Construction on a highly-anticipated, new YMCA in southeast San Diego will hit a milestone Wednesday as the first wall panels of the building go up.

At around 7 a.m., crews will begin raising the panels, marking the official “tilt up” of the 56,000-square-foot Jackie Robinson Family YMCA located at 151 YMCA Way. The Y has been serving southeast San Diego on that same plot of land since 1943. With the new building, the YMCA hopes to serve even more local families for generations to come.

The groundbreaking for the new facility was in late May 2016. It is expected to open to families later this year.

The facility will include a new baseball and tee-ball field, and gymnasium boasting two basketball courts. Also in the works: a state-of-the-art fitness and wellness center; community multi-purpose room; child watch and kid’s center; intergenerational program space, teen/technology center; two multi-purpose group exercise studios; cycling studio; mind and body exercise studio; a member lounge and more.

Alcohol-Fueled Argument Prompts Pickaxe Attack: SDSO

An alcohol-fueled argument between longtime friends in San Diego turned violent Wednesday when a man allegedly attacked another with a pickaxe, deputies confirmed.

According to Sgt. Alex Navarro, of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department (SDSO), a deputy responded to a report of an assault just before 4:45 a.m. at a home in the 300 block of Paloma Lane in unincorporated El Cajon.

Officials said suspect Arthur Miller had been visiting his longtime friend. The men had both been drinking and, at one point, got into a heated argument. Things turned physical when Miller allegedly grabbed a pickaxe and attacked his friend, striking the victim several times with the tool.

Miller then fled the scene. Medics treated the victim on the spot; he was not taken to a hospital and is expected to recover. The victim’s name was not released.

Deputies in Lakeside soon found Miller a short distance away from the crime scene. He was arrested and booked into San Diego Central Jail on one count of assault with a deadly weapon, Navarro said.

No further details about the motive behind the alleged attack were immediately released. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on this case can reach out to Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.

'Singin' in the Rain' Returns to Movie Theaters

The 1952 musical that propelled actress Debbie Reynolds into Hollywood stardom will celebrate its 65th anniversary by returning to select theaters nationwide, including some in San Diego County.

A screening of the flick – organized by Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and Fathom Events – is planned for Wednesday. It is part of TCM’s “Big Screen Classics” series, which will bring one classic movie back to theaters each month this year for a two-day engagement. The first screening of "Singin' in the Rain" was on Sunday.

According to movie ticket-purchasing website Fandango, theaters in San Diego County set to screen “Singin’ in the Rain” on Wednesday include:

• UA Horton Plaza 8 (475 Horton Plaza in downtown San Diego)
• AMC Plaza Bonita 14 (3050 Plaza Bonita Rd. in National City)
• AMC Mission Valley 20 (1640 Camino Del Rio North)
• AMC La Jolla 12 (8657 Villa La Jolla Dr.)
• Regal Parkway Plaza Stadium 18 & IMAX (405 Parkway Plaza in El Cajon)
• Edwards Mira Mesa Stadium 18 IMAX & RPX (10733 Westview Parkway)
• Edwards Rancho San Diego Stadium 15 (2951 Jamacha Rd.)
• Regal Rancho Del Rey Stadium 16 (1025 Tierra Del Rey in Chula Vista)

There are two showtimes for the screening at those theaters: 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. After “Singin’ in the Rain,” the next classic movies to hit theaters via TCM's program will be “An Affair to Remember (Feb. 12 and Feb. 15) and “All About Eve” (March 5 and March 8).

Reynolds – who died on Dec. 28, 2016, just one day after the death of her daughter, “Star Wars” icon Carrie Fisher – played her breakout role of Kathy Selden in “Singin’ in the Rain.” The classic film takes a comedic look at Hollywood in the late 1920s as actors had to transition from silent films to “talkies.”

The actress was only 18 when she landed the role. In her biography, Reynolds said the movie – next to childbirth – was one of the most difficult challenges of her life.

