A man suspected of vandalizing dozens of cars at an Oceanside dealership on Christmas Eve was arrested on Saturday, the Oceanside Police Department confirmed.

Devon Burg, 29, was booked into the Vista Detention Facility on vandalism charges.

Burg, a Vista resident, is suspected of vandalizing 31 brand new vehicles at the Mossy Infiniti Dealership on College Boulevard in Oceanside.

The estimated amount of damage to vehicles is over $175,000, police said.

Surveillance video showed the suspect walking up and down the rows of vehicles, damaging them. The vandalism occurred around 11:15 p.m. on Dec. 24, 2016.

Executive General Manager, Sean Hogan spoke with NBC 7 after the incident in December. He said almost all the metal in the cars needs to be replaced and repainted.

A woman who pleaded guilty to attempting to shoot a barber last year was sentenced to 9 years in state prison Monday, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office confirmed.

Police said Adrian Blanche Swain, 30, got a haircut at the 619 Barber Shop on 30th in North Park on Feb. 10, 2016.

According to barber Manny Montero, Swain left the shop happy with the haircut he had given her but returned an hour later with a different haircut. She yelled at Montero for messing up her hair and then attempted to shoot him three times but the gun malfunctioned.

Montero and other employees tackled Swain to the ground and held her there until police arrived.

Swain pleaded guilty in Oct. 2016 to assault with a semiautomatic firearm.

47 Dogs Impounded from Jamul Home

County Animal Services removed nearly four dozen dogs from a Jamul home after a series of complaints about the number of dogs on the property.

When animal control officials investigated complaints, they found 53 dogs at the home in east Jamul - including two litters of puppies.

Current County regulations only allow for six adult dogs on a property in an unincorporated area, unless the property is zoned otherwise or has a special permit. In this case, County regulations applied.

The dogs were healthy and cared for, animal control officers said, and the property owner cooperated and was grateful for the help. The owner said several of her dogs had puppies and she could not find homes for them.

“This was a case where the owner let the animal situation get away from her,” said County Animal Services Director Dawn Danielson in a statement. “She had dogs that weren’t spayed and neutered. Within a short time, they bred and the population ballooned to more than 50 dogs.”

When animal control officers met with the homeowner on Jan. 4, she relinquished ten dogs - all border collie blends aged five months to one year old.

When officers returned several days later, they took 12 more dogs, two litters of puppies and their mothers. One litter of five Chihuahua blend puppies was just two weeks old. A second litter of five Shih Tzu puppies was only four weeks old.

Saturday, the owner relinquished 25 more dogs: all adults that included border collies, border collie blends, toy and miniature poodles, and more. The homeowner kept six dogs.

All animals were taken to the County's facility in Bonita and checked by a veterinarian. Some were transfered to local rescue groups and some were made available for adoption. The San Diego Humane Society took in nine dogs.

Additionally, the homeowner had five goats, two horses and several pigs on her land. Animal Services put her in touch with a rescue group that may be able to take in some of those animals.

Some of the dogs are still available for adoption. Visit the County of San Diego's website to look for available animals.

City of San Diego Asking Residents to Report Potholes

With the heavy rainfall in San Diego recently comes the problem of potholes and there are plenty of them.

From Jan. 5 to Jan. 9, the City of San Diego received 465 reports of potholes, a significant increase from when the weather is dry.

According to the City’s street division website, a pothole is created, "when water seeps into cracks in the surface of the road. Then, combined with the vibration of the tires over the cracks, this causes the asphalt to fail. That is why there are more potholes after it rains."

“I try to ditch [potholes] if I can. If I can't, I grin and bear. It’s bad very bad,” said Frank Shipp, a resident of Mission Heights.

But the city of San Diego does not want people just to grin and bear it. They want people to report the potholes they see them.

According to its website, the city's street division repairs more than 30,000 potholes per year. The division has now adopted a more regional approach to fixing the potholes which means crews can focus their attention on neighborhoods.

Crews also visit each council district twice a month.

Cameron Holmes, a resident of Linda Vista, told NBC 7, he has never personally called the city to report a pothole. But he added that “people do it all the time, God Bless those people, because I don’t.”

You can report a pothole on the city’s website, or download its free app GETITDONE. You can also call (619)527-7500.

9 Goats Found Dead, 52 Others Rescued form Jamul Property

Animal control officers have rescued more than 50 goats from a property in Jamul after receiving reports of possible deceased goats on the site.

County Animal Services (CAS) officers arrived at the property on Monday to find nine dead goats and 52 others alive, some severely underweight.

CAS officers suspect the goats died from malnourishment, and will have more information at the conclusion of their investigation. The living goats were seized from the property and taken to a CAS facility in Bonita.

