A woman missing since August has been found alive after allegedly being held captive on a property in Woodruff, South Carolina, officials said Thursday.

Spartanburg County Sheriff's deputies were searching the property Thursday morning in relation to a tip about a sex crime, when they heard a loud banging from a metal storage container, NBC News reported.

Sheriff Chuck Wright told NBC affiliate WYFF that deputies discovered Kala Brown, 30, "chained inside the container like a dog."

"It's all by God's grace that we found that little girl alive," Wright told the station.

Charlie Carver, Brown's boyfriend, who disappeared around the same time, remains missing.

San Diego Unified School District dedicated a brand new multisport field at Baker Elementary School Thursday.

The celebration of the school's new field consisted of students, parents and staff and SDUSD Board Vice President Richard Barrera.

The school's previous play area consisted of decomposed granite. Thanks to Proposition Z that was passed in 2012, the school district was able to fund the project.

The construction for the new multisport field began this past summer and represents an investment of nearly $600,000 into Baker Elementary students as well as the Mountain View Community.

Students took on their new turf field shortly after the ribbon was cut.

Catholic Church's Bulletin Links Clinton to Satan

Fliers inserted into a Catholic church's newsletter in San Diego implied that Hillary Clinton was satanic and warned that voting for Democrats would result in parishioners “descending into Hell.”

One leaflet, stuffed in a bulletin handed to churchgoers at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Old Town on Oct. 16, states: “How to vote like a Catholic – it is a mortal sin to vote Democrat!”

The handout goes on to outline several political issues, including abortion, and notes the church’s stance on the topic. “Based on the above, it is mortal sin to vote Democrat,” adding that sin, if not confessed, “means eternal damnation,” the leaflet cautioned.

Two weeks later, parishioners received a second bulletin titled “Voting Catholic,” that again discussed social issues and implored them to take a "Catholic view."

“The devil does this through the tactics outlined by Saul Alinsky with the outcome as Hillary Clinton has stated, ‘And deep-seated cultural codes, religious beliefs and structural biases have to be change,' to draw us away from God’s teachings regarding the sanctity of life to those of the world and its prince,” the leaflet said.

Alinsky was a Chicago-based community organizer and author who wrote the 1971 book "Rules for Radicals: A Practical Primer for Realistic Radicals." Conservatives like former GOP presidential nominee Dr. Ben Carson have labeled Alinsky a dangerous radical and a "diabolical" influence on both President Barack Obama and Clinton.

Clinton's quote was pulled from an April 2015 speech at the Women in the World Summit in which she addressed abortion.

Reached for comment on Thursday, Kevin Eckery, a spokesman for the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego, said he doesn't know how the first insert got into church bulletins.

He called the second bulletin “unusual,” noting the tone was different than how the church normally addresses parishioners.

Robert McElroy, the Roman Catholic bishop of San Diego, issued this statement:

"Let me stress again that while we have a moral role to play in explaining how Catholic teaching relates to certain public policy issues, we must not and will not endorse specific candidates, use parish media or bulletins to favor candidates or parties through veiled language about selectively chosen issues, or engage in partisan political activity of any kind."

Several people who attend the church told NBC 7 they felt the handouts were out of line.

“To refer to a candidate as a devil or ungodly is a disgrace and it’s a shame for our religion or our priests to indulge in that nonsense,” said Michael Alcaraz, who frequents Immaculate Conception.

"Clearly in my mind when a church spells out a presidential candidates name with any sort of opinions that’s a violation as far as I can tell,” said church visitor Daryl Johnson.

As a result of the incident, the diocese says it plans to send out a reminder to churches to refrain from making statements about specific candidates.

Harvard Cancels Men's Soccer Season Over 'Scouting Report'

Harvard University nixed the remainder of its men's soccer season Thursday after it was revealed that members ranked recruits on the women's team by their sexual appeal — and officials say the procedure was not limited to a single season.

Reported last month by the Harvard Crimson, a nine-page document circulated over email as a "scouting report" in 2012 gave freshmen women numerical scores and included photos pulled from social media sites. The women were also assigned hypothetical sexual positions and nicknames.

