministry, said most of the casualties were civilians, including women and children.

It was one of the worst attacks Kabul had seen since the drawdown of foreign forces from the country at the end of 2014. The bombing also raised serious questions about the Afghan government's ability to secure the war-battered nation.

Associated Press images from the scene showed the German Embassy and several other embassies located in the area heavily damaged. Germany, Japan and Pakistan said some of their embassy employees and staff were hurt in the explosion.

In the immediate aftermath of the blast, Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danish told NBC News it occurred close to a gate to the presidential palace. But the site of the bombing is much nearer to the German embassy.

The BBC said a driver for the British broadcaster was killed and four of its journalists were wounded. Afghanistan's private TOLO Television also reported a staffer killed; Germany said an Afghan security guard outside its embassy was among those killed.

The explosion took place at the peak of Kabul's rush hour, when roads are packed with worktime commuters. Najib Danish, deputy spokesman for the Interior Ministry, said the bomber detonated his truck filled with explosives close to a busy intersection in the Wazir Akbar Khan district. The blast left a gaping crater, at least five meters (yards) deep.

The neighborhood is considered Kabul's safest area, with foreign embassies protected by dozens of 10-foot-high blast walls and government offices, guarded by police and national security forces. The German Embassy, the Foreign Ministry and the Presidential Palace are all in the area, as are the British and the Canadian embassies. The Chinese, Turkish and Iranian embassies are also located there.

The U.S Embassy and the NATO mission in Kabul are also near, about a kilometer (half mile) away from the site. Both condemned the attack and the alliance praised "the courage of Afghan Security Forces, especially the police and first responders."

Local TV footage showed shocked residents soaked in blood stumbling about, then being ferried away to hospitals. Passers-by stopped and helped the wounded into private cars, others congregated outside the nearby Italian-run Emergency Hospital.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the blast, though both the Taliban and the Islamic State group have staged large-scale attacks in the Afghan capital in the past.

The Taliban later Wednesday issued a statement denying any involvement and condemning all attacks against civilians. Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesman for the Taliban, said the Kabul explosion had "nothing to do with the Mujahedeen of Islamic Emirate," as the Taliban call themselves. Even though the Taliban claim they are only waging war against the Kabul government and foreign forces in Afghanistan, most of the casualties of their attacks have been civilians.

A statement from the Ministry of Interior Affairs said it condemned "in the strongest terms the terrorist attack" that killed so many, including women and children. "These heinous acts go against the values of humanity as well values of peaceful Afghans," it added.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani also condemned the attack, which came just days into the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. A statement from his office quoted Ghani as saying that "the terrorists, even in the holy month of Ramadan, the month of goodness, blessing and prayer, are not stopping the killing of our innocent people."

Germany's Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said that along with the Afghan guard who was killed, a German diplomat was lightly wounded while an Afghan staffer sustained severe injuries. Gabriel offered his condolences to the guard's family.

Neighboring Pakistan denounced the "terrorist attack in Kabul" and its Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the bombing "caused damage to the residences of some Pakistani diplomats and staff, living in the close vicinity, and inflicted minor injuries to some."

China's foreign ministry said its embassy was partly damaged but that no staffers or Chinese citizens were injured.

Germany has had troops in Afghanistan for 15 years, primarily concentrated in the north in and around Mazar-e-Sharif. They're currently one of the biggest contributors to the NATO-led Resolute Support mission with around 980 soldiers on the ground to support and train Afghan security forces.

Wednesday's explosion was so heavy that more than 50 vehicles were either destroyed or damaged around the site of the attack. "We don't know at this moment what was the target," said Danish.

Residents described a mushroom cloud over Kabul and windows were shattered in shops, restaurants and other buildings up to a kilometer (half mile) from the blast site.

"There are a large number of casualties, but I don't know how many people are killed or wounded," said an eyewitness, Gul Rahim.

Mohammad Haroon, who owns a sporting goods store near the site, said all the windows on his shop and others around him were shattered. "I've never seen such a powerful explosion in my life," he said.

"Business will be very bad, nobody will come for shopping anymore," he added.

Kawasi, the health official, said the wounded were admitted to different Kabul hospitals.

Shortly after the explosion, all roads in Wazir Akbar Khan were blocked off by Afghan security forces and helicopters were deployed over the neighborhood.

Last month, the Afghan Taliban announced the beginning of their spring offensive, promising to build their political base in the country while focusing military assaults on the international coalition and Afghan security forces.

U.S. and Afghan forces have been battling the Taliban insurgency for more than 15 years. The United States now has more than 8,000 troops in Afghanistan, training local forces and conducting counterterrorism operations. In the past year, they have largely concentrated on thwarting a surge of attacks by the Taliban, who have captured key districts, such as Helmand province, which U.S. and British troops had fought bitterly to return to the government.