In addition to malnourishment, officers say some of the goats are suffering from upper respiratory infections and overgrown hooves. One goat found lying down at the site was unable to get up on its own and CAS officers say it may not survive.

Multiple goats are pregnant, and one gave birth during the trip from the property to the county care facility.

The goats’ health will be monitored by veterinary staff at the facility where they will receive medical attention and food in order to regain weight.

The owner of the property has not been charged, but CAS officers say they could face criminal charges.

San Diegans Prepare for Trip to D.C. to Witness Inauguration

San Diegans across the County are planning the make the trip to Washington, D.C. to witness history as President-elect Donald J. Trump is inaugurated.

“I think the energy is going to be amazing,” said Mayra Estrada.

Estrada works as a program specialist at UC San Diego. As a first generation Mexican-American, immigration is an important issue for her.

She first planned the trip to D.C. for inauguration in September with her sister.

Yet, when Clinton lost the presidential race in November, the two decided they should still go.

“It's important to be there to be the voice,” Estrada said. “It's important for us to just be present.”

A group of high school students at La Jolla Country Day School are preparing to make the trip as well.

“I'm so excited. I can't wait,” said senior Landon Nutt.

He and 77 others will go to inauguration and the inaugural ball. The students will meet with Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

For Nutt and his classmates, this is an opportunity to get broader sense of American politics.

“San Diego is a bubble," said senior Remy Reya. "La Jolla Country Day is a bubble and one of the greatest things about this opportunity is see the broader political spectrum."

Unlike Nutt, Reya does not identify as a Republican. Still, he’s using this trip as an opportunity to take in opposing views and build.

“We're all people. We're all Americans,” he said. “[We should] be able to see past those political lines that divide us and really understand each other for the people we are and not let ideology or political views tear us apart.”

Reya said he’s hopeful about the direction the country is headed in.

“I do have hope for the next four years, for the next eight years, for the rest of my life," he said.

SD Stadium Update: Working the Numbers

$

On Wednesday the NFL will hold a meeting between its finance committee and stadium committee to discuss possible relocation. The Raiders and their desire to move to Las Vegas will be discussed.

The Chargers and their option to move to Los Angeles, however, will not.

The Bolts will not be attending the meeting. They have until Sunday, January 15 to decide whether or not to take the Los Angeles option, stay in San Diego and work on a new stadium deal, or perhaps work out an extension on making a decision, perhaps the annual league meetings at the end of March.

Chargers Chairman Dean Spanos is still mulling the options and has just six more days to make the decision. His history suggests he will take as long as possible to make up his mind.

Meanwhile, Spanos and San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer have had a regular, consistent line of dialogue about working towards a new stadium solution in San Diego.

There have been rumors that the team has softened on its “No Mission Valley” stance and is amenable to returning to Mission Valley. If that is true the only major sticking point remaining in getting a new stadium deal done in the Chargers home market continues to be the financing component.

The numbers are in flux, mostly because nobody can seem to agree on just how much a stadium will cost. Estimates range from less than $1 billion to $1.5 billion for the Mission Valley site. If the amount of money they get from PSL (Personal Seat License) sales and naming rights is factored in the Chargers could probably come up with around $350-$375 million in cash.

Spanos has asked the NFL to kick in more than the $300 million they have already offered up and the league likes the San Diego market enough to consider doing that. There has been talk that Rams owner Stan Kroenke, who has pockets deep enough to write a big check to help finance a new San Diego stadium, might be willing to do that to keep the L.A. market all to himself.

Once the final price tag for the new facility can be agreed upon then we can start to truly look at how much is still needed and if it is more feasible for Spanos to try and stay in San Diego or take the L.A. option.

If Spanos is truly paralyzed by this decision he still might not ask for an extension but the league might offer him one anyway with the heavy implication that he take it, giving him more time to work out a solution in San Diego.

SDG&E Requests Rate Hike to Cover Past Wildfire Costs

San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) is asking for the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to allow them to charge customers more to cover costs of the 2007 wildfires.

SDG&E wants to charge $1.70 more every month for the next six years to recover $379 million in costs from the wildfires.

A public meeting was held in Escondido on Monday evening. Hundreds of people gathered at the conference center to share their thoughts on the proposed rate hike.

Some argued that customers should not have to pay for the damage caused by the wildfires adding that it should be the SDG&E's responsibility.

"They want to spit in our face and have us be charged for the bill that they paid, plus all the people not even involved in the fire," said Janice Shaffer.

Shaffer was among the group of people at the meeting who had lost their home in the fires.