The lewd document appeared to be a tradition, as it referred to a report from 2011. And according to President Drew Faust, that tradition has continued.

"I was deeply distressed to learn that the appalling actions of the 2012 men's soccer team were not isolated to one year or the actions of a few individuals, but appear to have been more wide-spread across the team and have continued beyond 2012, including in the current season," Faust said in a statement Thursday. "Given this information, I fully support the clear and unequivocal decision made by the Director of Athletics today to cancel the remainder of the team's season, including post-season play."

"I was saddened and disappointed to learn that the extremely offensive 'scouting report' produced by the 2012 men's soccer team continued through the current season,'" Dean Rakesh Khurana added Thursday. "As I have stated, such behavior is antithetical to Harvard's fundamental values. It is clear that as individuals, as members of groups, and as a community, we need to do more to ensure that relationships on this campus are built on respect and dignity in all contexts. We cannot be a great college unless we are a good community."

School officials spoke out against the document in October when details were learned.

"Harvard University Athletics has zero tolerance for behavior of this kind and is deeply upset by these offensive and derogatory remarks," athletic director Robert L. Scalise said in a statement obtained by necn. "Harvard College students, including members of our athletic teams, are required to uphold the values of this community, which are rooted in the respect and dignity for all members of our community. University Athletics continues to reinforce with our student-athletes appropriate and respectful social behavior and team conduct."

After the report came to light, a member of the 2012 women's soccer team, who wanted to remain anonymous, called the scouting report "absolutely disgusting" in an email to necn. She said she was "deeply hurt, and beyond frustrated" that women are treated this way, not only at Harvard but at other school campuses and around the world.

She added that the Crimson article read like a "tabloid" report at her own expense, and that of the Harvard soccer teams and athletic programs.

Pieter Lehrer, the men's soccer coach, added that he was "shocked and disgusted" by the report. He was not the coach in 2012.

Several members of the 2012 men's soccer team declined comment when reached by the Crimson.

The school's women's soccer coach, Christopher P. Hamblin, said in a statement to the Crimson that he was "saddened to see this level of disrespect shown to these women." He referenced a "huge shift" in the culture of the men's soccer program" since Lehrer's hiring in 2013.

Rachael Dane, Spokesperson for Harvard University, released a statement Wednesday evening saying, "The offensive and derogatory remarks reported by the Crimson have no place at Harvard. This kind of behavior is completely at odds with the educational environment we seek to foster and with our central value of treating one another with dignity and respect — in our residences, in classrooms, on the athletic fields, and in our social experiences. Now that we have been made aware of this document and its contents, the University is working to assess the circumstances surrounding it.”

The family of Fallen San Diego Police (SDPD) Officer Jonathan "J.D." De Guzman and injured SDPD Officer Wade Irwin received a standing ovation during a ceremony honoring them.

De Guzman, 43, was killed in the line of duty on July 28 when he was shot multiple times point-blank during a traffic stop by a man now charged in his death. De Guzman's partner, Officer Irwin, was also shot point-blank during the attack, but survived.

A SDPD ceremony Thursday, held at MCAS Miramar's Bob Hope Theater, recognized the officers for their actions during a special recognition ceremony.

De Guzman's family accepted the Police Cross in honor of their loved one, an award given to officers who make the ultimate sacrifice.

"He is commended for his bravery and for his dedication to duty, which are in the finest tradition of the San Diego Police Department and the law enforcement profession," the speaker said as they handed out the award to his family.

Officer Irwin received the Medal of Valor and The Purple Heart for his actions that day as he stood with his family, including his young daughter.

The speaker described Irwin's heroic actions the night of the shooting.

"Officer Irwin was lying on the ground, bleeding profusely from the gunshot wound to his neck," he said. "Courageously, he pulled out his handgun and returned fire, successfully striking the suspect."

San Diego Police Department officials gave the families and recipients a standing ovation at the emotional ceremony.

During the ceremony, officials also recognized promotions and awardees within the department.

