What to Eat at the 2017 San Diego County Fair

0
0

It’s about that time to tantalize those tastebuds: the menu at the 2017 San Diego County Fair will soon be rolled out, featuring the sweet and the salty, the fried and the flavorful and everything in between.

Each summer, vendors at the San Diego County Fair whip up a new batch of unique treats including strangely scrumptious concoctions from the mind of fair favorite, Chicken Charlie’s.

Here’s a glimpse at what’s cookin’ this year:

Krispy Kreme Chicken Ice Cream Sandwich: Fried chicken. Doughnuts. Ice cream. Together. Chicken Charlie’s has cracked the code on how to have your dinner and dessert at the same time.

Peanut Butter Meatballs: Once again, Chicken Charlie’s marries two foods that, in theory, don’t mesh, but in practice apparently do.

Fried Pineapple With Ice Cream: Another Chicken Charlie’s treat – fried, of course.

Beignets on a Stick: Because everything’s better on a stick.

Bacon-Wrapped Asparagus: Bacon-A-Fair is all about bacon, all the time. But with this treat, you can also eat your veggies.

Bacon-Wrapped Cactus: Another green-meets-bacon creation.

Maui Cowboy Burger: This dish from Grantburger keeps in line with the fair’s Wild Wild West Theme, combining an Angus beef patty with cheese, fried SPAM, marinated veggies, lettuce and spicy sauce.

Cowboy Pastrami: Another fair theme dish, this time from Grinders, featuring pastrami, barbeque pork, onions and cheese.

Sloppy Chicken: Also from Grinders, combining chicken, chili, onions and cheese.

Jalapeño Popper and Bacon Grilled Cheese: From the comfort food king, Grilled Cheese A-Fair, this treat is loaded with Applewood smoked bacon, crispy jalapeño cream cheese poppers, double cheddar cheese and chipotle aioli on grilled sourdough bread.

Deep-Fried Octopus: Found at Reno’s Fish and Chips, an alternative to the more traditional fried seafood dishes.

Smoked Brisket Nachos: These nachos – with hickory, alder and oak-smoked ingredients – hail from a new restaurant at the fair, Iron Skillet and Smoke.

Sarsaparilla Float: A sweet treat, also from Iron Skillet and Smoke

Wild Wild West Drinks: The fair’s hidden speakeasy, The Jade Peacock, will be pouring themed drinks for the 21+ crowd.

Nitro Pop Popcorn: Candy popcorn infused with nitrogen, available at the Candy Factory.

Into the Sunset: A craft beer brewed in partnership with Mike Hess Brewing, just for the fair. It’s a special blood orange IPA brewed with two-row, Vienna and wheat malts and a combination of centennial, citra, nugget and simcoe hops.

Rooty Tooty: The fair’s signature cocktail of 2017 blends sarsaparilla and Captain Morgan Spiced Rum. It’s available for the 21+ crowd at the Painted Pony Saloon inside the theme exhibit or at the Into the Sunset Bar on the Main Avenue.

The San Diego County Fair runs from June 2 through July 4 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. It’s closed the first four Mondays and the first three Tuesdays of the season. The fair is the largest annual event in San Diego County, and one of the top 10 fairs in the U.S. and Canada, drawing more than 1.6 million visitors every year.

NBC 7 will be there on opening day, getting a closer look at this year's fried and flavorful fare. We'll share those photos with you next week!

Shaving Cream Can Saves Woman When Stray Bullet Flies into Kitchen

A Paradise Hills woman was in her home Friday night when she was shot by a stray bullet.

Her sister, Tesha Turner said the 19-year-old tried to run around the corner but couldn’t. “She was standing here, she was eating, or making something to eat and then she heard it, ‘snap!’ everybody gets down, and then she said she tried to bend the corner but then she couldn't make it, she was already shot,” Turner explained.

The shooting happened in the 6200 block of Potomac Street and Calle Tortuosa around 11 p.m.

Turner said they were getting her children ready for bed when they heard shots down the street. They hurried the children toward the back of the house, and Turner’s sister, who was ducking behind a wall, was hit by one of two stray bullets. The bullet went through a backpack she happened to be wearing and a can of shaving cream, lodging in her back near her spine.

Turner said she’s now scared to let her children go outside or even stay in her home.

“Somebody just went by and shot and it came through the house. They can do it again, and who is to say it’s not going to go through the window and somebody is going to be sitting right there you know?" she said.

The police are still looking for the suspects who left in a two-door dark-colored car, possibly a Monte Carlo.

The family has set up a Gofundme page to help with the victim’s recovery. Turner says her sister is now resting at home.