While the film is more than six decades old, it appears to still be a favorite among Hollywood’s young A-Listers, including the cast of the sunny, modern-day musical, “La La Land,” which danced its way into a Golden Globe Awards record Sunday night.

According to The Wrap, last week at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala, lead actor and Golden Globes winner Ryan Gosling said the cast of “La La Land” watched “Singin’ in the Rain” every day on the set for inspiration.

“I wish I could have said this [to Reynolds] in person,” Gosling said, according to The Wrap. “I’d like to thank Debbie Reynolds for her wonderful career of work. She was an inspiration to us every day. We watched ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ every day [on the set of “La La Land”] for inspiration and she’s truly an unparalleled talent.”

Decorated Vietnam veteran Sammy Lee Davis will have a front row seat on Donald Trump's Inauguration Day.

Davis, who lives outside a tiny Indiana community called Freedom, has been an honored witness to every president taking oath of office since Richard Nixon's first inauguration in 1969.

It doesn't matter whether he voted for the President-elect or not, David said, he goes to each ceremony out of a "sense of duty — an obligation I feel in my soul."

After Nixon's inauguration, the president sent Davis a personal note, thanking him for attending, and for his service.

Davis and other recipients are invited to each presidential inauguration through the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, which helps cover expenses for the trip.

Hillary Clinton Would Beat De Blasio for NYC Mayor: Poll

0
0

Hillary Clinton would crush New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio in a head-to-head matchup if she ran as an independent, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released on Wednesday.

Clinton would beat De Blasio 49 percent to 30 percent, with overwhelming support among Democrats and independents, the poll said. The mayor would beat the former Democratic candidate for president by 10 points among Republicans.

Earlier this month, speculation popped up that Clinton could consider challenging de Blasio this fall. While widespread media reports say she almost certainly will not run, the poll makes clear she would win virtually every age, gender, geographic and ethnic group by significant margins if she did.

"New Yorkers aren't in love with Mayor Bill de Blasio, but they seem to like him better than other possible choices - except Hillary Clinton, who probably is an impossible choice," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll, in a release.

De Blasio was Clinton's campaign manager during her successful 2000 Senate bid. But he initially delayed endorsing her, finally doing so six months after she announced her campaign.

Clinton's strength notwithstanding, in a series of hypothetical matchups De Blasio would easily win a Democratic primary for mayor against the most commonly discussed candidates, including former City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Comptroller Scott Stringer.

He would also win, albeit with smaller margins, against any of those same candidates running as independents.

The phone poll of 1,138 New York City voters was conducted Jan. 11-17 and has a margin of error of 2.9 percentage points.

Sneak Peak: Legoland's Plans for New Castle Hotel

Legoland California Resort has broken ground on a new castle themed hotel in Carlsbad.

The Legoland Castle Hotel, targeted to open in the spring of 2018, will be the first of its kind in North America.

“We have one in Germany, we’re building one in England, but there’s nothing like this is North America,” said Peter Ronchetti, General Manager of Legoland.

The Legoland Castle Hotel will have three different room themes: Princess, Wizard and Knight. There will be 250 total rooms, including 20 suites completely immersing guests into a castle experience.

For hotel guests, think role play and a hotel stay uniting.

“There will be dress up, activities, big jousting events every day. So coming to the hotel will feel like an event, something is about to happen, everyday there will be a big event,” said Ronchetti.

In planning for the hotel, Ronchetti said Legoland did a lot of research and the castle theme came through very strong among children and adults, “It’s an evergreen theme, everyone gets it.”

The Legoland Castle Hotel is expected to create hundreds of jobs and bring millions of dollars into the Carlsbad economy.

“Not only are there jobs coming to Carlsbad for this hotel, but that has a ripple effect into this community," Carlsbad Mayor Matt Hall said. "Not only are people coming here, they are coming to local restaurants, beaches and Carlsbad Village."

Legoland opened in Carlsbad in 1999. The first Legoland Hotel followed in 2013.  The Legoland Castle Hotel is just the latest in what park officials say is a growth pattern.