USA Gymnastics Opens 'Independent Review' on Sex Abuse

USA Gymnastics, the national governing body for the sport, has hired an attorney to lead an "independent review" of its handling of sexual abuse cases amid allegations it turned a blind eye to misconduct, NBC News reported.

The organization, which selects gymnasts for the Olympics and World Championships teams, has been named in two lawsuits filed by ex-athletes who allege they were molested by former team doctor Larry Nassar.

In addition, an investigation by the Indianapolis Star newspaper in August reported that top USA Gymnastics executives repeatedly failed to tell authorities about sexual abuse accusations against coaches. At the time, USA Gymnastics called the newspaper report "one-sided and anchored in a mischaracterization" of its approach to sexual misconduct, saying it "takes action" when it suspects abuse.

USA Gymnastics has also defended its handling of the Nassar matter, saying it fired him and reported "athlete concerns" to the FBI in 2015.

Since then, at least two dozen complaints of sexual abuse have been lodged against Nassar, who denies wrongdoing and has not been charged with a crime.

Three Men Charged in Alleged Hate Crime Against Somali Man

Three local men have been charged with a hate crime for allegedly beating a Somali man because of his race and religion at a pizza restaurant in Redwood Village, according to the San Diego District Attorney's office.

Sean Arevalo, Terrance Crow, and Scott Peretti allegedly beat a 20-year old Somali Muslim man with brass knuckles and a chair inside the lobby of Zappy Pizza on University Avenue. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon around 3:42 p.m., according to the San Diego Police Department (SDPD).

Police say an argument sparked after Arevalo, Crow and Peretti allegedly made degrading comments to the victim regarding his race and religion. The suspects then hit the man in the face with brass knuckles and slammed a chair onto his head.

A woman, who wished not to be identified by name, says she is the girlfriend of one of the suspects. She said that this wasn't a hate crime, but just a scuffle between the men--comparing it to a high school fight.

“Violence is not the answer but in this case, it is self-defense," she told NBC 7. "But what are you going to do if someone is hitting you?"

“Guys, guys. Just people talking crap. Somebody took offense to it and now there is a fight. That's all that happened," she added.

The three men were arrested at a home on Hughes Street, near the pizza restaurant after they were identified by witnesses. The victim suffered minor injuries, police said.

On Wednesday, NBC 7 learned the young man who was beaten is the son of a Somali community leader in City Heights. His father's office is just a mile from Zappy Pizza on University Avenue.

NBC 7 reached out to the victim's family, but we did not get a response to an interview request.

There are four security cameras inside Zappy Pizza but the attack was not recorded.

All three suspects are due in court on Nov. 7.

It took the Chicago Cubs more than a century to win the World Series.

It took Kris Bryant just two seasons to stake his part in baseball history after reaching the major leagues.

The former University of San Diego Torero helped record the final out of Game 7 of the 2016 World Series as the Cubs held off the Cleveland Indians 8-7 in ten innings to win their first title in 108 years.

Moments after fielding the last out on a ground ball hit by Mike Martinez, Bryant reflected on the magnitude of the moment.

“I knew he was fast,” said Bryant. “I knew I had to get rid of it. It was wet out here, that’s one of the best games anyone will ever see.”

“I've never won an award as a team. I've always been able to do it individually but this trumps everything. I mean I'm out here crying. I’m so happy. I really can't put into words how this feels. "

Young Minority Residents Call Thousands to Get Out and Vote

Dozens of volunteers from minority communities across the city spent hours calling registered voters in San Diego Thursday, hoping to get them to get out and vote in the historic election.

“Would I be able to inform you about Measure K on your local ballot?” asked one volunteer, working with Alliance San Diego.

The local non-partisan group, based in North Park, said they are pushing to inform voters about what is at stake during this election.

"The upcoming election is not just about who's going to be president in Washington D.C.,” said one volunteer. “It’s also about who our local leaders should be, and the decisions we should make on local issues that affect our neighborhoods."

The organization's mission is to explain to voters how important it is to get out and vote this coming Tuesday on Election Day.