Scandal in the WH? Clinton Aides Know What That’s Like

Life was hell in the White House.

The aides and advisers who endured the last major independent investigation at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue say President Donald Trump and his team are not prepared for how miserable their lives are about to become, NBC News reported.

The investigation into former President Bill Clinton wrought havoc on the lives of the White House staff, brought down a sitting governor, and led to the impeachment of a president for only the second time in American history.

Former FBI Director Robert Mueller's is set with the task of looking into Russian meddling in the election and possible ties of the Trump campaign to Moscow. It begins with the start of Trump's presidency, when he has few accomplishments or good will to fall back on, and when the White House is already riven with internal divisions and leaks.

Councilmember, Conservancy Push for Balboa Park Facelift

Councilmember Chris Ward and the Balboa Park Conservancy are pushing for more financing to give the park a facelift. Ward says the park lacks dedicated funding to keep it maintained.

"We have critical infrastructure needs here to be able to fix our pipes, and our streets and our circulation within the park. We have new buildings that we would like to get done that are almost 30 years old, and we have a lot of facilities here today that are just starting to fall into disrepair,” Ward tells NBC 7.

The park relies heavily on nonprofits and other organizations for maintenance.

Ward is holding a public meeting to hear what needs to be fixed in the park.

Two years ago Balboa Park celebrated its 100th anniversary of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, which was the inception of the park as we know it today. The Cabrillo Bridge, Botanical Building and the Organ Pavilion were all built for the expo.

Beer Brawl Brewing Between Breweries

There's a beer battle brewing in San Diego over craft beer.

In the East Village, many consider Monkey Paw a craft beer jewel. Saturday, a new Oregon-based brewery owned by Anheuser Busch opend called 10 Barrel.

Around 6 p.m. a crowd gathered outside Monkey Paw. Cheers erupted as a plane flew by. Behind it was a sign that read "10 Barrel is not craft beer."

"You know it was just a crazy idea," says Robert Esparza.

Esparza was behind the sign. He set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for the plane. The campaign resonated. He needed $900, as of Saturday he was closing in on $5,000.

"It really shows that people are up against a hard battle and it means a lot to them. Otherwise, they wouldn't put their hard earned money towards it," he said.

"Everyone's got their own opinion and who am I to tell them what that opinion should be, right? But at the end of the day, we're not here trying to fool anyone," said Garret Wales, co-founder of 10 Barrel Brewing.

He flew in for Saturday's grand opening.

"We're having a good laugh about it. Hey, we just want to be friends," Wales said. "I can assure you that the intentions of 10 Barrel is to join this craft beer community. Help how we can. Get help where we need it and just be a member."

This debate ultimately boils down to two points. First, that buy-in to the community over time. Second, the definition of craft beer.

"I don't let someone else tell me what's craft," Wales said. "I define craft as something that's made with love; made with care. That's exactly what we've always done."

The Brewers Association defines it as something small, independent and traditional.

Though many people NBC7 talked to still described large local breweries as "craft."

"I think it's because they're San Diego based breweries from the get go. They're not moving into San Diego trying to masquerade as a craft brewery. They're born and raised here. And that matters to a lot of people," Esparza said.

10 Barrel has added 90 jobs to run it's new location here in San Diego.

North Korea’s Media Says Anti-Aircraft Weapon Tested

North Korean media claimed on Saturday that the country had tested a "a new type of anti-aircraft guided weapon," NBC News reported.

The country's state-run KCNA said that Kim Jong Un watched the test and that defects in the system have been fixed.

Reports of the new test come amid heightened tensions in the Korean peninsula and following international condemnation of several banned ballistic missile tests carried out so far this year.

Experts say some of the North's claims about its anti-aircraft systems are doubtful and that the latest claim may be an exaggeration.

2 Great White Sharks Surface Near Jersey Shore for Memorial Day Weekend

Two great white sharks are hanging out at the Jersey Shore and Delaware beaches this Memorial Day weekend.

Mary Lee, a 16-foot, 3,456-pound great white shark surfaced in the water near Cape May, New Jersey and Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Saturday and remained in the area Sunday, according to the non-profit shark-tracking group OCEARCH.

The mature predator was about 15 miles east-southeast of Cape May when she last pinged on OCEARCH's radar at 7 a.m. Sunday. Two hours earlier, she pinged near the shore of Lewes and Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

Researchers have been monitoring the shark’s movements after tagging her off Cape Cod back on September 17, 2012. Since then she’s made several trips to New Jersey.