“Every single year for the next ten years we have a development planned.  So every year something new will arrive. That’s been our formula for last 15 or so years and it’s worked really well for us,” said Ronchetti.

Sale of Qualcomm Stadium Site Will Be Tricky

0
0

Now that the Chargers have bolted to Los Angeles, ideas on how to transform the current Qualcomm Stadium site are coming in.

The first step will be finding someone to buy the 166-acre slot of land, a transaction that will likely be a long, complicated process.

"Any sale of land would be a complex deal that would have to go through a number of different steps to come to some type of conclusion," said San Diego City Councilmember Chris Cate.

The City Charter has several provisions.

If the city is selling more than 80 acres of land, any deal will have to go to a public vote. Depending on the proposed development, the city could decide to lease a portion of the property.

"It's not gonna be one of those things where there's this silver bullet, oh this makes sense we make a vote tomorrow and it's done," said councilmember Scott Sherman.

There's another twist: the City Water Department also owns a chunk of the land.

The department would have to be compensated for the assessed value of it's land. But how should that land be assessed? It's not currently zoned for anything specific.

"I think part of, maybe, some folk's frustration, is that we don't have a step by step process today. Obviously it's very fluid week, since the Chargers decision," said Cate.

Some of the proposed plans for the land include a satellite campus for San Diego State University on the property, complete with a smaller stadium for Aztec football.

Coming up with ideas is the easy part, officials say, and bringing them to life will take patience.

"And it really depends on what ideas are put forth and what makes the most sense for the taxpayers, because at the end of the day, it's the taxpayers land," Sherman said.

There are so many potential variables to what could happen with the land that there's no way to say how any transaction will unfold.

However, Councilmember Sherman says to keep the ideas coming so that City can determine which plan is in the best interest of the city.

Turns out, there really are Chargers fans in Los Angeles.

Well, at least around 150 of them.

Fans gathered at the Forum in Inglewood to welcome the Bolts to LA. The “rally” was an RSVP event and included team owner Dean Spanos, new head coach Anthony Lynn, several players and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

“This is the start of an exciting new chapter in Chargers’ history,” Spanos told the crowd, eliciting cheers.

The mood of the event was upbeat, drawing cheers from the fans who attended, save for one fan who heckled Spanos and was ejected from the building.

At the rally’s end, blue and yellow confetti fell from the ceiling.

Here’s a sampling of NBC 7 reporter Artie Ojeda’s tweets from the event.

Trevor Hoffman Misses HOF by 5 Votes

San Diego Padres great Trevor Hoffman missed the cut Wednesday by just five votes.

Tim Raines, Jeff Bagwell and Ivan Rodriguez were elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Hoffman, in his second year of eligibility for the ballot, received 327 votes or 74 percent. The former Padres closer tied pitcher Bert Blyleven in 2010, missing election into the Hall of Fame by the sixth slimmest margin, according to MLB HOF officials.

Raines, fifth in career stolen bases, received 24.3 percent of the vote in his first ballot appearance in 2008. He jumped from 55 percent in 2015 to 69.8 percent last year and was on 88.8 percent of the vote-tracker's ballots this year, set to join Andre Dawson and Gary Carter as the only members of the Hall representing Montreal.

Raines spent 13 of 23 big league seasons with the Expos, who left Canada to become the Washington Nationals for the 2005 season.

Bagwell, on the ballot for the seventh time, had increased from 41.7 percent in 2011 to 71.6 percent last year, falling 15 votes short when Ken Griffey Jr. and Mike Piazza were elected. Bagwell was tracking at 88 percent this year.

"I just want to get it over with," Bagwell said. "This is the first year I've kind of been keeping track of it and just kind of looking. So I'm excited about it."

Rodriguez was a longtime catcher, notably for the Texas Rangers.

The Girl Scouts of the USA defended their participation in the inauguration ceremonies for President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday in the wake of some criticism.

"Trump does not mirror the Girl Scout values we try to instill in our scouts," Nancy Gannon, a Brooklyn-based Scout leader, told NBC News.