Their goal is to reach about 30,000 people in the city that still might have questions about some of the local measures.

Jesus Mendez, an undocumented resident, works with Alliance SD. Mendez just graduated from San Diego State University (SDSU) this past May. He is able to legally be in the country and work because of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. It grants him a two year residency where he can work and go to school in the states.

He explained why he chose to volunteer.

"It's difficult to build relationships, it's difficult to reach out to one another, across our differences, it's easy to stay comfortable,” said Mendez.

"It’s easy for people to say, 'Oh you know, I'm not undocumented so that's not really my issue, I'm not black, that's not really my issue, I’m not X I'm not Y,'" he said.

Mendez explained that the message the group wants to get out to viewers is that the election is not just about electing the next president.

Many of the local measures and state propositions would drastically affect communities of color, he said.

Admitted Killer Claims Self Defense in Fatal Stabbing

A man who admitted to stabbing a father-of-two to death in Encanto said there were at least two months of threats and hostile texts leading up to the fatal stabbing last month.

Miguel Ramos, 20, told NBC 7 San Diego he has nothing to hide, and he wants to set the record straight and tell his side of the story. Ramos said the fatal stabbing was in self defense.

"It's not the, I'm not able to do something like that, but when somebody comes and invades your home with your family in there, and kids, I mean, what man wouldn't do anything to protect their family," he said.

The killing happened early on Sunday, Oct. 9, when Ramos fatally stabbed 44-year-old Robert Acevedo in front of his girlfriend, Sarah. The victim was a Lemon Grove resident and father-of-two.

Sarah was married to Acevedo and had an 8-year-old son with him. She began dating Ramos while the two were separated.

Ramos claimed the victim had been taunting him for months leading up to the incident and sent him threatening texts. In those texts, Acevedo said he would hurt Ramos and his wife.

Ramos' attorney said Acevedo sent threatening texts to Sarah the night of the incident.

One of them reads, "Tonight is not going to be good for him. Everybody has a routine, I watch, I learn, I know."

The night of the stabbing, Ramos said, Acevedo and at least one other man had gone to his home with the intent to harm him. NBC 7 contacted the family of Robert Acevedo and they declined to comment or talk to NBC 7 for the story.

According to Ramos, Acevedo came to his home and tried to fight him. Fearing for his life, Ramos ran inside, grabbed a fishing knife, and fatally stabbed him in the front yard.

"When I left I couldn't even drive because I was still shooken up about the situation. I was driving around and I sat in the car and I just was thinking to myself," Ramos said. "I'm in disbelief. It's so surreal. I didn't know what to do. I was scared."

Ramos says he still feels like his life is being threatened by people who knew Acevedo, and he wants it to stop.

The 20-year-old suspect turned himself in to authorities the following day, San Diego Police said. However, the DA declined to file criminal charges against him. They agreed it was a case of self defense.

Ramos said he is still haunted by the killing and what happened that night.

"It just seems so surreal, I've never experienced something like that in my life, so just the fact that it happened. After it happened I was stuck, I didn't move from where I was, I was shaking, I was...I'm not ever able to do something like that," he said.

The death is under investigation. Anyone with information related to this incident is encouraged to call the San Diego Police Department’s Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.

According to Ramos, Acevedo came to his home, tried to fight him.. and fearing for his life, Ramos ran inside, grabbed a fishing knife, and fatally stabbed him in the front yard.

Family of Alfred Oalngo Files Additional Claims Against ECPD

The family of Alfred Olango, along with its attorneys and representatives from the National Action Network (NAN), held a press conference Thursday to announce the filing of two claims against the El Cajon Police Department (ECPD) and Officer Richard Gonzalves following the shooting death of Olango by ECPD in September.

One claim will be filed on behalf of Olango’s wife, Tania Rozer, and his two daughters. Olango’s father, Richard Olango Abuku, plans to file a separate claim in the near future.

If the city of El Cajon does not respond ot the claims within 45 days, the family will then have six months to file a lawsuit against the city.