Mary Lee isn't the only shark in our region. Cisco -- weighing around 362 pounds and measuring 8-feet, 7-inches pinged around 4 a.m. Friday at the mouth of the Delaware Bay, slightly closer to Lewes, Delaware than Cape May. As of Saturday, the shark was in an area between Rehoboth Beach and Cape May.

In the past month the immature shark — one of the few male white sharks tagged by the research group — has made its way up from off the coast of the Outer Banks in North Carolina to the Delaware Bay. He was originally tagged off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts in October and named for a nearby beach and brewery, OCEARCH said.

OCEARCH expedition leader Chris Fischer said Cisco is important to the group's mission of gaining data about the white shark population in hopes of protecting fish in the ocean.

"Cisco is a really interesting shark," Fischer said via phone from his home in Park City, Utah. "He's likely just coming in (the Delaware Bay) to forage."

Factors such as fish and water temperature (they like it around 60 to 65 degrees) can draw sharks to the Atlantic Coast this time of year, he said.

"The life of the male white shark was a complete mystery and we really started cracking the code on that just last year," Fischer said, adding that the information gathered on Cisco and two other male sharks have been critical to this new understanding.

He also said people shouldn’t fear a shark being in local waters — rather they should celebrate it because of what a shark means to the ocean ecosystem.

"People should be terrified of an ocean that's not full of sharks, they keep everything in balance," Fischer said. "So, if we want to make sure that our great grandchildren can eat fish sandwiches, we need lots of big sharks."

You can track the movements of Mary Lee and Cisco by clicking HERE or by downloading the Global Shark Tracker app for your iPhone or Android. You can also follow Mary Lee and Cisco on Twitter.

Cyber Security Expert Talks Protection After Chipotle Hack

0
0

Popular Mexican food chain Chipotle announced Friday that sensitive financial information of some customers was breached after detecting “unauthorized activity” on a payment network last month.

The sensitive information obtained by the hackers includes cardholder names, card numbers, expiration dates and security codes of Chipotle and Pizzeria Locale customers— 15 Chipotle locations in the San Diego area were affected.

Chipotle isn’t the first target of a massive cyber attack, and likely won’t be the last. A local cyber security firm CEO told NBC 7 that these kinds of attacks are on the rise because credit card and other sensitive customer information is increasing in value.

“The data are much more valuable now,” Ford Winslow, CEO of ICE Cybersecurity said. “Credit card information can be sold from one cybercriminal to another cybercriminal without ever stealing your money.”

Chipotle detailed the hacking method in a online release as malware designed to pull payment card data from cards used at point-of-sale machines. The company said the malware was removed and that they are working with cyber security firms continually to “enhance our security measures.”

The malware attack is part of what Winslow described as a “new wave of cybercrime,” and “big business,” for hackers.

As for Chipotle customers fearful that their financial information may be at risk, Winslow said monitoring your accounts is all you can do.

“Monitor your bank accounts, change your passwords, make sure you’re using passwords on your phone and monitor your credit reports,” Winslow said. “Those are things you should be doing anyway.”

Winslow said that the attack on Chipotle should also open the eyes of businesses and employees, not just customers, to the risks of cybercrime and ways to guard against it.

“It’s not just your I.T. security department that needs to be concerned, but every individual within a company needs to be diligent about what you click on,” Winslow said.

“One thing about this attack that could have helped is an active phishing campaign,” Winslow added. “That’s where the company sends out emails like this to employees to see who’s going to click on something. That has proven to be very effective in stopping these types of attacks.”

To keep his own personal information safe, Winslow said he only makes purchases at retail establishments on a credit card that he replaces every three months.

For the 30th year, the annual Rolling Thunder "Ride for Freedom" rumbled into Washington with hundreds of thousands of bikers. The official events started Friday evening, with the "Blessing of the Bikes" at Washington National Cathedral.

Since 1988, thousands of bikers and spectators have converged in Washington to honor military veterans and members of the military missing in action. More than 1 million people are expected to participate.

Vietnam War-era veteran Bob Atkinson and his wife, Brenda Atkinson, said they were honored to ride in Rolling Thunder for their 17th year. They rode 900 miles to D.C. from their home in Perkins, Illinois.

Bob Atkinson said he rides to "keep people aware that there's still people missing in action."

"Until we get rid of that and treat everybody fairly and right, then the government needs to be aware, and this is one way that they're aware every year -- that people come here for this," he said.

Being part of the huge wage of bikers approaching the National Mall never fails to make him cry, he said.

NBC Washington's Chris Gordon rode on the back of retired Navy veteran Ken Gulledge's bike. Gulledge rode to D.C. from South Carolina and will return to Afghanistsn soon following 30 years of service to the Navy.