Yet the Afghan war shows no signs of letting up and the emergence of the local Islamic State branch has made Afghanistan even more volatile.

The affiliate, known as the Islamic State in Khorasan, an ancient name for parts of Afghanistan, Iran and Central Asia, has taken credit for several brazen assaults on Kabul, including the attack on a military hospital on March 8 when IS gunmen, wearing white lab coats, stormed a military hospital in Kabul, killing 50 people.

Associated Press writers David Rising in Berlin and Kathy Gannon in Islamabad contributed to this report.

A gate at the Los Angeles home of NBA star LeBron James was vandalized with a racial slur, according to Los Angeles police.

The LAPD says the slur was painted over Wednesday morning. The department responded to the home at about 7 a.m. PT, but it was not immediately clear when the language was painted on the gate.

A source familiar with the case told NBC News the "n-word" was spray-painted on the driveway gate.

Details about the investigation at the four-time league MVP's Brentwood mansion were not immediately available. No arrests were reported early Wednesday, but authorities will likely check security camera video in the area to identify the perpetrator.

James is set to play in the NBA Finals, which begin Thursday between his Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors.

James purchased the 9,440-square-foot home in 2015, according to the Los Angeles Times

San Diego County Releases Childhood Obesity Report

$
0
0

A study released this week by San Diego County’s Childhood Obesity Initiative (COI) shows alarming statistics, including the struggles of childhood obesity in disadvantaged communities.

According to the first-ever “State of Childhood Obesity” report, there are wide disparities in childhood obesity rates in San Diego County by both race/ethnicity and economic disadvantage.

One in five students who come from low-income families struggles with obesity, per the study. Rates of childhood obesity are twice as high for Hispanic and low-income children.

More than one-third – or 34 percent – of children in fifth, seventh and ninth grades at San Diego’s public schools were declared overweight or obese in 2015.

One of the issues, according to the COI, is the accessibility of fast food chains in disadvantaged neighborhoods.

“In many of our most disadvantaged neighborhoods, it’s hard to eat healthy, explained Dr. Natalie Muth, M.D., of Children’s Primary Care Medical Group. “It’s hard to have access to those affordable, healthy foods and really easy to do the opposite.”

In the last 30 years, childhood obesity rates in San Diego County have doubled and quadrupled in teenagers alone.

Muth said some of the problems can be tackled directly on school grounds.

“Physical activities have been maneuvered out of the day of children’s lives – out of the school day,” she said.

Another culprit may be the choices available at schools and around cities.

“Very few of our schools or cities have any policy around healthy beverages,” Muth added.

The report said there’s a need for improvement for more school districts and city governments to enact policies to support access to healthy beverages.

An alternative could be serving water bottles at lunch instead of chocolate milk, suggests Miguel Angel Molina, a junior at Kearny Mesa High School and healthy community youth advocate.

“Include the youth’s opinion on what the youth wants to eat,” he added.

Molina has personally taken on the issue of childhood obesity, working with children at a local elementary school near his Valencia Park community.

The teenager said he joined the COI to help raise awareness on the issue.

Despite the findings in the study, which focused on the 2014-2015 school year, local efforts to combat childhood obesity did show some progress over the decade prior. The COI said that between 2005 and 2010, overall obesity rates in San Diego County decreased by 4 percent.

The COI said current efforts to battle the obesity epidemic locally include 16 out of 18 cities in San Diego County adopting policies to promote physical activity and 33 out of 42 school districts now conducting farm-to-school activities. The rate of in-hospital breastfeeding – an early first defense against obesity – is at 80 percent.

The release of the report coincides with the national 9th Biennial Childhood Obesity Conference in San Diego this week, which brings together 1,600 health experts.

The COI hopes that by releasing these findings, agencies in the community will work together to reduce obesity rates.

Fired FBI Director James Comey is expected to testify in public next week after having been "cleared for takeoff," by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, a source close to Comey tells NBC News.

The source, a former law enforcement official, declined to say whether Mueller had specifically authorized Comey to discuss his interactions with President Donald Trump, but said it was reasonable to expect that subject to come up.

People close to Comey have said he is eager to testify in public in the wake of his abrupt dismissal, which Comey allies believe was an attempt to thwart the FBI's investigation into Russian election meddling.

A congressional aide tells NBC News that the Senate intelligence committee has long expected that Comey would testify sometime next week and anticipated that he would speak to Mueller in advance to clear what he can and cannot discuss so as not to impede the federal investigation.