"To me its unconscionable, and as a stockholder, SDG&E needs to pay," another fire victim told NBC 7. "The rate hike should not be given to those who are victimized."

CalFire determined that SDG&E lines caused the fires but the company argued that they were not at fault.

"We understand the impact of this fire and we are truly sorry," said Dave Gier, Vice President of Electric Transmission with SDG&E.

He added: "We believe the damage caused by those fires were out of our control."

According to SDG&E spokesman Hanan Eisenman, in the Witch Fire, wind caused two lines to touch and in the Guejito, it caused a cable bundle to break. During the Rice Fire, a broken tree branch blew off and hit power lines.

"The fires were caused by the unprecedented Santa Ana winds we had that day," Eisenman said.

He added that the winds were a common denominator for all the fires.

A CPUC hearing will be held on Jan. 23.

For anyone unable to attend Monday night's meeting, you can email your comments to the CPUC at public.advisor@cpuc.ca.gov or go to their website for more information.

Popular Escondido Restaurant Abruptly Closes, County Finds Rodents

The Centre City Cafe in Escondido has abruptly closed its doors because of rodents.

NBC 7 spoke with Frank and Jewell Loebus, who have been coming to the restaurant for years.

“We've been coming here at least once or twice a month," said Jewell Loebus.

They said they tried over the weekend and again on Monday night but the doors remained closed.

A food facility inspection dated from last Friday and Saturday shows vermin found in the restaurant on both days, leading to an immediate closure.

Another major violation listed was that foods were not being stored at the proper temperatures or in good condition.

The Loebus' said they have never seen issues like these dining at their favorite eatery.

“There for a while, the booths looked like they needed to be replaced for something like that but I've never seen anything dirty or anything like that," they said.

They added that as long as it gets the clear from the county, they will go back.

“We'll certainly give it a pause, but we've been coming here for years, never had a clue, never had anything questionable," said Jewell.

NBC 7 did reach out to the owners for comment on the closure and when the restaurant may reopen. As of Monday night, we had not received a response.

The two other locations in Mission Valley and La Mesa remain open.

The End for 'BackPage' Adult Services Ads

The controversial adult services section on a popular classified ad website has shut down after years of public and government pressure.

In September 2016,  NBC 7 told the story of one young single mother marketed and sold as a prostitute on the website.

If you log onto Backpage now, the word "censored" is prominently displayed at the top of the page, in red and all caps. There are also prompts that take to you the website's response to eliminating the adult services ads and for websites encouraging free speech.

In its press release, Backpage claims the government is unconstitutionally censoring the site.

San Diego Chief Deputy District Attorney Summer Stephan sent a statement to NBC 7 in response, which read, in part:

"Their claim of government censorship is bogus. Shutdown of their site will result in much fewer victims whose enslavement is hidden by the social media platform of Backpage."

Stephan calls Backpage, the largest internet brothel, responsible for the buying and selling of minors for sex.

The crackdown on the website comes shortly after the release of a U.S. Senate report that accused Backpage of editing some of the ads to help disguise content that indicated sex for sale.

Published reports indicate the Senate committee's inquiry found evidence that Backpage knowingly facilitated prostitution and child sex trafficking.

NBC 7 previously interviewed sex trafficking survivor Jaimee Johnson.

Johnson told NBC 7, for five years she was sold into prostitution and she amassed customers in several southern California cities by placing ads on Backpage.

Johnson is now an advocate, working to expose the horrors of sex trafficking for the last two and a half years.

“These people need to look at their daughters and look at their sisters and their wives and mothers and remember that these women are no different than that and they definitely shouldn't be used as sexual commodities or expendable products," Johnson said.

The shutdown also comes one day before Backpage's founders, Michael Lacey and James Larkin and the site's CEO, Carl Ferrer, were expected to testify before the Senate's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.

A little girl who is searching for her beloved stuff animal that was lost during Friday's Ft. Lauderdale airport mass shooting is getting some help from Broward Sheriff's Office.

BSO's Twitter page sent out a tweet Monday with a picture of the missing teddy bear named Rufus, asking the public to be on the lookout for the stuffed animal.

[[410201865, C]]

Deputies received a request from a page presumably created by the girl's family asking the police department to help them find the lost toy. The Twitter page @klariviere3 tweeted out "Looking for Rufus from Terminal 2 D8. Crying daughter cannot sleep. #FLLshooting help!"

Tens of thousands of items were left behind by panicked travelers Friday when accused lone gunman Esteban Santiago opened fire in the baggage claim area in Terminal 2. Apparently, Rufus, who's donning a red onesie, was one of those prized possessions that got lost during the deadly rampage.

Hopefully, the family's public plea will help get Rufus back to his sleepless owner.