"This is what I do. I defend freedom. This is the reason I'm on earth," he said.

Bikers will meet at the Pentagon from 7 a.m. to noon on Sunday, then ride to D.C. at noon. A program will be held on the National Mall, near the Lincoln Memorial, at 1:30 p.m. At 3 p.m., Billy Ray Cyrus, Rockie Lynne and Gordon Painter are set to perform.

There will be a wreath presentation at the World War II Memorial at 9 a.m. on Monday, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery at 11 a.m. and for Vietnam War veterans at 1 p.m. The National Memorial Day Parade is set to start at 2 p.m.

For the full schedule, see the Rolling Thunder website.

The ride is open to anyone who wishes to show their support. Organizers recommend that all participants be experienced in riding in slow, stop-and-go traffic.

Officials encourage drivers to keep an eye out for motorcyclists even more than usual. “Even the smallest collision between a car and a motorcycle can be deadly for the motorcyclist," Officer Nathan Probus of the Prince William County Police Department told WTOP.

'He's Home At Last': Navy Pilot Buried at Ft. Rosecrans

A fallen Navy pilot shot down in Vietnam 51 years ago was finally laid to rest at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery Sunday.

Lt. Commander Fredrick Crosby was killed in action during a bomb assessment mission, a mission that he volunteered for, in Vietnam in 1965.

His daughter, Deborah, worked for decades to fulfill a promise the family had made to her grandmother. On Sunday, her dream came true.

“I’m just overwhelmed with gratitude and with pride and with emotion,” Deborah said. “It was more than I could ever expect. It’s just been a really amazing day.”

Frederick Crosby’s remains were found in a pond in Thanh Hoa province, according to the Associated Press, with the help of a lifelong native who recalled for investigators a day he saw an American plane crash near his home.

Phan Van Truong, the 89-year-old witness, said that a salvage team came to the site and hauled pieces of the plane away. Van Truong even used scraps of the plane to make a cooking utensil and to fix a clock.

With the new information from Van Truong, military investigators searched the pond and in 2015 and found bones, pieces of Crosby’s uniform and his wedding band.

Just days before Memorial Day in 2016, Deborah got a call from the military telling her they had found her father.

“It was really overwhelming,” Deborah said of the phone call. “It brought me back to the day I found out about my dad’s death. It was very emotional. I just burst out into tears. It was very overwhelming.”

Now, Deborah and her family have closure. The thoughts of “What if?” have been erased and their dad, brother and grandfather has come home.

“My dad is home, and here we grew up in Pt. Loma, so my dad being buried here at Fort Rosecrans is truly coming home. He’s home at last,” Deborah said.

Fredrick’s sister Sharon said that her brother loved to fly, loved the Navy and love his country. She was sad that her parents weren’t alive to see this day, but was certainly relieved to see it for herself.

“I don’t think a day in that 52 years I haven’t thought of it.”

Biden Slams Democrats for Silence on Middle-Class Struggles

Former Vice President Joe Biden questioned Democrats' strategy for representing the middle-class, suggesting Sunday that they "haven't spoken enough to the fears and aspirations to the people we come from," NBC News reported.

"Because of the negative campaign that Trump ran, how much did we hear about that guy making 50,000 bucks on an assembly line, [and] the woman — his wife — making $28,000 as a hostess?" Biden asked a crowd of 1,200 at a campaign rally.

Biden took the train from his home in Delaware on Sunday to campaign alongside Phil Murphy, the front-runner to win the Democratic nomination for the New Jersey governor's race on June 6.

Protesters Gather Outside 'Alt-Right' Leader's Va. Office

A group of protesters gathered Sunday outside the offices of Richard Spencer, the white nationalist who is credited with coining the term "alt-right."

Protesters have convened outside Spencer's Virginia offices regularly in recent months, but the organizers said Sunday's gathering was larger than usual. The protest came a day after racist fliers with messages including "Stop the blacks" and "You're losing your country, white man" were found in Alexandria, Virginia.

Sunday's protesters held signs saying "White supremacy not welcome" and "Love not hate."

"It’s particularly important that we lead the way for our kids," said one protester, who gave his name only as Allen. "I would like to believe that some of the explicit racism and implicit racism that’s still around here will be a thing of the past in their generation. But if not, we need to teach them to stand up."

Alexandria residents woke up Saturday morning to find racist flyers on poles and car windows. The images on some of the fliers are the same as those on a white supremacist website that endorses "American fascism."

Mayor Allison Silberberg issued a statement, saying the city denounces "hate speech and hate crimes and discrimination in all forms."

Alexandria police are investigating.