Olango’s sister, Lucy Olango, filed a claim with the city of El Cajon in late October alleging that officer Gonsalves, the officer who fatally shot Olango in the parking lot of an El Cajon strip mall “provoked Alfred into taking foreseeable defensive measures which Officer Gonsalves then used as false justification to kill him.”

“This lawsuit, it’s not just going to be the Olango Family lawsuit,” Dan Gilleon, the attorney for Lucy Olango said. “Because we’re suing a public entity, all of the documents, the deposition, they’re going to be public record. These are going to be the public’s records and you are going to have a right to see those documents, those depositions.”

Attorney Brian Dunn of the Cochran Law Firm and John Sweeny of the Sweeny Firm will represent the wife and children of Olango.

“I speak for the entire family in saying that we are here for one reason, and we are here for one reason only,” Dunn said. “We don’t want another family to go through this. We’re here because we don’t want another wife to lose her husband, we don’t want another child to lose her father, and we don’t want another father to lose his son.”

Attorney Rodney Diggs of Ivie McNeill & Wyatt will represent Richard Olango Abuka, Olango’s father.

“The death of Alfred Olango is a turning point in America,” Richard Olango said. “It’s a turning point in the justice system in America, and it will be a turning point in how policing is done in America.”

Reverend Shane Harris, President of the NAN San Diego demanded an independent investigation of Olango’s killing, and said that the NAN and more than 100 other organizations will sign a letter calling for the investigation to be taken over by Attorney General Loretta Lynch.

San Diego voters looking to avoid possible long lines on Election Day can head to the polls this weekend to cast their ballot.

The San Diego Registrar of Voters office will be open Saturday and Sunday for residents who would like to vote early.

[[399397521,C]]

“Long lines may be an issue on Election Day as voters fill out the longer, two-card ballot,” said San Diego County Registrar of Voters Michael Vu in a statement. “Weekend voting gives voters yet another option to cast their ballots or drop off their mail ballots before Election Day.”

This is the first year San Diegans will fill out a two-card ballot, because of the large number of contests on the Nov. 8 election. On the ballot this year, there are over 180 decisions to make when voting.

[[399579831,C]]

County officials are urging residents to plan ahead, do research and mark up a sample ballot before coming in to vote.

The office is located at 5600 Overland Avenue, San Diego, 92123 on the County Operations Center campus.

On both Saturday and Sunday, the office will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Homeowner Caught in the Middle Over Repairs

A La Jolla woman says repairs to her home are at a standstill after her homeowner’s insurance and HOA couldn’t agree on who should pay the bill.

“Where you see that pipe coming up, it leaked down into the garage and into the walls,” Susan Krause said.

A leaky pipe behind Susan’s refrigerator led to extensive damage inside and outsider her La Jolla condominium.

“The whole ceiling, all beneath the refrigerator had to be cut out because of the moisture,” Susan said.

The estimate for repairs was over $11,000. Workers tore out drywall along with stone tiles and moved her fridge but after that, repairs came to a halt.

Susan said she expected her homeowners insurance from USAA to pay for the damage inside her kitchen and her HOA’s insurance to fix the ceiling in her garage. But she said USAA told her it was her HOA that should pay for it all.

Susan said her HOA told her that her USAA private insurance is responsible for damage inside her unit as well as the damage in the garage, since it originated from inside her unit.  Susan said USAA wouldn’t budge.

“I don’t want to have to take out a loan to pay for what I’ve already paid for,” Susan said.

Susan said she pays her insurance premiums  on-time and doesn’t know what she could have done differently. So she turned to NBC 7 Responds for help.

“I want my house fixed, at the end of the day I just want my house fixed,” Susan said.

After NBC 7 Responds contacted USAA officials, asking them to re-evaluate Susan’s claim, USAA contacted Susan the next to apologize and begin the repairs. Within a week, work crews were sent to her home to start fixing the problem.

“They have been nothing but accommodating at this point,” Susan said when we returned to her home one week later.

USAA agreed to cover the costs and fix both Susan’s kitchen and her garage ceiling. In an email, a spokesperson for USAA told us, "We worked closely with our members through every step of the claims process, and have resolved this matter to the satisfaction of both USAA and our member."