San Diegans looking for a new getaway this summer are in luck!

Southwest Airlines has announced it will add nonstop service from San Diego to five new destinations in just a few months.

Starting June 4, locals will be able to fly to Boise, Idaho and Salt Lake City, Utah year-round from San Diego International Airport. The flights will be once a day

The airline will also add seasonal nonstop flights to three new destinations: Newark, Spokane and Indianapolis.

The new service to those three locations will be offered through the end of the airline's current summer schedule, which runs through Aug. 14. Details are available on the Southwest website.

At the moment, Alaska Airlines is the only airline flying nonstop to Boise. United Airlines and Alaska Airlines fly direct to Newark, a popular hub for New York City travelers. Delta Airlines and Alaska are the only two airlines that fly nonstop to Salt Lake City right now.

Zachary Mensen, of Southwest Airline's Business Performance & Planning department said the new service additions are part of the airline's ongoing mission to be the hometown carrier for San Diego travelers "to every place that San Diegans want to fly."

"That means offering more nonstop service than anyone else to the places San Diegans want to go. As the largest domestic carrier, and the biggest airline in the West, the list of nonstop destinations is already long. Our additions to the summer schedule help us to cross off more destinations on the wish list and put them onto Southwest.com as options for travelers," Mensen said.

Currently, Southwest Airlines says it carries more than 3,100 passengers daily, each way, traveling to and from San Diego International Airport within California. With the airline's summer schedule, Southwest will offer San Diego travelers nonstop service to 30 destinations.

Travelers looking to nab a sweet deal to these new cities from San Diego should hurry - the airline is offering a promotion with fares as low as $89 to Boise and fares as low as $59 to Salt Lake City, so long as travelers purchase them before midnight on Jan. 26. Travel under that deal will be valid June 4 through Aug. 14.

Legoland Starts Construction on Castle-Themed Hotel

Legoland California Resort has scheduled a Jan. 18 groundbreaking for its planned new castle-themed hotel, which will be the second on-site hotel at the Carlsbad park.

Park officials said the 250-room hotel, plans for which were announced in fall 2016, is slated to open in spring 2018. It will join a similar-sized Lego-brick-themed hotel that opened in 2013 at the Carlsbad venue.

Approved by the city of Carlsbad in October, the new three-story hotel will include an outdoor swimming pool and its own full-service restaurant and gift shop. It will have building and pavement elements emulating a castle’s towers, drawbridge and other elements.

The hotel is being built on a portion of a parking lot located west of the theme park’s existing hotel and main entrance, off Legoland Drive near Cannon Road. Legoland California Resort currently employs about 2,500 people, and the new hotel is expected to add approximately 250 jobs.

Legoland California’s operator, U.K.- based Merlin Entertainments, does not disclose project costs or other financial figures for its individual theme parks. The world’s second-largest theme park operator owns more than 100 attractions in 24 countries, including Legoland parks in Florida, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

For 2017, the Carlsbad park has also previously announced significant expansions of existing Legoland attractions, including its “Star Wars” Miniland and its on-site waterpark. It also plans new redesigned rooms at its existing hotel that will be themed around the popular Lego Ninjago block sets and TV show.

New Hiking Bridge Opens on Poway’s Old Coach Trail

A new bridge is now open on Old Coach Trail in Poway – providing even more access for hiking, biking and horseback riding at the popular scenic trail.

On Sunday, Poway City Councilmember Jim Cunningham posted a photo of himself showing off the new bridge. He said a ribbon cutting ceremony at the site will soon follow.

According to the San Dieguito River Valley Regional Open Space Park Joint Powers Authority, the City of Poway recently completed the installation of the new bridge on the Old Coach Trail. It sits over Sycamore Creek.

The San Dieguito River Park says the passageway replaces a bridge that washed out about six years ago during a winter storm.

"This new bridge establishes an official crucial connection between the San Dieguito River Park’s Coast to Crest Trail with the rest of Poway’s trail system and eventually the Trans-County Trail along Poway’s southern border,” the agency wrote in a blog post last month, which included photos of San Dieguito River Park staffers and rangers hiking through the Old Coach Trail and checking out the new bridge.

According to this hiking trail tip sheet from the City of Poway, Old Coach Trail runs from Justin’s Trail past the golf course, west to the northern city limits, before it ties into San Dieguito. The trail connects to the West Ridge Trail, and is described as a scenic, wooded route that ventures across creeks.

Old Coach Trail spans approximately four miles and is open to hikers, bicyclists and horseback riders. To access the trail, visitors can park at the Old Coach Staging Area on Highland Valley Road and then walk south toward the beginning of the trail.