In an exclusive statement to NBC News, the Girl Scouts, which has been appearing at inaugural events throughout their history, said "Our movement is made up of individuals who hold political beliefs and convictions as varied as our nation itself. And because every girl has a home at Girl Scouts, every girl in our movement is allowed her own ideas, opinions, beliefs and political ideology."

The Boy Scouts of America, as well as several military and veterans' organizations, will also be participating.

Women Who Sit Longer, Age Faster: Study

0
0

Sitting for too long and not exercising enough can accelerate biological aging in elderly women, according to a recent study by the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).

The study, done by researchers from UCSD’s School of Medicine was published Wednesday in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Approximately 1,500 women, ages 64 to 95, participated.

Elderly women who exercise less than 40 minutes and sit for more than 10 hours per day have cells that are older by eight years compared to women who do moderate to vigorous physical exercise, according to the study.

“Our study found cells age faster with a sedentary lifestyle. Chronological age doesn’t always match biological age,” said Aladdin Shadyab, PhD, and lead author of the study with the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health at UCSD.

The study was part of the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), which is a national study focused on investigating what causes chronic diseases in women after menopause.

According to Shadyab, studies in the future will study how exercise may impact men and younger women.

#JuJuOnThatChemo Star Dies

A Texas woman with cancer who lifted spirits across the world when she danced to "JuJu On That Beat" with a friend through her chemotherapy died Wednesday.

A close friend of Ana-Alecia Ayala described her as "one in a million" when confirming her death to NBC4 Southern California. She said the last couple of weeks were particularly tough.

But the Dallas resident didn't let her diagnosis with a rare form of uterine sarcoma in December 2015 get her down, gaining a following thanks to her cancer awareness video, hashtagged "#JuJuOnThatChemo." She endured the highs and lows of the disease, sharing updates of her journey with the world via social media.

"There is life after diagnosis. Making the most of the good days and taking this diagnosis and running with it is what I've tried to accomplish," she said in a Novemeber appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."

Ayala leaves behind a husband and 3-year-old daughter.

Ayala’s Facebook page was flooded with condolences Wednesday, with many re-sharing her popular dance video. The video had over 9 million views on Facebook as of Wednesday afternoon.

Ayala’s internet fame exploded after the video was posted in October showing her and friend Danielle Andrus dancing to "JuJu on the Beat" with medical tubes attached to her body. Soon afterward, the pair were invited onto Ellen DeGeneres's show in Los Angeles to share her inspiring story. She even inspired her very own trending hashtag, #AnaStrong.

DeGeneres gave her a $20,000 donation from Shutterfly to help with medical expense.

"My faith in God and my trust in my doctors has gotten me this far," she said in a prior interview with NBC Dallas-Fort Worth.

2 Locals in D.C. for Inauguration, for Different Reasons

0
0

Many San Diegans are traveling to Washington D.C. this week to be part of the historic events surrounding President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration.

Among them are two locals who will both take part in rallies - albeit very different kinds of rallies.

Myke Shelby, who owns the San Diego Harley-Davidson, will be in D.C. in support of Trump.

He and thousands of other bikers are expected to form a so called "wall of meat" around the inauguration to drown out protesters. He has tickets to the inauguration, as well.

"I'm here because this is a moment in history, I want to be a part of it, even if I'm just a witness, I want to be here, I want to share it," he told NBC 7 San Diego.

As a businessman, he says he's excited about lower taxes and less regulations.

Meantime, local Isabela Rodriguez will travel to D.C. tomorrow for a much different reason.

The University of San Diego law student will be part of one of the weekend's largest crowds when she walks in the Women's March on Washington.

The march is predicted to draw upwards of 200,000 people.

Rodriguez says as an immigrant, environmentalist, and woman, she felt compelled to join the movement.

"It's really all focused on positive things, rather than negative things," she explained. "We're just trying to show we're here, we don't want to be ignored, today is your first day in office and this is something we care about and we're going to keep caring about for the next four years."