The 9-year-old son of a Marine, wearing his helmet, survived after a car struck him outside of Murrieta school Wednesday, and now his father is hoping surveillance will track down the hit-and-run driver.

William Berglund, 9, was lucky to escape with minor injuries.

"The car was coming and then it hit me and I fell back," he said, describing the hit. "It was scary. I was in so much pain."

William was riding his bike to Lisa J. Mails Elementary School Wednesday morning.

Surveillance footage captured William at the corner of Briggs and Baxter roads when a silver sedan turns right onto Baxter, striking him as he rides into the crosswalk. The car takes off, leaving him unconscious in the roadway.

Soon after, William's father Charles, an active duty Camp Pendleton Marine first sergeant, got a call no parent ever wants to get.

"I freaked out and started getting really worried and nervous," Charles said.

He was at Camp Pendleton in San Diego County when he got the call. He was relieved that his son only had some scratches and bruises.

But the relief quickly turned to anger when Charles heard the driver didn't stop.

"I just wanted to find out what could have possibly been going through your mind that you would want to leave anybody, much less a kid, after you struck them," Charles said.

William will have to get a new bike, but he and his father are just grateful he wasn't seriously hurt or killed.

They're hoping the hit-and-run driver will do the right thing.

"Please turn yourself in," Charles said. "Come back. Let us know you take responsibility for your actions."

California Highway Patrol investigators believe the driver is woman and the car is a silver Toyota or Acura.

Anyone with information on the hit-and-run or driver is encouraged to call CHP at 1-800-835-5247.

White House Readies to Fight Election Day Cyber Chaos

The U.S. government believes hackers from Russia or elsewhere may try to undermine next week's presidential election and is mounting an unprecedented effort to counter their meddling, American officials told NBC News.

The effort is being coordinated by the White House and the Department of Homeland Security, but reaches across the government to include the CIA, the National Security Agency and other elements of the Defense Department, current and former officials say.

Russia has been warned that any effort to manipulate the actual voting or vote counting would be viewed as a serious breach, intelligence officials say.

"The Russians are in an offensive mode and [the U.S. is] working on strategies to respond to that, and at the highest levels," said Michael McFaul, the U.S. ambassador to Russia from 2012 to 2014.

Officials are alert for any attempts to create Election Day chaos, and say steps are being taken to prepare for worst-case scenarios, including a cyber-attack that shuts down part of the power grid or the internet.

A man was arrested and booked into jail after investigators discovered he was allegedly manufacturing marijuana when they searched his apartment following a fire.

Jesse Estes, 33, was arrested on Thursday and booked into Vista Detention Facility. According to the Carlsbad Police Department, he had been manufacturing marijuana for sale inside his apartment.

Officers initially responded to reports of an explosion around 9 p.m. Wednesday on the 2200 block of Avenida Magnifica in Carlsbad. Upon arriving on scene, they discovered that there had been a kitchen fire inside an apartment which had been extinguished by a resident.

Police say Estes had attempted to escape from the apartment but he was taken into custody by officers outside of the building.

Estes suffered burn injuries and was transported to the UCSD Hospital for treatment.

Investigators said Estes had been attempting to extract hash oil from marijuana when he caused the explosion and fire. The process requires use of butane, a flammable substance.

A resident inside the home was able to put out the flames using a fire extinguisher.

Estes was taken into custody Thursday morning, after being released from the hospital.

Hundreds gathered on Thursday at the University of Wisconsin-Stout to pay their last respects to classmate Hussain Saeed Alnahdi, NBC News reported.

The 24-year-old Saudi student was assaulted and left bloodied outside a pizzeria on a crowded street Sunday morning. He later died from the assault. Authorities are not dismissing the possibility that the attack was a hate crime. It is likely that many also witnessed the beating on Sunday, though there is only one viable witness.

More than 20 of Alnahdi’s closes friends shared their memories of him Thursday while holding candles. He was described as a man who “bridged the gap between the Saudi and local community.”
